Armed Police Batrider uses arcade-style configuration rather than a single universal rule set. Pressing A, B, C, or Start when choosing a character selects a different ship type; continues may be enabled or limited by the board’s DIP switches; and several modes and team arrangements are unlocked with title-screen inputs after inserting a coin. The commands below follow the documented Shmups Wiki and Vizzed references, but board revisions and emulator settings can change what works.

How continues work in Armed Police Batrider

Continue play is an arcade setting, not a fixed entitlement shared by every copy of the game. The available gameplay references indicate that the machine’s DIP-switch configuration can enable or disable continues and determine how the game behaves after a credit is exhausted. They do not establish one dependable default number of continues for every cabinet, region, software revision, or emulator.

Arcade cabinets

On original hardware, check the machine’s service menu or physical DIP-switch chart. The chart may be mounted inside the cabinet door, on the board documentation, or in the operator information for that revision. Look for settings labeled Continue, Continue Play, or a similar option. Because the references do not provide a revision-by-revision table, do not assume that another cabinet’s setting is the same as yours.

Emulators

In an emulator, open the machine-specific configuration rather than the game’s ordinary in-game options. Depending on the emulator, this may appear under a service menu, machine settings, DIP switches, or a configuration tab exposed before launching the game. Set continue play according to the option available for your emulated board, then restart the machine if the emulator says the setting is latched at boot.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • If the continue prompt never appears, confirm that the emulated DIP switch allows continues and that you inserted enough credits.
  • If the game offers a continue but the count differs from a guide, compare the emulated board or software revision before changing other settings.
  • If a setting appears to have no effect, save it at the machine level, reset the emulated hardware, and test from a new credit.

A manual mirror surfaced in the available references also describes continue play as switch-controlled, but it is a third-party copy rather than a verified primary manual. It is useful as a lead to the type of setting to look for, not as proof of a universal default.

Choosing a ship type

The button you press while selecting a character determines that character’s ship type. It does not select a different character by itself. The four documented choices trade main-shot power, option power, and movement speed in distinct ways.

Ship type Selection input Main shot Option Speed Best understood as
Type A Press A Favored Less emphasized Standard Main-weapon choice
Type B Press B Less emphasized Favored Standard Option-focused choice
Type C Press C, or press A+B together Strong Strong Slower Maximum weapon presence at a speed cost
Type D Press Start Weaker Weaker Faster Speed-focused choice

The Vizzed strategy guide uses simpler labels for the same broad tradeoffs: A is normal power, B is bomber power, C is option power, and Start is speed-up. The Type A–D terminology above follows the more detailed Shmups Wiki description; the simpler labels are useful when an emulator or guide presents the choices by button rather than by type letter.

Type A: main-shot emphasis

Press A at character selection for Type A. This configuration favors the primary weapon over the option. It is the straightforward choice when you want the ship’s own shot to do most of the work and do not want the slower handling of Type C.

Type B: option emphasis

Press B for Type B. The balance shifts toward the option system rather than the main shot. Players who rely on positioning or firing patterns from the options may prefer this tradeoff, while the ship’s direct shot is less dominant than Type A’s.

Type C: strong weapons, lower speed

Press C, or press A and B together, to select Type C. Both the main shot and option are described as strong, but the ship moves more slowly. That combination can reward deliberate routing and controlled positioning, while making sudden corrections more demanding.

Type D: speed emphasis

Press Start for Type D. Movement is faster, but both the main shot and option are weaker. The extra speed can help with rapid lane changes and evasive play; the cost is that enemies may take longer to destroy than with the weapon-focused types.

Team size and the single-ship choice

The documented game description allows a team of up to three characters. A single-ship team is listed separately as an unlockable option, so it should not be treated as one of the four ordinary button-based ship types. First unlock the team option, then select it through the mode or team-selection screen presented by your board or emulator.

Unlockable characters, teams, and modes

The specialist reference documents commands entered at the title screen after a coin has been inserted. Enter the directional sequence in order, then press the listed buttons and Start. These are guide-documented inputs, not a guarantee for every board revision.

Title-screen input after crediting Result
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start Unlocks guest characters
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start Unlocks the single-ship team
Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start Unlocks Boss Rush
Press A+B together while highlighting a mode Unlocks Stage Edit

Guest characters

Insert a coin, remain at the title screen, and enter the first sequence exactly as shown. The reference describes the result as guest-character access. It does not specify a universal visual confirmation, so look for the additional selections on the character or team screen after the code is accepted.

Single-ship team

The second sequence differs only in the order of the final two face buttons: B then A rather than A then B. That distinction matters. Entering the guest-character sequence will not be a substitute for the single-ship code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boss Rush and special stage versions

The third sequence unlocks Boss Rush. After it is available, highlight Boss Mode and tap Left or Right to choose a special stage version, according to the specialist guide. The extra Left/Right action is performed on the mode-selection screen; it is not part of the original unlock sequence.

Stage Edit

Stage Edit uses a context-sensitive command rather than a long directional code. Highlight the relevant mode and press A+B simultaneously. If the emulator maps A and B to separate keyboard keys, press them at the same time rather than one after the other. The source describes this as an unlock input but does not enumerate every editing function available afterward.

DIP-switch alternatives

The same reference notes that DIP switches can enable the documented features in an emulator setup. If a title-screen code is ignored, inspect the machine’s DIP configuration before assuming the sequence is wrong. A board may expose a feature through a switch instead of accepting the software-style input, or a revision may implement the command differently.

Score extends and secret life recovery

The regular score extend occurs every 1.5 million points, according to both the Shmups Wiki reference and the Vizzed guide. Treat that figure as the documented threshold for the referenced game configuration, not as a promise that every regional or revised board uses a different hidden schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large blue hovercraft condition

On the Highway stage, destroy the large blue hovercraft after it stops in the tunnel. This is a separate secret extend condition rather than a score milestone. The timing matters: destroying it before it reaches the described position is not the condition documented by the guide.

Missing three large or maximum bomb items

Missing three large or maximum bomb items triggers another listed extend condition. The wording describes deliberately failing to collect the items, not collecting three of them. Keep the distinction in mind when diagnosing why an extend did or did not appear.

Missing three extend items

Missing three extend items produces a special extend. The special result restores empty life slots without the rank gain associated with a regular extend. Vizzed also describes missing three extends and collecting the next one as the route to this special recovery, so the exact visual sequence may depend on the board’s presentation. It should not be counted as another 1.5-million-point threshold.

Exact procedure for entering a code

  1. Start the machine or emulator and wait for the title screen.
  2. Insert a credit. The documented commands are specified for the title screen after inserting a coin.
  3. Use the game’s directional controls to enter the arrows in the selected sequence without adding an extra direction.
  4. Press the final A or B button, then press Start when the sequence calls for it. For Type C selection or Stage Edit, A+B means a simultaneous press.
  5. Open the character, team, or mode screen and verify that the new option is present.
  6. If nothing changes, reset the machine and repeat the sequence after checking DIP-switch settings, control mapping, and board or software revision.

Do not enter the unlock sequence from the pause screen, attract-mode demonstration, or an in-game menu unless your particular board explicitly presents the title screen there. The documented location is the title screen after crediting.

Troubleshooting when a code or continue does not work

The sequence is rejected immediately

  • Confirm that the game has a credit. The commands are not documented as free-play inputs.
  • Check that directional inputs are mapped to the emulated eight-way controls and are not being interpreted as a menu cursor with a different repeat rate.
  • Enter A+B simultaneously where specified; two separate presses may select another action.

The code appears accepted but the option is missing

  • Return to the correct character, team, or mode screen; each code affects a different menu.
  • Power-cycle or reset the emulated machine if the configuration applies only at boot.
  • Check whether a DIP switch is enabling or disabling the feature independently of the code.

Another player reports a different result

Compare the actual arcade board or software revision first, then compare DIP-switch or emulator settings. The cited references document the commands and tradeoffs but do not map every behavior to every revision, so conflicting results do not by themselves prove that either player entered the input incorrectly.

Which setup should you choose?

Your priority Ship choice Tradeoff to expect
Strong direct firing Type A (A) Less option emphasis than Type B or C
Option-based attack patterns Type B (B) Less main-shot emphasis
Both weapon systems at high strength Type C (C or A+B) Slower movement
Fast movement and quick repositioning Type D (Start) Weaker main shot and option

For a first attempt, choose according to the problem that is ending your runs: Type A if enemies survive too long, Type C if you can manage slower movement and want both systems strong, or Type D if dodging and repositioning are the limiting skills. Type B is the natural experiment when your strategy already revolves around option placement. These are control and weapon tradeoffs, not separate character identities.

What is confirmed, and what is configuration-dependent?

  • Documented: A, B, C/A+B, and Start select Types A, B, C, and D respectively, with the tradeoffs shown above.
  • Documented: Guest characters, a single-ship team, Boss Rush, and Stage Edit have the listed unlock inputs.
  • Documented: A regular extend is described at every 1.5 million points, with three additional conditions listed by the specialist guide.
  • Configuration-dependent: Continue availability and count depend on arcade or emulator settings; no universal default was established.
  • Revision-dependent: The references do not verify that every unlock code behaves identically on every board revision.

These distinctions explain why a guide can be accurate while a particular cabinet still behaves differently. Treat the input tables as documented starting points, then verify the machine configuration before changing your controls or concluding that a feature is absent.

Sources and scope

The ship types, unlock commands, item conditions, and continue-setting cautions are based on the Shmups Wiki entry for Armed Police Batrider and the Vizzed strategy guide for the Europe/MAME context. IGDB’s Batrider — Press Kit is useful for the broad arcade identity and team description. These are gameplay references rather than a single authoritative operator manual, so board revisions and emulator configuration remain material qualifications.
