Arma Reforger’s “version mismatch” error means your game client and the server do not agree on the build, branch, or required Workshop content. The usual fixes are to put both sides on the same stable or experimental branch, finish every required mod download, and update or repair files. On PC, also verify the game files and clear stale mod data; on Xbox, check the console’s reserved mod space. If only one server fails after your game is current, the server owner probably needs to update the dedicated server or its mods.
What the version-mismatch message means
A connection is accepted only when the client can use the same game build and compatible add-ons as the server. A mismatch therefore does not automatically mean that your installation is broken. It can be caused by:

- A required Workshop mod that is missing, only partly downloaded, outdated, or incompatible with the current game release.
- Damaged or stale files in the PC installation or mod cache.
- A server that has not yet been updated after a game patch or that still references an old mod version.
Bohemia Interactive describes the same two principal causes: “You may be running a different game version (e.g. servers on the experimental development branch), or servers may require the use of certain (user-generated) add-ons and mods.”
Does the red text show your version or the server’s version?
The warning is a compatibility result, not a reliable display of one side’s version number. It tells you that the versions or content presented by the client and server do not match; the message may not identify which side is newer. Treat it as a comparison failure. Check your branch and updates first, then assume the remote server may be stale if every other server works.

Fast diagnosis before changing anything
- Try two or three other servers. If they work, your base game is probably usable and the failed server likely has an outdated build or mod list.
- Note when the problem started. A failure immediately after a patch often reflects a temporary server or mod transition.
- Check whether the server uses Workshop content. A mod download that is still queued, paused, or repeatedly failing can produce the same symptom as a game-build mismatch.
- Confirm your platform and branch. PC and Xbox have different storage and repair controls, and stable and experimental servers are not interchangeable.

Fixes for players on PC
1. Match the server’s branch
Make sure the game is running the normal branch expected by the server. Do not use an experimental-development client to join a stable server, or a stable client to join an experimental server. If you deliberately opted into an experimental branch, return to the branch used by the server you want to play, then allow the launcher to complete its update before starting the game.
2. Install the complete game update
Close the game and let the platform finish all pending downloads. A partially applied update can leave the executable, data files, and server-facing build number out of sync. Start the game only after the update queue reports completion. If the patch was released very recently, some servers may still be running the previous build; selecting a server that has already updated is the quickest test.
3. Verify the installation files
On PC, use the platform’s file-verification command for Arma Reforger. Verification replaces missing or damaged base-game files without requiring you to guess which file is wrong. Run it after the update has finished, not while another update is active. Restart the game when verification completes.

4. Clear stale mod data when files appear damaged
If the base game is current but modded servers still fail, clear the Arma Reforger mod cache using the PC controls provided for the game, then relaunch. Clearing cached data removes local copies that may no longer match the Workshop item; it also means required mods will need to download again. Do this before repeatedly reinstalling the entire game.
5. Let every required Workshop mod finish
When you select a modded server, remain in the game’s Workshop/download flow until every required item is complete. A server can reject a client that has the right base build but is missing one dependency. Avoid launching into a match while downloads are still queued.
6. Update, then replace a stuck mod
For a mod that remains at an old version or will not complete:

- Open the Workshop menu.
- Manually update the affected mod. Bohemia Interactive’s known-issues guidance says: “If this happens, first try to manually update the mod(s) in the ‘Workshop’ menu.”
- Restart the game if the update does not take effect.
- If it is still stuck, delete the older local mod version and download the correct current version again.
- Retry the server only after the replacement download finishes.
Disable mods you added recently while testing. If an unmodded or lightly modded server works after that change, re-enable additions one at a time to identify the conflict.
Fixes for players on Xbox
Check the reserved mod allocation
Xbox has a fixed amount of storage reserved for Arma Reforger mods. When that allocation is full, required content may fail to download or update even though the console has free space elsewhere. Remove unused Workshop content until there is room, restart the game, and allow the server’s required mods to download again.
Use the same branch and a clean restart
Confirm that the console is fully updated, then quit and relaunch the game rather than resuming a suspended session. A clean start lets the game re-check its mod inventory. If only one server remains unavailable, storage is less likely to be the cause than a server-side build or mod problem.

When a major update breaks a previously working server
Major releases can invalidate older Workshop content. In its 1.0 modding announcement, Bohemia Interactive said mods not published with the latest Arma Reforger Tools would be hidden and marked incompatible with 1.0. It also stated that outdated mods could no longer be used to host servers after the transition.

That creates a distinct post-update case: your client can be correctly updated while a server’s mission or dependency remains on an older toolchain. The practical choices are to join a server whose mods have been republished for the current release, wait for the maintainer to update the affected content, or report the exact server and mod name to its owner. Reinstalling your local game cannot convert an incompatible remote mod.

Update the dedicated server build and branch
The dedicated server must run the same game build and branch that clients are expected to use. Apply the current server update and keep automatic updates enabled when the hosting control panel offers that option. A client on the correct build will still be rejected if the server process is old.

Validate files once when corruption is suspected
If the host reports damaged or missing files, run file validation for one startup. A hosting guide recommends enabling validation for that repair, starting the server once, and then clearing the validation flag so every subsequent restart does not repeat the check. Schedule this work during maintenance because validation can delay the server’s return to service.

Review the server configuration item by item:
- Confirm each Workshop ID is correct.
- Check that the configured version is the current Workshop version.
- Remove entries for mods that were hidden, marked incompatible, or replaced after a major release.
- Restart the server after the corrected list has downloaded completely.
One stale dependency is enough to disconnect players even when the dedicated server’s base game matches their client.
Check compatibility after toolchain changes
After a major release, verify that each mod was republished with the current Arma Reforger Tools. The 1.0 transition explicitly hid or marked older publications incompatible, so simply keeping the old Workshop ID in the configuration is not a safe update strategy.

Crossplay, filters, ping and region: problems that look like a mismatch
Not every server-connection complaint is a version error. Crossplay settings, search filters, ping limits, and region selection affect which servers appear in the browser. A server hidden by a filter may be mistaken for one that is unavailable. Reset filters, confirm crossplay settings are appropriate for your platform, and broaden the region or ping range while diagnosing. These checks change server visibility; they do not repair an actual build or mod incompatibility.
Decision tree for a persistent error
- Can you join any server? If no, update the game, confirm the branch, verify PC files or check Xbox mod storage, then restart.
- Can you join unmodded servers but not one modded server? Finish that server’s Workshop downloads, manually update the named mod, and replace it if necessary.
- Do several modded servers fail after a patch? Clear the PC mod cache or free Xbox mod allocation space, then allow clean downloads.
- Does only one server fail while others work? Give the owner the server name, your platform, branch, and the exact error timing. The owner should update the dedicated server and audit mod IDs and versions.
- Did the failure begin with a major release? Look for a republished version of each dependency. If none exists, the server must wait for its maintainer or move to compatible content.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling the entire game before checking the branch or Workshop queue.
- Assuming the red message proves that your client is the outdated side.
- Deleting one mod and immediately retrying while another required dependency is still downloading.
- Using an experimental branch because it is newer, without checking what branch the target server runs.
- Expecting a player-side repair to fix a remote server’s obsolete dedicated build or mod configuration.
- Ignoring Xbox’s reserved mod allocation because the console still shows free general storage.
What information to send a server owner
A concise report helps the owner distinguish a server problem from a local one. Include your platform (PC or Xbox), stable or experimental branch, the server name, whether other servers work, the time of the last successful connection, and the name of any mod shown as missing or incompatible. Do not claim that your local reinstall fixed the issue unless you actually retested after the complete download.

Start with branch and update parity, then repair local files and Workshop content. PC players should verify files and clear stale mod data; Xbox players should make room in the fixed mod allocation. If the error is limited to one server, or began when a major release made old mods incompatible, the server owner—not your installation—must update the dedicated build and its mod set.
