Arma Reforger server settings are normally stored in one JSON file and loaded at startup with the -config parameter. The file controls network binding, the public listing, server name and passwords, scenario, player slots, view distance, voice and anti-cheat options, persistence, and selected performance limits.
There is an important qualification: no single authoritative Bohemia Interactive schema reference is currently available for all of these keys. Community guides disagree about key names, nesting, defaults, ports and even the expected filename. Treat the example and values below as a version-aware starting point, then compare them with the config generated by your server build.
What config.json does
The Enfusion server reads a JSON configuration at launch. A typical startup command points to it with -config; if the path is wrong, the server may fail to start or run without the settings you intended. The same file is not a universal contract across every Arma Reforger release. Guides aimed at builds before and after version 0.9.12 show different network keys, and some guides use different casing for operating settings.
Use the generated file from your own executable as the schema authority. Add one change at a time, keep a backup, and inspect the log after every restart. JSON is strict: property names are case-sensitive, strings need double quotation marks, commas cannot be left after the final property, and comments are not valid JSON.

Illustrative arma reforger config.json example
The following is an illustrative community-style layout, not an official template. It combines keys commonly shown in current guides so you can see how the sections relate. Your build may omit, rename or nest some of them.

Find the right file and load it with -config
Confirm the filename
One community reference calls the file config.json; another calls it server.json. The filename is not safe to assume from a tutorial. Check the server package, startup script, or a file created when the server first runs. If the startup command names server.json, changing only the contents of config.json will have no effect.
Use an explicit path
Point -config at the exact file used by the process. A generic Windows-style command is:
ArmaReforgerServer.exe -config "server/config.json" -profile "server/profile" -logStats -maxFPS 60-profile selects the profile and log location in sample launch lines, while -logStats enables statistics logging. Adjust executable and directory names for your host. The important part is that the path after -config resolves to the file you edited.

Understand parameters that override the file
Community launch guides report that -bindIP and -bindPort override the corresponding config values. A command-line override therefore wins over a correct JSON property and can make troubleshooting confusing. Another reported option, -server, launches a specified world and bypasses -config; do not use it when you expect the JSON scenario and settings to control startup. Some setup guides list -adminPassword as a launch option, but avoid placing a real administrator password in shared scripts or command histories.
Network settings: bindAddress, bindPort and public addressing
Network properties decide which local interface listens, which external endpoint players use, and how the backend advertises the server. A syntactically valid file can still produce an unreachable server if the address, port forwarding or firewall does not match.

Self-hosted network sequence
- Choose a free UDP listening port and record it as
bindPort. - Leave
bindAddressempty unless you deliberately need one interface. - Set
publicAddressonly if auto-detection is wrong. - Set
publicPortto the port players reach on the internet. - Create the matching router/NAT rule to the server’s private IP.
- Allow the same UDP traffic through the host firewall, then restart and check the log for the bound endpoint.
Managed hosting
Managed hosts commonly preconfigure bindAddress and bindPort. Do not change those fields unless the provider instructs you to; the assigned port may be tied to its proxy, firewall and control panel. Ask support for the externally visible port before editing public settings.
Query and RCON listeners
Steam-style a2s query
Community references describe an a2s (Steam query) listener on UDP port 17777. Server-listing sites use it to poll status. If you enable or change this listener, allow the selected UDP port through the firewall and ensure it does not collide with the game port.
BattlEye RCON
RCON is the least settled part of the published examples. One guide gives UDP port 19999, another uses 2312, and a Docker-oriented document describes RCON as TCP. Because both transport and port conflict, copy the syntax from the documentation for your exact server build or host image rather than combining examples. Keep RCON disabled unless you need remote administration, use a unique long password, restrict its source addresses where possible, and never expose an unverified RCON port broadly to the internet.

The game block
The game object contains the settings players see in the server browser and the rules used when a session starts.

Choosing a player limit
Start below the reported 128-player ceiling if the machine or mission is untested. A higher slot count increases connection, AI and replication work; it does not guarantee that the host can maintain a stable simulation. Raise the value only after observing CPU, memory, network and log behavior during a populated session.
gameProperties: view distance, grass, perspective and validation
Guides place detailed session rules inside game.gameProperties. The exact accepted set can vary by build, so retain only properties present in your generated configuration or confirmed by your host.

View and grass distances trade visual range for server and client workload. Change one distance at a time, restart, and test the busiest mission you intend to host. Do not assume a value copied from a different release has the same performance or spelling.
The operating block
Operating settings govern persistence, AI and reservation behavior. One guide places operating at the root; another layout may nest it differently. Follow the structure emitted by your server.

If changing aiLimit has no effect, inspect the generated schema for casing before changing the value itself. Unknown properties may be ignored without an obvious error.
Version and schema differences
Pre- and post-0.9.12 network names
Community guides warn that gameHostBindAddress and gameHostRegisterAddress belong to a pre-0.9.12 schema. Newer examples generally use bindAddress and publicAddress. Do not carry the older names into a newer generated file unless the server log confirms they are accepted.
Flat versus nested layouts
One reference shows a flat gameHostBindPort, while others use a root-level bindPort. Likewise, operating appears at root level in one guide. These are not interchangeable spelling variations; they represent different schema layouts. When migrating, copy the structure of the new file and transfer values property by property.

JSON keys are case-sensitive. The reported AILimit/aiLimit conflict is a warning that a visually similar property can be ignored. Preserve the exact case used by the generated configuration.
Step-by-step self-hosted setup
- Install the server build and start it once, if supported, so it can create its profile and baseline configuration.
- Stop the process and locate the generated JSON. Confirm whether the executable expects
config.jsonorserver.json. - Make a backup copy before editing.
- Set
name,scenarioId,maxPlayers, visibility and player password in thegameobject. - Set administrator credentials without spaces, and use a value longer than three characters to satisfy both commonly reported checks.
- Choose network values, then configure router forwarding and host-firewall rules for the same game and query ports.
- Leave optional RCON disabled until you have confirmed the transport, port and syntax for your build.
- Adjust one performance or operating property at a time.
- Launch with an explicit
-configpath and capture the log. - Join from a client on the same LAN first, then test from an external network. A successful LAN test does not prove that NAT or public registration works.
Validation checklist before opening the server
- The startup command points to the file you edited.
- The file parses as strict JSON and contains no comments or trailing commas.
- The scenario resource exists on the server and uses the expected GUID/path format.
bindPort,publicPort, router forwarding and firewall rules agree.- The server is bound to the intended interface and the log shows the expected address.
- The selected region matches the primary player base.
maxPlayersis within the range reported for your build and within your host’s limit.- Administrator and player passwords are not exposed in public scripts, screenshots or command history.
- Any command-line
-bindIP,-bindPortor-serveroption is intentional and not silently overriding the file. - Optional keys such as RCON, VON or
fastValidationare present in the generated schema before use.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts with default settings
Check the path after -config, filename, working directory and file permissions. Then look for command-line overrides. A -server launch can bypass the configuration entirely, and a misspelled or incorrectly cased key may be ignored.

The server is visible but nobody can join
Compare the advertised publicAddress/publicPort with the router’s external mapping. Confirm UDP forwarding and firewall rules, and make sure the process is listening on the intended bindAddress. A wrong auto-detected public address is a common reason to set publicAddress explicitly.
The server is not listed
Check visible, the query listener and the a2s firewall rule. If the host uses a nonstandard query port, verify that the listing service is polling that port. Public listing may also fail when a managed provider controls registration fields.

Players report lag or simulation slowdowns
Reduce maxPlayers, view-distance values or AI load in separate tests. A lower aiLimit can help weaker hardware. Keep statistics logging enabled while testing so you can correlate changes with server behavior instead of changing several limits at once.
RCON does not connect
Do not assume the port or transport from another tutorial. Confirm whether your build expects UDP or TCP, verify the configured port is not used by the game or query listener, check firewall exposure and rotate the password after testing.
A setting is rejected after an update
Restore the newly generated file, then migrate only the values you still need. Pay particular attention to the post-0.9.12 address names, flat versus nested port properties and aiLimit casing.
What to change first
- Set the scenario, server name, visibility and player access password.
- Confirm the administrator password and keep it private.
- Match bind/public ports with the host firewall and NAT configuration.
- Set a conservative player count appropriate to the hardware.
- Leave optional view, AI, voice and RCON settings at generated defaults until the basic join test succeeds.
- Introduce performance changes individually and retain a known-good backup.
For a hosted server, the provider’s assigned address and ports take precedence over generic examples. For a self-hosted server, reachability depends on the complete chain of JSON values, process arguments, firewall rules and router forwarding. In both cases, the generated configuration and startup log are more trustworthy than a copied guide aimed at another release.
