Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma Reforger servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Arma Reforger server administration is configured in config.json. Use game.passwordAdmin for a shared in-game password, game.admins for specific Identity IDs or Steam IDs, and the rcon object for remote console access. Stop the server before editing, keep the JSON valid, then restart it and test with the least privilege that meets your needs.
How Arma Reforger admin access works
There are three relevant access paths:
- Shared password: The value of
game.passwordAdminis entered in-game with#login <password>. Anyone who knows that password can request admin access. - Per-player allow-list: The
game.adminsarray contains Identity IDs and/or Steam IDs. A listed player can use#loginwithout supplying the shared password. - RCON: The
rconobject defines the remote-console address, port, password and permission level.
The server owner represented by ownerToken.bin can also use commands without a password. Treat that token as an administrative credential and do not copy it to untrusted machines.

Host control panels place the file in different profile or configuration directories, while a self-hosted installation may use the server profile directory you selected at startup. Use the panel’s file manager or the server’s documented profile path to locate the file; do not create a second file with the same name in an arbitrary directory.
- Stop the Arma Reforger server and wait until the process has exited.
- Download or copy the current
config.jsonand record the date in the backup name. - Edit the existing file rather than replacing unrelated settings with a short example.
- Validate the result as strict JSON. Property names and string values require double quotation marks; items in arrays are separated by commas; comments and trailing commas are not valid JSON.
- Upload or save the file, start the server, and inspect the startup log for a configuration or parsing error.
Keep the original indentation if other administrators maintain the file. A syntactically valid file can still fail to provide access if an ID is mistyped, a key is placed outside its parent object, or a host panel overwrites the file during a restart.

Set a shared admin password
Place passwordAdmin inside the game object. The password cannot contain spaces. In-game, an administrator enters it in chat or the command interface as #login your-password. The value is not the same as the server’s player join password unless you deliberately make it so; use a separate secret.

Use the current field name rather than adding both names. A password with spaces will not work, so use a long combination of letters, numbers and punctuation without whitespace.

- Join the server with the account that should receive administration rights.
- Enter
#login <password>, replacing the placeholder with the exactpasswordAdminvalue. - Run a harmless command such as
#playersto confirm that the login was accepted. - When finished, enter
#logout. Log out before handing the account to another player or leaving a shared workstation.
If the login fails, check capitalization, hyphens and spaces first. Then verify that the edited file is the one loaded by the running instance and that the server was restarted after the change.

Add named administrators with game.admins
game.admins is an array of quoted strings. Each entry may be an Arma Identity ID or a Steam ID. The feature was added in version 0.9.9.31 and is limited to 20 unique IDs. A listed player can use #login without a password.

}Replace the example strings with the exact identifiers shown by your server tools or player records. Do not enter display names, add angle brackets, or leave the values unquoted. A community forum report described an otherwise failing entry that began working after quotation marks were added; use that as a syntax warning, not as a substitute for verifying the identifier itself.
Adding an ID without breaking existing settings
- Stop the server and back up
config.json. - Locate the existing
gameobject. If anadminsarray already exists, append the new quoted ID after the last existing value and add a comma between entries. - If there is no
adminskey, add it insidegame; do not place it besidegameat the top level. - Count unique entries. Do not exceed 20, and remove an old ID before adding a new one when the limit has been reached.
- Save, validate the JSON, restart the server and have the listed account enter
#login.
An allow-listed ID bypasses the shared-password prompt, but it does not make the account immune to bans, kicks or other server rules. Remove departed staff promptly by deleting the corresponding array value and restarting.

Configure RCON
RCON is the remote administration interface. Its settings belong in a top-level rcon object, separate from game.

Use admin when the connection must run state-changing commands. Use monitor for observation and commands that do not change server state. A third-party guide describes a different administrator/moderator split, so do not assume that terminology maps to the current server. The wiki’s admin/monitor definitions are the safer reference, and command availability should be tested on the build you actually run.
RCON security checklist
- Choose a unique RCON password of more than the three-character minimum and without spaces.
- Do not publish the password in a Discord channel, startup script shared with players, or screenshot.
- Restrict access at your host or firewall to the management network or trusted administrators where possible.
- Give routine observers
monitorinstead ofadmin. - Change the password when a staff member leaves or a credential may have been exposed.
- Record the selected port in your private operations notes. If 19999 is already used, follow the current host template rather than guessing a replacement.
Apply changes and verify access
Admin and RCON edits normally require a server restart because the process reads config.json during startup. Use this sequence to avoid testing an old configuration:

- Announce the maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the last known-good configuration.
- Make one logical change at a time: password, ID list or RCON settings.
- Validate the JSON and save it in the location used by the active instance.
- Start the server and wait for the normal scenario startup instead of connecting during partial initialization.
- Test a password login, an ID-based login or an RCON connection from an authorized account, depending on the change.
- Keep the startup log and the prior backup until the test succeeds.
If the server does not start, restore the backup first. That distinguishes a JSON syntax problem from a game-version or hosting-panel problem and gets players online sooner.
Arma Reforger admin command reference
The following names come from a third-party guide written for the 1.7-era game. No official current command reference or 2026 patch notes were available to confirm every command, argument or permission rule. Treat the names as a starting checklist and verify them on your server before documenting them for staff.

The same guide reports that RCON ban-list pages show 25 entries per page, while the in-game view shows 10. Because that paging difference is not confirmed for the current build, use the output returned by your RCON client or game version as authoritative.

Whitelist changes
Whitelist configuration is also performed through the server configuration, but the available material does not establish one universal key name or value format for every hosting template. Do not invent a field from a guide for another version. Instead, use the whitelist section supplied by your current server template or host documentation and preserve its exact spelling and nesting.
- Stop the server.
- Back up
config.json. - Add the player’s exact identifier to the existing whitelist entry, using the format required by the active template and quoting string values.
- Validate the JSON and save the file.
- Restart the server and test with an account that is on the list and one that is not.
A whitelist edit that is made while the process is running may be overwritten or ignored. If the server rejects the file, restore the backup and check the host’s current schema before trying again.
Troubleshoot common failures
#login says the password is wrong
- Confirm that the value is under
game.passwordAdmin, not the obsoleteadminPasswordname or a different object. - Remove accidental spaces from the configured value and from the command.
- Check capitalization and punctuation.
- Restart the server after saving and verify that the active instance reads the edited file.
An allow-listed administrator still needs a password
- Check that the ID is an exact Identity ID or Steam ID, not a nickname.
- Ensure the value is a quoted string inside
game.admins. - Check for a missing comma or a duplicate that caused the array to be edited incorrectly.
- Confirm that the total number of unique IDs does not exceed 20.
The server fails to start after editing
- Look for a missing comma, unmatched brace, smart quotation mark or trailing comma.
- Compare the edited file with the backup and undo the last change if necessary.
- Make sure the panel did not regenerate
config.jsonfrom a separate template.
RCON cannot connect
- Verify the address, port and password as a set; changing only the client port will not work.
- Check that the password has at least three characters and no spaces.
- Confirm that the RCON object is at the top level and that the server was restarted.
- Check host or firewall access rules for the selected port.
- If you used port 19999 because of an older guide, compare it with the current host template; that port is not guaranteed for every 2026 deployment.
A command is rejected after successful login
Authentication and authorization are separate. An RCON connection using monitor is intentionally limited to non-state-changing operations, while an in-game account may not be recognized as an administrator if its ID or password path failed. Recheck the permission value and test the command on a maintenance server before using it during a live session.
Keep the setup maintainable
- Maintain one private change log containing the date, operator, reason and backup filename for each access change.
- Review
game.adminswhenever staff changes and remove unused IDs. - Use a separate shared admin password and RCON password so one disclosure does not expose every control path.
- Limit full RCON administration to people who need state-changing commands.
- After a game update, retest login, player listing, kick, ban, restart and shutdown. Field names, command syntax, paging and the 20-ID limit are all details that can change between builds.
As of the information available for this guide, the reliable configuration model is game.passwordAdmin for a shared password, game.admins for up to 20 quoted IDs, and a top-level rcon block using the admin or monitor permission names. The command list and the commonly quoted RCON port remain version-sensitive, so confirm them after each substantial server update.
