To join an Arma Reforger roleplay server, open Multiplayer > Server Browser, find a community whose rules and mod list suit you, then let the game acquire any required Workshop content. To host, choose a PC player-hosted session for a small group or run a dedicated server for a persistent public community. Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can join servers, but player-hosting itself is PC-only.
What an Arma Reforger roleplay server is
An Arma Reforger roleplay (RP) server is a multiplayer session organized around a community’s rules, scenario, and style of play rather than simply joining a random public match. Some communities expect realistic radio procedure and chain of command; others run civilian-life stories, law-enforcement scenarios, faction campaigns, or structured events. The server’s name, description, scenario, administrator team, and Workshop collection determine what you will actually experience.

Roleplay is created by the community through its rules, moderation, mission design, and optional mods. A server can therefore be technically available to everyone while still requiring an application, whitelist approval, age rule, orientation, or community-account verification. Those access policies belong to the individual community, not to Arma Reforger as a platform.
Choose the right hosting model first
Arma Reforger supports two server modes: player-hosted and dedicated. The choice determines who can start the server, how long it stays online, how much configuration you can control, and whether your home connection carries the networking burden.

Player-hosted (listen) server
A player-hosted server is started from the game client. The host’s PC runs the session and the host plays in it at the same time. It is the quickest option for a private evening with friends, a short test of a roleplay scenario, or a small group that does not need a continuously available world. Official documentation states that player-hosting is available only on PC.
The session normally ends when the host leaves or stops the server. The host also supplies the internet connection, local firewall rules, and router configuration. For players on the same home network this may be simple; for friends connecting over the internet, port forwarding is normally required.
Dedicated server
A dedicated server runs the server application without a local player using that same game instance. It processes game information and network synchronization independently, so the server can remain online while administrators are away and can host scheduled events or a persistent community. Bohemia Interactive supports running the dedicated process on local hardware or through a third-party hosting provider.
Dedicated hosting requires installation, configuration, update management, and network or provider administration. In return, it avoids tying availability to one player’s gaming session and gives a public community a stable place to publish rules, schedules, moderation contacts, and a consistent mod set.
Player-hosted versus dedicated: practical comparison

How to join an Arma Reforger roleplay server
The in-game Server Browser is the normal route to community servers. Use the following sequence so you do not arrive at a serious RP community without the required mods or access approval.
1. Open the Server Browser
- Launch Arma Reforger.
- Open Multiplayer, then select Server Browser.
- Wait for the list to populate before judging a server as unavailable; filters or a slow refresh can hide otherwise reachable sessions.
2. Narrow the list with filters
Use the filters exposed by your current game version to reduce the list by region, player count, scenario, language, and vanilla or modded preference. A nearby region can reduce latency, while a player-count filter helps you avoid joining a nearly empty session or a full server that will reject the connection. If you want to learn the base game first, filter for vanilla sessions; if you are specifically seeking RP mechanics, leave modded servers visible and inspect their requirements.
Filters are discovery tools, not guarantees of quality. A server marked with a roleplay term may have little active moderation, while a server with a neutral name may run a well-organized RP community. Treat the listing as an invitation to investigate rather than as proof that the server follows a particular standard.

3. Read the listing and follow its access process
Select a server and read its name, description, scenario information, and any community instructions shown in the listing. Look for the current rules page and the stated contact method. Communities may require any combination of the following:
- An application or interview before you can play.
- Whitelist approval tied to an in-game name or community account.
- Verification in a community chat server.
- A short orientation, training session, or rules quiz.
- A required faction, character, or radio procedure for the next event.
These requirements are not universal Bohemia Interactive requirements. They are local policies, and they can change with a new administrator team, scenario, wipe, or event. Check the community’s current page immediately before your first session rather than relying on an old post or a cached description.
4. Join and acquire required Workshop content
Select the server and choose to join. If the server requires mods, Arma Reforger can direct you to acquire and activate the required Workshop content as part of the joining process. Allow the download and installation to finish; disconnecting during acquisition can leave an incomplete or mismatched mod set.

A server may use a small collection or a large set that changes vehicles, weapons, uniforms, maps, medical systems, communications, or roleplay tools. Read the displayed mod names and sizes when possible, and leave enough storage space for updates. A modded server can become temporarily unavailable after an update if its scenario or one of its dependencies has not yet been updated.
5. Read rules before acting in character
Before speaking or moving as your character, read the community’s rules and event briefing. Pay particular attention to:
- Whether voice communication is mandatory and which channel is used for in-character speech.
- How to identify commanders, medics, civilians, police, or opposing factions.
- Rules for spawning, equipment, vehicles, prisoners, medical treatment, and captured objectives.
- When out-of-character communication is allowed.
- Procedures for reporting a bug, harassment, suspected cheating, or a rule dispute.
- Restart schedules, planned maintenance, and whether progress is wiped between events.
Do not assume that a realistic-looking server permits unrestricted simulation. Some communities prohibit looting, random attacks, combat logging, stream sniping, or impersonating staff even when the scenario itself is permissive.
6. Prepare for your first session
Join a few minutes early, confirm that your microphone and push-to-talk key work, and ask an administrator where new players should report. Start with the least disruptive role offered by the community. Following instructions, staying with your unit, and asking an out-of-character question at the correct time is more valuable than immediately choosing a leadership position.

If the server rejects you after the mods finish downloading, note the exact error, the server name, and whether the failure occurs before or after the loading screen. That information distinguishes a missing mod, an access-control decision, a version mismatch, and a network problem.
Mods, Workshop content, and vanilla play
Mods are optional across Arma Reforger as a whole, but they are mandatory for a particular server when that server’s scenario depends on them. The official Workshop handles uploading and obtaining this content, including acquisition triggered by joining a server that requires mods.
Bohemia’s mod-use guidance also supports filtering for vanilla sessions. Use that path when you want the unmodified game, are troubleshooting a mod conflict, or need to learn core controls before adding roleplay systems.
What a well-run RP mod policy should tell players
A community listing should identify the exact mod collection or the individual required mods, explain whether clients download them automatically, and state how updates are announced. It should also say whether optional cosmetic mods are allowed, how long a normal update takes, and what players should do if a mod update causes a mismatch. If the listing merely says “mods required” without naming them, expect avoidable connection problems and ask for the current collection before planning an event.
Common mod-related failures
- Missing content: return to the server listing and let the game acquire every required Workshop item.
- Version mismatch: restart the game after an update and check whether the server or a dependency is still on an older version.
- Stalled download: leave the join flow, verify your connection and available storage, then try again rather than repeatedly joining a live event.
- Scenario fails to load: report the exact mod or scenario name to staff; do not delete a whole collection unless the community instructs you to do so.
How to host a small private roleplay session on PC
Use a player-hosted server when one PC owner can be present for the whole session and the group is small enough that a home connection and hardware are appropriate. The host’s PC must run the game and the server together, and player-hosting is not available from Xbox or PlayStation 5.
Prerequisites
- A PC running Arma Reforger with the same scenario and Workshop content your players will use.
- A stable internet connection and permission to change the home router’s port-forwarding settings.
- A local firewall rule that permits the game and server traffic when prompted.
- A written server name, password policy, and short set of rules for the session.
Start the session in the game client
- Open Multiplayer and switch to the Host tab.
- Select Host new server.
- Choose the scenario and its source.
- Enable the Workshop mods required by the roleplay scenario. Confirm that the selected collection matches what your friends will download.
- Set a password if the session should remain private. A password prevents casual joins but does not replace your community’s whitelist or moderation process.
- Start the server and verify that it appears in the browser before sending the connection details to friends.
Forward the public port for internet players
For friends outside your home network, configure the router to forward the server’s traffic to the PC running the host. Bohemia’s private-hosting guide identifies public port 2001 as the default and explains that the range should be forwarded on the public and local sides. Router interfaces use different labels, but the process is generally:
- Give the host PC a stable local address, either through a DHCP reservation or an equivalent router setting.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Create a rule for the required Arma Reforger port, using public port 2001 and forwarding it to the host PC’s local address and corresponding local port.
- Save the rule, restart the router only if its interface requires it, and ensure the host PC’s firewall allows the game.
- Start the server again and test from a friend on a different internet connection. A test from inside the same home network may not prove that public forwarding works.
Do not publish your home public IP address in a public forum. Give it only to people who need it, or use the server browser’s listing and a private community channel to coordinate access.

Keep registration and anti-cheat settings intact
Arma Reforger hosting documentation warns that missing or modified registration values can prevent external connections or interfere with BattlEye operation. If a configuration file or hosting screen includes required registration or anti-cheat values, leave them at their documented settings. Do not copy a configuration from an unrelated server or remove a value simply because the purpose is not obvious.

How to host a persistent public roleplay server
A public community normally needs a dedicated server. Choose it when players should be able to connect without waiting for one person to launch the game, when events follow a published schedule, or when rules, administrator access, and a stable mod collection need to persist between sessions.
1. Decide between local hardware and a provider
Local hosting gives you physical control and avoids a recurring provider bill, but you must supply suitable hardware, bandwidth, power, cooling, firewall rules, backups, and uptime monitoring. A third-party provider can simplify datacenter networking and power management, but its locations, support quality, backup options, mod-installation tools, and pricing vary. Verify those details on the provider’s current service page before paying; they are not fixed properties of Arma Reforger.
Choose a location close to most players rather than assuming that geographic distance is irrelevant. A community spread across regions may need to balance latency, time zones, and event attendance instead of optimizing for one country alone.

2. Install the stable dedicated-server application
Install the stable dedicated-server application on the chosen machine and keep its game branch aligned with the clients your community uses. A branch mismatch can prevent players from joining even when the server is reachable. Apply game updates during a maintenance window, not immediately before a scheduled event, and record the previous working version so you know what changed when a failure appears.
3. Create a clear server configuration
Configure the scenario, administrator settings, password policy, and Workshop mod list before opening the server publicly. The configuration documentation covers join passwords, administrator passwords, and administrator login through the in-game command interface. Use separate, strong credentials for player access and administrator access; never publish an administrator password in the normal server description.
Document the final configuration in a private administrator record. Include the scenario name, mod collection, restart schedule, expected player count, administrator roster, backup location, and the date of the last successful test. This record makes it possible for a second administrator to recover the service when the primary host is unavailable.

4. Test privately before announcing launch
- Start the dedicated process with the intended scenario and complete mod list.
- Connect from a PC and, if your community supports them, test the supported console clients as well.
- Verify joining, spawning, voice communication, administrator login, password rejection, and a clean shutdown.
- Run a short roleplay scenario with the expected number of moderators and players.
- Check logs and resource usage while players join, change roles, use vehicles, and trigger the scenario’s major systems.
- Correct configuration, firewall, or mod problems before publishing the server as open to the public.
5. Publish rules and operating information
Use a name that identifies the community and its scenario without promising features the server does not provide. Publish the rules, application or whitelist process, required Workshop collection, restart schedule, maintenance policy, administrator contact, and procedure for reporting misconduct. State whether the server is always-on, event-based, or expected to disappear during maintenance.

Restart times, wipe dates, staff rosters, and mod versions change more often than the server’s basic identity. A dated announcement channel prevents players from following an obsolete schedule.
6. Operate the community continuously
- Updates: stage game and mod updates, then test the complete collection before applying them to the live server.
- Compatibility: remove or replace a broken dependency only after confirming what the scenario needs; changing the order or contents of a mod collection can invalidate a live event.
- Moderation: publish who can warn, mute, kick, or ban and how players can appeal a decision.
- Logs: retain enough server and administrator information to investigate disconnects, abuse reports, and unexpected restarts.
- Backups: back up configuration and community documents before major updates or wipes; do not assume a provider’s backup service is enabled by default.
- Monitoring: watch uptime, player capacity, disk space, bandwidth, and restart failures rather than waiting for players to report an outage.
Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC cross-platform access
Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can join official and community servers. They cannot start a player-hosted server from the console because player-hosting is PC-only. A PC must provide the player-hosted session, or a PC-hosted dedicated process must provide the persistent server.
When recruiting across platforms, state the supported client versions and control expectations in the community rules. Test the exact Workshop scenario with console participants before advertising a major event, because a PC player’s successful mod download does not by itself prove that every supported client can load the same content.
Troubleshooting: diagnose the failure instead of guessing
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm that the host or dedicated process is actually running and has finished loading the scenario.
- Check region and scenario filters; an over-specific filter can hide the listing.
- For a home host, verify that public port 2001 is forwarded to the correct local PC and that the PC’s firewall permits the traffic.
- Check whether the server is password-protected or restricted by a whitelist.
- Confirm that required registration values were not removed or altered, since hosting documentation warns this can block external connections or BattlEye operation.
The server appears but joining fails
- Read the error text and compare the server’s Workshop list with the client’s installed and activated mods.
- Restart after a mod or game update so the client is not using stale content.
- Ask an administrator whether the server is full, in a scheduled restart, or temporarily closed to unapproved players.
- Test a vanilla server. If vanilla works but the RP server does not, the likely cause is the scenario or mod collection rather than the general network path.
Players connect but suffer repeated drops
- Compare whether the issue affects one player, everyone on one network, or all players; the pattern helps separate a local connection from a server problem.
- For a home host, check upload saturation, Wi-Fi stability, router rules, and the host PC’s firewall.
- For a dedicated server, inspect provider or datacenter networking, resource exhaustion, restart logs, and recent updates.
- Record the time, player count, scenario, and recent configuration change so administrators can correlate the disconnect with logs.
The scenario loads but roleplay systems are missing
This usually indicates that the wrong scenario source or an incomplete mod list was selected. Recheck the host’s scenario selection and Workshop controls, then compare the live server’s advertised collection with the configuration actually running. Do not tell every player to reinstall everything until you have identified which item is missing or mismatched.
Designing a roleplay community that lasts
Technical availability does not create good RP by itself. Before launch, write a short design brief that answers what players are supposed to do, how conflict begins, and how an administrator resolves ambiguity. A server with fewer mods and clear expectations is often easier for new players to enter than one with a large but undocumented collection.
Define the play contract
- Describe the setting, factions, and normal session objective.
- Separate in-character rules from out-of-character conduct rules.
- Explain how new characters enter, leave, or change factions.
- Set expectations for voice channels, radio discipline, uniforms, and identification.
- Define prohibited behavior such as harassment, exploits, combat logging, or deliberate disruption.
Plan moderation and access
Use the least restrictive access process that protects the experience you want. A public server may need only a password and visible rules; a realism-focused event may justify an application and orientation. Whatever you choose, tell applicants how long approval normally takes, what information is requested, and how a rejected application can be reconsidered. Keep staff decisions consistent and provide a private reporting route so players do not turn the public game chat into an appeals court.
Control change
Every new mod, rule, faction, or restart policy changes the experience. Announce changes with an effective date, test them in a private session, and record the previous working configuration. Schedule disruptive updates outside the community’s main event window. If a mod must be removed, explain what gameplay is affected and whether players need to update or unsubscribe before returning.
Should you rent a dedicated Arma Reforger server?
Renting is practical when you need an always-on public server but do not want to maintain home hardware, router forwarding, power, backups, and a network firewall. It is less compelling for a group that plays occasionally and already has a capable PC; a player-hosted session may meet that need without a recurring fee.
