Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma Reforger servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with Play > Tutorial, set your controls, practice a single-player scenario, and only then join an official or beginner-friendly server. That sequence teaches the map, communication and deliberate movement that Arma Reforger expects. If you plan to run games, begin with the in-game player-host flow for a private session; use a dedicated server when you need persistent availability, scripted restarts or remote administration.
This guide covers the first session, game modes, Workshop mods, server hosting, administration, hardware requirements and the fixes for common joining and mod-loading problems. Menu names and platform behavior can change with updates, so verify them against the current game build.
Your first hour in Arma Reforger
Arma Reforger is a communication-heavy military sandbox rather than a run-and-gun tutorial shooter. You will get more from your first session by learning the interface and map in a quiet environment than by entering a large, heavily modded event immediately.
- Complete the tutorial. From the main menu open Play > Tutorial. The entry may require scrolling through the Play list. Follow the movement, weapon, interaction and navigation lessons instead of skipping them.
- Set controls and audio. Open Main Menu > Settings > Controls. Check movement, stance, lean, weapon handling, map, radio and push-to-talk bindings. Adjust master, effects and voice volume so radio traffic is intelligible without drowning out environmental cues.
- Practice alone. Launch a single-player scenario and rehearse moving between cover, reading the map, identifying friendly markers and using the radio. This is where you should discover an uncomfortable keybind or an audio problem.
- Join a suitable server. Open the Multiplayer tile and read the server description. Start with an official server or a community server that describes itself as beginner-friendly, has clear rules and lists any required mods.
Expect to communicate, check your map and move deliberately. A short practice session prevents the most common first-game frustrations: getting lost, missing a radio call, or joining a server with content you have not downloaded.

Choose the right way to play
Steam describes Arma Reforger as supporting multiplayer, co-op and single-player play. Bohemia Interactive presents Conflict as a core battle mode and Game Master as the tool for creating and running scenarios for other players. The Workshop and the Enfusion creator ecosystem add community missions, assets and features.

There is no authoritative published player-count statistic to use as a universal expectation for a session. Capacity, teamwork and pacing depend on the scenario, platform, server settings and current build.

Joining a server without getting stuck
- Open Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Filter or sort the list so you can distinguish official servers from community servers.
- Read the name, description, rules and required-content information before selecting Join.
- If the server lists Workshop content, open the Workshop and subscribe to or download the scenario and every dependency it names.
- Wait for downloads to finish, then activate the content if the game prompts you. Restart the game if the mod manager needs to retry a download.
- Return to Multiplayer and join again. A successful connection should take you into the server’s selected scenario rather than returning you to a missing-content message.
Do not assume that a server described as “vanilla” is identical to every other vanilla server; owners can still choose different scenarios, rules and parameters. Conversely, a modded server may be stable if its required set is documented and maintained.
Workshop mods: a safe, repeatable workflow
Bohemia’s Workshop guidance describes the content as community-created. Workshop downloads can include dependencies, so subscribing to a headline scenario alone may not be enough. The same guide says that downloaded playable content appears in Scenarios, while modded assets can be filtered in the Game Master Entity Browser.
Install a scenario and its dependencies
- Open the Workshop tile from the main menu.
- Find the scenario or asset collection named by the server or event organizer.
- Subscribe to or download the item and inspect its dependency list.
- Download every dependency before attempting to launch the scenario.
- Check Scenarios for the new entry. If it is absent, restart the game and allow the mod manager to retry.
- For Game Master play, open the Entity Browser and apply the modded-asset filter to confirm that the content is active.
Keep a known-good mod set
For troubleshooting, maintain a small profile containing only the scenario and its confirmed dependencies. Add optional mods one at a time. Record each Workshop ID and the version or update date visible in the client. This makes it possible to identify the last change when a previously working session stops loading.

Why a player can still be rejected
Bohemia’s mod guidance states that players on a server must use the same required mod set. A missing dependency, an outdated local copy or an extra incompatible add-on can therefore prevent a join. Remove unneeded additions, let the client finish updating, and compare your list with the server’s published list rather than guessing.

Workshop content is not automatically endorsed by Bohemia Interactive. Treat descriptions, update history and the server owner’s documentation as your basis for deciding whether to install it.
Hosting a private game
The in-game host flow creates a player-hosted server. Bohemia’s host guidance positions this option for a quick private session with friends, selected settings, AI opponents or a mod experiment. It is the fastest way to test a scenario without maintaining a separate machine.
Player-host setup
- Open the multiplayer host option from the game menus.
- Select the scenario or world you want to run.
- Choose the platform and session settings offered by the host screen.
- Set a recognizable server name and a short rule description, even for a private group.
- Enable only the mods required for the scenario, then start the session.
- Ask one friend to perform a clean-client join before inviting the full group. This catches missing dependencies and access problems early.
A player-hosted session normally ends when the host exits or loses the connection. It is therefore a poor fit for a community that expects an always-available world or scheduled automated restarts.
Dedicated servers for persistent communities
A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s normal game session. The server-hosting documentation distinguishes it from player hosting and identifies it as the appropriate model when you need persistent availability, scripted restarts, remote administration or a larger community. Bohemia’s support information confirms that dedicated-server tools and local or third-party hosting are supported.

Dedicated configuration covers the scenario or world, add-ons, mods and server parameters. Exact file names and switches can change with updates, so use the documentation shipped with the current dedicated-server tools rather than copying an old configuration verbatim.
Admin setup checklist
- Choose the scenario and platform. Decide whether the server is for Conflict, a Game Master event, co-op or another supported scenario, and account for whether your players are on PC, Xbox or PS5.
- Name it clearly. Include the region or time zone, play style and a concise rule summary. Avoid implying official status.
- Prove the vanilla baseline. Start with the unmodded configuration and verify that a clean client can connect, spawn and complete the opening objective.
- Add content incrementally. Install one mod or dependency group at a time. Record Workshop IDs, versions and load order in a change log.
- Protect administration credentials. Set a strong, unique admin password and do not paste it into public chat, server names, screenshots or shared configuration repositories.
- Test remote administration. Confirm that an authorized administrator can authenticate and perform the intended moderation action without granting credentials to ordinary players.
- Document rules and the mod set. Publish the exact required list, dependencies, voice expectations, restart schedule and contact method before advertising an event.
- Keep rollback copies. Save a known-good configuration before applying game, tool or mod updates. If an update breaks startup, restore the copy and re-test changes individually.
Becoming an administrator
Server administration is separate from being a Game Master. A Game Master directs a scenario from inside the game; an administrator controls access, configuration and moderation for the server itself.
Authenticate in the server
The admin reference documents the chat command #login <admin-password>. Replace the angle-bracketed value with the password configured for the server, then submit the command through the server’s supported chat or console interface. Never publish the real password in a guide, screenshot or public channel.
Maintain an admin list
The same reference documents admin-list settings. Use the current configuration syntax supplied with your server build to define which accounts or identifiers receive administrative rights. After editing the list, restart or reload the server as required by that build and test with a non-owner account.

- Give routine moderators only the permissions needed for kicks, bans or rule enforcement.
- Reserve configuration and credential access for a small owner group.
- Log who changed the scenario, mod set or server parameters and when.
- Remove former staff promptly and rotate the password after any suspected disclosure.
Hardware, storage and platform checks
Valve’s Steam listing published the following figures in 2023. They are purchase-page requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, and updates can change the practical experience.

Leave additional disk headroom for Workshop downloads, updates and temporary files; the listed storage numbers describe the game listing, not every future mod collection. CPU, GPU, memory pressure, resolution and server activity all affect performance, so the table should be treated as a compatibility check rather than an independent benchmark.
Bohemia’s support page says Xbox and PS5 support mods, while storage and performance limits can differ from PC. Console players should check the current platform-specific limits before subscribing to a large collection or promising cross-platform content.

The tutorial or scenario is hard to find
Scroll through the entries under Play; the official Getting Started page places the tutorial at Play > Tutorial. If the item still does not appear, restart the client and verify that the game has finished updating.
A server says content is missing
Read its required-mod list, download the named scenario and every dependency, and check that the scenario appears under Scenarios. Restart when the mod manager reports a retry. Remove optional mods until your active set exactly matches the server’s requirement.
The server loads but modded objects are absent
Confirm that the add-on is active for the current scenario. In Game Master, use the Entity Browser’s modded-asset filter. If the item is still absent, check the dependency chain and test the content in a clean, minimal profile.

Friends cannot join a player-hosted game
Have one friend try a clean-client connection first. Recheck the host’s visibility and access settings, then compare the friend’s mod set with the host’s active set. A dedicated server is the more reliable option if the host’s connection or availability is the recurring failure point.

Restore the last known-good configuration, confirm that the vanilla scenario starts, and then reintroduce updated mods one at a time. Compare Workshop IDs and versions with your change log before reopening the server to the community.
A practical progression from recruit to organizer
Session one: learn the interface
Finish the tutorial, bind controls, practice radio use and complete a short single-player scenario. Your goal is reliable movement, map orientation and communication—not speed.
Sessions two and three: join organized play
Choose an official or beginner-friendly community server, read its rules, and follow squad instructions. Ask where the rally point, logistics route and current objective are before moving out.
After you understand the loop: try Game Master
Use a minimal mod set and build a small scenario for friends. Add entities gradually, explain the objective and keep a fallback plan if an asset fails to load.

When a group needs continuity: move to dedicated hosting
Prove the scenario with player hosting first, then migrate the tested configuration to a dedicated server. Publish the rules and exact mod list, protect credentials, test a clean join and preserve a rollback copy before each update.
What to verify before publishing a server
- The current game and dedicated-server builds are compatible.
- A clean client can connect to the vanilla configuration.
- The scenario, add-ons, mods and dependencies are recorded by Workshop ID and version.
- The server name, rules, restart schedule and moderation contact are visible.
- At least one administrator can authenticate using the configured admin-list settings.
- PC, Xbox and PS5 participants are told about any platform-specific storage or performance limits.
- A rollback configuration exists and has been tested.
Arma Reforger becomes easier to enjoy when learning, joining and hosting are treated as separate steps. Build confidence in an unmodded session, add Workshop content deliberately, and only take on dedicated administration after a clean baseline works.
