Arma Reforger’s Game Master is a live multiplayer scenario-directing mode. An authorized host or administrator places units, vehicles, objectives and other assets while players are already in the mission, then changes events as the situation develops. You can play alone, join a server, or host your own session, but the controls available to you depend on the server’s permissions and configuration.
What Game Master means in Arma Reforger
Game Master is not simply a mission editor that you use before pressing Start. It is a real-time experience in which one authorized player curates events and shapes the battlefield while other players carry out the mission. Bohemia Interactive describes the mode as suitable for “curating events, placing assets, or just exploring by oneself.” In its version 1.0 release material, the company explains that players can edit scenarios in Game Master and manage events as they unfold.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That arrangement creates an asymmetric multiplayer session:
- Players receive the situation created by the Game Master and act within it.
- The Game Master controls the flow by placing available assets and adjusting events during play.
- The server host or administrator determines who is authorized to open the Game Master interface.
The mode can be used for a guided operation, an improvised battle, a training exercise, or solo experimentation. The exact units, vehicles, objectives and other assets available to you depend on the selected scenario, terrain, server configuration and any installed content.

What you need before starting
You need Arma Reforger installed on a supported platform. Game Master is part of the game’s multiplayer and scenario system; it is not a separate application or an independent purchase described in the available documentation.
Your practical requirements depend on how you intend to play:
- Solo: select Game Master and use the play option after choosing a terrain.
- As a connected player: use the server browser to find a session that is running a Game Master scenario.
- As a host: create a multiplayer session from the in-game Host menu. Player-hosted sessions are documented as available on PC.
- As a community operator: use a dedicated server if you want a server process that runs independently of a player’s game client. Bohemia Interactive also documents hosting through third-party providers.
No universal player-count, map-size, session-length or performance figure is established in the available official material, so those values should not be assumed for every Game Master server.
How to start a Game Master multiplayer session
The official Game Master tutorial presents three choices after you select a terrain: Play, Find server and Host. Use the path that matches your role.
Join an existing server
- Open Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Open the server browser and choose Find server.
- Check the listed scenario and terrain. Select a server running Game Master rather than Conflict or Combat Ops.
- Join the session. You will normally enter as a player unless the server has granted you Game Master access.
- Wait for the server’s role or assignment process before attempting to open the Game Master interface.
A server appearing in the browser does not guarantee that every connected player can direct the scenario. The host or declared administrator always has access, while public and community servers can apply their own permission setup.

- Team up in intense 8-player co-operative gameplay
- Compete in objective-based PVP matches with up to 20 players
- Get immersed with realistic ballistics and stunning attention to detail
- Fully customize your character and weapons
- Unprecedented audio design with positional voice-chat for a heart-pounding atmosphere
Host a session from the game
- Open Multiplayer.
- Choose Host, then select Host new server.
- Select the Game Master scenario and a terrain that the session offers.
- Start the session and invite or wait for players to connect, depending on how you are organizing the match.
- Enter the Game Master role as the host, then configure the scenario while the session is running.
Bohemia Interactive calls this a player-hosted listen server: the game client starts the server and the host also participates as a player. The documentation identifies this in-game player-hosting path as available on PC.

- Open the Game Master mode and select a terrain.
- Choose Play instead of Find server or Host.
- Use the Game Master tools to place assets and explore the scenario without other connected players.
Solo play is useful for learning the interface and testing how your scenario develops, but it does not provide the same player-versus-director interaction as a multiplayer session.
Who can use the Game Master controls?
Permissions are controlled by the server. The official Game Master reference states that the server host, or the player declared as server admin, always has access to the Game Master interface.
That rule has several practical consequences:
- Joining a Game Master server does not automatically make you a Game Master.
- On a private session, the host can keep control for themselves or assign access according to the server’s setup.
- On a public or community server, the scenario may be running continuously while only an administrator can place assets or manage events.
- If the Game Master controls are missing, first confirm your role rather than assuming the mode failed to load.
Permission behavior can vary with the scenario and server configuration. Do not promise that every player can open the interface unless the server has explicitly granted that access.
What the Game Master does during play
Once authorized, the Game Master works inside the live session rather than preparing a fixed mission and leaving it untouched. The core loop is:
Rank #3
- Strategic Arctic Warfare: Master classic Axis & Allies gameplay mechanics with a thrilling G.I. Joe twist as you command forces across frozen terrain and battle for dominance of the Arctic Circle
- Over 100 Detailed Miniatures: Lead Admiral Keel-Haul and Snow Job against Cobra Commander with premium plastic figures representing elite military units in intense combat scenarios
- Three Unique Scenarios: Experience multiple campaigns with different strategic challenges, environmental mechanics like the Weather Dominator, and endless replayability for serious strategy enthusiasts
- Easy to Learn Strategy: Pick up the intuitive ruleset quickly while enjoying deep tactical decision-making that rewards careful planning and competitive gameplay among two to four players
- Immersive Tabletop Experience: Create unforgettable gaming nights with friends and family using beautifully designed components that bring the nostalgic G.I. Joe universe to life on your battlefield
- Observe the current battlefield and the players’ position.
- Open the Asset Browser with Tab.
- Select an available unit, vehicle, objective or other asset.
- Place the asset in the world and continue adjusting the situation as the mission develops.
- Use Space for the placement or player-unit teleport action described in the official tutorial, where that action is available.
The available asset list is not necessarily identical on every server. Scenario selection, terrain, installed modifications and server rules can change what can be selected and placed. A Game Master therefore directs the material the session exposes; the role is not a guarantee that every object in the game is available at any time.
Because changes happen while players are operating, the Game Master can react to their progress instead of relying on a predetermined sequence. For example, the director can introduce another force, add a vehicle or create a new objective when the current situation calls for it. The players then respond to the updated battlefield rather than following a static script.
Listen server or dedicated server?
Bohemia Interactive distinguishes between a player-hosted listen server and a dedicated server. Both can carry a Game Master session, but they suit different operating models.
| Consideration | Player-hosted listen server | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Use Multiplayer > Host > Host new server inside the game. | Run a server process without launching a game instance for someone to play through. |
| Does the host play? | Yes. The host’s game client is both the server and a player client. | No local game instance is required for the server process; the administrator can connect separately as a player if desired. |
| Best fit | A quick private session or a small group that wants to start immediately. | A community that wants an independently running service and does not want the administrator’s game client to be the server. |
| Control and administration | The person who starts the session has host authority while operating it. | Administration is handled through the dedicated-server setup and its configured permissions. |
| Availability | The session is tied to the host’s active game session. | The server process can be operated as a persistent service independently of a player’s local game client. |
| Hosting location | Runs from the player’s machine and connection. | Can be operated on suitable infrastructure, including a third-party hosting service; Bohemia confirms that third-party hosting is supported. |
A listen server is the shortest path from menu to mission, but the host must also be present in the game. A dedicated server is more appropriate when a community needs a service that can remain available without the administrator keeping a game client open.
Game Master compared with Conflict and Combat Ops
Bohemia Interactive’s Boot Camp material identifies Conflict, Combat Ops and Game Master as the three primary modes. They are not interchangeable labels for the same multiplayer experience.
| Mode | Player role | Objective structure | Who controls the situation? | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game Master | Players operate inside a scenario directed in real time. | The situation can change as the Game Master places assets and manages events. | An authorized host or administrator directs the live mission. | Guided events, improvised scenarios, experimentation or solo exploration. |
| Conflict | Players select a side and fight over Everon or Arland. | The mode is organized around opposing sides and territorial fighting. | The game mode supplies the conflict framework rather than a player continuously directing every event. | Large-scale side-versus-side operations. |
| Combat Ops | One player or a cooperative group takes on missions against enemy AI. | Players work through the supplied cooperative mission structure. | The mission framework and enemy AI provide the opposition. | Solo or cooperative operations against computer-controlled enemies. |
Choose Game Master when you want a human director to shape the mission as it happens. Choose Conflict when the attraction is fighting for a side across Everon or Arland. Choose Combat Ops for a solo or cooperative mission against enemy AI without a player acting as a live scenario director.
Why a server may not appear in the browser
Server-browser visibility is affected by more than the server’s existence. Bohemia Interactive’s support information identifies several factors that can change what you see:
- Filters: an active mode, terrain, region, ping or platform filter can hide a valid result.
- Platform restrictions: a server may not accept your platform or may be configured for a specific platform combination.
- Ping limits: servers can be excluded when their response time falls outside the configured limit.
- Region: regional settings can narrow the list even when a server is online elsewhere.
- Crossplay settings: crossplay configuration can affect which sessions are listed or joinable.
- Scenario and terrain: a server running another mode or a terrain you did not select will not be the Game Master session you are looking for.
When troubleshooting, clear or broaden filters first, verify that the server is running Game Master, check the platform and crossplay requirements, and then confirm that your ping and region settings are not excluding it. If you can join but cannot direct the scenario, check the server’s host or administrator permissions.

Arma Reforger supports casual public matches as well as milsim communities. The practical experience differs by platform and server configuration, especially when crossplay and filtering are involved.
Bohemia Interactive’s support information also states that mods are supported on Xbox and PlayStation 5. Storage capacity and performance limits can differ from PC, so a heavily modified server may not present identical loading or content conditions on every platform. A server’s mod requirements and crossplay rules still determine whether a particular player can see and join it.

- Dress in style for duty on Everon. Built to answer the call of military service and survive Arma for days at a time, so take a day off the battlefield duty and dress to impress your squad with our low weight but high cool reforger inspired army design.
- Compatible with all versions of Arma so PC Gamers and Console Soldiers can spend Dayz in Reforger Gaming in comfort and style on Everon. A great gamer gift for any military army simulator player.
- Standard fit offers a balanced silhouette that's not too loose or tight
- High-performance moisture-wicking material with UPF 50 protection

For a mixed-platform group, agree on the required scenario, terrain, crossplay setting and mods before starting. That avoids treating a missing server or unavailable asset as a Game Master error when the actual cause is platform or content compatibility.
Practical setup decisions
Use solo Play when learning the tools
Solo Play lets you open the mode without coordinating players. Use it to become familiar with terrain selection, the Asset Browser and the placement workflow before directing a public event.
Use a listen server for a one-off group session
Choose the in-game Host path when one person is available to start and play throughout the session. It requires less operational setup and gives the host immediate authority, but the server is tied to that player’s active game session.
Use a dedicated server for an ongoing community
A dedicated server is the better fit when the service should run independently of the administrator’s game client. Plan permissions and scenario availability before inviting players, because being able to connect does not by itself grant Game Master control.
Tell players what role they have
Before the mission begins, state whether participants are ordinary players or authorized Game Masters. This prevents players from troubleshooting missing controls when the server is intentionally limiting access.

Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Game Master is a live, human-directed scenario mode, not only a pre-game editor.
- Use Multiplayer > Find server to join or Multiplayer > Host > Host new server to create a player-hosted session.
- The server host or declared administrator always has Game Master access; other players depend on the server’s permission setup.
- Open the Asset Browser with Tab; the tutorial identifies Space for the relevant placement or player-unit teleport action.
- A listen server includes the host as a player, while a dedicated server runs synchronization without a local game instance serving as the player’s client.
- Conflict and Combat Ops provide different structures: side-based fighting over Everon or Arland, and solo or cooperative missions against enemy AI.
- Filters, platform restrictions, ping, region, crossplay and mods all affect what servers and content you can see.
