Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma 3 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
An Arma 3 server version mismatch means your client and the server do not have identical compatible game data. The fastest fix is to restart Steam and the Arma 3 Launcher, put both sides on the same game branch, verify your game files, install every required Workshop mod at the server’s revision, and then check whether the server itself has been updated or is loading the wrong installation. If the error names a PBO or BISIGN file, remove that local file, verify or redownload it, and contact the administrator if the server copy is still different.
What an Arma 3 version mismatch actually means
Arma 3 compares the data used by your PC with the data advertised by the multiplayer server. A mismatch appears when those sets are not compatible. “Version” therefore does not mean only the number shown on the game’s main menu. It can include the base-game build, the release branch, loaded add-ons, Workshop mod revisions, PBO content, BISIGN signatures, and the installation from which the dedicated server starts.
Bohemia Interactive groups failed connections into three broad categories: a different game version, required user-created add-ons or mods, and connection obstacles such as firewalls. In practice, troubleshooting is quickest when you test those categories separately instead of repeatedly trying to join the same server.
The five checks that matter
- Branch and build: The client and server must use compatible stable or experimental-development data.
- Base-game integrity: Damaged, incomplete, or stale files can make an otherwise current installation look different.
- Mod identity and revision: Having a mod with the right name is not enough if its files differ from the server’s copy.
- Server installation and paths: A dedicated server can accidentally load data or add-ons from another Arma installation.
- Network reachability: Firewalls and other obstacles can prevent a connection even after the data matches.
Use this order before changing anything else
- Leave the server and exit Arma 3. Close the game and the Arma 3 Launcher rather than leaving either process running in the background.
- Restart Steam. A restart gives Steam an opportunity to finish a queued Arma 3 patch or Workshop download. Do not launch the game until pending updates have completed.
- Restart the Arma 3 Launcher. This refreshes the server browser’s mod associations and lets subscribed Workshop items finish downloading.
- Check the branch. Confirm that your installation is on the same branch as the server. An experimental-development server can differ from the normal public build.
- Verify the game files. In Steam, open Arma 3’s properties and run Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the operation to finish before launching.
- Load every required mod. Use the launcher’s server entry or mod list to enable all required Workshop items. Allow missing items to subscribe and download, then restart the launcher if it asks you to.
- Read the exact error. A named PBO or BISIGN points to a file discrepancy; a generic inability to reach the server points more strongly toward firewall or network rules.
- Escalate server-side problems. If your branch, verified files, and mods match but the same mismatch remains, the administrator must update or clean the server installation.
This sequence avoids destructive steps such as reinstalling the whole game before you know whether the problem is a single Workshop file or a server that was never patched.

Fix the client: branch, build, and Steam files
1. Put your client on the server’s branch
Arma 3 can be distributed through more than one release branch. A server running the experimental-development branch may use game data that is not compatible with a client on the ordinary stable branch, and the reverse is also true. Ask the administrator which branch the server expects if the browser does not make it clear.
In Steam, open the game’s properties and locate the Betas or branch-selection control. Select the branch requested by the server, let Steam download the associated files, and restart the launcher. If the server is on the normal public build, leave the client on that build rather than selecting an experimental option merely because it is available.

Do not compare only the date of your last update. Two machines can report that they are “up to date” while being on different branches. Branch selection is the first distinction to settle.
2. Verify integrity after an update or failed mod download
Steam’s Verify integrity of game files check compares your local base-game files with the files expected for the selected build and replaces damaged or missing data. Run it after changing branches, after a crash during an update, or when the error persists without naming a mod.
Verification can take time and may reacquire files. Do not interrupt it or launch Arma 3 while Steam is still repairing the installation. When it finishes, restart the launcher so its cached mod and server information reflects the repaired files.

Verification addresses the base game. It does not guarantee that every Workshop item is at the server’s current revision, so a successful verification does not rule out a mod mismatch.
Fix Workshop mod and add-on mismatches
Enable every required item
A server can require user-created add-ons in addition to the base game. The Arma 3 Launcher can associate a server’s required mods with Workshop items and subscribe to missing items when the server has configured the relevant identifiers. Open the server entry in the launcher, accept the requested subscriptions, and wait for each download to complete before joining.
After downloading, confirm that the required items are enabled in the launch preset. A subscribed item that remains disabled is functionally missing when Arma 3 starts. Remove duplicate or obsolete entries from the preset if the launcher shows several copies of what appears to be the same mod; loading two revisions can produce a different data set from the server’s single revision.
Recognize a revision mismatch
“The mod is installed” does not prove that it matches. A maintainer may have published a new revision, while the server still runs the previous one, or the server may have updated before your Workshop client did. The relevant question is whether the files used at launch are the same compatible revision.
Let Workshop downloads finish, then restart the launcher and re-open the server’s mod list. If the administrator supplies a required mod collection or preset, use that definition rather than assembling a similar list manually. Keep the exact load order and optional/required status the administrator specifies; adding unrelated local add-ons can also change the data presented to the server.

Repair one broken Workshop item
If the error identifies a mod rather than the base game, unsubscribe and resubscribe to that Workshop item only when normal updating has not corrected it. After resubscribing, allow the complete download, verify the item is enabled, and try the server again. A full Arma 3 reinstall is rarely the appropriate first response to a single named mod file.
When the error names a PBO or BISIGN file
A PBO error is a particularly useful clue. Bohemia Interactive states that if you cannot join because of a PBO error, the server is using different data from your client. BISIGN files are associated signatures for add-on data; a mismatch can occur when either the PBO or its accompanying signature is stale, damaged, or from another revision.
Client recovery procedure
- Write down the complete PBO name and the folder or mod named in the error.
- Exit Arma 3 and the launcher.
- Open the local installation or Workshop mod folder indicated by the error.
- Delete the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file. Remove only the files identified by the message, not an entire unrelated mod collection.
- Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files for a base-game file, or re-download the relevant Workshop item when the PBO belongs to a mod.
- Restart the launcher, enable the repaired item, and test the server again.
Deleting the local copy does not change the server. It simply forces Steam or Workshop to obtain a clean copy. If the same named file still differs after that download, the server administrator may need to update or clean the server-side copy.
Why deleting only the named files is safer
PBO and BISIGN errors often identify a narrow discrepancy. Removing an entire mod folder can discard settings, increase download time, and make it harder to tell which change solved the problem. Target the named files first, then expand the repair only if verification or the administrator’s instructions require it.

Update the server after every applicable game patch
A client can be fully current while a dedicated server remains on an older build. Bohemia Interactive has documented a false version-mismatch report that was resolved by updating the server installation. After a game patch, stop the server, update its installation, and start it again before asking players to repair their clients.

Do not assume that an unattended update completed because the server process still launches. Confirm that the files in the directory used by the service or startup script are the ones that Steam updated. A service account, scheduled task, or second Steam library can point to a different installation.
Prevent the server from loading the wrong Arma installation
A machine used for both playing and hosting can contain more than one Arma installation. The dedicated server may then load full client data or add-ons from an unintended path. The dedicated-server documentation recommends an explicit empty -mod= workaround when that happens. The known-issues guidance likewise recommends an explicit -mod= list when add-ons are being loaded from the wrong installation.
Review the complete startup command, service definition, shortcut, or script. Make the executable path, working directory, profile location, and mod paths explicit. If no server-side mods should load, use the documented empty -mod= setting rather than allowing an inherited client path. If mods are required, list the intended server-side directories explicitly and remove accidental paths from environment variables or wrapper scripts.
Keep server mods synchronized
Record the exact Workshop items and revisions required by the mission or preset. Update the server’s copies deliberately, restart the process after an update, and test a connection with a clean client. Updating a mod on the server without communicating the new requirement can create a wave of client-side mismatch reports; leaving the server on an old revision while clients auto-update causes the same problem in reverse.

Build and mod alignment cannot fix a blocked route. Bohemia’s support guidance includes firewalls and other connection obstacles as a separate category. Once you have verified the branch, repaired files, and matched the required mods, inspect the network path.

Signs that data is the likely cause
- The server appears in the browser, but joining fails with a version, PBO, BISIGN, add-on, or signature message.
- The error names a specific file or mod.
- Other servers work, but one server with a particular mod set does not.
- The administrator recently changed the branch, mission collection, or server mods.
Signs that reachability is the likely cause
- The server is not visible or disappears from the browser.
- The client reports a timeout or cannot establish a session without identifying a file.
- Multiple otherwise compatible servers fail in the same way.
- A firewall, security suite, router rule, or managed network changed shortly before the problem began.
Check that Arma 3 and Steam are allowed through the local firewall, and ask the network administrator to review outbound and inbound rules where applicable. Avoid disabling security software permanently; use a narrowly scoped rule and restore normal protection after testing.

Common mistakes that make the mismatch worse
Changing several variables at once
Switching branch, deleting every mod, reinstalling Arma 3, and changing firewall rules in one session destroys the evidence in the original error. Make one controlled change, restart the launcher when required, and test again. Keep a short note of the branch, enabled preset, named file, and result.
Assuming a visible mod is the correct mod
The launcher can display an item that is subscribed but disabled, outdated, duplicated, or loaded from a different local path. Compare the server’s required list with the actual launch preset, not merely with the Workshop subscriptions page.
Verifying files while Steam is still updating
A verification started before a queued patch or Workshop download finishes can leave you diagnosing an incomplete state. Wait for all Steam activity to stop, then verify once.
Reinstalling before checking the server
If several players report the same mismatch immediately after a server patch, the server’s build or mod path is a stronger suspect than every client independently becoming corrupt. Give the administrator the exact error and named file so the server can be checked.
A practical escalation message for the administrator
When you have completed the client sequence, send a concise report instead of “it still does not work.” Include the server name, the branch you selected, the time Steam verification completed, the exact PBO or BISIGN name if present, the Workshop items enabled, and whether other servers accept your connection. This tells the administrator whether to inspect the server update, mod revision, startup path, or network rules.
For administrators, ask the affected player whether the failure is shared by other clients. One affected player after a server update suggests a local branch, file, or Workshop problem; many affected players with the same named file suggest a server-side revision or installation-path problem. A server that is invisible or times out without a data error should be investigated as a reachability issue instead.
When the connection should work again
A successful repair has a clear chain: Steam has finished updating, the client and server are on the same branch, base-game verification has completed, every required Workshop item is downloaded and enabled at the expected revision, and any named PBO/BISIGN file has been replaced or the server copy corrected. If all five conditions are true and the connection still fails, stop repeating client repairs and have the administrator inspect the dedicated-server installation and network path.
