Arma 3’s official dedicated-server figures are a starting threshold, not a guarantee of smooth play. Bohemia Interactive lists a low-end minimum and a higher recommended configuration, but real capacity is determined by mission scripting, AI simulation, mods, connected players, network quality and whatever else shares the machine. Choose hardware by measured server performance and memory headroom rather than by GHz or player-count rules of thumb.
Official Arma 3 server requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation gives two baseline configurations. The minimum is intended to establish that the server can run; the recommended figure is a more sensible starting point for a general-purpose installation. Neither specification promises a particular player count, mission, mod collection or server-FPS result.

The figures come from Bohemia Interactive Community’s dedicated-server documentation. That documentation does not publish a current chart that converts players, mods or mission types into a guaranteed RAM amount or a specific processor model. Treat the table as a floor for planning and testing, then size the machine around the workload you actually intend to run.

What determines how much capacity you need?
An Arma 3 server is not just a network relay. It runs the authoritative simulation for units, AI, scripts, vehicles, triggers and mission systems. Two servers with the same number of connected users can therefore have very different loads.

Mission and script complexity
A small cooperative mission with limited AI may be comfortable on modest hardware, while a scenario that continually spawns units, processes scripts and tracks a large battlefield can overwhelm a machine with the same player count. Mission design is often a larger variable than the headline number of users.
AI and entity count
AI decisions and the number of active entities increase simulation work. Decorative objects, vehicles, spawned groups and persistent scripts all contribute to the work the server must process. A mission that appears quiet to players may still be busy if scripts are polling frequently or AI groups remain active across the map.
Mods and connected users
Mods can add scripts, assets and systems that consume CPU time or memory. The documentation does not establish a fixed RAM allowance per mod or per player, so claims such as “one gigabyte per 10 players” are not reliable sizing rules. Use your actual mod list and mission when testing.
Other services on the machine
An operating system, voice service, database, monitoring agent, file synchronization job or another game server competes for resources. Reserve capacity for those services instead of treating all installed RAM and CPU time as available to Arma 3.

What CPU do you need for an Arma 3 server?
Prioritize sustained simulation performance over a simple core-count or GHz comparison. Bohemia Interactive’s configuration guidance describes server simulation as CPU-intensive and states: “When running slower, it always uses all available CPU processing power to maintain the smoothest possible gameplay.” In practical terms, a server that cannot keep up will consume the processing time available to it rather than becoming faster because more cores are present on paper.
Use the official figures as starting points
The 2.4 GHz dual-core minimum can be useful for a small test installation. The 3.5 GHz quad-core recommendation is a more appropriate baseline when you expect a real group, but it still does not identify a particular generation of processor or guarantee a mission’s performance. Newer processors with better per-core performance may outperform older chips at the same advertised frequency; virtualization limits and shared-host contention can erase that advantage.
Watch server FPS, not just utilization
The Basic Server Config File documentation says a dedicated server does not run above 50 FPS. It also identifies a server rate below 20 FPS as a possible sign of overload, with mission complexity among the possible causes. A reading below 20 is an investigation trigger, not proof that the CPU alone is defective: scripts, AI, a misbehaving mod, host contention or network conditions may be involved.

CPU utilization can be misleading. A multi-core operating system view may show spare aggregate capacity while the simulation thread is struggling. Record server FPS during the busiest part of the mission and compare it with CPU behavior, rather than judging the machine from an idle lobby.

Do not assume a higher FPS cap fixes lag
The official startup-parameter documentation describes a default dedicated-server and headless-client FPS limit of 50. Higher simulation rates mean more frequent network messages and entity or AI simulation, but the documentation notes that the practical impact may or may not be noticeable. Raising a limit is therefore not a guaranteed remedy for a server that is already overloaded; find and reduce the workload first.
How much RAM does an Arma 3 server need?
For a bare installation, the published figures are 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended. They are useful thresholds, but they are not a modern capacity calculator. Arma 3’s documentation does not define a universal amount of RAM for a given number of players, mods or mission type.
Plan for headroom
Memory must cover the server process, the operating system, loaded mission data, mod assets, logs and any companion services. If the machine reaches its limit, the operating system may page to disk or terminate a process; either outcome can turn a marginally playable server into an unstable one. A host with exactly the recommended amount leaves less room for updates, diagnostics and other applications than a host with unused capacity.

Start with the official recommended baseline, load the exact mission and mod set you intend to use, and observe memory during a full session. Check after players connect, AI is spawned and the mission reaches its busiest phase. Record the peak rather than the lobby average, and leave additional room for the operating system and maintenance tasks. If memory remains comfortable but server FPS falls, adding RAM is unlikely to solve the immediate bottleneck.

Network quality matters as much as hardware
A powerful server cannot compensate for poor connectivity. Select a location close to the majority of players, with stable latency, sufficient upstream capacity and low packet loss. A geographically distant or congested host can feel unresponsive even when server FPS is healthy.
- Latency: Round-trip delay affects how quickly player actions and server updates are experienced.
- Jitter and packet loss: Variation or dropped packets can create rubber-banding and disconnects.
- Upload capacity: The server must send state updates to all connected clients; available bandwidth depends on the mission and activity, so do not rely on a single universal number.
- Network isolation: Home connections sharing the link with uploads, streaming or backups can produce intermittent problems that look like game-server lag.
When diagnosing an incident, compare server FPS with latency and packet-loss measurements. A low server-FPS reading points toward simulation pressure; normal FPS with bad network measurements points toward the connection or route.
When a headless client helps
A headless client is an optional Arma 3 client instance that can take on AI calculations, reducing work on the main server instance. It is a workload-scaling technique, not a replacement for adequate server hardware and not a hosting plan.
The mission must support it
Headless-client offload is not automatic. The mission has to be adapted so the relevant AI work is extracted from the server and executed on the headless client. A mission that has not been designed for that split may gain little or may behave incorrectly.

When to consider one
- The server’s FPS drops during AI-heavy phases while memory and network conditions remain acceptable.
- The mission author or administrator can modify and test the mission for headless-client compatibility.
- You can provide a separate process or machine with reliable connectivity and enough resources.

Both models can work. Self-hosting gives you direct control, while managed hosting exchanges some control for simpler operations. Compare the following items instead of choosing solely by advertised RAM.

No provider-wide price, service level or resource allocation is universal. Before renting, ask for the actual RAM allocation, processor limits, virtualization policy, mod storage, backup behavior, cancellation terms and support response expectations. For self-hosting, check your upstream connection, firewall exposure, power reliability and ability to recover the machine.

A practical sizing and testing procedure
- Define the workload. Write down the intended mission, mod collection, approximate peak players, AI density and any other services that will share the host.
- Start at the official baseline. Use the 3.5 GHz quad-core and 4 GB recommendation as an initial reference, not as a promise of capacity. For a disposable test, the 2.4 GHz dual-core and 2 GB minimum can establish whether the server launches.
- Install the exact content. Test the same mission files, mods and configuration used in production. A clean server with no AI is not a representative benchmark.
- Exercise the busiest scenario. Connect the expected number of users, spawn the largest AI groups and run the mission through its heaviest scripted phase.
- Record server FPS and CPU behavior. Treat sustained readings below 20 FPS as a possible overload signal. Note whether the issue appears only during a particular mission event.
- Record peak memory. Include operating-system use and companion services. Increase the allocation when the peak leaves too little safety margin or the system begins paging.
- Check the network path. Measure latency, jitter, packet loss and upstream saturation from the players’ locations, not only from the server itself.
- Change one variable at a time. Disable a mod, reduce AI, move a service or change a host allocation, then repeat the same scenario so the result is meaningful.
- Consider a headless client. Use it only after confirming that the mission is adapted for AI offload and that the additional process has a stable connection.
Troubleshooting common symptoms

How to choose an upgrade priority
- Low server FPS with available memory: Investigate mission scripts, AI and CPU simulation performance first.
- Memory pressure or paging: Add RAM or remove competing services, then retest the same workload.
- Normal FPS but poor responsiveness: Investigate network location, packet loss and congestion.
- AI-heavy mission that remains CPU-bound: Optimize the mission or evaluate a compatible headless-client design.
- Unstable rented instance: Ask the provider about CPU contention, guaranteed resources and migration to another allocation.
The most defensible build is the smallest one that passes your own peak-load test with measurable headroom. If your mission, mods or player base changes, repeat the test rather than assuming the old result still applies.
