For a quick private session, use the Arma 3 Launcher’s built-in server mode. For a persistent or multi-instance server, install the standalone server with SteamCMD and manage its files and startup parameters directly. Windows administrators who want repeatable profiles can add FASTER2, while Arma3Sync is mainly a legacy choice for units that distribute a fixed repository. Managed hosting is the simplest operationally, but it trades infrastructure control for a recurring fee.
Which Arma 3 modded-server launcher should you use?
There is no universal best launcher. The right choice depends on whether you need a one-evening test server, a permanent public service, several profiles, a Linux deployment, or a hands-off host.

Whichever route you choose, every player must use a compatible mod set and version. A launcher can simplify installation; it cannot make incompatible content work together.
Hardware, operating-system and planning requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server documentation lists Windows and modern Linux as supported server operating systems. Its baseline guidance is a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage at minimum. The recommended baseline is a 3.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB SSD. These are vendor guidance figures, not an independent performance benchmark; large missions, many AI units, scripts, headless clients and several simultaneous instances can require more.

Decide where the server will run
- Same computer as the game: convenient for a small private test, but the game and server compete for CPU, memory and upload bandwidth.
- Separate Windows or Linux machine: better for a persistent service and easier to restart or patch without interrupting a player’s desktop.
- Managed host: avoids buying and maintaining a machine, but you depend on the provider’s panel, locations, policies and support.
Record the configuration before installing anything
Write down the intended mission, mod names and Workshop item IDs, server port choices, administrator passwords, startup flags, operating-system account and backup location. Treat this record as the source of truth for every client and every server profile. Port numbers are configuration choices: check the current server build and host documentation instead of assuming a value from another installation.
Path 1: Start a small modded server with the official Arma 3 Launcher
This is the quickest option when the server is for a small group or a temporary test. The launcher uses the same mod selection interface as the client, so it is easy to verify what you intend to load before pressing Play.

- Start the Arma 3 Launcher.
- Open Parameters, then All Parameters, and open the Host section.
- Tick Server.
- Open the Mods tab and select the required mods in the order and combination used by the mission.
- Review the selected content and press Play.
Use this route to prove that a collection loads, to test a new mission or to host an occasional private session. It is less suitable when the server must run unattended, start automatically after a reboot, expose several profiles or be administered from a Linux shell.
Keep the client and server selections aligned
The host and every player need compatible versions of the same required content. If a player lacks a required mod, has an older version or loads a conflicting optional mod, the connection can fail with a missing-content or version-mismatch message. Save the launcher preset or otherwise document the exact list so that players do not rebuild it from memory.

Path 2: Use a standalone server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the transparent, scriptable route for a long-running server. Install the standalone Arma 3 server package separately from the game client, keep its files in a dedicated directory and manage configuration and startup parameters explicitly. This separation makes backups, updates and multiple instances much easier to reason about.
Install and update the server files
- Install SteamCMD on the server operating system.
- Choose a dedicated server directory with enough space for the server, missions, logs and downloaded Workshop content. The 32 GB figures from Bohemia’s guidance are a baseline, not a promise that every mod collection will fit comfortably.
- Use SteamCMD to install the Arma 3 dedicated-server package in that directory.
- Run the same update process before a scheduled event and after a game or mod change. Keep the update procedure in a script or written runbook so another administrator can repeat it.
- Store server configuration files, mission selections and startup scripts outside disposable temporary folders, and back them up before changing a working setup.
Build the startup command deliberately
Bohemia’s startup reference documents parameters including -server, -mpmissions, -port, -password and -connect. Parameter names are case-insensitive. Any value containing spaces must be enclosed in quotation marks. Use only parameters supported by the current server build, and keep the command line under version control or in a dated administrative record.

Do not copy a command line from a different game version without checking each switch. A server can appear to start while silently ignoring an obsolete or misspelled option, leaving you with an unexpected mission, port or mod state.
Separate profiles for separate communities or missions
Create one profile per stable combination of configuration, mods and missions rather than editing a single live directory before every event. Give each profile a clear name, keep its startup parameters together and record which Workshop item IDs it expects. This arrangement also makes rollback possible: stop the affected profile, restore its previous files and restart it without disturbing unrelated instances.

Path 3: Administer Windows servers with FASTER2
FASTER2 is a Windows graphical administration tool built around SteamCMD workflows. The project listing describes automatic installation and updating of the Arma 3 server, Workshop-mod installation and updates, Steam Guard or mobile-auth support, importing presets from the Arma 3 Launcher, update checks, multiple server profiles, profile cloning, server configuration and command-line options, custom mission parameters and difficulty, headless-client support and server-browser mod display.
When FASTER2 is a strong fit
- You administer on Windows and prefer a GUI to hand-written batch files.
- You run several profiles and want to clone a known-good configuration.
- You want Workshop updates and launcher-preset imports in one place.
- You still want access to the server’s configuration and command-line options rather than a completely opaque panel.
What to verify before standardising on it
The cited FASTER2 information comes from a forum project listing, not a guarantee of a current release or maintenance schedule. Confirm the current download source, supported Arma 3 build, authentication method and backup behavior before putting a public server behind it. Keep an independent copy of profiles and startup parameters so that you can operate the server with SteamCMD directly if the GUI becomes unavailable.

Arma3Sync can make sense when a unit distributes a controlled repository and wants members to launch with a known set of files. Its installation guidance covers the launcher-options panel, executable path, run parameters, performance controls and additional parameters.
Treat it as a legacy or community option rather than the default answer for a new deployment. The available evidence is old, so verify compatibility with the current Arma 3 client, server build and operating system before investing in a repository around it. If your group does not already use an Arma3Sync repository, the official Launcher or a SteamCMD-based workflow is generally easier to maintain and explain.

Path 5: Choose managed Arma 3 hosting
Managed hosting removes much of the machine and networking work. Community reports describe panels with built-in Steam Workshop workflows that simplify mod installation, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a provider’s current price, uptime, data-center locations or terms.

What the provider usually takes care of
- Provisioning the server hardware and operating-system image.
- Installing or updating the game-server files.
- Providing a control panel for missions, mods and restarts.
- Handling some firewall, port-forwarding and connectivity tasks.
What remains your responsibility
- Checking that the panel supports the mods, DLC and server parameters your mission needs.
- Maintaining a compatible client mod list and a copy of your configuration.
- Understanding how the host performs updates, restores backups and handles failed or incompatible mod revisions.
- Verifying the provider’s current pricing, region availability, support response and cancellation terms directly on its site.
Managed hosting is the convenience choice, not automatically the cheapest choice. Compare the recurring fee with the value of your own hardware, administration time and Internet connection. Ask whether you can export configuration and mission files before you commit.

Make a modded server reliable
Use a single, documented mod manifest
Record each mod’s Workshop item ID, required dependencies, version or update date and whether it is server-only or required by clients. Distribute the same manifest to players. A name copied from a launcher display is not enough when similarly named items exist.
Stage updates instead of changing the live server
- Copy the live profile and configuration to a staging profile.
- Update the game server and Workshop content in staging.
- Start the staging instance and load the mission with a test client.
- Check logs, missing dependencies, mission scripts and player connection behavior.
- Schedule the live update only after the test succeeds, and retain the previous files for rollback.
Back up more than the executable
Back up server configuration, profile directories, mission files, startup scripts, mod manifests and administrative notes. A fresh server download cannot restore a carefully tuned mission rotation or difficulty setting.

Networking and connection troubleshooting
The server is running but nobody can see it
- Confirm the server is listening on the port selected in
-port. - Allow the server executable through the operating system firewall.
- Forward the selected port on the router to the server’s local address when hosting from a private network.
- Check that the Internet connection is not behind an arrangement that blocks inbound connections.
- Test from outside the local network; a local client may connect even when public forwarding is wrong.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
- Compare the server manifest with the player’s enabled mods and Workshop item IDs.
- Check that everyone has completed pending Workshop updates.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete versions from client launch profiles.
- Restart the server after changing its mod set rather than assuming a running process will reload content.
The server starts with the wrong mission or settings
Inspect the effective startup command and profile directory. Check quotation marks around paths containing spaces, confirm the spelling and case of parameter names, and make sure the process is using the profile you edited rather than a second copy created by a GUI tool or service wrapper.
DLC and special-content compatibility
Bohemia’s Spotrep warns that some DLC data, including Contact data, is not fully multiplayer compatible and recommends hosting it only for special use cases. Before publishing a preset, check the DLC and mod combination in the current game build. Do not assume that content loading successfully on the host means every client can join or that every mission feature is synchronized correctly.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose the official Launcher when you need a quick, private test and can tolerate manual startup and networking.
- Choose SteamCMD when uptime, scripting, Linux support, repeatable updates or several instances matter.
- Add FASTER2 when you operate on Windows and want profiles, Workshop automation and a GUI, while retaining a direct fallback to SteamCMD.
- Use Arma3Sync only when your unit already depends on its repository workflow or you have verified current compatibility.
- Choose managed hosting when eliminating hardware and port-forwarding work is worth a recurring fee and reduced infrastructure control.
Before inviting players, test a complete join with the exact client preset, mission and DLC combination you intend to publish. Keep software versions, Workshop IDs, startup parameters, firewall rules and backups documented so that a successful setup can be reproduced after an update or a hardware failure.
