Arma 3’s “Connecting failed” message is usually a compatibility or connection-path problem, not a sign that your hardware is failing. Check, in order, that your game branch and version match the server, that the complete required mod set matches, that BattlEye policy is compatible, and that firewall, antivirus, router, and Steam traffic are not being blocked. If the message names a PBO, repair the mismatched data file rather than treating it as a generic internet outage.
The sequence below starts with the checks that most often resolve a join failure and ends with the evidence an administrator needs to identify a server-side problem.
What “Connecting failed” means in Arma 3
Arma 3 can display a server in the browser while still refusing the actual join. Discovery and admission are separate stages: the browser has to receive a listing, then the client must pass version, content, anti-cheat, and network checks when it connects.
Bohemia Interactive identifies four broad causes: a different game version or branch, required user-created add-ons or mods, connection obstacles such as firewalls, and other incompatibilities between the client and server. A fifth practical category is data-file mismatch, which is commonly reported as a PBO error.

- Branch or version mismatch: the server and your installation are not running compatible builds. The experimental-development branch is one example of a branch difference that can prevent a join.
- Mod or add-on mismatch: a required Workshop item is missing, disabled, out of date, or accompanied by an extra mod the server does not accept.
- BattlEye policy or initialization failure: a protected server rejects a client that cannot initialize anti-cheat correctly or does not satisfy the server’s policy.
- Network or security interference: a firewall, antivirus product, or router disrupts the game or Steam’s multiplayer queries.
- Different data files: the client and server have different copies of a PBO or related signed data.
Record the exact server name and error text before changing settings. That small step makes it possible to tell a local configuration issue from a server that needs correction.
Use this order of checks first
Do the checks in this order so that you do not spend time changing network settings when the real problem is a missing mod or the wrong branch.

- Confirm the server’s branch and version. Compare the branch shown by the server or its administrator with the branch selected in your Arma 3 installation. A server on the experimental-development branch can be incompatible with a client on another branch. Note the displayed version and the full error.
- Open the Arma 3 Launcher and match the complete mod set. Let the launcher identify required Steam Workshop items, download them, and enable them for that server. Disable stale or additional mods when the server expects an exact set.
- Retry through the other official connection path. Use the server browser when the listing is available. If it is missing or stale and you have a valid host address and port, use Direct Connect.
- Check BattlEye status and filters. A BattlEye-protected server has a different admission requirement from a server that does not use it. The browser can filter for non-BattlEye servers; use that only to diagnose or to choose a server with a different stated policy.
- Test for security and router interference. A narrowly scoped exception for the game and Steam, or a short test on a trusted alternate network, can show whether local filtering is the cause. Restore normal protection after the test.
- Repair a named PBO or signature file. Delete the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file, verify the Arma 3 installation in Steam, or redownload the relevant Workshop mod.
- Escalate with a complete report. Send the administrator the error, server address and port, branch, active mod list, BattlEye state, and the result of both browser and Direct Connect attempts.
Check the game branch and version
A version mismatch is the first compatibility check because the client may fail before mods or network troubleshooting can help. This includes branch differences: Bohemia specifically notes that a server on the experimental-development branch may reject a client using a different branch.
What to compare
- The exact server name and the version or branch it announces.
- The branch selected for your Arma 3 installation.
- The version displayed by the launcher or game before you connect.
- Whether the server recently changed branch or updated.
What to do
- Close the join attempt and open the Arma 3 Launcher.
- Check the installation’s selected branch and version display.
- Ask the administrator which branch and version the server currently requires if the listing is unclear.
- Return both client and server to a compatible branch before changing mods or firewall rules.
If only one server rejects you while other servers using the same client work, give that administrator the recorded version details. A server-side update or branch setting may be required.
Match every mod and add-on
Modded servers do not merely require “some mods”; they can require a particular collection of Workshop content. A missing item, disabled item, stale download, or extra mod can all stop admission. Vanilla servers remove this variable, but they do not make branch, BattlEye, or network checks irrelevant.

Use the Arma 3 Launcher
- Start the Arma 3 Launcher rather than launching directly into the game.
- Choose the server’s required collection or follow its instructions for the required Steam Workshop items.
- Allow each required item to download completely.
- Enable the required items in the launcher’s active mod list.
- Disable old copies, duplicate entries, and unrelated mods when the server expects an exact set.
- Retry the connection and note any item that the launcher cannot download or enable.
When removing mods is the right fix
Players often focus on what is missing and overlook extra content. If a server publishes an exact set, remove additions left over from another server before retrying. Keep a note of the original list so you can restore it for a different server.

If the launcher cannot download a required item, fix that download first. If every required item is present and enabled but the server still rejects you, capture the mod names and versions for the administrator. The server may have an incorrect or outdated copy, which a player cannot repair locally.
Server browser or Direct Connect?
Both are official connection paths, but they solve different discovery problems. Direct Connect does not bypass compatibility checks; it only removes dependence on a current browser listing.

How to try Direct Connect
- Obtain the current host address and port from the server administrator or its published server information.
- Open Arma 3’s Direct Connect option.
- Enter the address and port exactly as supplied.
- Connect with the same branch and active mod set the server requires.
- Record whether the result differs from the browser attempt.
If Direct Connect works while the browser does not, the listing or browser query is the likely point of failure. If both paths fail with the same compatibility message, continue with branch, mod, BattlEye, or data checks.
Understand BattlEye rejections
BattlEye-protected servers can reject a client when anti-cheat initialization or policy does not match. The server administrator controls whether protection is enabled, so a player cannot make a protected server accept an incompatible client simply by retrying.

Use the filter as a diagnostic
- Open the server browser’s BattlEye filter.
- Filter for non-BattlEye servers only if you are testing whether the protection requirement is involved.
- Try a server whose stated policy matches your client.
- Do not treat a non-BattlEye result as a universal repair; it is a different server-access policy.
If non-BattlEye servers work but protected servers do not, report the exact BattlEye message and initialization state to the affected server’s administrator. If no server works, continue with the broader version, mod, and network checks.
Remove firewall, antivirus, and router interference
Bohemia’s known-issues guidance warns that some antivirus programs and firewalls can prevent the game from starting or hamper it while running. It also notes that some routers and firewalls identify Steam multiplayer server queries as spam traffic. That can produce a visible listing followed by a failed join, or prevent the listing from appearing at all.
Test safely
- Close Arma 3 and Steam before changing a security rule.
- In the firewall or security product, create a narrowly scoped allow rule for the Arma 3 executable and Steam rather than disabling protection globally.
- If the security product has separate private and public network profiles, apply the exception only to the trusted profile you are using.
- Start Steam and Arma 3, then retry the same server.
- If possible, test once on a trusted alternate network. A result that changes only on the alternate network points to the original router, firewall, or upstream network.
- Restore the normal protection policy and remove a temporary test exception that did not help.
What not to conclude
A successful connection after a security exception identifies interference, but it does not justify leaving broad protection disabled. Keep the exception limited to the game and Steam, and ask the network or security-product administrator for a permanent narrowly scoped rule if this is a managed system.
Fix PBO and signature errors
When Arma 3 reports a PBO failure, Bohemia defines it as a data mismatch: the server is using different data from the client. It is therefore more specific than a generic “internet problem.”
Client-side repair sequence
- Read the full error and identify the named PBO.
- Close Arma 3 and the launcher.
- Delete the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file from the relevant local content.
- In Steam, run the Arma 3 file-verification function.
- If the PBO belongs to a Workshop mod, redownload that mod after verification.
- Re-enable only the corrected mod set in the Arma 3 Launcher and retry.
Keep the error text before deleting anything; the filename tells the administrator which data set is involved.

When the administrator must act
If verification and a clean Workshop download do not resolve the same PBO error, the server’s copy may be wrong or out of date. Send the filename, server address and port, branch, and active mod list to the administrator. The server owner may need to update or clean the server data; replacing files on your computer cannot fix an incorrect server copy.
Choose the right branch of troubleshooting for your symptom

Separate vanilla, modded, and anti-cheat choices
These are not interchangeable “fixes”; each changes what the server expects from a connecting player.

What to send when you need help
A report that says only “I cannot join” leaves the administrator guessing. Include the facts that distinguish each failure category.
- Exact error text, including any PBO, BISIGN, or BattlEye wording.
- Server name, host address, and port.
- Client branch and displayed version; include whether the server uses the experimental-development branch.
- Complete active mod list and the server’s required list, if published.
- Whether BattlEye is enabled on the server and what initialization or rejection message appeared.
- Whether the server appeared in the browser, whether its listing looked current, and whether Direct Connect produced the same result.
- Whether another server works from the same installation and network.
- Whether a narrowly scoped security exception or trusted-network test changed the result.
This information lets an administrator decide whether to update the server, correct its mod deployment, change a policy, or investigate a network path.
If you are hosting the server
Players and administrators troubleshoot different sides of the same connection. A dedicated Arma 3 host must account for hardware, bandwidth, ports, firewall controls, BattlEye support, Workshop mod deployment, backups, and server location. Bohemia Interactive’s FAQ says practical capacity depends on hardware and bandwidth, with typical scenarios serving from 2 to 64 players; that is a planning range, not a guarantee for every mission or mod set.

When several players report the same PBO, branch, or mod failure, inspect the server copy and deployment process before asking every player to reinstall. A server-side mismatch can reproduce across otherwise healthy clients.
Last-resort client maintenance
After the official compatibility, content, BattlEye, security, and data checks, update your graphics drivers and verify Arma 3 files in Steam. These steps are sensible maintenance, but they should not replace the earlier checks: a driver refresh cannot make a server’s branch or mod list match your client.
If the issue persists, stop changing multiple variables at once. Retry the same server after one change, preserve the resulting error, and provide the complete evidence set to the administrator. That method identifies whether the remaining fault is local, network-related, or on the server.
Bottom line
For most Arma 3 join failures, start with branch/version and exact mod matching, then test the alternate connection path, BattlEye policy, and local network security. Treat a PBO as a specific client/server data mismatch. If clean local content, compatible settings, and a controlled network test still fail, the server administrator needs the error, address and port, branch, mod list, and BattlEye state to correct the server-side configuration.
