Choose the Arlo Pro 6 if you want USB-C charging and Bluetooth setup, and your existing system is a supported VMB5000 or VMB4540 SmartHub—or you plan to connect the camera directly to Wi-Fi. Choose the Arlo Pro 5S if you rely on SecureLink or want to keep a compatible VMB4000 or VMB4500 base station in your setup. The Pro 6 is not a universal upgrade: it does not support SecureLink, and its listed SmartHub support is limited to VMB5000 and VMB4540.

Both cameras offer 2K HDR video, a 160-degree diagonal field of view, color night vision, a spotlight, a siren, and two-way audio. For most buyers, compatibility, charging, and the features they expect from a paid plan matter more than the headline video specifications.

Which camera should you choose?

Choose the Pro 6 for its charging and setup changes

The Pro 6 is the better fit if USB-C is more convenient for your charging routine or you value Bluetooth installation. It also makes sense for a new installation if you plan to use a supported SmartHub or connect directly to Wi-Fi. Arlo describes it as offering “increased compatibility and more installation flexibility” than the Pro 5; that characterization should be read alongside the specific limits: the Pro 6 does not support SecureLink and lists only the VMB5000 and VMB4540 SmartHubs.

Arlo says the Pro 6 battery provides up to 15% more battery life than the Pro 5S. Treat that as a manufacturer comparison, not a promise about how long your camera will run between charges. Actual runtime depends on settings and use, and no independent comparative battery test is established here.

That makes the Pro 6 a practical choice when you are setting up a camera without legacy equipment to preserve, or when your hub is already one of the two listed SmartHubs. Bluetooth installation and USB-C can make setup and charging more convenient, but neither feature overrides the compatibility check. If your preferred setup depends on SecureLink or a VMB4000/VMB4500, those conveniences do not make the Pro 6 a drop-in replacement.

Choose the Pro 5S to preserve an existing setup

The Pro 5S is the more straightforward choice if your Arlo Home Security system uses SecureLink, or if you want to retain a compatible VMB4000 or VMB4500 base station. Its product page also lists VMB4540 and VMB5000 compatibility. The Pro 5S has a magnetic charging connection, so its charging arrangement differs from the Pro 6’s USB-C setup.

Keeping the Pro 5S can avoid changing a working connection or replacing a charging accessory solely to accommodate the newer camera. Verify the exact base-station model and current firmware support before making a purchase or migration decision.

This can matter even if you are buying only one replacement camera. A camera that cannot use the connection your system relies on may require you to change the way it connects, rather than simply pairing it with the equipment already in place. Check the hub label and identify whether SecureLink is part of your current setup before ordering.

Don’t choose based on resolution alone

Both models are 2K HDR cameras with the same listed 160-degree diagonal field of view, color night vision, 12x digital zoom, spotlight, siren, and two-way audio. Those shared headline specifications do not establish that one will give you a wider view or a higher listed resolution than the other. The meaningful differences in the available specifications are installation, charging, compatibility, battery claims, and plan-dependent features.

If your main question is image resolution or field of view, the listed specifications do not give the Pro 6 an advantage over the Pro 5S. Instead, consider whether your current equipment will work, how you prefer to charge the camera, and whether you need premium recording or detection features. Those are the decision points that distinguish the two models on the published information.

Check compatibility before you buy

First identify whether you use a SmartHub or base station, and read the model number from the device label or its product information. Do not assume that a hub compatible with the Pro 5S will also work with the Pro 6.

Your setup What the listed support indicates What to do
SecureLink / Arlo Home Security connection Pro 5S supports SecureLink; Pro 6 does not Keep or choose the Pro 5S if SecureLink is required for your setup.
VMB4000 or VMB4500 base station Listed for Pro 5S; not listed among the Pro 6’s supported SmartHubs Do not assume the Pro 6 will pair with this base station. Confirm current compatibility before replacing a camera.
VMB4540 or VMB5000 SmartHub Listed for both models Check support for the exact camera SKU and your region, then confirm that your hub firmware is current.
No hub, direct Wi-Fi Both product FAQs state that the camera can connect directly to Wi-Fi without a hub Consider direct Wi-Fi if you do not need a hub-dependent arrangement or local-storage setup.

Arlo’s comparison page is the source for the Pro 6’s SecureLink limitation and the listed SmartHub models; its Pro 5S product page lists the Pro 5S base stations. Arlo’s Pro 6 FAQ and Pro 5S product FAQ describe direct Wi-Fi use. Compatibility can vary by SKU, firmware, and region, so use the support information for the specific items you own rather than relying on a general assumption about the product family.

Direct Wi-Fi means a hub is optional for connecting either camera; it does not mean every function associated with a hub is automatically available in the same way. A hub may be important to your local-storage arrangement, network setup, or existing SecureLink system. If you are considering removing a hub, make a separate list of what it currently does for you and verify those requirements against the camera and service features you plan to use.

For a mixed setup, check each camera and accessory rather than assuming that compatibility transfers across generations. In particular, the fact that a VMB4540 or VMB5000 is listed for both cameras does not erase the Pro 6’s SecureLink exclusion. Confirm the exact camera SKU and the hub model together, and check current firmware and region-specific support.

What the battery claims do—and don’t—tell you

Arlo’s support comparison, updated August 14, 2025, says the Pro 6 has “up to 15% more battery life” than the Pro 5S. “Up to” describes a manufacturer-stated maximum difference; it does not mean every owner will see that improvement. The comparison does not establish a measured runtime under a shared set of recording, alert, network, and environmental conditions.

Arlo lists 8 months of battery life for the Pro 5S on its product page. That figure is a manufacturer estimate, and the page does not establish it as a guaranteed charging interval for every installation. Motion frequency, settings, signal conditions, and use affect runtime; plan to check the camera’s battery status and charge it as needed rather than treating the listed figure as a service interval.

Accordingly, the battery claim can be a supporting reason to prefer the Pro 6, but it is not a sound substitute for the compatibility check. If the Pro 6 cannot use a required SecureLink connection or base station, the advertised battery improvement does not make it a compatible replacement.

Arlo Pro Wireless Security Camera 2K HDR (6th Gen) - 3-Cam
  • Reliable 2K Protection for Everyday Security: Monitor doors, yards, and entry points with this camera for home security. An outdoor camera with 2K HDR video, smart detection, and auto zoom with motion tracking in a simple wireless setup.
  • Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.

Battery life is best considered as an expectation, not a fixed calendar schedule. The published figures do not say how often a particular household will trigger motion events or what settings each owner will use. If reducing charging interruptions is a priority, the Pro 6’s stated improvement may weigh in its favor, but it cannot predict the interval for your camera or establish a guaranteed saving in charging time.

Charging, installation, and accessories

The Pro 6 uses USB-C charging and supports Bluetooth installation. The Pro 5S uses a magnetic charging connection. These are practical differences when deciding how you will install a camera, reach it for charging, or reuse accessories you already own.

  • For Pro 6: verify that any charging accessory explicitly lists compatibility with the Pro 6 or the relevant sixth-generation camera. Arlo confirms Pro 6 compatibility with its USB-C accessories, but that does not mean every older magnetic accessory will fit.
  • For Pro 5S: check that a magnetic cable, mount, or other accessory names the Pro 5S or its generation. Do not infer compatibility from appearance alone.
  • Before moving cameras: check the accessory’s model list and the camera’s connection type. The two charging arrangements are not interchangeable merely because both cameras are in the Pro line.

Arlo’s Pro 5 specification sheet, updated July 13, 2026, and its Pro 6 product information provide model-specific accessory details. Accessory compatibility should be checked item by item; the available information does not establish that every Pro 5S accessory works with the Pro 6.

Before buying an accessory, match its published model list to the exact camera generation. This applies to cables and mounts as well as charging equipment: a similar-looking connector or attachment is not proof that it will work. If you already own charging accessories for the Pro 5S, do not budget on reusing them with the Pro 6 unless Arlo lists the Pro 6 as compatible. Conversely, a Pro 6 USB-C accessory should not be assumed to serve the Pro 5S’s magnetic charging arrangement.

Bluetooth installation is another convenience rather than a reason to skip network checks. For a direct Wi-Fi installation, confirm that direct connection suits your intended arrangement; for a hub-based installation, confirm support for the particular hub. The product information establishes Bluetooth installation for Pro 6, but does not imply that the two cameras have identical installation steps or charging accessories.

Will you need an Arlo Secure subscription?

You can use basic live viewing and motion notifications without a paid plan, according to Arlo’s product FAQs. Those basic functions are not the same as an included cloud-recording service. Arlo says premium features—including video cloud storage, interactive notifications, and video object detection—require a paid subscription after the trial.

If your main requirement is to receive a basic alert and open a live view, a paid plan may not be necessary for that use. If you expect the camera to store clips in the cloud or provide premium detection and notification features, include the recurring plan cost in your ownership decision and check the current terms for your country. Prices, trial terms, feature bundles, and availability can vary by region and change over time; no single current price applies universally.

A hub may be relevant to local storage or the way your network is arranged, but direct Wi-Fi operation does not itself establish that cloud recording is free. Confirm the specific storage method and plan terms you intend to use before relying on recorded footage.

It helps to decide what you mean by “recording” before comparing the cameras. Live viewing lets you open a current view, and basic motion notifications can alert you to activity, but Arlo identifies cloud storage as a premium feature. If you need saved clips to review later, check the plan and storage terms rather than assuming that a camera’s ability to connect to Wi-Fi includes free cloud history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan terms are an ownership cost to check, not a fixed specification of either camera. Arlo’s pages describe a trial and premium features, but prices and what is available can vary by country and change over time. Check the current Arlo Secure details for your location, including which features are included and when a trial ends, before deciding whether the total cost fits your needs.

What could an upgrade cost beyond the camera?

The available product information does not establish a universal current price for either camera, a bundle price, or the price of a subscription. Sale offers, regional availability, bundles, and plan terms can change, so compare the current checkout price for the exact SKU rather than relying on an old listing. Consider the total ownership picture: the camera itself, any hub or network equipment you need, charging accessories you cannot reuse, and a paid plan if cloud storage or premium detection matters to you.

The Pro 6 does not require a hub for direct Wi-Fi use, according to Arlo’s product FAQ. That may let a new buyer avoid purchasing a hub if the intended setup does not need hub-dependent functions. It does not establish that every buyer can remove an existing hub without losing a local-storage arrangement or another role that hub serves. Likewise, upgrading from a Pro 5S may involve accessory costs if your current magnetic charging equipment is not compatible with the Pro 6’s USB-C setup.

Do not treat the Pro 6’s battery claim as a guaranteed cost reduction. Arlo states up to 15% more battery life than the Pro 5S, but the comparison is not an independent test and does not quantify how many charges a household will avoid. Make the purchase decision on the features and compatibility you can confirm, not on an assumed financial return from the battery estimate.

A practical buying decision

  1. Write down the connection you rely on. Identify the hub or base-station model and note whether your cameras use SecureLink.
  2. Match that setup to the camera. Pro 6 lists VMB5000 and VMB4540 SmartHubs and excludes SecureLink. Pro 5S lists VMB4000, VMB4500, VMB4540, and VMB5000, and supports SecureLink.
  3. Decide whether you need a hub. Both models can connect directly to Wi-Fi, according to their product FAQs. If you depend on a hub for local storage, a network arrangement, or SecureLink, check that role before switching.
  4. Choose the charging arrangement you can live with. Pro 6 uses USB-C and adds Bluetooth installation; Pro 5S uses magnetic charging. Check the model compatibility of accessories you plan to reuse.
  5. Set expectations for battery and recording. Treat Arlo’s Pro 6 battery comparison and Pro 5S 8-month listing as manufacturer claims or estimates, not guaranteed outcomes. Separately decide whether basic alerts and live view are enough or whether you need paid premium features.
  6. Confirm current regional details. Before checkout, verify the exact SKU, hub and firmware compatibility, subscription terms, and accessory support for your country. Product availability, bundles, and plan terms can change.

It can help to run this checklist in order rather than starting with the newer model. First, establish what your current hub or SecureLink connection requires. Next, decide whether you need a hub at all. Then compare USB-C with magnetic charging and check accessories. Finally, decide whether you need only basic live view and alerts or also want premium cloud and detection features. This sequence prevents a shared video specification—or a battery estimate—from distracting from a requirement that could rule a camera out.

Verdict

The Pro 6 is the sensible pick for buyers who want USB-C charging, Bluetooth installation, and Arlo’s stated battery improvement, provided they use a supported VMB5000/VMB4540 SmartHub or direct Wi-Fi. The Pro 5S is the safer choice for SecureLink users and owners of listed VMB4000 or VMB4500 base stations. Since their core video and security hardware specifications are shared, establish compatibility and the recording features you need before treating the newer model as an upgrade.

For current product details, see Arlo’s Pro 6 page, Pro 5S page, Pro camera comparison, and camera and video doorbell lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Arlo Pro 6 worth upgrading to from the Pro 5S?

It may be worth it if USB-C charging, Bluetooth installation, and Arlo’s stated battery improvement matter to you, and you use a supported VMB5000 or VMB4540 SmartHub or direct Wi-Fi. Both cameras share the listed 2K HDR video, 160-degree diagonal field of view, color night vision, spotlight, siren, and two-way audio. Keep the Pro 5S if you rely on SecureLink or a compatible VMB4000 or VMB4500 base station.

Will the Arlo Pro 6 work with my Arlo base station?

Arlo lists SmartHubs VMB5000 and VMB4540 for the Pro 6 and says it does not support SecureLink. Do not assume that a base station used with a Pro 5S will work with a Pro 6. Check the exact camera SKU, hub model, firmware, and regional support before buying. Both cameras can also connect directly to Wi-Fi without a hub, according to their product FAQs.

Do I need a hub to use either camera?

No. Arlo’s product FAQs say both the Pro 6 and Pro 5S can connect directly to Wi-Fi. A hub may still matter for a local-storage arrangement, network setup, or SecureLink system, so confirm what role your current hub serves before removing it or changing cameras.

Do I need an Arlo Secure subscription?

Arlo says basic live viewing and motion notifications remain available without a paid plan. Premium features such as cloud storage, interactive notifications, and video object detection require a paid subscription after the trial. Check the current plan terms for your country; prices, trials, feature bundles, and availability can change.

How much longer does the Pro 6 battery last?

Arlo states that the Pro 6 offers up to 15% more battery life than the Pro 5S. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result or a guaranteed improvement for every installation. Arlo’s Pro 5S product page lists 8 months of battery life as an estimate; actual runtime depends on settings and use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I reuse Pro 5S charging accessories with the Pro 6?

Do not assume so. The Pro 5S uses a magnetic charging connection, while the Pro 6 uses USB-C. Arlo confirms compatibility with its Pro 6 USB-C accessories, but check each accessory’s model list to confirm that it names the exact camera generation.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Pro 6 for USB-C charging, Bluetooth installation, and Arlo’s stated battery improvement if your setup uses a VMB5000 or VMB4540 SmartHub or direct Wi-Fi. Choose the Pro 5S if you rely on SecureLink or a listed VMB4000/VMB4500 base station. Their core video specifications are shared, so confirm compatibility and the plan features you need before upgrading.
