Yes—an Arlo camera can still be useful without a subscription. You can generally stream live video, receive motion alerts, and use two-way audio. What you should not assume is that an alert means a cloud clip was saved: Arlo says Video History is unavailable without a plan or trial. Some compatible cameras can record locally through a SmartHub or Base Station instead.
What still works after an Arlo trial or plan ends?
Arlo’s post-trial guidance lists live streaming, push notifications, two-way audio, auto zoom and tracking on supported devices, and local recording on supported devices as features that can remain available without a plan. Its broader list also includes motion alerts, doorbell calls, schedules and arrive/leave automations, and camera deterrents such as a spotlight, siren, or two-way audio. Availability varies by camera and region, so treat these as platform-level features, not a guarantee for every model.
Arlo says Video History and Activity Zones are unavailable without a plan or trial. That distinction matters: an alert can tell you that motion was detected, but it does not mean a retrievable cloud recording exists.

Can you view live video without paying?
Yes. Live streaming and push notifications are included in Arlo’s stated no-plan feature set. You can open the app to check a camera’s live view when an alert arrives, and supported cameras retain two-way audio. This approach is useful if you mainly want to check in as events happen and do not need to review saved footage later.

How can you save Arlo footage without cloud subscription charges?
The documented alternative is local storage using a compatible Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. Arlo says supported hubs can provide local storage and can be used as primary storage without Arlo Secure. Local recording depends on the exact camera and hub/base station combination; verify compatibility for both before buying equipment. What features may require a plan or a particular model?
Cloud history and Activity Zones
Arlo’s post-trial page says Video History and Activity Zones are unavailable without a plan or trial. If you need saved cloud clips or those detection controls, a no-plan setup may not meet your requirements.

Auto zoom and tracking
Auto zoom and tracking are not supported on every device. Arlo notes that Essential Pan Tilt Cameras are an exception: their Auto Track feature requires a trial or subscription. Confirm the feature status for your particular model rather than relying on the general no-plan list.

Local recording
Local recording also varies by device and setup. A SmartHub or Base Station does not make every Arlo camera compatible, so confirm the pairing before treating local storage as a subscription-free solution.
Do any Arlo cameras still get free cloud recording?
There is a regional and legacy exception in Arlo’s UK/EU support information: certain older models are listed with seven-day free cloud recording, up to 1080p, for a maximum of five cameras. The listed models are Pro 2, Pro, Q, Q+, Go, Baby, and Arlo Wire-Free (VMC3030). These terms are not a universal offer for current cameras or all countries; check the support information for your region and model.

Arlo says an account can support an unlimited number of cameras with or without Secure, but camera count and recording entitlement are separate issues. The number of cameras an account can include does not establish that each camera has cloud recording or local-storage support. Which no-subscription setup should you choose?
- Choose live alerts and viewing if you only need to be notified and check the live feed, and you do not need saved footage for later review.
- Investigate local storage if you need recordings without ongoing cloud charges. Confirm camera and hub/base station compatibility, plus the supported media, before purchasing.
- Check regional and model-specific cloud terms if you own an older camera or live outside the UK/EU. Legacy free recording rules should not be generalized to other models or countries.
- Consider a plan only if needed features justify it, such as cloud Video History or Activity Zones; verify the available tier and terms in your country.
