The best ARK weapon depends on what you are doing and how far your character has progressed. For a new survivor, carry a durable melee weapon and a bow. At the Smithy tier, add a crossbow for stronger attacks and tranquilizer bolts. The Longneck Rifle becomes the best deliberate single-target gun at level 35, the Pump-Action Shotgun is the close-range workhorse at level 55, and the Assault Rifle supplies sustained fire at level 58. Fabricated explosives, mounted weapons and Tek weapons are specialized end-game tools rather than universal upgrades.

This progression applies broadly to ARK: Survival Evolved and its remastered ARK: Survival Ascended. Exact engrams, damage, crafting costs and practical rankings can change with the map, mods, server rates, PvE or PvP rules, and balance updates, so use the recommendations as a decision framework rather than a permanent tier list.

What makes a weapon “best” in ARK?

ARK has no single weapon that dominates every situation. A weapon can be excellent for killing a wild creature and poor for taming it; a gun that is efficient in PvE can be too loud, expensive or slow for PvP. Before choosing, identify the job: immediate defense, hunting, knockout taming, cave clearing, base defense, siege, harvesting or a boss encounter.

The official ARK weapons classification runs from primitive melee weapons such as the Wooden Club, through bows and crossbows, firearms such as the Pump-Action Shotgun, propelled explosives such as the Rocket Launcher, and end-game Tek weapons. Most weapons deteriorate and need periodic repair. Ammunition is a separate progression: the engram for a weapon does not automatically teach its arrows, bolts, bullets, shells or rocket-propelled grenades.

ARK: Survival Evolved - PlayStation 4
  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
  • Damage and target: Single-shot precision, close-range burst, automatic fire and area damage solve different problems.
  • Range and accuracy: A long-range weapon keeps you safer, while spread weapons are forgiving in cramped caves.
  • Economy: Compare the cost of metal, gunpowder, cementing paste, polymer, explosives, shells and advanced bullets before committing.
  • Handling: Draw time, reload time, magazine size, scope behavior and durability matter as much as the damage number.
  • Purpose: A crossbow may be “best” for taming even when a rifle is stronger for killing.
  • Quality: A strong blueprint or loot drop can outperform a newly crafted primitive item, but it usually costs more to craft and repair.

There are no universal DPS percentages or one ranking that survives every unofficial server configuration. The staged recommendations below are designed to keep you alive while your ammunition, crafting stations and blueprints improve.

Quick progression table

End game Tek, rockets and mounted weapons Relevant Tekgrams or specialized structures Element or explosive ammunition Bosses, siege and encounter-specific roles Rare resources, map rules and progression requirements

Stage 1: first spawn and primitive survival

Carry a melee weapon before anything else

A spear or comparable primitive melee weapon is the first reliable defense. It lets you finish a wounded creature without spending an arrow and gives you a fallback when a bow breaks. Keep an eye on durability: fighting through several threats with a nearly broken weapon can leave you unarmed at the worst moment.

Use melee carefully rather than charging every creature. Back away, use terrain and avoid fighting groups until you understand their movement and reach. The Wooden Club is useful for primitive knockout attempts, but it is not a general replacement for a spear because its short reach makes it risky against aggressive targets.

Add a bow as soon as materials allow

Craft a bow when you have enough fiber, wood and thatch, then make a reserve of arrows. A bow gives you distance for basic hunting and lets you pull a single creature away from a group. It also introduces the ammunition discipline that continues through the entire game: carry more arrows than the immediate fight appears to require, because missed shots and unexpected spawns are normal.

  • Keep the melee weapon on your hotbar for creatures that reach you.
  • Use elevated rocks, water edges and narrow terrain to create distance, but do not assume every creature is blocked by the same obstacle.
  • Repair before leaving base when the weapon is below comfortable durability.
  • Store spare arrows separately from your emergency food and medical supplies so a death does not remove your entire ranged stock.

Stage 2: metal tools, crossbow and taming utility

Why the crossbow is the first major upgrade

Once you have a Smithy and metal-tier resources, move from the bow to a crossbow. It provides a stronger ranged attack and works naturally with tranquilizer bolts. This makes it one of the most useful weapons in the middle of a new survivor’s progression: the same item supports hunting, defense and knockout taming.

Crossbow bolts are not free. Learn and craft the appropriate ammunition engram separately, and bring enough normal arrows or bolts to handle non-taming fights so you do not waste tranquilizer ammunition. A crossbow is also a practical backup after you acquire firearms because it is quieter, inexpensive to maintain and useful when you need a knockout tool rather than lethal damage.

Pair it with a pike or sword

A pike or sword gives you dependable close-range defense at the same time that your ranged damage improves. Choose based on your resources and blueprint quality rather than assuming one is universally superior. A close weapon is especially valuable in caves, where a long reload or a blocked line of sight can turn a ranged advantage into a liability.

This stage is about utility, not a claim that the crossbow wins every damage comparison. Map spawns, creature armor, player armor and server multipliers can change the result. Its consistent value is the combination of range, taming compatibility and modest operating cost.

Stage 3: first firearms

Simple Pistol: an optional bridge at level 34

The Simple Pistol unlocks at level 34 and uses Simple Bullets. The official entry describes six shots before a reload and positions it for weak-to-mid-range opponents, particularly players without heavy armor. It can be useful when you need a firearm immediately, but it is not usually the best long-term investment for a survivor who is one level away from the Longneck Rifle.

Choose it when you already have the ammunition production to support it, when a server’s PvP conditions favor a quick sidearm, or when a loot drop gives you an unusually good-quality pistol. Otherwise, keep the crossbow and save resources for the rifle and its ammunition.

Plan ammunition before learning the engram

Every firearm creates a second requirement: a sustainable bullet supply. Gather the ingredients for Simple Bullets before you commit to extended gun use. A pistol that sits empty in a storage box is not a progression upgrade, and firing expensive ammunition at low-value targets can delay your next crafting station.

Stage 4: Longneck Rifle and tranquilizer work

Why the Longneck is the default precision recommendation

The Longneck Rifle unlocks at level 35, one level after the Simple Pistol. The official ARK entry describes it as having the highest damage per shot of any non-Tek gun. That makes it the strongest general recommendation for deliberate single targets, high-value hunting shots and situations where one accurate hit is preferable to a stream of bullets.

Use it when you can control the engagement: scout first, fire from cover, and let the rifle’s single-shot rhythm work for you. It is particularly effective for selecting one creature from a group or opening a fight before switching to a close-range weapon.

Understand the scope and dart limitation

A scope does not remove the rifle’s sway. Crouching or going prone can reduce movement, but scope sway remains part of the handling trade-off. More importantly, the scope is incompatible with tranquilizer darts. Attaching the scope changes the rifle’s ammunition behavior, so a scoped Longneck is not a universal hunting-and-taming configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When taming is the priority, carry a crossbow with tranquilizer bolts or use an unscoped Longneck configuration that supports tranquilizer darts. Keep a lethal weapon available for protection, because a taming target can attract predators while you are concentrating on its torpor.

When the rifle is not the right answer

The Longneck is a poor choice for emptying bullets into a fast swarm, fighting at point-blank range or handling a siege that demands splash damage. Its value is precision, not automatic suppression. A crossbow can also remain preferable when ammunition economy, quieter attacks or repeated knockout shots matter more than a high-damage opening hit.

Stage 5: fabricated close-range damage

Pump-Action Shotgun at level 55

The Pump-Action Shotgun unlocks at level 55 in the Fabricator. The official entry describes it as an upgrade that fires more shots between reloads, making it the close-range workhorse for a developed survivor. In caves, narrow corridors and fights where a target is already inside your safe distance, it can end an encounter faster than a single-shot rifle.

Shotgun performance depends on context. Spread can help against a nearby moving target, but it also sends pellets into walls or misses when you fire from too far away. Shells consume resources, and a reload at the wrong moment is dangerous. Carry enough ammunition for the entire cave run and keep a melee option ready for a creature that closes while the weapon is cycling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use it efficiently

  1. Enter with a reserve: Count shells for the planned route, then add a margin for unexpected creatures and return trips.
  2. Fight at effective range: Move close enough for the spread to connect, but do not let a high-health creature pin you against terrain.
  3. Reload behind cover: Use corners, elevation or a companion creature during the reload rather than standing in the open.
  4. Protect durability: Repair before a cave or boss preparation run; a broken shotgun is an expensive surprise.

Do not compare the Pump-Action and Longneck only by a single damage number. Their reload exposure, spread, shell production and intended range are different, so the better choice follows the encounter.

Stage 6: automatic fire and heavy options

Assault Rifle at level 58

The Assault Rifle unlocks at level 58 and uses Advanced Rifle Bullets. The official entry lists a 40-round magazine, a five-second full-magazine discharge and a 2.5-second reload. That combination makes it the sustained-fire choice when you can manufacture and carry enough advanced ammunition.

Automatic fire is useful for suppressing a player, finishing a large target or correcting for movement when a single shot is too easy to miss. It is also expensive: every trigger pull consumes ammunition, and prolonged firing increases repair demand. Establish bullet production before making the rifle your default weapon.

Assault Rifle versus the other fabricated choices

Weapon Choose it when Resource and handling trade-off
Longneck Rifle You need accurate, high-damage individual shots or a controlled hunting weapon. Slow single-shot rhythm and scope limitations; lower ammunition volume than automatic fire.
Pump-Action Shotgun The fight is close, confined or likely to be decided by a short burst. Shell cost, spread and reload exposure; range reduces its practical effectiveness.
Assault Rifle You need sustained fire and have a dependable Advanced Rifle Bullet supply. Large ammunition and repair burden; a 40-round magazine can be emptied in five seconds.

Mounted weapons such as ballista and catapult turrets, along with rocket-propelled weapons, belong in the heavy or siege category. They are valuable for base defense, structures and specific encounters, but their weight, setup time, ammunition and specialization make them poor everyday carry choices.

Stage 7: Tek and end-game specialization

Tek weapons are progression-gated

End-game Tek weapons require the relevant Tekgrams before you can use them. Other weapon categories do not carry that same Tekgram requirement. Tek access therefore depends on boss progression, the map, Element availability, server settings and your tribe’s role, not simply on reaching a character level.

Treat Tek weapons as role-specific tools. A Tek item may be ideal for a boss arena or a particular PvP defense while being wasteful for routine hunting. Element is a strategic resource, so confirm the encounter’s rules and your resupply plan before taking a Tek weapon into the field.

Explosives and rockets

Rocket launchers and other explosive weapons can change a siege or encounter, but they consume specialized ammunition and can damage structures, mounts or allies if used carelessly. Rocket Propelled Grenades belong to the advanced ammunition family, not to the same inexpensive supply chain as arrows or basic bullets. Reserve explosives for targets that justify the cost, and verify whether your PvE or PvP server permits the intended structure damage.

A balanced end-game carry

A practical late-game kit normally combines a reliable firearm, a close-range option, taming utility and only the explosive or Tek item required for the planned activity. For example, a Longneck can cover deliberate shots, a Pump-Action Shotgun can handle a cave rush, and a crossbow can preserve tranquilizer capability. Replace any component when the map, boss, tribe role or server rule makes a different specialization more valuable.

Weapon quality, blueprints and loot

“Primitive” is a starting quality, not a permanent definition of the best weapon. The official item-quality progression lists Primitive, Ramshackle, Apprentice, Journeyman, Mastercraft and Ascendant. Higher-quality weapons can cost substantially more materials than primitive versions, and their repair bills rise with the item quality and durability.

A loot-drop weapon or blueprint can therefore outperform a newly crafted primitive item even when the weapon name is identical. Evaluate the actual damage, durability, crafting cost and repair burden. A high-quality Pump-Action blueprint may be excellent for a cave team that can afford the materials, while a solo survivor may get more practical value from a cheaper weapon that can be replaced easily.

  • Prefer a lower-quality backup when: losing the item would strand you without a weapon for the next expedition.
  • Compare repair access: a powerful weapon at a remote outpost may be less useful than a modest weapon you can maintain.

Build the ammunition pipeline before the weapon loadout

ARK’s ammunition engrams are learned separately from weapon engrams. The ammunition family includes stones, arrows and bolts, advanced bullets and Rocket Propelled Grenades. A progression plan that lists only weapons is incomplete because every upgrade changes the ingredients, storage space and production time you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the intended activity: normal hunting, knockout taming, cave clearing, PvP defense or siege.
  2. Learn the matching ammunition engram: do not assume crafting the weapon unlocks its ammo.
  3. Calculate a reserve: include misses, reloads, additional creatures and the return journey.
  4. Separate lethal and non-lethal supplies: keep tranquilizer bolts or darts clearly labeled so they are not wasted in routine combat.
  5. Store materials for repairs: metal, hide and other station-specific ingredients can be as important as the ammunition itself.
  6. Carry a fallback: a crossbow, bow or melee weapon can keep you alive if bullets run out or a firearm breaks.

Choosing weapons for PvE, PvP, taming and caves

PvE and routine exploration

Favor reliability, ammunition economy and repairability. A crossbow remains useful for taming and quiet attacks, the Longneck handles deliberate high-value shots, and the Pump-Action Shotgun is a strong cave companion once shells are affordable. Automatic fire is convenient but often unnecessary for low-threat wildlife.

PvP

Player armor, line of sight, movement, reload exposure and server balance matter more than a generic tier list. The Simple Pistol can serve as a level-34 bridge against lightly armored players, while the Assault Rifle becomes attractive when advanced ammunition is abundant. Do not carry one expensive weapon without a backup; durability loss, a death drop or an empty magazine can remove your only answer.

Taming

Use the crossbow with tranquilizer bolts for a flexible mid-game knockout tool. The Longneck can support tranquilizer darts, but a scope cannot be used with those darts, so configure the rifle accordingly. Keep lethal weapons away from the target’s hitbox and monitor torpor rather than continuing to fire after the knockout threshold is reached.

Caves

Caves favor weapons that work in confined spaces. The Pump-Action Shotgun’s close-range burst is valuable, while a pike or sword protects you during reloads. A Longneck is still useful in a long chamber or at an entrance, but its single-shot handling is less forgiving when creatures surround you.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Buying the first gun and ignoring ammunition: Learn the bullet engram and establish production before replacing the crossbow.
  • Using a scoped Longneck for every task: Remove the scope or switch to a crossbow when tranquilizer ammunition is required.
  • Firing an Assault Rifle like a pistol: Short controlled bursts preserve advanced bullets and reduce unnecessary reloads.
  • Taking a shotgun too far away: Close the distance or switch to a rifle; spread is not a substitute for range.
  • Ignoring quality costs: Check blueprint crafting and repair requirements before committing to a high-tier item.
  • Entering a cave with one weapon: Carry a close-range option, spare ammunition, melee backup and repair materials.
  • Assuming the official progression is universal: Check your map, mod list, server rates and PvE/PvP rules before spending scarce resources.

Which ARK version does this guide cover?

This guide is written for the shared weapon progression found across ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended, while acknowledging that the two editions and their maps can diverge. The official wiki identifies Survival Ascended as the remastered version and records its 2023 releases for PC, Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5. Unofficial servers, mods, map-specific engrams and balance settings can alter unlocks, costs and practical performance, so confirm the in-game engram and ammunition descriptions on your server.

A practical loadout decision checklist

  1. What is the next activity? Select hunting, taming, cave, PvP, siege or boss preparation before selecting a weapon.
  2. What ammunition can you produce repeatedly? If the answer is only arrows or bolts, keep the crossbow or bow as your primary.
  3. What is your engagement range? Use the Longneck for controlled distance, the Pump-Action for close quarters and the Assault Rifle for sustained fire.
  4. Do you need knockout capability? Carry a crossbow or an appropriately configured Longneck; remember the scope restriction.
  5. Can you afford repairs and replacements? Compare quality, blueprint cost and station access, not just the damage displayed in the inventory.
  6. What is the fallback? Always retain a melee weapon and enough reserve ammunition to return safely.

In short, start with melee and a bow, transition to a crossbow for metal-tier survival and taming, choose the Longneck for precise single-target work at level 35, add the Pump-Action Shotgun at level 55 for close-range fights, and adopt the Assault Rifle at level 58 only when Advanced Rifle Bullets are sustainable. Tek weapons, rockets and mounted weapons should follow the encounter and your server’s progression rather than replace this practical core.
