When an ARK: Survival Evolved server will not start, cannot be found, or drops players, the cause is usually one of four things: an incompatible mod, a damaged save or installation, incorrect UDP ports, or a client/server version mismatch. Start with the server log, isolate mods, confirm the SteamCMD update completed, and then check the game, peer and query ports.
This guide covers dedicated servers run on your own PC or through a hosting provider. It applies to Survival Evolved; ARK: Survival Ascended uses different launch syntax and should not be configured from these instructions without checking its current documentation.

- Read the log before changing files. Look in
ShooterGame/Saved/Logs. On many rented hosts, the same folder is available through the provider’s file manager or FTP. - Remove recently changed mods. Start with every mod disabled, then restore them one at a time. A mod built for an older game build, or a mod that added an item later removed from the save, can prevent startup.
- Finish the game update. After a major patch, confirm SteamCMD completed its update and restart the server once. An apparent stall during the first load can clear after a clean restart.
- Check the network ports. The default game, peer and query ports must be reachable on the correct protocol.
- Match versions and browser filters. A server can be running normally but remain invisible because the client is on another build or the browser is hiding password-protected servers.
Change one thing at a time and keep a backup of the save before testing a mod or replacing files. That makes it possible to identify the change that fixed—or caused—the problem.
When the ARK server will not start
1. Find the first meaningful error in the log
Open the newest file in ShooterGame/Saved/Logs and search upward from the final error for the first message naming a mod, asset, map, save or missing file. The last line is often only a consequence of the original failure. If you use rented hosting, download the log through FTP or the host’s file browser; self-hosted installations expose the same directory on the server machine.

2. Isolate incompatible mods
Mods are the most common change-related startup trigger. A game patch can make an otherwise reliable extension incompatible, and a mod can leave a save referring to an item or class that no longer exists after the mod is removed or updated.
- Stop the server and copy the save folder to a separate backup location.
- Disable every nonessential mod in the server’s mod configuration.
- Start the server with the same map and settings.
- If it starts, re-enable one mod, restart, and watch the log. Continue until the failure returns.
- Update or remove the mod identified by that test. If the save depends on content from it, restore the backup before attempting further repairs.
Do not update every mod simultaneously while troubleshooting: you will lose the evidence needed to identify the culprit.

3. Check for a broken save
A save can become unloadable after a mod that supplied an item, structure or creature is removed. If the server starts with a new test save but not with the existing one, the installation and ports are probably not the immediate cause. Restore the latest known-good backup or return the required mod and obtain an update that supports the current game build.
4. Confirm the update finished
After a large patch, a console that appears to stop during initial loading may simply be processing files. Stop it once, verify that SteamCMD has finished downloading, and start again. Never assume that a launcher window closing means the dedicated-server update completed; check the SteamCMD output for completion before launching the server.
Repair or reinstall the dedicated-server files
Use SteamCMD when the log points to missing or corrupt server files, an update repeatedly fails, or a clean mod-free start still crashes. The dedicated-server application ID for ARK: Survival Evolved is 376030.

- Stop the server and back up
ShooterGame/Saved, configuration files and any custom scripts. - Open a terminal in the SteamCMD directory.
- Log in anonymously:
login anonymous. - Select the ARK server application and update it:
app_update 376030 validate. - Wait for SteamCMD to report completion, then use
quitand start the server.
The validate option checks the installed files and replaces damaged ones. It does not repair a corrupt save or make an incompatible mod compatible, so keep those causes separate during testing.

Verify the client installation separately
If only one player receives crashes or missing-file errors while others can join, use Steam’s built-in file-verification command for that player’s game installation. A client repair cannot fix a server-side save, port or mod problem; it is useful when the failure follows one PC rather than everyone connecting to the server.
Ports and firewall rules that ARK uses
Use the following defaults when configuring a self-hosted router, operating-system firewall or a host’s network panel. Confirm the values against the current ARK: Survival Evolved community wiki before changing production rules, because defaults can change with updates.

Forward the game and peer ports to the server’s local IP, and forward the query port if you expect browser listing or IP searches. A forum report says that forwarding UDP rather than both TCP and UDP solved one connection problem; that is anecdotal, not a universal rule. Older advice to disable forwarding conflicts with current network guidance, so test your own router and firewall rather than applying either rule blindly.
Keep the query port out of the 27020–27050 range, which Steam uses for other purposes. Assign a different, unused set of ports to each server on the same machine and reflect those values in the server’s launch configuration.

Why the server is missing from the browser
Check filters before assuming the server is offline
ARK advertises a server as password protected when an admin password is configured. In the in-game browser, a filter that hides password-protected servers also hides your server—even if players do not need a password to join. Clear that filter, choose the correct server type and map, and search again.
Match the client and server builds
The joining player’s game and the dedicated server must run the same version. Update both sides, completely restart the game and server, and search again. A newly updated server may take several minutes to appear in Steam’s master list; absence immediately after a restart is not proof of a failed boot.
Use a direct connection while discovery catches up
From the in-game console, use the direct-connect command with the server’s public address and game port:
open YOUR_PUBLIC_IP:7777Replace the address and port with your actual values. Direct connection bypasses a slow or incomplete browser listing, but it cannot bypass a blocked game port, an incorrect address or a version mismatch.
Players cannot connect even though the server is running
Confirm the address and port from outside the host network
Give remote players the public address, not the server PC’s private address (such as a local router address). Make sure the router forwards 7777 and 7778 UDP to the correct machine and that the operating-system firewall allows the same traffic. If the server is behind a second router or carrier-grade NAT, the forwarding rule may exist on the wrong device; check the network topology before changing ARK settings.

Separate browser failure from game-session failure
- Browser only: check the 27015 UDP query port, password-protected filter and listing delay.
- Direct connect only: the query path is the likely problem; game traffic may still be correctly forwarded.
- Neither browser nor direct connect: verify 7777/7778 UDP, the public address, firewall rules, server status and matching versions.
- One player only: have that player update and verify their client files, then test from another network if possible.
Restart after updates
Steam updates can leave a running process on the previous build. Stop the server cleanly, wait for the process to exit, start it again, and have clients restart the game before testing.
Lag, crashes and unstable performance
Test configuration before replacing hardware
Lag and crashes can result from configuration values that do not fit the server’s player and mod load, insufficient resources, or an unoptimised extension. Compare your configuration with settings recommended for a server of your size, then change only the setting under investigation so you can observe the effect.
Find a bad mod or plugin by elimination
- Record the time of a crash and the last log lines.
- Disable one suspected mod or plugin, leaving all other settings unchanged.
- Run the server long enough to reproduce the issue or to cover the period when it normally occurs.
- If stability returns, update, replace or remove that extension and test the save from a backup.
A mod that causes no startup error can still create runtime crashes or excessive load. Treat “the server starts” and “the server remains stable under play” as separate tests.

Use symptoms to narrow the cause
- Everyone experiences delayed actions: inspect configuration, server resources and the most recently changed mod.
- Crashes follow a particular item or structure: suspect the mod that supplies it and test a backup save.
- Crashes began immediately after a patch: finish the server update and check every mod for build compatibility before changing world data.
Fixing “App ID specified by server is invalid”
This Steam join message is associated in community reports with the Steam client’s join flow, not necessarily with an invalid SteamCMD installation or a stopped ARK server. Reports also describe the same message for other games, so treat it as a client-side join-path problem until direct tests prove otherwise. No official Studio Wildcard or Valve fix was identified, and the following workarounds are unverified.
Try Steam’s Game Servers favourites
- Open Steam’s View menu and choose Game Servers.
- Add the server’s public address and query/game port to favourites.
- Join it from that list instead of the in-game browser.
The exact Steam interface can change between client versions. If the server is not reachable from Game Servers either, return to the port and version checks rather than repeating the workaround.

Try a Steam run link
Some users report joining with a link in this form:
steam://run/346110//+connect ADDRESS:PORT/Replace ADDRESS:PORT with the server address and game port. This is a reported workaround, not an officially supported repair; Steam updates may change whether it works.

Choose based on the failure you are prepared to own: self-hosting offers maximum control but makes router and firewall diagnosis part of every incident, while rented hosting reduces network work but may limit access to files and launch parameters.
ARK: Survival Evolved versus Survival Ascended port syntax
ARK: Survival Ascended is a different game. Its launch syntax uses -port=<port>; otherwise it defaults to 7777. Do not copy that syntax into a Survival Evolved setup without checking the current instructions for your edition. A server can appear healthy while ignoring an option written for the other game.
A compact recovery checklist
- Back up
ShooterGame/Savedand configuration files. - Read the newest log and identify the first meaningful error.
- Disable all mods; restore them individually.
- Test a new save to distinguish save corruption from installation failure.
- Run SteamCMD
app_update 376030 validateand wait for completion. - Verify the player’s client files if only one client fails.
- Check 7777 UDP, 7778 UDP and 27015 UDP; add 27020 TCP only for RCON.
- Clear the password-protected-server filter and allow several minutes for listing.
- Try
open PUBLIC_IP:7777to bypass browser discovery. - For the invalid-App-ID message, test Game Servers favourites or the reported Steam run link, recognizing that neither is an official fix.
When a change restores service, write down the working mod set, build number and port mapping. That record turns the next patch or migration into a controlled comparison instead of another blind restart.
