If ARK: Survival Evolved is not giving XP, first confirm who should receive it and whether that survivor or creature has reached its applicable level cap. Then test a documented XP action while dismounted, inspect the XP multipliers for your game mode, try an Explorer Note, and update the client and server. This order separates a real configuration or patch problem from XP being credited somewhere else.
Start by identifying the XP recipient
The most common reason an XP bar appears frozen is that you are watching the wrong character or creature. ARK can award experience to a survivor, a ridden or nearby tame, a tribe member, or another eligible recipient depending on the action and circumstances. Before changing any settings, decide exactly which bar is supposed to move.

Level caps can look exactly like a broken XP system
A survivor or tame that has reached its applicable level cap will not continue accumulating XP. The official ARK experience documentation specifically notes that maximum-level creatures and Meks do not gain passive XP. Changing a multiplier cannot make a capped creature’s bar advance. If the creature is at its limit, the correct result is no further passive progress.
Check the displayed level and the remaining XP requirement before diagnosing a server fault. For a survivor, dismount and earn a small amount of direct XP. For a tame, inspect that tame rather than assuming the rider’s bar represents it. If another eligible recipient gains the award, the original activity may be working normally.

Run a controlled XP test before editing anything
Use an action whose XP behavior is documented and easy to repeat. This removes combat variables, tribe-sharing confusion, and uncertainty about whether the original activity grants experience.
- Dismount. Stand on foot so the test unambiguously targets your survivor.
- Record the current bar. Note the survivor’s level and the approximate XP remaining to the next level.
- Harvest a nearby resource. Harvesting is a listed survivor XP source. Use one small, repeatable node rather than a large gathering run.
- Craft a simple item. Crafting is also a documented XP source. Choose an inexpensive recipe so the test does not consume valuable materials.
- Wait for the notification and bar update. Give the game a moment to display the award, then check the exact survivor you recorded.
If the bar moves, the XP system is functioning and the original activity, recipient, or mount state explains the apparent failure. If neither action produces progress, continue with the configuration and build checks below. Do not use a large multiplier or a rare item as your first test: a small controlled award makes a missing or misdirected gain easier to see.
Check XP multipliers and game mode
ARK calculates experience through a global multiplier and, depending on the configuration, more specific multipliers. The setting named XPMultiplier defaults to 1.0. The documented default means the same experience amounts used in single-player and official public servers. Values below 1.0 reduce gains; a value of 0 or a conflicting custom configuration can make gains appear absent.

The global multiplier scales experience for players, tribes, and tames. GenericXPMultiplier and action-specific multipliers can then alter particular categories of activity. A harvesting test can therefore behave differently from a kill or crafting test when a server administrator has customized one category.

Why a multiplier change may not fix the problem
A higher rate cannot bypass a level cap, move XP from a tame to a survivor, or repair a historical server bug. It also cannot correct a setting that was changed in a different profile or server instance. After changing a value, save or apply the configuration, restart the affected session when required by the host, and repeat the same harvesting or crafting test. Compare the result with the exact value now loaded, not merely the value you intended to enter.
Do not assume that every platform exposes identical Host/Local menus. The location and names of Basic and Advanced controls can differ, so identify the platform and game mode before giving someone a menu path. On a dedicated server, only the active server configuration matters; changing a local single-player slider will not alter that server.

Use an Explorer Note as a deliberate diagnostic
Explorer Notes provide a large XP award and a temporary experience multiplier. Documented note boosts are 2x or 4x; two different boosts can stack to 8x. Treat the note as a test instrument, not just a leveling shortcut.
- Collect one Explorer Note while watching the correct survivor.
- Confirm that the visible multiplier timer appears and that it shows the expected boost.
- Immediately dismount if you were riding and repeat the same harvest or craft action used in the controlled test.
- Check whether the survivor bar changes during the timer. Record whether the note itself awarded XP, whether the follow-up action did, or whether neither occurred.
If the note appears but the follow-up action still produces no survivor XP, the result points away from an ordinary low-rate setting and toward a cap, recipient mismatch, configuration conflict, or outdated build. A note does not make a capped creature gain passive XP, and its temporary multiplier does not change which character receives an award.
Update the client and server before changing saves
XP behavior has changed across ARK patches, so record your platform, map, single-player/official/unofficial status, server type, current level, and whether the missing XP affects a survivor or a tame. This information is essential when the same symptom has different causes on different builds.

The ARK changelog documents a mounted XP-reset issue fixed in patch 171.6. The documented workaround and validation step is to dismount and earn survivor XP directly. A later entry, patch 172.3, added 50% of mount XP to the human character. These are historical build changes, not settings you can reproduce with a slider. If your client or server is older than the build that contains the relevant fix, update both sides where applicable and retest.
- Close the game and identify the installed client version.
- For an unofficial or dedicated server, ask the administrator for the server build and update status.
- Update the client and server through the platform’s normal update process.
- Reconnect or relaunch the single-player/host session.
- Repeat the dismounted harvest or craft test and compare the result with the pre-update record.
Do not delete or alter a save to test an XP complaint until the build and configuration have been recorded. A save change can remove evidence and cannot repair a server-side calculation that is still running an outdated build.
Fixes by symptom
“My survivor is not gaining XP”
- Dismount and perform one harvest followed by one simple craft.
- Confirm the survivor is below its level cap and that the bar you are watching belongs to the active character.
- Inspect the relevant global and action-specific multipliers for the current environment.
- Test an Explorer Note and watch for its timer.
- Update the client and server if the build is old, then repeat the same test.
“My tame is not getting XP”
- Check the tame’s level and eligibility for passive XP. Maximum-level creatures and Meks do not gain passive XP.
- Determine whether the action is awarding the rider, the tame, a tribe member, or another eligible recipient.
- Compare the tame’s state before and after a controlled action rather than relying on the survivor’s bar.
- Review tame-related and global multipliers on an unofficial or hosted server.
“The XP bar does not move after I dismount”
- Make sure the dismounted action is one of the documented survivor XP sources: harvesting or crafting are the simplest choices.
- Allow time for the notification and bar to refresh.
- Check for a cap and a zero or reduced multiplier.
- If the issue began while mounted, verify that the client and server include the mounted-XP fixes associated with patches 171.6 and 172.3.
“An Explorer Note gave no XP”
- Confirm that the note was collected by the intended survivor, not another player.
- Look for the temporary 2x or 4x timer before judging the result.
- Perform a direct harvest or craft while the timer is active; the note’s boost is temporary.
- If two different boosts are active, the documented combined multiplier can reach 8x, but it still cannot bypass a cap or redirect an award to a different recipient.
Single-player, host/local, and dedicated-server differences
Single-player and host/local sessions
Open the Host/Local Settings screen and inspect both Basic and Advanced sections. Confirm the XP controls before starting or restarting the session, because a value shown in a menu is useful only if it is applied to the active game mode. If the menu on your platform does not match a guide written for another platform, use the setting’s function rather than copying a label word for word.

Dedicated unofficial servers
Ask the administrator to inspect the active configuration, not a template file or an unused profile. The minimum useful check includes XPMultiplier=1.0 as the baseline, GenericXPMultiplier, and any action-specific XP entries. A restart may be required for edits to load. Afterward, run the same dismounted test so the administrator can compare before-and-after results.
Official servers
Players cannot normally repair official-server rates by changing local files. Establish whether the problem is a cap, recipient issue, or old client/server build, then report the reproducible test with the server and platform details. A historical announcement of permanent double harvesting, experience, and taming rates was made by Studio Wildcard in 2016; that announcement should not be treated as proof that every current server or mode uses a permanent 2x rate.

A useful report describes a repeatable result instead of only saying “XP is broken.” Include:
- Platform and game edition.
- Map name.
- Single-player, host/local, official, or unofficial status.
- Dedicated-server status and server build, when applicable.
- Survivor or tame, its current level, and whether it is ridden.
- The exact action tested, such as harvesting one resource or crafting one item.
- The configured values for
XPMultiplier,GenericXPMultiplier, and any relevant action-specific multiplier. - Whether an Explorer Note timer appeared and which multiplier it displayed.
- Client and server versions, plus whether the result changed after updating.
This record distinguishes a capped creature from a missing award, a local menu mistake from a dedicated-server setting, and a current defect from a behavior already addressed in the patch history.
Decision checklist
- Identify the intended recipient: survivor, ridden tame, unridden tame, or tribe member.
- Check the current level and rule out a maximum-level creature or Mek.
- Dismount and test one harvest and one simple craft.
- Inspect the correct Basic/Advanced or server configuration values.
- Collect an Explorer Note, verify its 2x or 4x timer, and repeat the direct test.
- Update client and server, especially when the symptom involves mounted XP.
- Record platform, mode, map, build, level, recipient, action, and settings before reporting the issue.
Following these checks tells you whether ARK is withholding XP, awarding it to someone else, applying a configured rate, or correctly stopping at a level cap. Only the last case is expected behavior; the other cases point to a recipient mistake, configuration problem, or build-specific issue that can be investigated with the recorded test.
