Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The safest opening in ARK: Survival Evolved is deliberately slow: spawn on a southern beach, stay out of deep water, hand-gather basic materials, craft a stone pickaxe followed by a hatchet, place a bed, and build a small thatch shelter before exploring. Put early stat points into food, health, and weight, then work toward your first tame at about level 20. Check that you are playing Evolved, not the separate remaster Survival Ascended, because maps, balance, interfaces, and advice can differ by version.
Confirm which ARK you are playing
ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are separate releases. A guide written for one may describe a different map, creature balance, menu layout, or progression experience. Before following any level, spawn, or taming advice, check the game title in your launcher and the map selected on your server. The guidance below targets the original Survival Evolved; exact behavior can vary with map, server settings, mods, and later updates.

ARK Survival Evolved Definitive Complete Guide & Walkthrough (Latest Update 2025) All Strategies,... | $15.99 | Buy on Amazon |
For a first attempt, use a forgiving single-player or beginner-friendly server if you can. Official and unofficial servers may change gathering rates, taming speed, player damage, and death penalties. The priorities remain the same, but a boosted server can make a creature appear to tame much faster than the default experience.
Where to spawn and what to do in the first 15 minutes
Choose a southern beach spawn when the map offers one. Several beginner guides identify the southern coast as a comparatively manageable starting area: it usually has accessible stone, trees, and shoreline resources, with fewer immediate predators than more dangerous regions. Stay near the starting area while you gain a few levels and learn the controls. Moving inland too soon can put a new survivor beside threats that are difficult to outrun or fight.
#1 Best Overall
- Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
- Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
- Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
- Look around before moving. Turn the camera and identify a beach, nearby trees, loose stones, and a route back to open ground. Do not run toward an attractive structure or unknown animal until you know where you will retreat.
- Keep to shallow water and land. Deep water is deceptively dangerous for a new character. Stay on the beach or in water you can immediately leave; postpone swimming, diving, and shoreline exploration until you have equipment and a way to recover from a death.
- Pick up a loose stone. Hand-gathering gives you the first material for primitive tools. Continue collecting nearby stones rather than walking long distances for a larger deposit.
- Gather wood and thatch by hand. Punch trees and collect fallen wood to obtain the materials needed for early crafting. Watch your health while punching trees and stop once you have enough for the first tools and a shelter.
- Craft the stone pickaxe first. The pickaxe is the early gateway to flint, which is used for primitive weapons and armor. Make it before spending time on exploration or combat.
- Craft a stone hatchet next. The hatchet gives you a better way to collect wood and other basic materials. Having both tools is more useful than carrying a large stack of one resource.
- Collect enough material for a bed and shelter. Your first goal is not a large base. Gather only what you need to create a reliable respawn point and a small enclosed hut.
- Place the bed before nightfall. A simple bed gives you a known respawn location if a predator, fall, hunger, or another mistake kills you. Put it inside the shelter or in a protected spot you can find again.
If you see an aggressive creature near your intended building site, move along the beach rather than trying to defeat it with bare hands. A short relocation is cheaper than losing your inventory and having to start again.
Build a first-night shelter that is easy to replace
Use thatch for the emergency hut
Gather thatch and build a compact thatch shelter as soon as you can. The purpose of this first hut is protection, storage, and a visible landmark, not permanence. A tiny room with a door, a bed, and enough space to stand safely is sufficient for the first night. Build it on relatively flat ground so pieces snap cleanly and you can expand or replace them later.
Choose the site carefully
- Stay near water without being in danger. A shoreline makes orientation and resource gathering easier, but do not place the hut where a creature can walk straight through your work area or where a tide, cliff, or deep channel traps you.
- Prefer shade and open visibility. A shady spot near water is a practical early location. Clear sight lines let you notice roaming threats before they reach the door.
- Leave an escape route. Do not build against a cliff, dense rocks, or a narrow ravine. If something attacks, you need room to run rather than a dead end.
- Keep the bed accessible. Place it where you can interact with it quickly after a death. Put storage and crafting space beside it, not outside in an exposed area.
Upgrade to wood when your routine is stable
Thatch is a short-term solution. Once you can gather materials without repeatedly dying, replace the most exposed parts with wood. A wooden hut is a better base for storage and crafting, but upgrading every piece immediately can delay tools, food, and protection. Replace the structure in stages and keep the bed usable throughout the rebuild.
Spend early levels and organize your inventory
Early stat points are most forgiving when invested in food, health, and weight. Food helps you avoid starving during gathering, health gives you a larger margin against falls and attacks, and weight lets you carry enough stone, wood, thatch, and tools to make each trip worthwhile. Your ideal allocation depends on server settings and play style, so treat these as priorities rather than a rigid level-by-level build.

Keep your inventory readable. Put tools in predictable hotbar slots, separate building materials from food, and avoid carrying every item you own when you explore. If you die, a small working kit is easier to replace than a single overloaded inventory. Return excess materials to the shelter before scouting a new area.
Unlock and craft practical survival equipment before decorative or specialized items. Primitive tools, a bed, a thatch structure, storage, and basic protection solve immediate problems; advanced crafting can wait until you can reliably return home.
Survive the first night
Night makes navigation and threat detection harder. You do not need to force an expedition after dark. Use the first night to sort materials, repair or replace tools, craft shelter pieces, and learn the inventory and crafting screens.
- Stay inside when visibility is poor. A hostile creature can be difficult to identify until it is already attacking.
- Keep food and water plans simple. Carry enough provisions for a short trip, but do not leave your entire stock in a character inventory that could be lost.
- Watch your surroundings before opening the door. Predators can wander into a base area while you are crafting.
- Use the bed as an anchor. If you die, respawn there rather than choosing a distant random location and losing your route home.
- Do not chase distant lights or structures. Unknown areas can contain stronger creatures and terrain hazards. Mark them mentally and investigate after daylight.
On the next morning, make a short loop around the base rather than a long journey. This confirms which resources respawn nearby and reveals whether your site is exposed to regular creature traffic.

Recognize and avoid early threats
Deep water
Deep water is one of the most common traps for new survivors. The surface can look calm while dangerous creatures are below, and swimming limits your ability to escape. Remain in shallow water during the opening phase. Build confidence on land before attempting aquatic resources or crossings.
Roaming predators
Low-level areas are not risk-free. Aggressive Spinos can appear around areas that otherwise look suitable for beginners. Scan the shoreline and the tree line before gathering, and keep a clear path back to your hut. If a large predator appears, retreat early; primitive weapons and an unfinished base are poor reasons to stand and fight.

Falls, getting wedged between rocks, and becoming lost can be as damaging as a creature attack. Avoid cliffs while overburdened, do not sprint into dense terrain without an exit, and return to the shelter whenever your health, food, or inventory becomes uncertain.
When and how to attempt your first tame
Many beginner guides place a practical first taming attempt at about level 20. Use that as a milestone, not a guarantee: server rates, settings, map, and creature availability can change the experience. Before attempting a tame, make sure you can replace your tools, protect an unconscious creature, and carry the food it needs.

The basic taming sequence
- Select a low-level target in a controlled area. Smaller, non-aggressive creatures are easier to monitor and reduce the chance that a second predator ruins the attempt.
- Separate it from hazards. Move away from deep water, cliffs, and roaming predators. If the target flees, you want a predictable direction rather than a chase into danger.
- Knock it unconscious with tranquilizing ammunition. Taming advice commonly describes tranq arrows or darts for this stage. Use the least force necessary; an unconscious creature can die if you keep attacking it.
- Put its preferred food in its inventory. The creature must remain unconscious while it eats. Food choice and the time required vary by species and server settings.
- Guard the area. Watch the creature’s health and the surrounding terrain. A predator can kill the target, and your own death can leave the tame unprotected.
- Wait and monitor rather than wandering away. Stay close enough to respond, but do not create extra danger by repeatedly colliding with the creature or attracting enemies.
Taming is a commitment of time and resources. If the area becomes unsafe, abandon the attempt and return with better preparation; losing one target is less costly than losing your bed, tools, and all gathered materials.
Choosing a first creature: safety, mobility, or ambition
There is no universally agreed “best” first tame. Beginner guides recommend different creatures because they optimize different goals. Treat these recommendations as opinions, and choose according to the role you need rather than a claimed universal ranking.
Recommended Free Tools
| Choice or approach | Why a beginner might choose it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Small, low-level, non-aggressive creature | Lower risk while you learn knocking out, feeding, and guarding a tame. | Limited combat or travel value; it is a practice tame, not necessarily a long-term partner. |
| Trike | Suggested by one set of beginner advice as a useful early tame with a clear progression goal. | Getting it unconscious and keeping the area safe still requires preparation; exact difficulty varies by settings. |
| “Carnaby” recommendation | One guide names Carnaby as a first-tame option. | This is an individual recommendation rather than a broad consensus; verify the creature and map context in your version. |
| Pteranodon | Mobility is the main appeal. Flight can change how you scout and travel. | A mobility-first choice can be harder to protect and may demand resources you do not yet have. |
| Giganotosaurus | Appeals to players seeking a powerful long-term creature. | Beginner guidance rates it as demanding; it is not a sensible first target for learning the taming process. |
| Managarmr | One guide rates it highly for beginners because of its movement and utility. | Availability, region, and acquisition difficulty make this opinion unsuitable as a universal starting plan. |
For most new survivors, the safest sequence is to practice on a small, calm target, establish a bed and wooden base, and then pursue a creature chosen for a specific need such as harvesting, defense, or mobility.

Session two: stabilize the beach base
- Replace the most vulnerable thatch pieces with wood.
- Keep the bed in place and add storage so valuable materials are not carried everywhere.
- Make spare primitive tools before leaving the base.
- Walk a short loop to identify safe gathering routes and predator paths.
Session three: expand your operating range
Once you can return safely, extend trips one landmark at a time. Bring only the equipment required for the objective, and return when your weight or health becomes a liability. This slow pacing is intentional: learning the mechanics and preserving a respawn point is more valuable than reaching a dangerous zone early.

Prepare before entering hardcore regions
Guides consistently advise saving the game’s hardest areas for later. A stronger shelter, spare tools, a reliable food supply, and at least one useful tame give you recovery options that a fresh character lacks. Mark the route home before you test a new biome or deep-water location.
Common first-session mistakes and fixes
“I ran inland and died immediately.”
Return to a southern beach spawn and remain near the start while you gain several levels. Use short scouting loops and keep the bed as your recovery point instead of treating the first spawn as a race to the interior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I have wood but cannot make early weapons.”
Craft the stone pickaxe before the hatchet. The pickaxe helps obtain flint, a key early material for primitive weapons and armor. If you skipped it, gather stone and flint near the beach and rebuild the tool sequence.
“I died and lost everything.”
Place a bed as soon as possible and store surplus materials. On the next life, make a small replacement kit rather than attempting to recover a full inventory through a dangerous area. A second bed at a later outpost can shorten future recovery trips.
“My shelter feels unsafe.”
Move it a short distance if predators patrol the site, if the entrance faces a cliff, or if you cannot see the approach. Keep the first hut cheap enough to abandon and rebuild; do not defend a bad location simply because you already spent thatch on it.
“My first tame failed.”
Choose a lower-level, non-aggressive creature, clear nearby threats, and wait until about level 20 before trying again. Knock the target unconscious carefully, feed its preferred food, and remain nearby. A failed attempt usually indicates a preparation or location problem, not that taming is impossible.
First-session checklist
- Confirm the title is ARK: Survival Evolved, not Survival Ascended.
- Spawn on a southern beach when available.
- Stay near the starting area and avoid deep water.
- Pick up stones; punch trees and gather fallen wood.
- Craft a stone pickaxe, then a stone hatchet.
- Collect flint for primitive weapons and armor.
- Spend early points on food, health, and weight.
- Build a thatch hut in a shady, visible spot near—but not in—dangerous water.
- Place a bed before nightfall.
- Upgrade the hut to wood when your resource loop is reliable.
- Delay taming until roughly level 20, then start with a manageable target.
- Scan for Spinos and other roaming threats before every gathering trip.
Following this order gives you the essentials that matter most: a predictable spawn, basic tools, a shelter you can replace, and enough breathing room to learn taming without risking every item you own. Explore farther only after those foundations are working.
