Short answer: there is no single, official RAM minimum for a dedicated ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) server. Memory use changes with the map, player count, server age, settings and mods. The ARK Official Community Wiki recommends four logical CPU cores per server instance and emphasizes strong single-thread performance, while estimating about 11 GiB for the server installation itself. Those figures are different from Steam’s client requirements of 16 GB RAM minimum, 32 GB recommended, 180 GB of available storage and an SSD. A private three-player server on The Island can therefore be modest, but its exact hardware requirement depends on the workload you actually run.

Client requirements are not dedicated-server requirements

Steam’s ASA listing describes the computer that runs the game client. It lists Windows 10 or 11, specific CPU and graphics requirements, DirectX 12, broadband internet, an SSD, 16 GB of system memory minimum, 32 GB recommended and 180 GB of available storage. Those values describe rendering and running the game for a player. They do not establish a minimum specification for a headless dedicated server.

A dedicated server performs different work. It keeps the world simulation authoritative, processes player actions, manages creatures and structures, writes saves and loads mods, but it does not render the game scene. Reusing the client’s 16 GB or 32 GB figures as a server rule can produce either an unnecessarily expensive machine or a host that runs out of memory under a larger map or mod set.

How much RAM does an ASA dedicated server need?

The defensible answer is workload-dependent rather than a number per player. The community-maintained server reference identifies five major variables:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Map: different maps can have different memory footprints.
  • Connected players: more simultaneous activity increases simulation and state that must be held in memory.
  • Server age: accumulated structures, tamed creatures, dropped items and storage containers can increase the world’s working set.
  • Configuration: rates, world settings and other server options alter simulation activity.
  • Mods: mod code and assets can add memory use, and combinations of mods may behave differently from a clean installation.

Because those variables interact, the available evidence does not support a universal “X GB per player” formula, a guaranteed minimum or a tested capacity table. Treat the 16 GB and 32 GB Steam figures as client numbers only.

A practical way to size memory

  1. Define the workload. Write down the map, expected peak concurrent players, planned mods, rates and whether the world will run continuously.
  2. Reserve room for the host. A machine running Windows and other services needs memory outside the server process. Do not assign all installed RAM to ASA.
  3. Measure peaks, not just startup. Watch committed memory and operating-system paging while several players explore, build and travel between areas. Startup usage is not a capacity test.
  4. Test the oldest realistic save. A fresh world can use less memory than a long-lived one containing extensive bases, creatures and inventories.
  5. Increase headroom when adding content. New maps, larger populations or heavy mod collections should trigger another capacity check rather than reliance on an old measurement.

If the host begins paging to disk, players may see pauses and the server can become unstable. Closing unrelated services, reducing the mod set or moving the instance to a machine with more memory are safer remedies than treating the client recommendation as a guarantee.

CPU: four logical cores, with single-thread speed first

The ASA server guidance calls for four logical cores per server instance, but explicitly presents this as a recommendation rather than a strict requirement. The reason is how the game simulation is organized: gameplay work largely runs on one thread, while physics is an important exception. A processor with many slow cores is therefore not automatically better than one with fewer, faster cores.

What to prioritize

  • Strong per-core performance: the main simulation thread benefits from fast single-thread execution.
  • At least the recommended logical-core capacity: four logical cores per instance gives the server room for its main work and supporting threads, but it is not a promise of a particular player count.
  • Sustained clocks and cooling: a CPU that throttles under continuous load can perform worse than its headline specification suggests.
  • Isolation from other workloads: backups, web panels, databases or another game server competing for the same cores can cause tick-time spikes.

Running multiple ASA instances changes the calculation. Each instance needs its own simulation capacity, and the host must also handle operating-system and maintenance tasks. Add instances only after checking CPU utilization and simulation latency under simultaneous activity; do not multiply the four-core guidance into a guaranteed total without testing.

Storage, operating system and network requirements

Storage capacity

The cited setup guidance estimates approximately 11 GiB for one ASA server installation. That is an installation footprint, not the amount of disk space a long-running server needs. Save files, player and tribe profiles, logs, patches and mod downloads all consume additional space. Keep free capacity for updates and temporary files so an otherwise healthy server does not fail while writing a save.

Steam’s 180 GB requirement belongs to the graphical client and should not be added to the 11 GiB server estimate as though both measure the same installation. A dedicated host still benefits from fast storage because world loading, saves and logging involve disk I/O; an SSD is mandatory in the Steam client listing, while the server reference’s key point is to budget for ongoing data rather than only the initial install.

Supported host environment

The dedicated-server setup reference describes a 64-bit operating system and a Windows or Windows-like environment. It does not describe native Linux support. If you are considering a virtual machine, compatibility layer or other Windows-like arrangement, validate that arrangement against the current server software and licensing terms before committing hardware or a migration plan.

Internet connection and latency

A private server needs reliable broadband and an upload path that can sustain the connected players and world traffic. The best location is usually geographically close to the group, but the practical test is latency and stability from each player’s home connection. Measure during busy periods; a fast download rate does not compensate for packet loss, unstable routing or a host that sleeps or changes address.

Self-hosting checklist

Self-hosting gives you control over the machine, files and maintenance. Use this checklist before inviting players:

  • 64-bit Windows or a compatible Windows-like environment that the current server software supports.
  • CPU with strong single-thread performance and the recommended four logical cores available to each instance.
  • Enough RAM for the selected map, peak players, world age, configuration and mods, with headroom for the operating system.
  • Fast storage with space beyond the approximately 11 GiB installation for saves, profiles, logs, updates and mods.
  • Stable broadband, a reachable network path and a plan for firewall and port configuration.
  • Automated or regularly verified backups stored separately from the live world.
  • Monitoring for memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk fullness, save failures and crash loops.

Operational routine

  1. Install the server files on the supported 64-bit host and keep the installation separate from backup storage.
  2. Create the world and configuration with the intended map, rates and mod list before measuring resource use.
  3. Start with a small test group and observe memory, CPU, disk and network behavior during travel, building and combat.
  4. Schedule restarts and backups around the group’s play pattern. Confirm that a backup can actually be restored before relying on it.
  5. After every major game or mod update, recheck startup, save completion and resource peaks.

Managed hosting versus running your own machine

A managed host can remove much of the operating-system, network and update work, while self-hosting can provide deeper control over files, schedules and hardware. Neither option is automatically faster or cheaper. Compare the service to your actual workload rather than choosing by advertised player slots alone.

Decision axis Questions for a managed service Questions for self-hosting
Instances and maps Can it run the number of maps or instances you need, and can you move between them? Does your machine have CPU, RAM and storage headroom for each instance?
Memory and CPU Is RAM dedicated or shared, and what CPU performance is included? Can you measure peak memory and main-thread load on your hardware?
Mods Are the required mods supported, updated and recoverable after an update? Can you control load order, files and rollback procedures?
Saves and backups How often are backups made, where are they stored and how are restores requested? Can you automate and test backups independently of the live disk?
Location and latency Is there a region near the players, and can you change regions later? Is your home or data-center connection stable for every player?
Maintenance Who handles updates, crashes, firewall rules and hardware failures? You handle patching, monitoring, security, replacements and recovery.
Total cost What is the recurring price for the required RAM, CPU, storage, region and backup features? What are hardware, electricity, internet, replacement and administration costs?

Example: three players on The Island

Three players on The Island is a relatively small target, but it still does not produce a reliable fixed RAM number. The result depends on whether the world is new or mature, how many structures and creatures accumulate, which settings are enabled and whether mods are installed. The sensible approach is to define that exact scenario, run it on the intended host, and record peak memory and CPU behavior during normal play.

For a lightly modded private world, prioritize a fast single-thread CPU, four logical cores available to the instance, sufficient memory headroom and an SSD-backed installation. If the group later adds large mod collections, multiple maps or a long-running build-heavy save, repeat the measurement; the original small-group result should not be treated as a permanent ceiling.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

Memory exhaustion or heavy paging

Symptoms include long pauses, save failures, operating-system warnings and an ASA process that is terminated. Stop unnecessary services, reduce simultaneous workloads, review mods and move to a host with more memory. Do not solve persistent paging by merely increasing virtual-memory limits; that uses disk as a slower substitute for RAM.

High CPU or simulation stalls

Check whether one logical core is saturated even when total CPU usage looks moderate. Fast single-thread performance matters because the main gameplay thread can be the bottleneck. Reduce competing workloads, avoid running extra instances on the same busy cores and test again after changing settings or mods.

Disk-full errors or failed updates

Inspect free space, logs and save growth. Preserve a verified backup, remove obsolete logs or downloads according to your retention policy, and expand storage before the next update. Keep backups on a separate device so deleting live files cannot erase the recovery copy.

Players cannot connect

Confirm that the server process is running, the configured network path is reachable, firewall and router rules are correct, and the address has not changed. Test from an external connection; a local test can succeed even when remote players are blocked.

Licensing and commercial use

The community setup reference describes dedicated servers as limited to personal, non-commercial hosting unless a dedicated-server license is obtained from Nitrado, and it discusses limits on monetary gain under the EULA. Those terms can change, and the wiki is not the license text. Anyone charging for access, operating a public service or otherwise monetizing a server should read the current official terms and obtain any required authorization before launch.

What to remember when choosing a host

Start with the workload, not a headline RAM number. Separate client specifications from server guidance, size memory from map and mod behavior, favor single-thread CPU performance while providing the recommended logical-core capacity, budget storage beyond the approximately 11 GiB installation, and use a supported 64-bit Windows or Windows-like environment. Then choose self-hosting or managed hosting according to who should own backups, updates, networking and recovery.
