Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Ascended servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
For a faster ARK: Survival Ascended client, lower Resolution Scale first, disable Motion Blur, reduce Foliage and Fluid Interaction, turn off Virtual Shadows, and switch Lumen global illumination to Screen Space on weak hardware. For a dedicated server, use NVMe storage, set a player cap you can actually support, reduce structure and wild-dino pressure, and move autosaves from the commonly used 15-minute interval to 30 minutes only after testing. These changes address different bottlenecks: your graphics settings improve local frame rate, while server limits and storage reduce simulation and save-time stalls.
What causes poor performance in ARK: Survival Ascended?
ASA combines an Unreal Engine 5 world with dynamic lighting, volumetric effects, large structure counts, creatures and network simulation. A low frame rate on one computer is a client-rendering problem; rubber-banding, delayed inventory actions or everyone freezing together usually indicate server CPU, memory, storage or save pressure. A large base can create both problems: the server must replicate many objects, while each nearby client must draw them.
Measure before changing settings. Note average and one-percent-low FPS in the same location, watch GPU utilization and VRAM, and record server tick time, CPU use, RAM use and save duration. Change one setting or server variable at a time, then repeat the same test after a restart. Community guides and host tables provide useful starting points, but they are not official Studio Wildcard requirements and may describe different patches, maps or mod stacks.
Fast client-side fixes for low FPS
1. Lower Resolution Scale
Resolution Scale changes the internal render resolution and normally produces the largest immediate FPS gain after expensive lighting options. A community guide suggests 70–85% for weak hardware and 90–100% for mid-range systems. Start at the low end only if the GPU is saturated; raise it until image quality is acceptable. UI elements remain at display resolution, but the 3D scene becomes softer as the value falls.

2. Disable Motion Blur
Set Motion Blur to Off. It does not always deliver the biggest benchmark increase, but removing the post-processing pass makes camera movement clearer and avoids blur that can feel like stutter during combat or traversal.
3. Reduce Foliage and Fluid Interaction
Lower Foliage and Fluid Interaction next. Dense grass, leaves, water interaction and physics effects create many objects for the CPU and GPU to update. The visual trade-off is less reactive vegetation and water, but the setting is usually less damaging to readability than lowering every quality option.

4. Turn off Virtual Shadows
Disable Virtual Shadows when frame pacing is poor, especially around large bases, forests and complex rock formations. Shadows become less detailed, yet the setting can remove a substantial amount of GPU work. If performance remains stable, re-enable it and compare in the area where you actually play rather than in an empty beach scene.
Lighting, clouds and upscaling choices
Lumen global illumination
Lumen is commonly identified as ASA’s largest lighting cost. On weak hardware, choose Screen Space global illumination instead. The difference is easiest to see in caves and at dawn or dusk; in open daylight it is often subtle. Keep Lumen if visual fidelity matters more than a stable frame rate and your GPU has headroom.

DLSS or FSR upscaling
Use the upscaler supported by your graphics card (DLSS on compatible NVIDIA hardware or FSR on a wider range of GPUs). Select a quality mode first, then move to Balanced or Performance if the GPU remains the limit. Upscaling and Resolution Scale interact, so test them together: an aggressive combination can produce shimmering foliage and unreadable distant signs.
Frame Generation
Enable Frame Generation only when the ungenerated, or base, frame rate is already stable above 60 FPS. A community recommendation warns that interpolation can make input latency noticeable during combat when the base rate is low. Treat the displayed generated FPS as a smoothness feature, not as a replacement for adequate simulation and input response.

Volumetric clouds and fog (PC only)
On the PC console, test these commands:
r.VolumetricCloud 0
r.VolumetricFog 0
Test the cloud command under an open sky before judging it; cloud cover can make a scene appear to change for reasons unrelated to the command. These commands are PC-only and may be reset by a patch or launch configuration. If a command has no effect, remove it and rely on the in-game options rather than assuming the server is at fault.
Recommended client profiles
| Hardware situation | Starting profile | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Weak GPU or laptop | Resolution Scale 70–85%; Screen Space lighting; Motion Blur Off; Foliage and Fluid Interaction low; Virtual Shadows Off; upscaling on Balanced or Performance | Image softness, VRAM usage and one-percent-low FPS in forests and bases |
| Mid-range system | Resolution Scale 90–100%; Screen Space or Lumen after testing; Motion Blur Off; moderate foliage and fluid settings; Virtual Shadows Off if frame pacing dips; upscaling on Quality | GPU utilization near 100%, shader stutter and temperature limits |
| High-end system | Keep native or near-native scale and Lumen only if frame time is stable; use Quality upscaling; enable Frame Generation only with base FPS above 60 | CPU limits around large bases, server latency and inconsistent frame pacing |
Apply changes in a repeatable order: Resolution Scale, Motion Blur, Foliage and Fluid Interaction, Virtual Shadows, Lumen mode, then volumetrics and upscaling. This order gives the largest likely gains before you spend time tuning minor texture or post-processing settings.

Mods and client maintenance
Prune unused mods
Remove mods that the server no longer requires. Every enabled mod can add assets, scripts, memory use or loading time, and a client may continue carrying obsolete content until it is removed from the mod list. Keep a written list of required mods and their order so a clean installation is easy to reproduce.
Isolate large content updates
When a major mod or map update arrives, test it by itself on a copy of your setup. If FPS, crashes or loading time change, you can identify the update instead of debugging an entire stack. Only return the change to the live server after joining, traveling to a busy base and completing a save cycle without new errors.

Use fast storage for the server and saves
Place the server executable, active map files, mod data and save directory on an NVMe SSD. Faster storage shortens world loading and save writes; it cannot compensate for an overloaded CPU or an excessive object count. Keep regular external backups because an SSD is not a backup strategy.
Set a realistic player cap
Set the maximum players to the population your hardware and map can sustain, not the largest number the software accepts. Each additional player increases replication, creature activity, inventories and network work. Test at peak concurrency, including the busiest base and a travel event, before advertising a larger slot count.

Control structures and creature pressure
Structure count, abandoned tames and wild creatures all increase the simulation and replication set. Remove abandoned builds and unnecessary tames, and lower wild-creature pressure before attempting obscure engine variables. A community guide suggests a value near 10,500 for MaxStructuresInRange, or about 8,000 on servers with 50 or more players, but both the key name and whether the current build honors it are disputed. Treat those figures as experiments, not guarantees.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Autosave settings and save-time stutter
Large worlds can pause while the server writes a save. Community guidance often describes a 15-minute default and suggests 30 minutes to reduce the frequency of visible save stutters. The setting name is inconsistent: one guide uses AutoSavePeriodMinutes in [ServerSettings], while another uses ServerAutoSavePeriodMinutes. Back up the configuration, change only one spelling, restart, and confirm in logs that the interval actually changed. If the server still saves every 15 minutes, revert and test the alternate key.
Do not assume a longer interval fixes a crash or prevents data loss. The claim that an autosave fails when its duration exceeds the interval has not been established, and a 30-minute interval means up to 30 minutes of progress may be at risk in a crash. Watch save duration on the busiest map and choose an interval that finishes reliably.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire configuration and save directories.
- Edit the file in a plain-text editor, preserving section headers such as
[ServerSettings]and the exact capitalization of keys. - Change one variable, save the file, and start the server.
- Confirm the value in startup logs or in-game behavior; a key that is silently ignored is worse than no change because it creates false confidence.
- Run a controlled load test, then keep or revert the change using the backup.
The structure variable has several names in circulation. A Steam discussion and the wiki use TheMaxStructuresInRange; a generator site calls plain MaxStructuresInRange outdated and says the range may be hard-coded in the current build. If neither key changes the observed limit, remove it and manage structure density through building policy rather than adding more undocumented options.

RAM and CPU planning: what the conflicting figures mean
Published recommendations vary because map size, player count, mods and operating-system overhead vary. One host guide gives 32 GB as a minimum for a single-map vanilla server, 64 GB for a cluster and 128 GB for a fully modded cluster with more than 30 players. Another recommends at least 64 GB of DDR5 for 50 or more players. A host table reports typical ASA process use of roughly 7.5–12 or more GB depending on the map. These figures describe different workloads, so 32 GB is a rough upper bound for a small, carefully managed installation—not a universal requirement.
| Workload description | Published guide figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-map vanilla | 32 GB minimum in one host guide | Leave headroom for the operating system, backups and bursts; monitor actual peak use |
| Cluster | 64 GB in the same guide | Budget for each active map and shared services, not just one process |
| Fully modded cluster with 30+ players | 128 GB in the same guide | Use measured peak memory and swap avoidance to validate the purchase |
| 50+ players | 64 GB or more in another guide | Confirm with peak concurrency and mod load; this is not an official threshold |
| Typical ASA process | About 7.5–12+ GB, map-dependent | Do not mistake process usage for total machine capacity |
CPU guidance is similarly unsettled. One host says ASA is especially sensitive to single-thread performance; another says core count matters more than clock speed. In practice, favor a modern CPU with strong per-core performance and enough cores for multiple maps, mods and operating-system work. A host guide considers roughly 150–200% CPU usage healthy for vanilla and 200–400% for a heavy mod stack because the server uses several threads; percentages above 100% can therefore be normal. Compare those readings with tick time, player reports and save duration rather than treating 100% as a universal ceiling.
A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
- Classify the symptom. If only your screen is slow, start with client settings. If all players freeze, inspect server CPU, RAM, storage latency and save events.
- Reproduce in a controlled location. Test an empty beach, a forest, a cave and the busiest base. Record FPS or server timing in each.
- Apply the high-impact client changes. Lower Resolution Scale, disable Motion Blur, reduce Foliage and Fluid Interaction, disable Virtual Shadows, then test Screen Space lighting.
- Check content load. Temporarily remove an unneeded mod or isolate a recent update. Do not change several mods at once.
- Inspect server pressure. Compare peak player count, structure density, wild creatures, abandoned tames, RAM headroom, CPU by thread and save duration.
- Change one server variable. Test the autosave spelling or structure key separately, verify that the running server accepted it, and keep a rollback copy.
- Retest after a full restart. Some settings are read only at launch; a live edit can appear successful while doing nothing.
Claims that need caution
Several frequently repeated optimization statements are not established by the available evidence: that Unreal Engine 5.3 caps ASA tick rate at 30, that the -UseLargePages launch option is 15% faster, and that incremental saves reduce save time by about 40%. Test these in your own environment before relying on them, and do not present them as guaranteed fixes. Settings and console commands can change with patches, so check current patch notes and revalidate after an update.
The practical distinction is simple: client settings are low-cost and reversible, while server changes affect every player and can risk saves if edited carelessly. Start with measurable rendering cuts for local FPS, then control player, structure and creature load and move the server to fast storage. Use published RAM and CPU numbers as planning ranges, not promises, and trust observed frame time, tick behavior and completed saves on your specific map and mod set.
