An ARK server version mismatch means the dedicated server is running a different build from the player’s client. The safest repair is to update the client completely, restart Steam or the console, stop the ASA server, update or validate the server files with SteamCMD, and restart the server only after SteamCMD finishes without errors.

Back up the world, tribe and player data, and configuration first. A mismatch by itself does not indicate a corrupted save, so do not wipe the map or restore an old backup merely because players cannot join.

What an ARK server version mismatch actually means

When a player sees a version-mismatch message, the server is advertising a build number that does not match the build installed on the client. The mismatch commonly appears immediately after a game patch: Steam updates a player’s copy while the dedicated server remains on the previous build, or the server update completes in a folder that the production start script never uses.

The practical symptoms are consistent:

  • The server appears in the browser, but joining fails with a version or incompatible-build message.
  • Only some players can connect, usually because their clients updated at different times.
  • A host control panel reports that an update completed, while the server list still shows the old build.
  • SteamCMD reports that no files changed even though the running server is clearly behind.

This is a software-build problem, not proof that the world, character or tribe data is damaged. The dedicated server may be healthy and simply waiting for the same patch that the client has already received.

Check which ARK edition and server installation you are updating

The procedure and app ID in this guide apply to an ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) dedicated server distributed through SteamCMD. The dedicated-server app ID used by the guides is 2430930. Steam community game pages sometimes show 2399830, which is a different app ID; using it as the server update target can leave the real installation unchanged.

If you run multiple maps, test servers or backup copies, write down the exact folder launched by your production service or batch file. A frequent cause of a persistent mismatch is updating one copy while the start script points to another. Check the path in the service definition, scheduled task, container volume, or host-panel installation field rather than relying on a folder name displayed in a download window.

Back up the server before touching the files

Stop or schedule a maintenance window before making the backup. The ArkToolbox update guidance recommends preserving all of the following:

  • The world save for the map you operate.
  • Tribe data and individual player data.
  • Server configuration files, including launch settings and gameplay configuration.
  • Any custom scripts, mod configuration, or service files that are not regenerated by SteamCMD.

Copy the backup to a different disk or host if possible, and record the timestamp and the build shown by the server before updating. SteamCMD validation checks the installed program files; it does not verify the integrity of the world save. A successful validation therefore does not replace a save backup.

Use this repair sequence in order

Changing the order can make the diagnosis harder. Complete each step before moving to the next.

  1. Update every affected client

On Steam, allow ARK to finish downloading and installing its patch, then restart Steam. Console players should fully apply the system’s game update and restart the console if the platform reports a pending update. Ask every player who is testing the server to do the same; one unpatched client can produce a mismatch even after the server is fixed.

  2. Stop the dedicated server cleanly

Use the host panel’s Stop control or stop the Windows service, systemd unit, container, or start script you normally use. Do not run SteamCMD against files that the server process is actively locking or changing. Wait until the process has exited and the save has completed.

  3. Run a complete SteamCMD update and validation

From the SteamCMD executable, run the command used by the Supercraft Host and ArkToolbox guides:

    steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit

The validate option compares the installed program files with the current depot and replaces files that are missing or different. It takes longer than a routine update and is not necessarily required for every normal patch, but it is the appropriate first repair when the server advertises an old build or a previous update may have failed.

Watch the complete output. A clean run should reach the quit step without a disk, permission, network, or authentication error. If your host wraps SteamCMD in a script, confirm that the script is operating in the same installation directory identified earlier.

  4. Restart only after SteamCMD finishes

Start the server with the normal production command after the update has completed. Starting it while SteamCMD is still downloading can leave a mixture of old and new files, and restarting too early can make a host panel report a false success.

  5. Compare the advertised build with a freshly updated client

Wait for the server to finish booting and appear in the browser. Check the version or build shown in the server listing against the build displayed by the updated client. Have one player test a connection before opening the server to everyone. If the listing still shows the old build, stop again and continue with the checks below instead of deleting the save.

When SteamCMD says it updated but the server did not

The update went to a second copy

This is the most important path check. Community reports describe a script that launches folder A while SteamCMD updates folder B. The command can finish successfully because folder B is valid, yet the production server never changes. Compare the full path in the start command with the full path SteamCMD uses, including drive letter, case, mapped volume, and container mount. Remove stale shortcuts and duplicate service definitions that can start an older copy.

The command was assembled in the wrong order

Some users report a silent no-op when an install-directory argument was placed before the login in a wrapper that did not parse it correctly. Do not copy a command from one host into another blindly. Start with the known command above, then apply the host’s documented directory setting in the location its wrapper expects. Confirm the output names app ID 2430930 and the intended install path.

The disk is full

A full system or game volume can stop an update even when the control panel only shows a generic failure. Check free space on the volume containing the server, the SteamCMD temporary download location, and the volume holding the save. Clear safe temporary files or expand the volume, then rerun the update and validation. Do not remove save files to make room unless you have a verified external backup and have confirmed exactly what you are deleting.

The routine update was not enough

A plain app update may leave a damaged or incomplete program file untouched. Run the command with validate after stopping the server. Validation takes longer because SteamCMD checks the installed files, but it gives you a stronger answer than repeatedly restarting an unchanged installation.

The SteamCMD download itself is broken

If the path, disk and command are correct but SteamCMD repeatedly fails, download a fresh copy of the official SteamCMD archive and run the update again from that clean executable. One user report describes success after re-downloading the SteamCMD zip. Treat this as a recovery step, not evidence that the world save needs to be replaced.

Anonymous login versus an owning Steam account

The command above uses +login anonymous, which normally works for the dedicated-server app according to the ArkToolbox guidance. Steam delays or authentication changes have also been reported, and some community users say anonymous access stopped working for them and required a Steam account that owns the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If anonymous login fails, capture the exact authentication error, stop the server, and retry with the Steam account your hosting setup authorizes. Do not publish that account’s password in a script or support ticket. If the account requires a guard code, complete the prompt interactively or use the host’s protected credential mechanism. A login failure is different from a version mismatch: solve authentication first, then inspect the downloaded build.

Self-hosted SteamCMD update or host control panel?

The files and compatibility rules are the same, but control differs. Choose the path that matches who can actually change the installation.

Update method Who controls timing Best first check Main failure mode
Self-hosted SteamCMD You control the command, folder and restart Verify app ID 2430930 and the production install path The script updates a different copy, lacks permissions, or runs out of disk space
Host control panel The provider controls when the depot is available and how the panel invokes SteamCMD Check the panel’s reported build, maintenance status and selected installation The provider has not rolled out the patch, or the panel restarts before the update finishes

If a rented host has not made the patch available, waiting is the correct action. A local validation cannot install a depot that the host has not received. Ask support whether the server is on the same region and branch as the clients, and request the build number they see. Do not wipe the map to force an update.

Understand minor and major patch behavior

Community posts disagree about how much version skew ARK tolerates. Some report that a minor update can allow a client and server with different build numbers to connect, while a major update requires both sides to move together. These are user observations, not a published compatibility rule from Studio Wildcard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation What has been reported How to act
Small or minor patch Some players have connected with slightly different builds Still update both sides; treat any successful mismatch as temporary and unsupported
Major patch Clients and servers generally need the same release before joining works Wait for both updates, then validate the server before restarting
Example from a community report Client 47.4 and server 47.2 were described as normal in one thread Do not use that anecdote as a rule for your build or map

Patch notices may label releases as Major or Minor, but labels seen in community summaries should not override the current Steam or official notice. Record the label and build shown for your particular patch, then test the exact client-server pair you operate.

Do not confuse a rollout delay with corruption

There are two update events: the patch becomes available to clients, and the dedicated-server depot becomes available to hosts. They can occur at different times. A forum user reported that a patch was not yet available for personal servers; that is plausible, but a single report cannot establish a schedule.

Use this decision rule:

  • If the client updated, SteamCMD cannot see a newer server build, and your host confirms the server depot is not live, wait.
  • If SteamCMD downloads files but the advertised build does not change, investigate the path, app ID and restart process.
  • If SteamCMD reports errors, fix authentication, disk, permissions or network problems before judging compatibility.
  • If a freshly validated server and a fully updated client still fail on the same build, collect logs and contact the host or Studio Wildcard support with the exact build and time.

When to restore a backup—and when not to

Restore a backup only after a freshly validated server still fails with the same build and you have ruled out a wrong folder, incomplete restart, missing patch rollout, authentication error and full disk. A mismatch alone is not a reason to restore, roll back, or wipe the world.

If you must test a backup, preserve the current save first. Work on a copy in a separate test installation so that a troubleshooting attempt cannot overwrite the live world. Restore the world, tribe, player and configuration files as a consistent set; mixing files from different timestamps can create a separate data problem that looks like an update failure.

Troubleshooting matrix

Symptom Likely cause Next action
Players updated, but the server listing still shows the old build Server was not updated, or the wrong copy was updated Stop the server, verify the production path and run the app 2430930 validation command
SteamCMD exits immediately with no useful change Wrapper parsed the directory or login arguments incorrectly Run the known command directly and verify its output and target path
SteamCMD reports a disk or write error Insufficient free space or permissions Check every relevant volume, free space, and the account running SteamCMD
Anonymous login is rejected Steam delay or an account requirement Retry later, then use an authorized owning account securely if the host requires it
Control panel says update complete, but no build change appears Provider rollout lag, stale panel status, or an alternate installation Ask the provider for the installed build and selected path; do not wipe the save
Validation completes but players still cannot join Clients are not on the same build, the server restarted from another folder, or the patch is major Restart clients and server, compare exact advertised builds, and check current patch status
Update fails after a long download Interrupted or damaged SteamCMD files Back up again, obtain a fresh SteamCMD package, and rerun validation

Prepare for the next patch

A short maintenance checklist prevents most repeat incidents:

  • Keep an external, timestamped backup of the world, tribe, player and configuration files.
  • Record the production server path and the app ID in the update script.
  • Leave enough free space for the patch download, temporary files and the installed server.
  • Update a test client first, then schedule the server update instead of allowing an automatic restart during play.
  • Stop the server before SteamCMD runs and start it only after a clean completion.
  • After boot, compare the server-list build with a freshly updated client before announcing that the server is open.
  • Keep the previous SteamCMD package and a known-good start script available for recovery, while never restoring a save solely because of a mismatch.

About the reported Unreal Engine 5.8 and v91 change

A 2026 guide lists an Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade on October 28 and a v91 change to the dedicated server’s boot process. The build numbers and dates in that report do not line up cleanly, so the date and boot behavior should be verified in Steam or an official Studio Wildcard notice before you plan maintenance around them.

If an engine upgrade of that scope occurs, it would likely behave like a major change: clients and servers would need to update together, and startup scripts or launch settings might require adjustment. Do not apply a guessed date, build number or boot argument to a live server. Follow the actual patch notice, back up first, and use the same stop-update-validate-restart sequence.
