The Giganotosaurus (Giga) is an apex carnivore built for extreme damage. Taming one is a major operation: you must safely knock it out, keep it unconscious and protected, and manage its food and torpor until the tame finishes. There is no universal food count or “good stat” threshold because map, server rates, level, taming effectiveness, imprinting and breeding all change the result.
For riding, unlock the Giganotosaurus Saddle at level 96. The saddle provides 25 armor and costs 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots. Once raised and equipped, a well-bred Giga’s main job is high-damage combat and other apex-creature work.

What the Giganotosaurus is good at
The Giganotosaurus is a large carnivorous dinosaur that the ARK Official Community Wiki describes as “one of the most powerful creatures in the games.” Its value is concentrated in combat: it can deliver enormous melee damage and absorb punishment that would overwhelm most ordinary tames. That power does not make every Giga interchangeable. Wild level, inherited stat distribution, taming effectiveness, imprinting, breeding quality, rage and your server’s rules all affect what a particular animal can actually do.
Think of a Giga as a long-term project rather than a quick tame. You need a controlled knockout, a protected taming site, enough suitable food for your rates and a plan for maintaining torpor. Afterward, saddle quality, rider positioning and the creature’s lineage determine whether it is merely impressive or genuinely dependable in the field.

Prepare before you approach a wild Giga
Confirm the edition and server settings
ARK versions and unofficial servers can alter creature levels, taming speed, food drain, torpor drain, damage, breeding rates and available engrams. Record the settings that affect taming before collecting supplies. A quantity that works on one server can be badly wrong on another, so generate food and narcotic requirements for the exact map, difficulty, rates and creature level you are using.
Choose a location you can control
- Scout an area with enough room to build or use a trap without exposing the tame to additional predators, environmental hazards or player traffic.
- Plan an escape route for the survivor and a separate protected position from which you can check the unconscious creature.
- Use a trap or other controlled knockout setup appropriate to the map and game version. The design must hold a Giga securely; an improvised pen that works for smaller carnivores is not automatically safe.
- Keep replacement building materials and a way to deal with threats nearby. A single wild predator reaching the taming site can ruin hours of work.
Bring a complete taming kit
Carry the food accepted by the Giga in your edition, narcotics or another torpor-maintenance method allowed by the game mode, weapons and ammunition suitable for a controlled knockout, protective gear, healing supplies, building materials and a way to move or defend yourself. Leave enough inventory space for the creature’s food and for emergency supplies. If another survivor is helping, agree in advance who will shoot, who will watch torpor and who will clear threats.

- Find and evaluate the target. Note its level and location before engaging. If your goal is breeding, record the wild level and later compare the post-tame stat distribution rather than judging the animal only by its level.
- Finish the trap before luring. Build or position the map-appropriate containment structure first. Check that you can enter and leave safely and that the Giga cannot damage a weak section while you are setting up.
- Lure the Giga into containment. Keep a clear line to the exit and avoid bringing other hostile creatures into the trap. If the animal leaves the intended area, reset rather than chasing it into an uncontrolled location.
- Knock it out under controlled conditions. Use the knockout method appropriate to your edition and equipment. Maintain distance, watch the Giga’s movement and stop firing when it is unconscious; unnecessary hits can kill a creature you intended to tame.
- Secure the unconscious animal. Clear nearby threats, repair or reinforce the trap and establish a protected approach. Do not leave the body exposed while you gather food or supplies.
- Load the taming food. Put the correct carnivore food into the inventory and let the normal taming process begin. Do not rely on a fixed online quantity unless it was calculated for your exact server settings, level and food choice.
- Maintain torpor. Monitor the torpor bar and administer the appropriate narcotic resource before the creature wakes. Torpor drain and timing vary with settings, so use the game’s current values rather than a memorized interval.
- Protect the tame until completion. Check the area repeatedly, keep the inventory supplied and avoid damaging the unconscious Giga. If the tame is interrupted, determine whether food, torpor, damage or a nearby threat caused the problem before trying again.
- Claim and inspect the result. When taming completes, check the final level, health, melee damage, stamina and weight. Name or tag the animal with its origin and stats if it will enter a breeding program.
Food, torpor and taming-time decisions
The authoritative guidance confirms that taming a wild Giga is a demanding project involving food and narcotic management, but it does not establish one universal number of items or a universal schedule. Treat every published count as conditional. The correct calculation depends on at least these inputs:
- wild level and the creature’s food drain;
- your server’s taming-speed and resource-consumption multipliers;
- the food type you choose and its effectiveness in your edition;
- torpor drain and the narcotic method available in your game mode; and
- any changes made by a mod, cluster rule or difficulty setting.
Calculate for those inputs immediately before the tame, then bring a margin for delays and interruptions. Keep the creature’s torpor under observation instead of assuming that a previous tame’s timing still applies. If the bar falls unexpectedly, pause other work and stabilize torpor; losing consciousness can reset the project’s safety margin and expose the Giga to predators.

Giganotosaurus stats: what to look for
Reference wild values
The cited wild baseline lists 35,000 health, 400 stamina and 10,000 torpidity. These are reference values for a wild creature, not a promise that every spawned Giga or every post-tame result will display those exact numbers. Level increases and taming-effectiveness bonuses change the final creature.

Judge the stat distribution, not just the level
Start by recording the wild level and the points placed into health, melee damage, stamina and weight. Two Gigas of the same level can have very different distributions. For a combat line, health and melee are normally the first comparison axes: one candidate may survive longer, while another may deal more damage. Stamina and weight matter when the animal must travel, carry equipment or remain active between fights.

Effectiveness bonuses change the final level and can make a high-quality tame look different from its wild starting point. For animals intended for regular riding, also record imprinting results and the breeder’s lineage. An imprinted individual and a wild-caught animal with similar visible numbers are not equivalent assets if your server applies imprint bonuses.
Build a breeding standard instead of chasing a magic number
No single “good Giga stat” threshold is established across all ARK versions and server configurations. Set a local standard: compare several candidates captured under the same rules, keep the strongest health and melee lines, and document mutations or other breeding changes separately. Rejecting a candidate should be based on its role and your project’s baseline, not on an internet number detached from your settings.

Giganotosaurus Saddle: unlock, craft and equip
The Giganotosaurus Saddle is the riding saddle for a tamed Giga. It is an engram unlocked at level 96 and costs 75 engram points. The saddle provides 25 armor.

- Reach level 96 and learn the Giganotosaurus Saddle engram in the appropriate engram menu for your edition.
- Gather 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots.
- Craft the saddle using the station or inventory required by your version.
- Place the finished saddle in the tamed Giga’s saddle slot and mount only after checking the creature’s health, surroundings and behavior.
The listed material cost is for the saddle itself. It does not include the resources consumed by the trap, knockout, taming food, narcotics, repairs or later breeding work.
Practical uses after the tame
High-damage combat
Combat is the Giga’s defining role. Use it where exceptional melee output and durability justify the risk and logistics of bringing an apex creature. Test a newly tamed animal in a controlled area before committing it to an important operation. Confirm that the rider can control movement, that the saddle is equipped and that the animal responds predictably under your server’s settings.
Apex-creature tasks
A mature, well-bred Giga can serve as a heavy assault tame, a deterrent around valuable territory and a tool for clearing dangerous areas. The exact list of safe activities depends on the map, local spawns, tribe rules and configuration. Do not treat the species’ reputation as a universal damage benchmark: practical performance changes with level, breeding, taming effectiveness, imprinting, rage behavior and positioning.

Rage and positioning management
Rage is one of the factors that can change a Giga’s practical result. Keep the rider’s view clear, avoid fighting in cramped terrain and watch the creature’s condition during a prolonged engagement. Give yourself room to disengage rather than assuming raw statistics will rescue a bad position. Server-specific damage and behavior settings can also make a familiar tactic unreliable.

Troubleshooting a failed or unsafe tame
The Giga escapes the trap
Do not continue firing while improvising in open terrain. Break contact, secure the area and rebuild a containment method rated for the creature and map. Recheck every opening before attempting another lure.
The creature wakes up
Review torpor drain, the narcotic resource used, server multipliers and the timing of your checks. On the next attempt, calculate requirements for that exact configuration and keep a larger reserve rather than relying on a remembered schedule.
The creature dies during the knockout
Reduce unnecessary damage, use a more controlled firing position and stop as soon as the Giga is unconscious. Clear other attackers before beginning the knockout so stray damage is not mistaken for weapon damage.
The finished tame has disappointing stats
Compare the wild level, pre-tame distribution, taming effectiveness and imprinting record. A high level alone does not guarantee strong health or melee. Keep the result only if it meets the breeding or combat standard you established for your server.

Verify that the level-96 engram is learned, that the required crafting station or inventory is available in your edition and that you have 680 hide, 350 fiber and 120 metal ingots or scrap metal ingots. If a mod or server rule changes engrams, use that configuration’s current requirement rather than the base-game list.
