Best ARK bait at a glance
Fishing bait controls which fish can take the hook and the largest fish the bait can attract. The maximum-size figure is a limit from the wiki’s fishing table, not a guarantee that every cast will produce a fish of that size. Larger eligible fish generally provide a better chance at valuable loot, but the ARK Official Community Wiki pages do not publish a single guaranteed loot table.

Sap: a Coelacanth-only option
Sap is the narrowest choice. It cannot attract Sabertooth Salmon or Piranha, and its size ceiling is the smallest in the table. It makes sense when a nearby school contains only Coelacanth and you want to conserve Leech Blood or Honey for a later trip.

Leech Blood: the flexible default
Leech Blood covers every species listed for the Fishing Rod and has the highest bait coefficient according to the rod page, ahead of Honey and Sap. It is therefore the practical all-rounder when you do not know which fish will be available. Remember that the same resource is used for Lesser Antidote, so leave enough in storage for poison treatment before spending your entire supply on a long fishing session.
Giant Bee Honey: maximum-size fishing
Honey reaches the highest listed fish-size limit and can attract all three species. The rod page specifically recommends it when the target fish is too large for Leech Blood. Honey is also consumed by Sweet Vegetable Cake and Extraordinary Kibble, and it spoils quickly in ordinary storage. Put it directly on the rod when possible; the wiki notes that this preserves it for fishing rather than leaving it exposed in an inventory.

How to fish with the ARK Fishing Rod
1. Craft the rod
- Reach level 18, the level at which the Fishing Rod engram becomes available.
- Craft one rod from 12 Wood, 50 Fiber, and 20 Thatch.
- Carry the bait you selected, plus a chair, bench, canoe, or a tamed Pelagornis if you plan to fish from the water.
2. Set up a valid seat
The rod only works while you are sitting. Valid platforms listed for the rod are a Wooden Chair, Wooden Bench, Canoe, or Pelagornis in the water. Place a chair or bench at the shoreline with enough clearance to sit, or position the canoe so the cast lands in open water. If the sit prompt does not appear, move the furniture away from uneven ground, rocks, foundations, and obstructing structures.
3. Load bait and cast near a fish
- Place Sap, Leech Blood, or Giant Bee Honey in the rod’s bait slot.
- Sit down, aim toward visible Coelacanth, Sabertooth Salmon, or Piranha, and cast close to the school rather than into empty water.
- Watch the line and water surface. A cast can fail simply because no eligible fish reached the hook before the bait window ended.
4. Complete the bite prompts
When a fish bites, ARK displays quick-time prompts. Press the indicated controls in the order and timing shown on screen. Missing a prompt ends that attempt; it does not mean the rod or bait is permanently broken. Recast with fresh bait and wait for another visible fish.

5. Plan the landing area
Fish in a location where you can safely stand up, retrieve the catch, and store loot. A hostile shoreline, deep water, or an obstructed canoe can turn a successful catch into a death run. Keep a spare seat or a second rod at a nearby base if fishing is part of your regular resource route.
Choosing bait for a specific fishing trip
- Target species first: use Sap only for Coelacanth; choose Leech Blood or Honey when Salmon or Piranha are possible targets.
- Target size second: use Honey when the fish you want exceeds Leech Blood’s listed size limit.
- Protect scarce resources: reserve Honey for size-focused fishing if you also need it for Sweet Vegetable Cake or Extraordinary Kibble.
- Account for medical needs: keep Leech Blood aside for Lesser Antidote before turning the remainder into bait.
- Do not promise a loot result: bait size and coefficient improve eligibility, but the ARK Official Community Wiki pages do not state a guaranteed item list or drop quality for each fish.
Fishing problems and fixes
The rod will not cast
- Confirm that bait is loaded in the Fishing Rod, not merely in your inventory.
- Sit on one of the supported platforms; standing beside a chair is not enough.
- Move the seat or canoe into a clear position with water immediately in front of the cast.
- Check that the rod has not broken and that you are not in a menu, inventory screen, or animation that blocks the cast.
No fish bites
- Move closer to a visible school and cast beside, not far beyond, the fish.
- Confirm that your bait can catch the species you are watching. Sap cannot catch Salmon or Piranha.
- Try a different shoreline or time of day if the area has little visible fish activity.
- Replace bait that has spoiled. Honey is especially vulnerable when left in ordinary storage.
The quick-time event keeps failing
- Read the on-screen prompt instead of relying on a memorized key; bindings and platforms can differ.
- Keep your camera and hands free of inventory windows so the prompt is visible.
- Use a stable seat or canoe position. Movement from waves, nearby creatures, or an unstable mount can make timing harder.
How ARK cooking works
Standard recipes in this guide can be cooked in a Cooking Pot or Industrial Cooker, and they require water. A recipe’s note is an optional ingredient list, not a prerequisite for the cooker: you can prepare a dish by adding the required ingredients directly even when you have not learned or read a note.
- Choose a Cooking Pot for portable or small-batch work, or an Industrial Cooker for larger production.
- Supply the ingredients and water shown by the recipe. Keep meat, berries, vegetables, and narcotics in separate stacks so you can identify missing components quickly.
- Start the cooker and wait for the finished item to appear.
- Move the food into appropriate storage immediately. No universal spoilage timers are published for these dishes, so use the item tooltip for the current map, server settings, and patch.

Lazarus Chowder for underwater caves
Lazarus Chowder is the preparation to carry when oxygen management is the main risk. It slows oxygen consumption underwater and provides regeneration effects, giving a diver more time to search, fight, and return to the surface. Because the effect is time-limited, eat it shortly before entering the water rather than while it sits unused in a storage box.
Ingredients
- 9 cooked meat, fish meat, or jerky
- 5 Savoroot
- 5 Longrass
- 10 Mejoberries
- 2 Narcotic
- Water
The meat entry allows cooked meat, fish meat, or jerky as the stated protein choice. Prepare multiple batches if the cave route includes long detours, but keep the food in a preserving setup appropriate to your server’s spoilage settings.

Underwater preparation checklist
- Carry a reserve supply in a separate inventory so one death does not remove every meal.
- Bring a way to return to the surface; the chowder reduces oxygen use but does not make drowning impossible.
- Use the dish before the descent and track the remaining effect time rather than assuming it lasts for the entire expedition.
Calien Soup for heat and desert travel
Calien Soup is the hot-biome choice. It increases hyperthermic insulation and slows water consumption, addressing the two pressures that make desert crossings dangerous. Its flavor text describes the dish as refreshing the body “like an oasis,” but the practical advantages are the quantified insulation and hydration effects in the table above.

Gather the berries and vegetables before beginning the batch so the cooker does not sit idle while you search for a missing stack. Carry extra drinking water anyway: the soup reduces consumption rather than removing the need to drink.
Fria Curry for snow and cold exposure
Fria Curry is designed for cold environments. The cooking table lists increased hypothermic insulation and a lower food-consumption rate, making it useful for snow travel, cold caves, and long waits away from a fire or shelter.
Ingredient planning
The ARK cooking table supplies the effects but does not state a complete ingredient list in the available material. Open the Fria Curry recipe entry or the in-game note for the current ingredient requirements, then verify the stacks in the Cooking Pot before starting a batch. Do not substitute a guessed list: recipe ingredients can differ after a patch or on a modified server.

Cold-weather use
- Consume it before leaving warm shelter so the insulation applies during the first exposure period.
- Keep ordinary food available; the curry slows food use but is not a replacement for a full food inventory.
- Pair it with shelter, armor, and a retreat route when entering a freezing cave.
Enduro Stew for melee and sustained fights
Enduro Stew is the combat meal in this set. Its published effect combines increased melee damage with continuous health regeneration, so it is most valuable when you will remain in melee range long enough to benefit from both effects.
Ingredient planning
The ARK cooking data identifies Enduro Stew’s effects but does not provide its full ingredient list. Use the current in-game recipe note or Cooking Pot entry rather than estimating components, especially before a boss preparation or a high-cost expedition.
Combat use
- Eat before engaging so the buff is active when the first damage exchange begins.
- Keep healing items separate; regeneration does not guarantee survival against burst damage.
- Track the 15-minute effect window and retreat before it expires if your plan depends on the bonus.
Focal Chili for movement and crafting
Focal Chili is the mobility and production option. The movement-speed increase helps with travel and hauling, while the crafting-skill increase improves crafting outcomes where that stat is used. It is a strong choice before a long resource run or a concentrated crafting session.
Ingredient planning
The ARK cooking reference gives Focal Chili’s effects but not a complete ingredient list. Consult the recipe note or cooker interface for the current components, and prepare the dish at base before leaving rather than carrying unverified ingredients into the field.
Best timing
- Consume it immediately before a route with repeated movement, hauling, or crafting.
- Do not waste the 15-minute window while standing in an inventory screen.
- Use a separate combat or environmental dish when insulation, oxygen control, or melee damage is the actual limiting factor.
Medical Brew and Energy Brew
Medical Brew
Medical Brew provides +40 health according to the cooking table. Keep it on an accessible hotbar slot for damage spikes, falls, or a retreat through hostile terrain. Because the ARK cooking reference does not state a spoilage period or consumption cooldown, rely on the current item tooltip and server settings.
Energy Brew
Energy Brew provides +40 stamina. It is useful when sprinting, climbing, swimming, or repeatedly using stamina-intensive attacks, but it does not replace food, water, or an environmental protection dish.

Short shoreline fishing trip
- Fishing Rod with Leech Blood if species are mixed or unknown.
- Wooden Chair or Wooden Bench placed near a safe shore.
- One spare bait stack and a storage box for catches.
- Medical Brew if the shoreline contains aggressive creatures.
Large-fish collection run
- Fishing Rod loaded with Giant Bee Honey.
- A canoe or Pelagornis when the target school is away from land.
- Preservation capacity for Honey and the catch; Honey should be attached to the rod rather than left loose.
- A clear escape route before beginning the quick-time sequence.
Underwater cave expedition
- Lazarus Chowder prepared with the listed protein, vegetables, berries, narcotic, and water.
- A spare batch because the effect lasts 15 minutes per use.
- Medical Brew and Energy Brew for health and stamina emergencies.
- A surface route and a way to abandon the dive if oxygen or health falls faster than expected.
Desert or snow crossing
- Calien Soup for heat or Fria Curry for cold, selected according to the destination rather than the departure biome.
- Extra ordinary food and water; both dishes reduce consumption but do not eliminate it.
- A shelter plan in case the effect expires before the crossing is complete.
Patch and server-setting cautions
The ARK Official Community Wiki pages do not state publication years for their numerical tables. Their values are therefore best treated as the current reference captured in October 2026, not immutable rules for every ARK build. Official or unofficial servers can also alter spoilage, crafting, and item behavior. Before a high-risk trip, inspect the live item description and test one inexpensive batch in the same game mode and map where you will play.
