ARK Explorer Notes are lore collectibles placed throughout the seven story ARKs: The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis: Part 1, Genesis: Part 2, and Lost Colony. Most are collected by moving your survivor, flyer, or mount into the note marker. A normal note grants 100 XP to you and the tame you are riding, then activates a 10-minute double-XP effect. Collecting every Explorer Note unlocks 10 additional Survivor levels.

The reliable way to find them is to match your exact game edition and map with the official Explorer Map, filter for Explorer Note markers, then use the official location table’s latitude, longitude, landmark description, and note ID to plan each stop. Coordinates are navigation aids rather than exact landing points, especially in caves and where ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended geometry differs.

What Explorer Notes are in ARK

Explorer Notes are written records and recorded conversations left by survivors. They expand ARK’s story while functioning as collectible in-game objects. The ARK Official Community Wiki defines them as collectibles scattered across the story ARKs and distinguishes them from ordinary world objects and creature information.

A creature record is a related but different collectible category. Creature records concentrate on a creature species and its behavior, whereas survivor notes focus on the people, events, and history of the ARK. A completion checklist should keep these categories separate so a missing creature record is not mistaken for a missing narrative note.

The story-ARK collection

The canonical story collection includes:

  • The Island
  • Scorched Earth
  • Aberration
  • Extinction
  • Genesis: Part 1
  • Genesis: Part 2
  • Lost Colony

The official map index also contains Explorer Maps for other ARK maps. Those maps can be useful for locating map-specific collectibles, but the seven-map list above is the story-ARK set used for the full Explorer Note collection. Do not assume that every non-story map has the same note system or contributes to the same completion reward.

What you get for collecting a note

Explorer Notes have both immediate experience benefits and a permanent completion reward. The effects below describe the documented behavior of the regular and special variants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Collectible or effect Immediate result Duration or stacking
Regular Explorer Note 100 XP to the player and 100 XP to the tame being ridden Applies “Explorer Note Found!” for 10 minutes; the effect doubles XP gain
Additional regular note during the effect Provides its normal XP and refreshes the effect’s expiration The double-XP effect does not stack with another regular note
Special Explorer Note Found! Quadruples XP Documented for She Who Waits notes or single-player settings
Regular plus special effect Can produce a temporary eight-times XP gain The special effect can stack with the regular effect
All Explorer Notes completed Unlocks 10 additional Survivor levels Permanent account or character progression reward, subject to the game’s normal save and character rules

The XP is awarded to the survivor and the ridden tame, so collecting notes while mounted can level both. The note effect is a temporary multiplier, not a permanent change to your XP rate. Because another regular note extends the timer rather than multiplying it again, route several nearby notes into one travel loop instead of expecting repeated notes to create an unlimited multiplier.

How to find exact Explorer Note locations

The official location table is the best source for individual entries. Each row records the map, note type, topic, author, latitude, longitude, a location description, and an ID. Use the coordinate pair to get close, then use the description and nearby landmark to identify the actual object.

  1. Identify the edition. Decide whether you are playing ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) or ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA). Use the map context that matches your game, because terrain, cave entrances, and object placement can differ.
  2. Confirm the map and DLC. Select The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis: Part 1, Genesis: Part 2, or Lost Colony, and make sure the relevant map content is installed and available to your character.
  3. Open the corresponding Explorer Map. Explorer Maps show Explorer Notes alongside cave entrances, loot crates, artifacts, deep-sea and desert loot crates, and supply crates. Turn on only the Explorer Note layer when planning a collection route.
  4. Read the matching location-table row. Copy the latitude, longitude, type, topic, and landmark description. The ID is useful when comparing a map marker with an administrative command or a personal checklist.
  5. Plan a safe approach. Treat coordinates as a navigation aid. Move to the nearest safe point, then search around the landmark. Cave geometry, vertical terrain, water, and version differences can put the object away from the point shown on a map.
  6. Reach the marker physically. Most notes are collected by walking or flying into them. A survivor can approach on foot; a flyer or ground mount can make long routes faster when that map and server rules allow it.
  7. Verify the pickup. Wait for the Explorer Note Found notification and check the in-game Explorer Note tracker. If the entry does not register, move through the object from another angle, confirm that you are at the correct map and edition, and check whether the marker represents a creature record or another collectible.
  8. Record completion immediately. Mark the note’s topic or ID in your own checklist. This prevents repeated trips when several entries share a cave, ruin, or coastline.

Why a coordinate is not an exact doorstep

Latitude and longitude identify a region on the map, not always the precise point at which your survivor must stand. A note can be above or below the displayed position, inside a cave passage, behind a structure, or on a nearby ledge. ASA and ASE can also place terrain and entrances differently. Use the coordinate to select the right area and the location description to finish the search.

The Island Explorer Notes

The Island is the original story map and has a dedicated interactive Explorer Map with Explorer Note markers. The map is available in separate ASE and ASA contexts, so select the edition shown in the map interface before copying coordinates.

Recommended Island workflow

  • Start with the interactive map’s Explorer Note filter rather than searching every marker category.
  • Group nearby markers by coastline, inland region, and cave entrance so travel time is not wasted crossing the island repeatedly.
  • Read each table description before entering a cave. A surface coordinate can point to an underground route or a nearby entrance rather than the note itself.
  • Carry a return plan for caves and high-risk areas; a note pickup is not worth losing a character or tame when the route can be attempted later with better equipment.

The Island’s dedicated map is particularly useful for validating whether a marker belongs to ASE or ASA. If a marker appears to be missing, switch map context before assuming that the note has been removed.

Scorched Earth Explorer Notes

Scorched Earth is part of the story-ARK collection. Use the Scorched Earth Explorer Map and its matching location-table entries, not a coordinate list copied from a different map or edition.

Planning a Scorched Earth route

  • Group notes by practical travel corridors and nearby landmarks rather than by note ID alone.
  • Use the table’s location description to distinguish exposed markers from entries reached through structures or underground approaches.
  • Plan water, shelter, and a safe extraction route before a long note run. The map’s environmental hazards can make a short coordinate-to-coordinate trip more demanding than the distance suggests.
  • Recheck the edition whenever a marker appears offset. Coordinates from ASE and ASA should not be treated as interchangeable without verification.

No single authoritative per-map total is established in the available official overview, so a completion checklist should use the current map table and your in-game tracker rather than a claimed total from an unverified list.

Aberration Explorer Notes

Aberration is included in the canonical story collection and uses its own map-specific locations. The Explorer Map and table are essential here because vertical paths, enclosed areas, and cave-like passages make a surface-only coordinate search unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to search Aberration efficiently

  1. Open the Aberration Explorer Map in the correct game-version context.
  2. Filter to Explorer Notes and inspect the landmark description for each marker.
  3. Sort your checklist by connected travel areas or level changes rather than by latitude alone.
  4. Approach from the route described by the table. If the marker is not visible, search above and below the coordinate before abandoning the entry.
  5. Confirm the pickup in the tracker before moving to the next zone.

Because access can depend on the route into a vertical or enclosed area, bring the equipment and creature mobility that your server permits. The location table tells you where the entry is described; it does not remove the need to solve the map’s physical approach.

Extinction Explorer Notes

Extinction is another story ARK with its own Explorer Note markers and location rows. Build a route from the current Extinction map rather than combining coordinates from unrelated map pages.

Extinction route checklist

  • Choose the Extinction map and edition before exporting or copying any coordinates.
  • Use the topic and author fields to identify the exact entry when several markers are close together.
  • Use the landmark text to decide whether a marker is reached from open terrain, a structure, or an enclosed route.
  • Keep a local list of completed IDs, because revisiting a marker does not tell you which nearby entry is still missing.
  • Check the tracker after every cluster, then move to the next travel zone.

As with every map, the interactive marker is a starting point for navigation. Version changes or altered geometry can move the practical approach even when the published latitude and longitude remain useful.

Handling map-specific access

Genesis maps can organize travel differently from a conventional open-world route. Read the location description for each marker and account for any access condition shown by the map or your server configuration before departing. The official table provides the note’s type, topic, author, coordinates, description, and ID; it does not guarantee that every marker can be reached by the same mount or through the same route.

When a marker is not where expected, verify the map context first, then search the described landmark at different elevations or entrances. Do not mark a note complete until the in-game tracker confirms it.

Genesis: Part 2 Explorer Notes

Genesis: Part 2 is the sixth story ARK in the canonical list. Its Explorer Notes should be collected from the Genesis: Part 2 map context, with coordinates cross-checked against the current location table.

Efficient collection method

  1. Filter the map to Explorer Notes and select a compact group of markers.
  2. Copy each marker’s coordinate and landmark description into a route checklist.
  3. Travel to the coordinate using the mobility option allowed on your server.
  4. Search the nearby structure or terrain described in the table, including vertical approaches when necessary.
  5. Confirm the entry in the tracker and note whether the regular XP effect is active before continuing.

Do not merge Genesis: Part 2 coordinates with Genesis: Part 1 entries. The maps have separate note sets and separate location contexts.

Lost Colony Explorer Notes

Lost Colony is included in the official story-ARK overview. Availability and map access can depend on the game version and the content installed on your platform, so confirm that the map is playable in your edition before planning a collection route.

Checking Lost Colony entries

  • Use the Lost Colony map context and its current Explorer Note markers.
  • Check the location table’s version, coordinate, description, and ID fields where available.
  • Do not substitute coordinates from another ARK map or assume that a marker from a preview, legacy map, or different edition represents the live placement.
  • Use the in-game tracker as the final authority for whether your character has registered the entry.

The official overview does not establish one universal per-map total for the collection. A complete Lost Colony run therefore means confirming every available entry in the current map data and your tracker, not reaching a number copied from an unofficial checklist.

How to build a complete collection route

A good route minimizes backtracking while preserving a reliable record of what has been collected. The following method works for all seven story ARKs.

Prepare before leaving base

  • Confirm map, edition, DLC access, and server rules.
  • Open the matching Explorer Map and location table.
  • Choose a travel method: foot, ground mount, flyer, or another permitted option.
  • Carry the food, water, armor, healing items, and recovery supplies appropriate for the map’s hazards.
  • Create a checklist with map, note type, topic, author, coordinates, landmark, ID, and a completion box.

Run notes in clusters

Select markers that share a region or access route. Collecting nearby notes under one regular Explorer Note Found timer lets you use the double-XP window efficiently. Because regular effects do not stack, the goal is continuous travel and timer refresh, not repeatedly triggering the same multiplier.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify before moving on

Watch for the pickup notification and inspect the tracker. If the tracker does not change, do not assume the marker is complete. Check whether you reached the intended note type, whether the marker is in the correct edition, and whether the object is offset inside a cave or structure.

Finish with a reconciliation pass

Compare your checklist against the tracker by map. Search only the remaining IDs or topics. This is faster and safer than revisiting every marker after a long multi-map expedition.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Administrative commands and alternate access

Normal completion requires physically reaching the note. Server administrators have an alternate option: a third-party command index documents per-note administrative commands and describes the GiveAllExplorerNotes approach. These commands are optional tools for an administrator-controlled server or an appropriately configured single-player game; they are not required for legitimate collection.

Use commands responsibly

  • Enable and use administrator permissions only on a server or save you control.
  • Back up the save before applying a bulk unlock.
  • Confirm that the command syntax matches your game edition and platform; administrative commands can differ between ASE and ASA and between server interfaces.
  • Understand that a bulk command can remove the exploration and route-planning part of the achievement.
  • After running a command, verify the Explorer Note tracker and Survivor-level result rather than assuming every entry registered.

Because command syntax and permissions are edition-dependent, use the current command reference for your exact game and server rather than copying an unverified variation into a live save.

Troubleshooting missing or non-registering notes

The marker is visible, but the note does not trigger

Walk or fly directly through the marker from another direction, search slightly above and below the coordinate, and check the nearby landmark. Cave and structure geometry can put the collectible away from the point shown by an interactive map.

The coordinates lead to the wrong terrain

Verify that the map name and edition match your game. ASE and ASA contexts can differ, and a coordinate copied from one map cannot be assumed to work on another. Reopen the map with the correct context before searching further.

The note appears collected, but the tracker is unchanged

Wait for the pickup notification, then inspect the tracker. If it still does not register, confirm that the object was an Explorer Note rather than a creature record or another collectible, leave the area, reload according to your server’s normal procedure, and try the marker again.

The XP multiplier is not what you expected

A regular note doubles XP for 10 minutes and does not stack with another regular note; another regular pickup extends the expiration. A special Explorer Note Found! effect is associated with She Who Waits notes or single-player settings and quadruples XP. When the two effects overlap, the documented temporary result is eight-times XP. Check which status effects are currently displayed instead of assuming every note grants the special multiplier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are missing a final entry

Compare your checklist by map, topic, and ID against the official location table. Recheck caves, vertical areas, and markers whose descriptions mention a nearby entrance. Then confirm the correct edition and installed map content before attempting a long return trip.

Important limits when using online maps

Interactive maps are powerful navigation aids, but they are not a substitute for version checking or in-game confirmation. The official map index includes many collectible categories, so filtering is essential. Coordinates can be affected by cave geometry, map updates, and edition differences. The official overview also does not provide one authoritative per-map total in the available material; treat any claimed total as edition- and source-dependent unless it is supported by the current location table and your tracker.

For a defensible completion record, save the map URL or page context you used, record the edition, and keep the note ID alongside the coordinate. That makes it possible to diagnose a missing entry after a patch or when moving between ASE and ASA.

Quick completion checklist

  • Use the seven story ARKs as the core collection scope.
  • Keep creature records separate from survivor narrative notes.
  • Match every map marker to your exact ASE or ASA edition.
  • Filter Explorer Maps to Explorer Notes before planning a route.
  • Use latitude, longitude, landmark, and ID together.
  • Reach most notes physically by walking or flying into them.
  • Check the in-game tracker after each pickup.
  • Use regular-note timers to maintain the double-XP effect; do not expect regular effects to stack.
  • Check for the special effect only where the She Who Waits or single-player condition applies.
  • Use administrator commands only as an optional, permission-controlled alternative.
  • Confirm all maps and entries before relying on the 10-level completion reward.
