Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
If ARK: Survival Evolved cannot connect to a server, first determine whether the server is still starting, whether it is visible on the correct query port, or whether the failure is on the client’s network. A newly started server may take about 15 minutes to register. Once the owner confirms registration, try the in-game server list, then a direct connection with open YOUR_IP:7777. On modded servers, allow time for Workshop downloads and repair mismatches by resubscribing and verifying files. If you host the server yourself, check forwarding, firewall rules and possible carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) before changing random ports.
This guide covers ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) connection failures for players and self-hosted administrators. Port behavior can vary by hosting panel, map and launch configuration; the port numbers below come from third-party guides and community reports rather than a verified Studio Wildcard support article, so confirm them against your server’s launch parameters and current documentation.
Start with a five-minute fault-isolation check
Do these checks in order. They separate a server that is not ready from a server that is ready but unreachable, and prevent you from changing client settings unnecessarily.
- Ask whether anyone can connect. If every player fails, treat it as a server, hosting or network-path problem. If one player fails while others join, concentrate on that player’s client and network.
- Confirm the server has finished starting. The process being visible in a control panel is not enough. Watch the server console for its registration or ready message. A 2026 hosting guide says a server can take up to about 15 minutes from process start to appear in a browser.
- Check the correct browser. Search the in-game Unofficial or Favorites lists. The Steam server browser and ARK’s in-game browser use the server’s query port, not the gameplay port.
- Try a direct connection. In ARK, open the console with
Taband enteropen YOUR_IP:7777, replacing the example with the server’s public address and configured game port. - Test locally if you own the server. From a computer on the same home network, connect to the server’s private LAN address. A successful LAN connection points toward port forwarding, CGNAT or another internet-path issue rather than the ARK process itself.
- Read the exact error. “App ID is invalid,” a timeout, an endless loading screen and a missing browser entry have different likely causes. Use the symptom table below instead of applying every fix at once.
What the failure looks like and what it usually means
| Symptom | Most useful first check | Likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Server is absent from the browser immediately after launch | Wait for the console’s registration confirmation, then allow a few more minutes for list propagation | Startup or Steam master-list delay |
| Server appears, but joining times out | Try direct connect and test from the same LAN if you are the owner | Firewall, forwarding, CGNAT or a stalled mod download |
| “App ID is invalid” while joining from Steam | Launch ARK first and join from its Favorites or Unofficial list | Steam client/browser bug |
| Timeout on a modded server | Wait for downloads, retry, then resubscribe to the listed mods and verify game files | Workshop download or version mismatch |
| Only one computer cannot join | Temporarily check firewall/antivirus rules, VPN or proxy, and local game files | Client or local network |
| LAN works but players outside the home cannot join | Recheck forwarding and whether the ISP uses CGNAT | Internet ingress path |
| A port-checking website says “closed” although the server is running | Test an actual ARK connection instead of relying on the scan | Scanner cannot see an application response |
Confirm that the server is really online
Wait for registration, not merely process start
ARK loads the map, initializes mods and then registers with the server list. During that period the process can consume CPU and memory while remaining invisible. Leave the server running, keep the console or panel log open, and look for a registration or ready indication. The approximately 15-minute figure is a practical upper estimate from a 2026 hosting guide, not a guaranteed deadline; a heavily modded map, slow storage or a busy host can take longer.

If the log repeatedly restarts, exits, reports a missing mod or shows an error instead of progressing, fix that error first. A browser entry cannot appear reliably while the game process is crashing or restarting.
Allow for master-list propagation
Even after registration, Steam’s master server list may take a couple of minutes to display a freshly started server. Refreshing constantly can make the list look inconsistent. Wait briefly, refresh once, and compare the result with the in-game Unofficial list or a direct connection.

Search by the complete session name, map filter and password setting. An owner who changed the name, map or “Unofficial” filter can make a healthy server appear missing. Clear a stale Favorites entry and add the current listing again after registration.
Understand ARK’s ports before changing them
Third-party hosting documentation commonly distinguishes a gameplay port from a query port:
| Purpose | Common value reported by guides | What it affects | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | UDP 7777 | Player connections and direct joins such as open IP:7777 |
Reported by a third-party guide; confirm against the server’s launch configuration |
| Additional game port | 7778 | Often configured as the next game port | Forwarding is described as optional in some guides and required in some hosting setups; do not assume |
| Query traffic | UDP 27015 | In-game and Steam browser lookups | Reported by a third-party guide; the actual query port may be changed by the host or panel |
Community discussions do not agree on one universal rule. One thread says the required ports are configuration-dependent; another reports a port-and-port-plus-one arrangement working for some users; another suggests opening both TCP and UDP for 27015 and 7777. These are unverified reports from older discussions, not a definitive ASE standard. Use the ports printed by your server panel or launch command, and open only the protocols that configuration requires. Do not forward SFTP or RCON ports unless you intentionally need external access to those services.
Join through the least fragile method
In-game Unofficial or Favorites list
- Start ARK normally and wait at the main menu.
- Choose Join ARK.
- Set the session filter to Unofficial when appropriate.
- Search the exact server name, select the entry and add it to Favorites if you use it regularly.
- If it was just started, wait through the registration and master-list delays before concluding it is offline.
This method avoids some Steam-browser handoff problems and is the recommended workaround when Steam reports that the app ID is invalid.
Steam browser and Favorites
The Steam browser looks up ARK servers through the query port. If the owner forwarded only the gameplay port, the server can be running while the browser cannot discover it. Check the configured query port rather than assuming 27015 is correct, especially when several servers share one machine.
Direct connection
Direct connection bypasses discovery. In the ARK main menu, press Tab, type open YOUR_IP:7777, and press Enter. Replace YOUR_IP with the public address and 7777 with the configured gameplay port. Do not include brackets or quotation marks. A direct join can succeed while the server is absent from the master list; that indicates a discovery or query-port issue, not necessarily a gameplay-port failure.
LAN connection
For a self-hosted server, use its private address from another device on the same router. If LAN joining succeeds, the ARK process and local game settings are likely functional. Focus on the router’s forwarding, the host firewall and CGNAT. If LAN joining also fails, inspect the server log, local firewall and launch parameters before troubleshooting the ISP.
Fix “App ID is invalid” and Steam handoff errors
Community guidance describes “app ID is invalid” as a Steam client bug rather than proof that the server’s application is corrupt. The practical workaround is:

- Ark graphics and worlds are completely recreated and designed to use the latest video game technology, Unreal Engine 5
- Advanced new physical systems such as dynamic water and fully interactive physical leaves
- Design your survivor, shape the trunk and tame, train, multiply and ride dinosaurs in a vivid ecosystem
- Public online mode for up to 70 players, private multiplayer mode for up to 8 players + local split screen for 2 players
- Close any failed join dialog.
- Launch ARK directly and wait until its main menu is loaded.
- Open Join ARK and use the Unofficial or Favorites list.
- If the server is not listed, use the direct
open IP:portcommand.
Restart Steam and ARK if the handoff remains stuck. Avoid repeatedly launching a server link while ARK is still closed; that reproduces the same handoff path.
Handle mod downloads and mismatches
Modded servers can appear to time out while the client is downloading a large Workshop item. Leave the connection attempt running long enough to determine whether download progress is occurring, then retry once. A genuine mismatch commonly produces a failed load after the download rather than an immediate browser error.
Repair the client’s mod state
- Exit ARK completely.
- In Steam Workshop, unsubscribe from the server’s required mods, then subscribe again. This forces Steam to rebuild the local subscription list.
- Allow each item to finish downloading before launching ARK.
- In Steam, open the game’s properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and ARK, then join again from the in-game Unofficial list or by direct connection.
Ask the server owner for the current mod list and load order if the server recently changed. The owner should also restart the server after a mod update so that the running process and Workshop files agree. Do not delete arbitrary folders while the server is live; preserve save and configuration backups first.
Recognize a server-side mod failure
If every player times out or receives the same mod error after resubscribing and verifying files, the owner should inspect the server log for a failed download, missing item or incompatible update. A client cannot repair a mod that the server has not installed correctly.

Firewall and antivirus
Allow ARK and its related processes through the operating system firewall on the network profile you actually use. If security software has quarantined or blocked an executable, restore it only after confirming the file is the legitimate Steam installation. A temporary test with the firewall disabled can isolate the cause, but re-enable protection immediately and create a narrow allow rule instead of leaving it off.

VPNs, proxies and router state
Disable a VPN or proxy for one connection attempt. These services can change the route, address or UDP handling and make a server appear unreachable. Restart the router and modem after recording any custom settings. If other online games work but ARK does not, continue with ARK-specific firewall and file checks; if several services fail, investigate the home connection first.
Repair local files
Use Steam’s file-verification tool when ARK crashes, rejects a connection after an update or behaves differently from other players. Verification replaces damaged files but does not automatically resolve every Workshop subscription problem, so complete the mod repair steps separately when the server is modded.

Forward the ports that your configuration actually uses
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page.
- Give the host computer a stable private address through a DHCP reservation or a manual LAN address.
- Create rules for the configured ARK gameplay port and query port, using the protocol shown by the server panel or launch parameters.
- Add the additional game port only when the server configuration or hosting instructions require it.
- Point every rule to the host computer’s private address, not the public address.
- Allow the same traffic through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Restart the server and test from a device outside the home network, such as a phone hotspot.
Forwarding a port that is not used by the running process cannot make the server reachable. Conversely, forwarding management services that do not need public access increases exposure without fixing player joins.
Check for CGNAT
Carrier-grade NAT places the router behind an ISP-owned private address. In that arrangement, a home router rule can be correct and LAN connections can work, yet unsolicited internet traffic never reaches the server. Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by a reputable “what is my IP” service. If the router shows a private or carrier-range address, ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address, a static address or an appropriate hosting option. Port forwarding alone cannot bypass CGNAT.
Do not trust a port checker by itself
A port-checking site may report “closed” while the ARK server is running because many scanners mark a port open only when the destination application answers their particular probe. ARK’s UDP behavior and server state can produce no response to a generic scan. Use an actual external ARK join attempt and the server log as the decisive test.

Server-owner diagnostic sequence
When players report that a self-hosted server is unreachable, collect the following evidence before changing settings:
- Server start time and whether the process stayed running.
- The exact registration or ready message in the console.
- Configured map, session name, gameplay port and query port.
- Whether a player on the same LAN can join.
- Whether an external player can use the direct command.
- Firewall and router rule screenshots or exported settings, with public addresses redacted.
- Whether the ISP connection uses CGNAT.
- Any mod download, load-order or version errors in the server log.
Use the results to narrow the fault: no registration means server startup; LAN failure means the host or local firewall; LAN success with external failure means forwarding or CGNAT; direct-join success with browser failure means query or master-list discovery; one-player failure means that player’s client or network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecovery paths for the most common cases
The server is new and nobody can see it
Keep it running through the full startup period, confirm registration in the console, wait several minutes for list propagation, then search the correct Unofficial filter. If it still does not appear, test the direct command and verify the query port.
Everyone sees the server but nobody can join
Try a direct join, then test from the owner’s LAN. Inspect gameplay-port forwarding, host firewall rules and any mod download stall. If LAN works, investigate CGNAT or the router’s WAN address.
Only one player is affected
Have that player launch ARK first, use the in-game list, disable VPN or proxy use, check firewall permissions and verify files. For a modded server, resubscribe to the required Workshop items and wait for completion before retrying.
A port change made the problem worse
Restore the last known working launch parameters, remove duplicate forwarding rules and ensure the browser is searching the matching query port. Because community advice conflicts on exact port combinations, changing several ports simultaneously makes the result harder to interpret.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact the host or ISP
Escalate with the server log and the results of LAN, direct and external tests when the process repeatedly crashes, the host panel shows a registration failure, the WAN address indicates CGNAT, or forwarding works for other applications but not ARK. Give the host or ISP the exact time of a failed attempt and the public source network; avoid sending passwords, RCON credentials or full private-network details.
Older community discussions, including posts from 2015–2017, describe client behavior and port arrangements that may not match a current ASE installation. Treat them as troubleshooting clues, not universal specifications. Current launch parameters, panel documentation and observable server logs should take precedence.
