To breed creatures in ARK, place two compatible parents of the same species within mating range, enable mating, and complete the resulting egg incubation or mammal gestation. The offspring then inherits each natural stat from one parent, with a 55% chance per stat of receiving the higher parental value. Raise the newborn and complete its care requests to imprint it; full imprinting can increase its base stats by 20% and can grant the imprinter up to 30% more damage and damage resistance while riding it.

Reliable breeding is less about producing one baby than about recording natural stat points, separating imprint bonuses from inherited values, and controlling mutation counters. The workflow below applies to the standard ARK breeding system; mating, maturation and imprint intervals can differ with server settings and events.

What ARK breeding actually changes

Breeding creates a new creature from two parents rather than taming a wild animal. Non-mammalian species produce a fertilized egg that must be incubated. Mammals carry the baby through gestation. Once the egg hatches or the gestation ends, you can claim the newborn directly; it does not go through the wild-creature taming process.

The important distinction is between natural inherited stats and bonuses added later. The offspring’s breeding value is based on the parents’ natural stat points. Player-applied level-ups on a parent are not inherited. Imprinting changes the raised baby’s bonuses, but it does not rewrite the natural stat values you should record for a breeding line.

Prepare compatible parents

Use this checklist before you activate mating:

  • Same species: both creatures must be the same breedable species. Original, Tek, Aberrant, X and R variants are treated as separate species for breeding, so a standard creature cannot breed with its variant.
  • Opposite sex: normal mating requires a male and a female.
  • Mating enabled: enable mating on both creatures (or use the server’s equivalent wandering setting where applicable).
  • Within range: keep the parents close enough for the mating status to activate.
  • Free to mate: neither parent should be following another target or be blocked by a conflicting behavior state.
  • Able to move: immobilization, obstruction or a position that prevents the game from registering proximity can stop the cycle.

For a breeding operation, park parents in a secure, uncluttered pen. Leave enough room to separate the female, eggs and newborns; a crowded pen makes it easier to miss a birth, care request or egg that needs incubation.

How to start mating

  1. Choose and identify the parents. Confirm species and variant, sex, and the natural stats you want to preserve. Do not use a parent whose important numbers come only from post-tame level-ups.
  2. Bring the pair together. Move them into mating range on level ground and remove obstacles between them.
  3. Enable mating on both creatures. Check that neither is set to follow another creature and that both can move.
  4. Watch for the mating state. Stay nearby until the game confirms mating. If the status disappears, check range and behavior settings before trying again.
  5. Handle the result by species. Collect and incubate a fertilized egg for egg-laying species. For mammals, protect the female through gestation and prepare a safe area for the birth.
  6. Claim the newborn immediately when practical. The baby is claimed directly rather than tamed as a wild creature. Add it to your breeding records before assigning it a role or applying level-ups.

If mating will not start

  • Recheck that both creatures are the same variant; visually similar original and variant lines are not interchangeable.
  • Toggle mating off and on, then place the pair closer together.
  • Stop following behavior and remove movement restrictions that keep one parent from reaching the other.
  • Verify that the server has not disabled breeding for the area, species or game mode.

Egg incubation and mammal gestation

Fertilized eggs

An egg-laying parent produces a fertilized egg after a successful mating cycle. Move the egg to the appropriate incubation setup for your species and monitor the in-game timer. Temperature, incubation speed and hatch timing depend on the server’s settings, so the timer shown in your game is the authoritative schedule for that server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gestating mammals

A mammal carries the offspring instead of producing an item you can pick up. Keep the female protected until the birth notification appears, then claim the baby and begin its maturation care. Do not assume that an egg-based routine, storage layout or timer applies to a gestating species.

How natural stat inheritance works

For every natural stat, the baby takes the value from one parent. The higher parental value has a 55% chance of being selected for that stat; the lower value is selected in the remaining cases. The roll is made separately for each stat, so a single baby can inherit the father’s health and melee values but the mother’s weight and stamina values.

Because each stat is rolled independently, “the better parent” is not one creature for the whole baby. A parent with excellent health can still contribute the lower stamina value, while the other parent supplies the stronger weight value. Breed by checking each stat, not by comparing only the parents’ overall level.

Record points, not the displayed level alone

Maintain a record for every breeder that includes the natural points or values for health, stamina, oxygen, food, weight, melee and any species-specific stats you care about. The creature’s displayed level can include tamed-level increases and other changes that are not useful for selecting inherited breeding values.

When a baby arrives, compare its natural values with both parents and mark which parent supplied each stat. Do this before spending level-up points. A clean record lets you identify the strongest combination and prevents you from mistaking a later training bonus for a heritable improvement.

A simple inheritance example

Suppose the male has the higher natural health value and the female has the higher natural weight value. The baby has a 55% chance to receive the male’s higher health value and a 55% chance to receive the female’s higher weight value. Those rolls do not influence one another. A different baby from the same pair can receive a different combination even though the parents have not changed.

The 55% figure applies to the higher natural parental value. It does not apply to points added by a player’s level-ups, and it does not include the later imprint bonus.

Imprinting: care requests and bonuses

Imprinting is the maturation process in which the baby asks its caregiver for specific interactions. The ARK Official Community Wiki describes it as a way to improve the stat values of a bred creature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The three care interactions

During maturation, the baby presents one of three request types:

  • Requested food: provide the food the prompt asks for.
  • Cuddling: interact with the baby when the cuddle request becomes available.
  • Walking: follow the prompt and walk the baby as required.

Requests appear on the server’s maturation schedule. Server rates and special events can shorten or lengthen the time between requests, so use the current in-game countdown rather than a guide’s fixed interval.

What full imprinting provides

Effect Amount How to interpret it
Base-stat increase at full imprint 20% Applied to the raised creature’s base stats when imprinting is completed.
Ridden damage and damage resistance for the imprinter Up to 30% Applies when the creature is ridden by the player who imprinted it; it is not a universal bonus for every rider.

These bonuses are applied to the raised creature and its use in combat. Keep them separate from the natural stat record used to select future breeders. A heavily imprinted animal can be an excellent fighter while still having ordinary inherited points.

Can another player finish the imprinting?

Under default settings, only the player who claimed the newborn can imprint it. Arrange ownership and caregiving before the birth if a specific player needs the rider bonus. Server configuration can alter gameplay behavior, so confirm the rule on a private or modified server rather than assuming default behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for missed requests

A missed request can reduce the final imprint percentage. Keep the baby in a protected area, check the countdown regularly, and avoid starting a maturation cycle when no one can respond. If your server uses accelerated maturation, the time available for each request may be much shorter than on official rates.

Mutation breeding without losing control

Mutations can change a random stat and a color outcome. They are useful for developing a specialized line, but they also add a mutation counter that must be tracked on the breeding ancestry. The official mutation documentation discusses separated and combined approaches; whichever approach you choose, maintain a written record of counters and inherited stats.

Build a clean stat line first

Before pursuing mutations, consolidate the best natural values you already have. Keep a clear male and female line, label every offspring, and avoid applying level-ups to animals intended as breeders. This gives you a known baseline so a new stat or color can be identified as a mutation rather than an undocumented inheritance change.

Track both sides of the ancestry

For every potential breeder, record:

  • Species and variant.
  • Natural points for each relevant stat.
  • Parent identifiers.
  • Mutation counters shown in the ancestry.
  • Color changes and the generation in which they appeared.
  • Whether the animal is reserved for breeding, combat or display.

Do not discard a useful stat simply because the animal has an unattractive color, or keep a color mutation while forgetting which natural stat it replaced. Separate stat goals from color goals in your records so you can make an intentional choice.

Separated and combined approaches

Approach Natural-stat consistency Mutation-counter management Maturation and imprint timing Facility demand Level-cap exposure
Stat consolidation without deliberate mutations Highest consistency once the best values are combined in a clean pair. Lowest complexity; counters remain easy to audit. Uses the server’s normal hatch or gestation and maturation timers. Moderate; a small number of females can support a controlled line. Lowest, because you are not intentionally stacking mutation levels.
Separated mutation lines Preserves a clear baseline while developing one target at a time. Requires separate counter and stat records for each line. More cycles are needed, so missed care windows become more costly. Higher; additional females and holding space make parallel lines practical. Rises as mutation levels accumulate; monitor the server’s limits.
Combined mutation line Can combine several finished targets, but parent selection is easier to confuse. Most demanding: verify both ancestry counters and every inherited stat before each pairing. Longest overall schedule when multiple targets are merged. Highest space requirement if you keep backup breeders and parallel offspring. Highest; official-server level caps can stop further stacking or make offspring unusable for the intended role.

The table describes planning trade-offs, not guaranteed outcomes. Your practical choice depends on how many females your facility can support, how carefully you can label offspring, and how much time your server’s maturation rates allow.

Watch official level limits

Mutation stacking increases offspring levels. Official servers impose level limits, so a line can eventually reach a point where further mutations push babies beyond the usable cap. Check the current cap for your mode and server before investing in a long mutation chain. Keep a lower-level clean line as a fallback when a heavily stacked line approaches the limit.

Twins, triplets and unexpected multiples

The official breeding page lists a 10% chance of twins and a 2% chance of triplets. Treat each birth or hatch as a possible multiple-baby event: have enough food, claiming capacity and shelter ready before the timer ends. Multiples also create more records to label, so pause before spending level-up points and document each baby’s natural stats separately.

Design a facility that supports the numbers

Space and female count become the limiting factors once you move from occasional breeding to a production line. Compare your setup against these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many females can you keep within mating range? More females increase potential cycles but also increase the number of eggs, gestations and babies that need attention.
  • Can you separate lines? Keep clean breeders, mutation candidates and combat-ready animals in clearly marked areas.
  • Can you see every baby? Hidden corners and stacked structures make it easy to miss a care request or a newborn that needs food.
  • Do you have storage and labeling? Use consistent names or tags for generation, stat focus, mutation counter and intended parent.
  • Can you respond at the server’s rate? Faster maturation compresses imprint windows; slower rates require longer protection and food planning.

For a small operation, one carefully documented pair is easier to audit than a crowded pen. Expand only when your records, food supply and caregiver schedule can handle the additional offspring.

Common breeding mistakes and fixes

Using the wrong variant

Symptom: two creatures look similar but never mate. Fix: verify that both are the same original, Tek, Aberrant, X or R line. Variants count as separate species for breeding.

Expecting level-ups to pass to babies

Symptom: a parent’s trained stat is absent in the offspring. Fix: select breeders using recorded natural values, not the current level after player-applied points.

Calling an imprinted stat a mutation

Symptom: a raised baby appears stronger, but its ancestry does not show the expected inherited value. Fix: compare the baby’s natural points before imprint bonuses and keep the imprint percentage in a separate field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another player cannot complete care

Symptom: a helper performs a request but receives no imprint credit. Fix: under default settings, the claimant is the player who must imprint the baby. Plan claimant ownership before birth and verify any server-specific configuration.

Mutation records no longer make sense

Symptom: you cannot tell which line supplied a stat or why the counter increased. Fix: stop breeding the unclear animals, return to the last documented pair, and label every offspring’s stats, colors and ancestry before continuing.

The breeding timer does not match a guide

Symptom: incubation, gestation or care intervals differ from published examples. Fix: trust the timer displayed in your game. Server settings and events can change mating, maturation and imprint intervals, and the official wiki notes that some breeding information still needs ARK: Survival Ascended updates.

A repeatable record-keeping workflow

  1. Create a parent card for each breeder with species variant, sex, natural stat points and mutation counters.
  2. After every hatch or birth, record the baby’s values before applying any level-ups.
  3. Mark which parent supplied each stat and flag any new color or mutation result.
  4. Assign a clear role: clean breeder, mutation candidate, imprint-only combat animal or non-breeding stock.
  5. Schedule care around the server’s current maturation timer and note the claimant responsible for imprinting.
  6. Review level limits before combining lines, especially when several mutations have accumulated.

This process turns breeding from trial and error into a controlled selection program: compatible parents produce the baby, independent inheritance rolls determine its natural baseline, imprinting improves the raised animal, and disciplined records determine whether the next generation is actually better.
