Argentina has two relevant naturalization routes: an ordinary route requiring two years of continuous, legal residence, and a separate route for people whose investment qualifies under criteria set by the Ministry of Economy. The investment route has no stated minimum residence period, but official sources reviewed do not establish an investment threshold, total fees, or an end-to-end timeline. Neither route is a guaranteed or instant path to citizenship.
How the two routes differ
In this comparison, “residency” means qualifying residence used to apply for naturalization—not citizenship itself. Argentina’s Citizenship Law 346 provides an ordinary residence-based route and a separate route based on a relevant investment.
| Question | Ordinary naturalization | Relevant-investment naturalization |
|---|---|---|
| Core requirement | Applicant is over 18 and proves legal, continuous residence in Argentina for the two years immediately before applying. | Applicant proves an investment that qualifies as relevant under Ministry of Economy criteria; the law does not state a minimum residence period for this route. |
| Must the applicant live in Argentina first? | Yes. The statutory period is two years, with continuity defined as remaining in Argentina throughout that period without leaving the country. | No minimum residence duration appears in the investment provision. |
| Investment requirement | None is stated for this route. | Required, but the Ministry of Economy sets the qualifying criteria and may identify specific projects. |
| Decision process | Migration administers naturalization. A government announcement describes an online filing channel for eligible applicants. | The Agency for Investment Citizenship Programs assesses the investment and gathers reports before sending a recommendation to Migration. |
| Timing established in law | Two years is the qualifying residence period before filing, not a total application-to-citizenship estimate. | Migration has 30 business days to decide after it receives the agency’s report; this is not the full processing timeline. |
| Current total cost established in reviewed official sources | Not stated; see the Migration service information for current fees. | Not stated; neither a total fee nor an official investment threshold was established. |
The controlling texts are Citizenship Law 346, as amended by Decree 366/2025, and Decree 524/2025. The rules described here are Argentina’s national rules.
How long must you live in Argentina before applying?
For the ordinary route, the law requires an applicant to be at least 18 and to have resided legally and continuously in Argentina for the two years immediately preceding the application. It defines continuous residence strictly: the applicant must have remained in Argentina for the entire period without making any trip abroad. Do not treat this as a “mostly resident” test or assume that brief travel is allowed.
#1 Best Overall
The two-year period is a pre-application eligibility requirement, not a promise that the full naturalization process will finish within two years. The official material reviewed does not specify an overall processing time after filing.
How much must you invest—and what does the application involve?
The investment provision allows a naturalization application without a stated minimum residence period, but it does not itself set a qualifying investment amount. The Ministry of Economy determines what counts as a relevant investment and may designate projects. The official government announcement confirms that the Ministry sets the criteria and that an agency assesses applications, but it does not publish a threshold.
Rank #2
- Apply to the Agency for Investment Citizenship Programs. The application must establish the proposed investment for assessment under Ministry of Economy rules.
- Wait for the agency’s assessment. If the investment qualifies, the agency requests reports from relevant authorities, including security, financial-intelligence, criminal-record, and identity bodies.
- Agency sends a reasoned recommendation to Migration. An adverse investment assessment or negative recommendation leads the agency to propose rejection.
- Migration makes the decision. Under Decree 524/2025, Migration must issue a reasoned approval or rejection within 30 business days after receiving the agency’s report.
That 30-business-day clock applies only to Migration’s decision stage. It does not include the time needed for the agency’s assessment, reports, or other parts of the process, and the reviewed official sources do not give a complete application-to-citizenship estimate.
What are the costs of residency or citizenship?
Current total application costs were not established in the official sources reviewed. Those sources also do not provide an official investment minimum or an aggregate cost for the investment route. An investment amount, if required for a particular qualifying project, should not be confused with government filing fees or other case-specific expenses.
Rank #3
For a current fee figure, check the relevant Argentina.gob.ar service information before filing. The official Migration FAQ addresses costs, but the reviewed material did not provide a current total. Do not rely on commercial estimates as if they were official criteria or fees.
What rights do residents and citizens have?
“Residency” is not a single status. Temporary, permanent, and precarious residence have different legal functions, so rights cannot be compared as though every foreign resident has the same access or permissions. The migration reforms changed some health-care and public higher-education access rules for people who are not permanent residents. Government material also says emergency health care and basic education remain available.
Rank #4
A precarious authorization is a temporary permission that may, while valid, allow a person to stay, enter and exit, work, and study. It is not itself a grant of permanent residence or citizenship, and it does not count as valid residence for establishing roots for permanent residence or naturalization. It also does not guarantee that a naturalization application will be approved.

Which route fits your situation?
- Consider the ordinary route if you can meet the two-year legal-residence requirement and remain in Argentina throughout that qualifying period.
- Consider whether the investment route applies only if you can establish an investment that meets current Ministry of Economy criteria and satisfy the agency review. The existence of the route does not make every investment eligible.
- Get case-specific legal advice if travel during the qualifying period, immigration category, prior records, or the nature of an investment could affect eligibility.
Before acting, confirm current filing instructions and fees through official Argentina.gob.ar information. The digital filing channel described in a government announcement is for foreign-born adults holding temporary or permanent residence who meet the naturalization requirements; confirm that the online process and eligibility conditions remain current for your case.
