Wombats are not usually dangerous when people keep their distance, but they are strong wild animals that can bite or scratch severely if they feel threatened, are injured, or are defending a territory. The safest response is simple: do not touch, feed, chase, corner, or enter a wombat’s burrow; keep dogs and other pets away; and call a trained wildlife rescue service about an injured or orphaned animal.
How dangerous are wombats in an ordinary encounter?
Most people see wombats briefly, often around dawn or dusk, while the animal is moving between grazing areas and a burrow. South Australia’s environment department says wombats spend much of the day in warrens and are generally observed from a distance. A wombat that is moving normally and has a clear route away from you is usually best left alone.
That low-risk situation should not be confused with harmlessness. Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment warns: “Wombats are wild animals and although they look cute and cuddly, they can bite and scratch severely, especially when injured, afraid or defending their territory.” The Australian Museum describes attacks as rare, but no reliable national attack rate is established. A rare event can still cause a serious injury when a person or pet gets close enough for defensive contact.

| Situation | Practical risk | Safest response |
|---|---|---|
| Wombat moving normally at a distance | Usually low if nobody blocks or pursues it | Watch quietly and allow it to leave |
| Person approaches, touches, feeds, or corners it | Higher chance of a defensive bite or scratch | Back away and leave a clear escape route |
| Wombat is injured, orphaned, trapped, or unusually exposed | Stress and handling can trigger defensive behavior; disease transmission is also possible | Keep people and pets back and call trained rescuers |
| Person or dog follows it into a burrow | Entrances can become dangerous because the wombat may brace with its rump | Never enter or pursue an animal underground |
Wombats are substantial animals. South Australia’s species overview gives an average length of about one metre and a weight of 20–32 kilograms for the two species found in that state. Those figures describe typical animals, not a prediction of how aggressive an individual will be.

What to do when you see a wombat
1. Stop and create space
Remain still long enough to judge where the wombat is going. Move slowly away rather than walking toward it. Do not stand between the animal and its burrow, a road crossing, or another apparent escape route. Children should stay beside an adult, not approach for a photograph.
2. Do not touch or feed it
Feeding can bring a wild animal closer to people and pets and can make later encounters harder to manage. Touching a wombat, even when it appears calm, removes the distance that protects both sides. There is no need to handle a healthy animal that is simply passing through.
3. Let it choose the route
Wombats often retreat when they sense danger. Keep voices low, call dogs back, and wait for the animal to move. Do not block the entrance to a warren or use a vehicle, object, or person to force it in a particular direction.

4. Leave if it shows defensive behavior
Back away immediately if the wombat faces you, rushes forward, vocalizes, or appears unable to escape. Do not test whether it is “bluffing,” try to stroke it, or attempt to take a close-up image. A safe observation is one in which the animal can depart without contact.

Can wombats hurt dogs or other pets?
Official sources do not provide a pet-specific injury rate or a measured comparison between wombat attacks on dogs and other wildlife. They do establish that wombats are powerful and can inflict severe bites and scratches on people. It is therefore prudent to treat a close encounter as a potential injury risk for a dog or other pet, without claiming that wombats routinely attack pets.
- Keep dogs on a lead where wombats are present, especially at night and near known warrens.
- Call a dog back before it reaches, chases, sniffs, or corners a wombat.
- Do not allow a dog to follow a wombat into a burrow or squeeze into an opening.
- If a pet has been bitten or scratched, separate it from the animal and seek veterinary advice promptly. Do not put your hands between an actively defending wombat and a dog.
A dog that is barking or lunging can prevent a wombat from retreating, increasing the chance of a defensive response. Controlling the pet is safer than trying to drive the wombat away.
What to do about an injured, orphaned, or distressed wombat
Do not attempt a home rescue
Tasmanian wildlife guidance says to contact a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation service rather than attempting care yourself. NSW rescue guidance warns that handling can cause bites or scratches and may expose people to disease. Adult wombats require experienced personnel and suitable equipment.

Call the correct local service
There is no single universal Australian rescue number established for every state and territory. Use the wildlife authority or a recognized rescue and rehabilitation service for the state where you found the animal. Give the exact location, nearby roads or landmarks, the animal’s apparent condition, and whether people, dogs, traffic, or a burrow create an immediate hazard.
Keep the scene quiet
Move spectators away and keep pets secured. If it is safe to do so, observe from a distance until rescuers arrive, but do not surround the wombat or repeatedly approach to check it.
Why entering a wombat burrow is dangerous
Never enter or pursue a wombat into a burrow. Tasmania’s wildlife authority warns that a wombat may brace its bony rump against the roof or entrance. A person or dog leaning into a confined opening could be bitten, scratched, trapped, or struck while the animal defends itself. Burrows can also be extensive, unstable, and difficult to navigate.

Wombats near a house, garden, or driveway
A wombat near a property does not automatically require intervention. First remove immediate pressures: bring pets indoors or onto a lead, keep children away, and stop people from gathering around the animal. Leave an unobstructed route to cover and avoid digging, filling, fencing across, or otherwise disturbing an active burrow.
Burrow and wildlife protections differ by jurisdiction. NSW guidance states that only inactive burrows may be bulldozed and warns that destroying an active burrow can bury wombats alive. It also explains that harm to wombats may require a licence and that trapping and relocation are not permitted under the guidance described there. South Australia protects wombats and requires a permit to destroy burrows inside designated Wombat Burrow Protection Zones. These rules should not be generalized to every Australian state or territory; contact the applicable local wildlife or environment authority before changing a burrow or using control work.
If a burrow threatens a building, road, or utility, document the location and ask the local authority for a lawful solution. Do not improvise a capture or relocation plan.

Wombats are active at night and can be difficult for drivers to see. South Australia’s environment department also warns that shallow or unstable burrows may collapse under people or vehicles. In low light, reduce speed in areas marked or known for wombats, scan the road edges, and expect an animal to emerge suddenly. Avoid stopping in a live traffic lane to watch one; pull over only where it is legal and safe.

If a wombat bites or scratches you
- Move away without making further contact. Secure children and pets at a safe distance.
- Wash the wound with warm water and soap or use a suitable disinfectant.
- Seek medical advice, particularly for a deep puncture, heavy bleeding, injury to the hand, face, or eye, or any sign of infection.
- Tell medical staff that you handled or were injured by wildlife. Ask whether your tetanus vaccination needs updating.
Apply firm pressure with clean material for serious bleeding while arranging urgent medical care. Do not try to catch the wombat so that it can be “tested,” and do not delay treatment while searching for the animal.
What trained rescuers use—and what ordinary visitors should not do
NSW rescue guidance lists robust clothing, covered shoes, personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, and appropriate equipment for trained handling. It also notes that binoculars can help with a distance assessment. Those instructions are for rescue contexts, not an invitation for untrained visitors to capture a wombat.

A quick decision checklist
- Healthy and moving normally: watch from a distance and let it pass.
- Close to people or pets: retreat, secure pets, and clear its route.
- Injured, orphaned, trapped, or distressed: do not handle; call trained wildlife rescuers.
- Inside or near a burrow: never enter, block, dig into, or pursue it.
- Burrow affecting property: check state or territory rules before any disturbance.
- After a bite or scratch: clean the wound, obtain medical advice, and report wildlife contact to clinicians.
Bottom line on wombat safety
Wombats are generally safe to observe when people stay back, but they are not tame animals. Their size, strength, and defensive bites or scratches make close contact unnecessary and risky. Give every wombat an escape route, keep dogs away, stay out of burrows, and refer injured or orphaned animals to trained local rescuers.
