Windows 11 is not known to “kill” SSDs through its default maintenance. The operating system detects solid-state drives and uses TRIM/retrim rather than repeatedly running the disk defragmentation routine designed for hard drives. The settings worth reviewing are those that create genuine storage pressure or unusually heavy writes—not every feature that touches your disk.
What Windows 11 actually does to an SSD
Windows 11’s scheduled drive maintenance is normally weekly. For a hard disk, optimization can mean traditional defragmentation. For an SSD, Windows sends TRIM (also called retrim in scheduled maintenance), which tells the drive which blocks are no longer needed so the controller can prepare them for future writes.
Microsoft describes TRIM as telling an SSD where it can safely perform cleanup when the drive is idle, rather than defragmenting flash storage in the same way as a mechanical disk. That distinction matters: the old advice to disable every scheduled optimization job on an SSD treats two different operations as if they were identical.

Which settings deserve attention?
| Windows feature | What it does | Practical treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Removes selected temporary files, Recycle Bin items and other content according to your schedule and choices. | Keep it when free space is tight; review its deletion categories. |
| Optimize Drives | Runs scheduled maintenance, including SSD TRIM/retrim and HDD defragmentation. | Leave enabled unless you are troubleshooting a specific hardware or driver issue. |
| Windows Search indexing | Builds a local index so searches can return files and content quickly. | Use scoped exclusions if indexing causes measurable activity; a lifespan benefit from disabling it globally is unproven. |
Storage Sense: a space-management tool, not a wear switch
Storage Sense can run daily, weekly, monthly or when Windows detects low free space. Its cleanup can include temporary files and Recycle Bin items. Downloads and cloud files are not removed by the default configuration unless you select those options. It operates on the system drive.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
To inspect it, open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense. Turn the feature on or off, choose the run schedule, and expand each category before allowing automatic deletion. If the problem is a nearly full system drive, retaining Storage Sense is usually more useful than disabling it: reclaiming space reduces write and update pressure.
Optimize Drives: do not confuse TRIM with defragmentation
Open Start, type Defragment and Optimize Drives, and select the result. The window identifies each drive and shows its media type. An SSD may display an “OK” status after a retrim operation; that is not evidence that Windows has performed a harmful HDD-style defrag.

Windows schedules optimization once a week by default. Microsoft’s command documentation separates SSD retrim behavior from traditional defragmentation. Unless a storage vendor or support technician has identified a specific compatibility problem, disabling the entire schedule removes a useful maintenance function without established endurance gains.

Windows Search keeps its index data locally. Indexing can generate writes when files change, but the available Microsoft guidance does not quantify a typical SSD-life extension from disabling it. The right question is whether indexing is causing a problem on your workload.

For targeted control, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows > Advanced indexing options. Use Modify to remove large, constantly changing folders, or adjust indexed file types. Excluding a build, cache or archive directory can reduce activity while preserving fast searches for documents and applications. Turning indexing off globally also removes or degrades convenient content searches, so treat it as a troubleshooting choice rather than an SSD-preservation rule.
Why free space matters more than most toggle guides
Microsoft warns that a drive running out of space can slow the PC and make Windows updates difficult to install. Limited storage and background processes are common contributors to sluggish performance. A nearly full SSD has fewer spare blocks available for the controller’s housekeeping and leaves less room for temporary files and update staging, regardless of which Windows switches are enabled.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
There is no authoritative Microsoft percentage target in the available guidance that guarantees longer SSD life. Do not treat 10%, 20% or 30% as a universal rule. Instead, avoid the low-storage condition, monitor the capacity warning in Settings > System > Storage, and follow the endurance and over-provisioning recommendations for your particular SSD model.
Safe ways to recover capacity
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review Temporary files, Installed apps and other large categories.
- Run Storage Sense after checking its cleanup selections.
- Use Windows Disk Cleanup for legacy temporary files and system cleanup categories.
- Move or remove large files you no longer need, and uninstall applications you do not use.
- Keep enough working room for updates instead of waiting for Windows to report critically low space.
How to decide whether a change is worthwhile
Before changing a default, observe the symptom and compare the trade-off:
Best Value

- Measure the pressure. Check free capacity and use Task Manager or Resource Monitor to see whether disk activity is sustained.
- Identify the source. Determine whether cleanup, indexing, updates, an application cache or a failing drive is responsible.
- Choose the smallest change. Exclude one indexing location or adjust one Storage Sense category before disabling a whole service.
- Check what you lose. A change may reduce writes but also remove search results, automatic cleanup or update headroom.
- Revert if the symptom remains. If performance does not improve, restore the setting and investigate the workload or hardware.
When settings are not the answer
Windows tweaks cannot restore worn NAND flash, increase a drive’s rated endurance or repair a controller that is failing. If the SSD’s health indicator reports degradation, back up important data immediately and plan a replacement that matches the computer’s interface and form factor. Confirm capacity, endurance rating, thermal requirements, firmware support and warranty before buying; an M.2 NVMe drive is not automatically compatible with every M.2 slot.
Frequent crashes, disappearing volumes, read-only behavior or rapidly worsening health readings are warning signs to treat as a hardware incident. Copy data before experimenting with registry changes or maintenance schedules.
The practical answer to “Is Windows 11 killing my SSD?”
No blanket setting in the documented defaults establishes that Windows 11 is wearing out ordinary SSDs at a damaging rate. Keep SSD-aware optimization enabled, use Storage Sense to prevent low-space conditions, and narrow Search indexing only when your own activity measurements justify it. The evidence does not provide a universal write or terabyte figure—and therefore cannot promise that turning off these defaults will extend a drive’s life by a measurable amount.
