Windows 11 Widgets are not governed by one privacy switch. Privacy depends on three separate layers: Windows diagnostic data generated by the Widgets board, Microsoft-account data used to personalize it, and data collected by the app or online service that powers each individual widget. You can reduce or inspect each layer, but disabling one setting does not stop every form of collection.

What “private” means for Windows 11 Widgets

The Widgets board is a Windows feature, but the cards shown inside it are not all supplied by one system. A weather, news, sports or finance card can be powered by a different app or service. Microsoft’s official guidance therefore treats Widgets privacy as a combination of Windows controls, Microsoft-account controls and provider-specific policies.

Microsoft states that Windows diagnostic data is collected from the Widgets board according to the diagnostic-data setting selected in Windows Settings. It also says that account-associated information can be used to personalize the board, while each widget’s powering service may collect information under its own privacy settings. This is why the answer is neither an unconditional “yes” nor an unconditional “no.”

  • Windows diagnostics: telemetry about Windows, the device and feature use, governed by Windows diagnostic-data settings.
  • Microsoft-account personalization: information associated with your account that helps tailor the board, managed through Microsoft’s privacy dashboard.
  • Widget-provider collection: data gathered by the app or service behind a particular card, controlled by that provider.
  • Possible location estimation: some services may use Windows Location when enabled, or the IP address of your internet connection as a fallback.

Removing a card can stop that card appearing in your board, but it should not be described as a universal deletion request to Microsoft or to the provider. Likewise, turning off Windows Location may prevent use of that Windows location source without preventing every approximate-location inference made from an IP address.

What data can be involved?

Windows diagnostic data from the Widgets board

Windows diagnostic data covers information Microsoft uses to understand whether Windows is operating correctly and how built-in features are being used. For Widgets, Microsoft says collection follows the diagnostic-data level you choose in Windows Settings.

Required diagnostic data is the baseline needed to keep Windows secure, up to date and functioning. Microsoft describes this category as including information about the device, its settings and capabilities, and whether Windows and its features are operating normally.

Optional diagnostic data adds more detail, such as additional device-health information and app or feature-use details. The available categories and wording can change between Windows releases. Microsoft’s optional-diagnostic-data reference covers Windows 11 versions including 22H2, 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2, but that scope is not a guarantee that every future build will present identical labels.

These diagnostics are separate from a complete record of everything a widget provider might collect. A Windows diagnostic event can show that the operating system handled a feature without exposing the provider’s entire account history, advertising profile or server-side records.

Microsoft-account data used for personalization

The Widgets board can use data associated with your Microsoft account to personalize the content it displays. Microsoft directs users to the Microsoft privacy dashboard to access and manage this account-associated information.

The privacy dashboard is not a replacement for Windows diagnostic settings. Changing account personalization there does not automatically erase Windows diagnostic data, and it does not change the privacy policy or retention practices of a third-party service powering a widget.

Data collected by the app or service behind a widget

Microsoft describes each widget or dashboard as being powered by a different app or service. That provider may collect data separately from Windows. The type of information, retention period, account requirements and advertising choices therefore depend on the specific provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To identify the responsible provider, open the widget’s More options menu and look for Powered by. Use that name to find the provider’s privacy controls, account settings and data-deletion process. Microsoft’s Widgets settings cannot be assumed to control those external systems.

Location and approximate-location signals

Some widget services may tailor content using an estimated location. Microsoft says the estimate can come from the Windows Location service when it is enabled. If that source is unavailable, the service may fall back to the IP address of your internet connection.

This wording matters: the documentation does not establish that every widget uses precise GPS, nor does it promise that disabling Windows Location prevents all location estimation. An IP address generally identifies an approximate network location rather than a precise device position, but it can still influence regional news, weather or other personalization.

How the privacy layers compare

Layer Typical scope Where you manage it What it does not control
Windows diagnostics Device, settings, capabilities, operation and optional feature-use details generated by Windows, including the Widgets board Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback Provider-side collection or all Microsoft-account personalization data
Microsoft-account personalization Account-associated information used to tailor the Widgets board Microsoft privacy dashboard Windows diagnostic telemetry and a widget provider’s independent records
Widget provider Data collected by the app or online service powering a particular card The provider’s own privacy, account and data controls Windows-wide diagnostic settings
Location estimation Potential regional signal from Windows Location or an internet IP address Windows Location settings plus the provider’s controls All forms of approximate-location inference

Think of these as overlapping controls rather than a single privacy boundary. The setting that is most relevant depends on the data source you are trying to limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Choose the Windows diagnostic-data level

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy & security.
  3. Open Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Find Diagnostic data and select the available level you want, subject to the choices permitted by your edition and device-management policy.

On a personal, unmanaged PC, Windows normally lets you choose whether to send only required diagnostic data or to include optional diagnostic data. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator can restrict the setting, set a minimum level or remove the control entirely. If the switch is unavailable, that is a management policy limitation rather than evidence that Widgets has a separate hidden setting.

Required versus optional diagnostic data

Choice What Microsoft describes Privacy trade-off
Required diagnostic data Device, settings and capabilities, plus information needed to understand normal operation of Windows and its features Leaves the baseline telemetry needed for Windows security, updates and reliability
Optional diagnostic data Additional device-health information and more app or feature-use detail Provides Microsoft with more diagnostic context than the required level

Changing this option affects Windows diagnostic collection broadly; it is not a Widgets-only toggle. If your objective is to minimize telemetry while keeping Windows usable, select the least permissive option available to you and then address personalization and provider settings separately.

Step 2: Review “Tailored experiences” or “Personalized offers”

Remain in Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and look for the personalization control. Microsoft uses different labels across Windows updates: older or not-yet-updated installations may show Tailored experiences, while newer versions use Personalized offers.

Because the label depends on the installed Windows version, do not assume that a guide showing one phrase will match your screen exactly. Read the description beside the switch and turn it off if you do not want Windows to use diagnostic information for personalized suggestions or offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This control addresses Windows personalization. It does not turn off required diagnostic data, erase account-associated information already held in the Microsoft privacy dashboard, or override a provider’s own personalization system.

Step 3: Manage Microsoft-account personalization

  1. Open Microsoft’s privacy dashboard while signed in to the Microsoft account used with Windows.
  2. Review the account-associated activity and personalization categories related to Windows or the Widgets experience.
  3. Use the controls provided there to manage available history, personalization or deletion choices.

The exact categories shown can depend on your account, region and Microsoft services in use. Treat the dashboard as the place to review account-linked personalization data, not as a universal control panel for Windows telemetry or third-party widget services.

Step 4: Identify and control each widget provider

Find the “Powered by” service

  1. Open the Widgets board.
  2. Locate the card you want to investigate.
  3. Select its More options menu.
  4. Read the Powered by entry.

That entry tells you which app or service is responsible for the card. Open the provider’s privacy settings, account page or help documentation to see what it collects and which deletion or opt-out choices it offers. The provider may use an account, cookies, device identifiers, approximate location or interaction history according to its own policy; Microsoft’s general Widgets controls do not establish a provider-by-provider inventory.

Remove a widget you do not want

  1. Open the widget’s More options menu.
  2. Choose the remove or unpin action shown by Windows.
  3. Confirm if Windows asks you to do so.

Removal is the simplest way to stop that card from appearing in your board. It is a display and configuration change, not a guarantee that previously collected data has been deleted. For that, use the provider’s account or privacy process and the Microsoft privacy dashboard where applicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Check location-related settings without overpromising

If you do not want Windows Location used by apps and services, open Settings > Privacy & security > Location and review the device and app location permissions available on your installation. Disabling location can remove Windows Location as a source for a widget’s estimate.

However, Microsoft documents an IP-address fallback. A service can still infer a broad region from the network connection even when Windows Location is off. To reduce location-based personalization further, also inspect the provider identified under Powered by and disable location or regional personalization there when the provider offers that choice.

Step 6: Inspect Windows diagnostic events with Diagnostic Data Viewer

Diagnostic Data Viewer is useful when you want to see the Windows diagnostic layer rather than rely on a settings description.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
  2. Expand the section for viewing diagnostic data and enable Diagnostic Data Viewer if it is not already installed or enabled.
  3. Open the viewer from the link or Start menu entry provided by Windows.
  4. Search or browse events, open an event to inspect its details, and use the export command if you need a copy for your own records.

Microsoft documents a default history limit of up to 1 GB or 30 days, whichever comes first. Enabling data viewing can use up to 1 GB of disk space on the system drive. Those figures describe the viewer’s local storage behavior, not how much data Microsoft stores on its servers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also gives an estimate of approximately 6 MB of Windows diagnostic data per day for an average device. This is a Windows-wide estimate, not a measurement of Widgets traffic, and it should not be read as a Widgets-specific quota.

The viewer can show Windows diagnostic events, but it is not a complete audit of provider-side collection or Microsoft-account personalization. Events may be queued, and the bounded history means older records may no longer be available. When you finish investigating, turn off data viewing if you do not need to retain the local history.

What each control can and cannot accomplish

  • Lowering diagnostic data: reduces the Windows diagnostic category you selected; it does not remove a widget provider’s own collection.
  • Turning off Tailored experiences or Personalized offers: limits the Windows personalization use described by that switch; it does not disable all diagnostics or provider personalization.
  • Using the privacy dashboard: manages available Microsoft-account-associated data and controls; it does not govern Windows diagnostics in general or independent providers.
  • Disabling Windows Location: blocks or limits that Windows location source; it does not guarantee that approximate location cannot be inferred from an IP address.
  • Removing a widget: removes the card from the board; it does not automatically prove deletion of data already collected.
  • Using Diagnostic Data Viewer: exposes Windows diagnostic events and export options; it is not a universal inventory of every service involved in Widgets.

Common privacy questions and troubleshooting

Why can I not change the diagnostic-data setting?

The PC may be managed by an organization. Work or school policy can set the diagnostic level or hide the control. Contact the administrator if you need to know which policy applies; reinstalling or removing a widget will not override that policy.

Why do I still see personalized cards after changing one setting?

Personalization can come from a different layer. Check whether you changed the Windows personalization switch, Microsoft-account controls or the provider’s own settings. Also remember that a location estimate can use an IP fallback even when Windows Location is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Diagnostic Data Viewer show everything Widgets sends?

No. It is designed for Windows diagnostic events. Provider-side collection and account-linked personalization may occur outside the records shown there, and the viewer’s history is limited.

Can I make the Widgets board completely private?

You can minimize exposure by selecting the least permissive diagnostic level available, disabling the Windows personalization option, reviewing the Microsoft privacy dashboard, checking every provider under Powered by, removing unwanted cards and reviewing location permissions. No single documented switch guarantees that Windows, Microsoft-account systems and every provider will collect nothing.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Set Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback > Diagnostic data to the lowest available level.
  • Check whether your build calls the personalization control Tailored experiences or Personalized offers, and disable it if appropriate.
  • Review Microsoft-account data in the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
  • Use each card’s More options > Powered by entry to identify its provider.
  • Read the provider’s privacy controls and remove cards you do not use.
  • Review Settings > Privacy & security > Location, while accounting for IP-based fallback.
  • Use Diagnostic Data Viewer only when you need to inspect Windows events, and remember its 1 GB/30-day default history limit.

Bottom line: are Windows 11 Widgets private?

Windows 11 Widgets provide privacy controls, but they are not a single isolated data boundary. Windows can collect diagnostic data from the board; Microsoft can use account-associated data for personalization; and the service behind an individual widget may collect information under its own rules. The most accurate approach is layered: reduce Windows diagnostics, review the changing personalization label, manage account data in the privacy dashboard, identify each provider, remove unwanted cards and treat location as an approximate signal that may have an IP fallback.
