No. The available evidence shows that vampire-themed games became more common on Steam, but it does not demonstrate that they track consumer confidence or predict a recession. The trend is an intriguing cultural signal alongside household financial pressures—not a validated economic indicator.
What the claim means
“Consumer confidence” describes how people feel about their finances and the economy, including their expectations for income, employment, spending and business conditions. A useful confidence indicator must therefore be connected to measured consumer attitudes or to an outcome that has been tested against those attitudes.

The vampire-game claim asks whether the number of vampire-focused releases can serve that role. The evidence currently available cannot answer yes. A count of games released or listed on one storefront measures developer output and platform activity. It does not directly measure what households believe, whether they intend to spend, or whether the economy is expanding or contracting.
Lincoln Carpenter’s PC Gamer feature, published October 8, 2026, places a sharp increase in vampire-game activity beside statistics on income, prices, credit-card delinquency and personal savings. That juxtaposition may support a cultural interpretation: creators and audiences could be responding to an unsettled period. It is not a statistical test of consumer confidence.

What the Steam counts show
Carpenter manually identified vampire-centered games and reported several different counts. They should be read as the feature’s classifications, not as official economic statistics.
| Measure | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Vampire-focused Steam launches | 4 in 2016; 65 by October 8, 2026 | The 2026 number is year-to-date, not a completed annual total. |
| Largest quarterly launch count | 6 in the busiest quarter of 2020; 24 in the busiest quarter of 2026 | Compares each year’s peak quarter rather than full-year totals. |
| First appearances in the SteamDB archive | 9 in 2016; 99 in 2025 | Archive appearances are a proxy for recorded listing activity, not release dates or development starts. |
| All Steam game launches | 9,634 in 2020; 21,263 in 2025 | The overall market also expanded, so absolute vampire-game counts need a denominator. |
The increase is substantial in raw numbers, but the denominator matters. Steam releases more than doubled between 2020 and 2025 in the figures cited by the feature. A niche theme can therefore become more common simply because the entire store is producing and listing many more games. The raw count alone cannot tell us whether vampire games gained share, whether demand increased, or whether the pattern has any economic meaning.
How the games were counted
Manual classification rather than an official category
Carpenter reviewed 1,213 games carrying Steam’s Vampires tag and kept titles in which vampirism appeared to be a central creative interest. He excluded games where vampires were incidental. That judgment is inherently subjective; he cites Resident Evil Village as an example of a title omitted under his process.
The tag itself is noisy. The feature notes that Vampire Survivors and imitators used the tag for discoverability before Steam had a dedicated bullet-heaven genre. A tag can therefore reflect marketing strategy, community labeling or search optimization rather than a consistent artistic definition. Different researchers could produce different yearly totals from the same store.
SteamDB archive appearances are not release dates
For listing activity, the feature used the first appearance of a game in SteamDB’s archive because Steam did not expose the needed historical listing field in a usable form. That event is only the first recorded archive appearance. It is not when development began, when a store page was created in every case, or when the game launched.

- Be the Vampyr - Fight and manipulate with supernatural abilities
- Feed to Survive - Be the savior and the stalker
- Shape London - a Web of inter-connected citizens reacts to your decisions
- Country of origin: United States
Carpenter did not calculate a comparable yearly percentage for first appearances. Doing so would have required reviewing more than 100,000 games. The absence of that percentage is important: readers cannot infer the theme’s share of all new listings from the 9-versus-99 comparison alone.
Why the economic context does not establish confidence
The feature reports that real U.S. median household income rose about 4.6% from 2020 to 2025, while the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose approximately 27–29% from the start of 2020 through publication, depending on whether food and energy are included. It also discusses producer prices, credit-card delinquency and personal savings.

Those figures describe financial conditions that can affect households and businesses. They do not reveal whether people felt optimistic or pessimistic, and they do not show that vampire-game output moved in response to those conditions. Income and prices are economic indicators; confidence is an attitude measure. A reader should not treat one as a substitute for the other.
Several explanations could produce the same game-count increase without any change in confidence:
- More developers and publishers entered the market as total Steam output expanded.
- A successful vampire-themed game created a commercially attractive template that others copied.
- Steam tagging and search behavior made the theme easier to discover.
- Small teams favored recognizable supernatural concepts because they were practical for marketing or production.
- Release timing, early-access practices and changes in store visibility altered the recorded counts.
These possibilities are not mutually exclusive, and the counts do not distinguish among them.

What the “Vampire Menace Rating” does—and does not do
The feature’s custom “Vampire Menace Rating” divides quarterly vampire-game appearances in SteamDB by total quarterly Steam game launches. In mathematical terms, it is a themed-release share:

quarterly vampire appearances ÷ quarterly Steam launches
Using a denominator is an improvement over citing raw totals, because it partially adjusts for the growth of the store. However, the author describes the measure humorously and says it “might need some work.” It is not an established confidence index, an official statistic or a validated forecasting model.
The ratio also inherits the weaknesses of both inputs. The numerator depends on subjective classification and archive timing; the denominator depends on how Steam launches are counted. A ratio can rise because vampire activity increases, because other genres decline, or because listing practices change. Without a stable definition and independent validation, its movements have no agreed economic interpretation.
Consumer confidence versus recession indicators
Consumer confidence and recession dating are related but different questions. Confidence surveys ask households about present conditions and expectations. Recession analysis examines broad economic activity over time.

“The NBER’s traditional definition of a recession is that it is a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.”
—National Bureau of Economic Research, Business Cycle Dating Committee FAQ
The National Bureau of Economic Research considers depth, diffusion and duration across a range of economy-wide measures. A small subset of releases on one storefront does not meet that standard. Even a strong correlation with a survey would not, by itself, prove that vampire games caused or predicted a downturn.

A researcher wanting to test the idea would need more than an appealing chart. The following design would make the result interpretable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Define the category in advance. Specify whether a game qualifies because vampires are playable characters, a central story element, a title keyword or an official store tag. Apply the same rule to every year, including borderline cases.
- Build a reproducible time series. Record release dates and first listing dates separately, document delistings and early-access changes, and preserve the underlying game list so another analyst can audit it.
- Use an appropriate denominator. Compare vampire releases with all Steam releases in the same periods, and consider the share of new releases rather than only counts. Platform coverage should be stated clearly.
- Choose a named confidence series. Match each period to a recognized consumer-confidence survey or expectation measure, using the same geography and frequency. U.S. confidence cannot be inferred from a global storefront without qualification.
- Control for market-wide changes. Account for Steam’s growth, genre cycles, major hit games, changes in tagging, regional availability and shifts in early-access publishing.
- Test timing and alternatives. Check whether game activity leads, coincides with or follows confidence changes. Compare the result with unrelated genre trends to see whether all specialized themes rose together.
- Validate out of sample. Estimate the relationship on one period and test it on later data. Report forecast errors and uncertainty rather than presenting a visually persuasive but untested index.
The cited feature does not perform these tests. Consequently, it supports an observation about cultural production, not a claim of predictive accuracy.

What the numbers can responsibly tell you
They show a theme gaining visibility
Within Carpenter’s rules, vampire-focused releases were more numerous in 2026 than in 2016, and the peak quarterly count was higher than in 2020. That is a defensible description of the selected Steam data.
They do not show what players felt
Release counts do not measure sales, play time, wish lists, reviews, completion rates or household expectations. A game can be released with little audience, while a small number of highly successful titles can shape culture more than dozens of obscure launches.
They do not establish causation
Even if vampire releases and a confidence survey moved together, the relationship could reflect a third factor, such as overall game-industry growth or a broader appetite for familiar fantasy themes. Establishing causation would require a stronger design than the feature provides.

- Check whether the figure is a count, a percentage or a peak-period value.
- Check the date: “65 in 2026” means 65 by October 8, 2026, not necessarily 65 for the full year.
- Ask how a vampire game was defined and whether the rule was applied consistently.
- Separate SteamDB listing appearances from actual launches and from development starts.
- Look for a direct comparison with a named confidence series, not merely inflation or income data.
- Look for geographic scope, platform coverage, lead-lag analysis and out-of-sample accuracy.
- Treat a playful index name as commentary unless its construction and validation are documented.
Bottom line on the headline
Vampire games are not currently a good indicator of consumer confidence. The available Steam evidence documents a striking rise in vampire-themed listings and releases, while the accompanying economic statistics show that households faced significant price and financial pressures. That combination may be culturally interesting, but it is not evidence that vampire games measure optimism, pessimism or recession risk. The most accurate description is: an unvalidated cultural coincidence, not an economic barometer.
