Yes—Valheim server software is free to download, but running a server is not necessarily cost-free. Iron Gate distributes the Valheim Dedicated Server through Steam’s Tools library. With your own Windows or Linux computer, internet connection and electricity, you can avoid a hosting subscription. You must then configure the launch script, networking and maintenance yourself. Managed hosts charge a recurring fee for an always-on machine and add control panels, backups, mod tools, support and, in some cases, console crossplay.
What “free Valheim server” actually means
The Valheim Dedicated Server application has no separate purchase price when installed from Steam’s Library Tools. That is different from receiving free infrastructure. A self-hosted world runs on a computer that you provide, powered by your electricity and connected through your internet service.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Iron Gate’s April 11, 2024 dedicated-server guide describes a dedicated server as a way to provide “a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” Persistence means the world can continue while individual players are offline—but only if the host machine itself remains powered, connected and healthy.
Your real cost can therefore include electricity, a computer purchase or upgrade, bandwidth, storage, troubleshooting time and the opportunity cost of maintaining the system. If you already own a suitable machine and are comfortable administering it, the recurring cash cost may be close to zero. If you need new hardware or do not want to manage networking and updates, a paid host can be cheaper in time and risk.
How free self-hosting works
What you install
Open Steam, go to Library, change the library filter to Tools, and install Valheim Dedicated Server. The application is separate from the game client and from the infrastructure a hosting company supplies. You still need a Windows or Linux computer capable of running the server, an internet connection and permission to change the local router or firewall configuration.
Basic setup sequence
- Install the dedicated-server tool. Use Steam’s Library Tools list rather than buying another copy of Valheim’s game client.
- Open the supplied launch files. Iron Gate provides a Windows script and a Linux script. Edit the script values for the world and server configuration you intend to run, following the comments and syntax in the file.
- Choose the networking mode. Steam-backend mode accepts direct connections and normally uses ports 2456–2457. Crossplay mode sends traffic through a relay service.
- Configure the router when using the Steam backend. Forward the required port range from the router to the computer running the server, and allow the server through the operating-system firewall. Without that inbound path, players outside your home network generally cannot connect.
- Start the script and watch its console output. Keep the window or service running; closing it stops the server process.
- Test from outside your home network. Have a friend connect, or use another connection such as mobile data. A test from the same LAN can succeed even when internet port forwarding is wrong.
- Keep the host maintained. Install server updates, monitor disk space, protect the machine, and make copies of the world files before changing mods or configuration.
Steam backend versus Crossplay
Steam-backend hosting normally requires inbound forwarding for ports 2456–2457. This gives you direct control over the network path, but router configuration, carrier-grade NAT and changing local addresses can complicate access.

Crossplay mode uses a relay server, so outside players do not need inbound port forwarding to reach the host. That can be the simplest option for mixed-platform groups or restrictive home networks. Relay traffic still depends on the host computer staying online and on the players’ connections; it does not remove the need for a running server or eliminate every source of latency.

What self-hosting costs in practice
- Hardware: You supply the Windows or Linux machine. An old computer can work if it is stable and has adequate storage, but buying or repairing one changes the economics.
- Electricity: A machine that stays on day and night consumes power continuously. The amount depends on the hardware and local electricity rate.
- Internet service: The server uses your connection’s upstream capacity. Data limits, outages and router reboots affect everyone’s access.
- Administration: You handle scripts, firewall and router settings, updates, world-file backups, mod compatibility and recovery after crashes.
- Availability: The world is unavailable when the host computer is shut down, asleep, disconnected or being repaired.
Self-hosting is therefore best described as no hosting subscription, not “free with no obligations.” It is attractive when someone in the group already has an always-on machine and the technical confidence to maintain it.
What paid Valheim hosting buys you
A managed provider rents you an always-on game-server instance and wraps it in a web control panel. The monthly fee pays for the machine, data-center connectivity and operational features. The exact resources, locations, slot limits and policies vary by provider and billing term.
| Provider | Published price snapshot | Included or advertised features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DatHost | €14.90 per month; €8.90 per month with six-month billing; €6.90 per month with yearly billing | 10 players, crossplay, one-click world manager, mods and plugins, backups, 14-day money-back guarantee | Currency and discounted terms can change; verify the total at checkout. |
| GPORTAL | $15.59 per 30 days; $42.09 per 90 days; $79.51 per 180 days; a three-day offer from $6.24 | 10 slots, 50 GB backup space, DDoS protection, ValheimPlus, one-click mods and crossplay | Published prices depend on location and selected term; the short offer is not a normal monthly equivalent. |
| Nitrado | $16.19 per 30 days; $43.59 per 90 days; $4.09 per three days before the displayed promotion | 10 slots, PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 crossplay, selectable locations | The displayed 40% reduction requires promo code DEEPNORTH40. Treat the standard 30-day amount as the recurring reference, not the sale price. |
| Host Havoc | From $9.99 per month | NVMe storage, DDoS protection, web console, file manager and offsite backups | “From” pricing can vary with billing term and add-ons. |
These are published examples checked on October 15, 2026, not permanent quotes. Currency conversion, tax, renewal pricing, promotions, slot counts, locations and refund rules can change. Confirm the checkout page before paying.

Free versus paid: the decision factors that matter
| Question | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring server bill | No separate hosting subscription, assuming you already have the equipment and connection. | Yes; the examples above range from a “from” price of $9.99 per month to €14.90 per month or about $16.19 per 30 days before discounts. |
| Who keeps it online? | You. A sleeping, powered-off or disconnected host stops the world. | The provider operates the machine in a data center. |
| Network setup | You edit scripts and, for Steam-backend mode, normally forward ports 2456–2457. | The provider exposes the service through its panel; you generally do not alter your home router. |
| Crossplay | Crossplay relay mode avoids inbound forwarding, but you still administer the server. | Several published plans advertise crossplay; supported platforms differ, so check the specific plan. |
| Backups and restores | You create, test and store world backups yourself. | Plans may include scheduled or offsite backups and panel-based restores; retention limits differ. |
| Mods and plugins | You install and update them manually and keep every player’s files compatible. | Some panels provide one-click mod tools, ValheimPlus support or plugin managers. |
| Support | Your group diagnoses router, operating-system and game errors. | You can use the provider’s support channel, subject to its response policy and scope. |
| Location and latency | Players connect to your home connection, so distance and upload quality depend on where you live. | You can often select a data-center location; the nearest available region is usually preferable. |
| Refund and cancellation | No hosting contract to cancel, but hardware and electricity costs remain. | Refund windows, renewal terms and promotional pricing are provider-specific. |
When self-hosting is the better choice
- Someone already owns a reliable Windows or Linux computer that can stay on.
- The group is comfortable editing a launch script and changing router or firewall settings.
- Players are mainly on the same platform or can use the relay-based crossplay mode.
- You want maximum control over files, updates and mods and are willing to make your own backups.
- The world is occasional rather than a 24/7 community server.
Before choosing this route, identify who is responsible for the machine when the usual host is away. A “free” server that nobody can restart or repair is not practically free for the group.
When paying is worth it
- Persistent access: Friends need to enter while the owner is asleep, traveling or offline.
- Mixed platforms: The group needs PC and console access and wants a provider with explicit crossplay support.
- Less home-network exposure: You do not want to forward ports or troubleshoot carrier-grade NAT.
- Operational convenience: A web console, file manager, one-click world tools or mod installer saves repeated administrative work.
- Recovery: Managed or offsite backups reduce the impact of accidental world-file changes or a failed computer.
- Support: The group prefers a paid support channel to diagnosing every server and network problem itself.
Paying does not guarantee perfect performance. Check the provider’s server location, resource limits, backup retention, mod policy, support hours and renewal price rather than selecting solely by the headline monthly number.
How to compare a host before ordering
- Normalize the billing period. Convert 30-day, 90-day, 180-day and annual offers to the period you actually expect to keep the server. Do not compare a one-time three-day promotion directly with a recurring monthly rate.
- Confirm the player limit. The published examples above list 10 players, but a different plan or game configuration may use another slot count.
- Check platform support. Ask whether the plan supports the exact PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 or Switch 2 combination your group uses, and whether crossplay requires a particular mode.
- Inspect backup controls. Look for schedule, retention, storage quota and one-click restore—not merely the word “backups.”
- Verify mod workflow. Determine whether mods and plugins are one-click installs, manual uploads or unsupported, and how updates are handled.
- Choose a sensible region. A nearby data center generally reduces network distance. Confirm that the desired location is available on the plan rather than assuming every region is included.
- Read the commercial terms. Check taxes, currency, renewal rate, cancellation process, refund window, promotional-code requirements and any charges for additional storage or slots.
Common self-hosting problems and fixes
Friends cannot connect from the internet
Confirm that the server is running, the correct machine has a stable local address, the operating-system firewall allows the process and the router forwards ports 2456–2457 to that address. Test from an external connection, not only from another device on the same home network. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not be possible; Crossplay relay mode avoids the need for inbound forwarding.

The world disappears when the owner leaves
A player-hosted session and a dedicated server are different arrangements. Ensure the dedicated-server script is running on an always-on machine and that the computer is not sleeping. If the group needs access during holidays or work hours, a managed host may be more practical.
A mod update breaks the server
Stop the server before changing files, keep a dated copy of the world, and make sure every player uses compatible mod versions. Restore the last known-good backup if the world fails to load. Managed panels can simplify file access and backups, but they do not make incompatible mods safe.
An update changes server behavior
Keep notes of the current server version and configuration. Back up before applying game, server or mod updates, then start the server and verify that the world loads before inviting everyone back. A provider may offer update controls, but you should still retain an independent copy of important world data.

A practical recommendation
Choose self-hosting when a group member already has a suitable Windows or Linux machine, can edit the supplied launch script, can configure the network or use Crossplay relay mode, and accepts responsibility for uptime and backups. It is the lowest-cash option when those resources already exist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a paid service when the world must remain available without the owner, when the group needs console/PC crossplay, or when managed backups, mod tools and support are worth more than the monthly bill. Compare the full billing term and renewal conditions, not just a promotional first period.
