Not on the evidence available. A 11 October 2026 GameGPU article reports one anonymous UK shopper paying £480 for a PS5 whose box was heavily dented in transit; it says the console itself was in perfect condition. The article does not name the retailer or provide sales data to support its wider claim that major UK retailers are seeing a surge. GameGPU’s report should therefore be treated as an unverified anecdote, not proof of a nationwide trend.
What does the £480 story actually describe?
The headline calls the consoles “damaged,” but the account in the article describes damage to the packaging, not to the hardware. It says one customer bought the last console at an unnamed British retail-chain branch for £480 after its box was heavily dented during transport. The article says the PS5 was undamaged.
There is no named customer or retailer, receipt, sales tally, or independent confirmation in the report. It does not establish that shoppers across the UK are snapping up damaged consoles, or that a broader sales increase is specifically driven by GTA VI.

PlayStation’s UK shop lists a certified refurbished PS5 Slim for £479.99. That is a separate official listing, not evidence that the console in the anecdote was refurbished, that it had packaging damage, or that it sold for £480. See PlayStation’s UK refurbished shop for the current listing; availability and price can change.

- Model Number CFI-2000

A certified refurbished listing, a used console, and a new console in damaged packaging are different conditions. Check the exact item description, seller, return window, and warranty terms before buying; the reported anecdote does not establish those terms for any retailer.
Which PS5 can play GTA VI, and when is it due?
PlayStation UK lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a release date of 19 November 2026. Its product page describes the game as single-player and says it is not playable on PS4. Check PlayStation’s GTA VI page for the current platform and release information.

The page lists the Standard Edition at £69.99 and the Ultimate Edition at £89.99 at the time checked. These prices may change, so confirm them on the store before purchase. PlayStation also says GTA VI uses DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers; those features do not mean you need to buy an extra controller.
Is the physical GTA VI version a disc?
No. Rockstar Support says the physical version contains a digital download code rather than a disc, and is expected to be available from 12 November 2026 to support preloading. Code redemption is subject to platform-account region restrictions. Rockstar advises buying from a retailer in the country matching the platform account to avoid possible activation problems; its listed PlayStation code region for UK players is the United Kingdom. Do sales figures confirm a GTA VI-driven PS5 rush?
GTA6 Life reports that Nielsen IQ figures showed UK PS5 sales up 33% in the week of the 27 August 2026 GTA VI Extended Look, and Xbox Series X|S sales up 34% that same week. The article says unit volumes were not published. These are secondary reports of overall weekly console sales, not counts of damaged or £480 PS5s, and they do not verify the GameGPU anecdote. What should a buyer check before choosing a PS5?
- Confirm the model and condition. Distinguish a new console with a damaged box from a refurbished or used console, and ask whether the hardware has been inspected.
- Check the seller’s terms. Read the return policy and warranty coverage for the specific unit rather than assuming a damaged-box item has the same terms as a standard new product.
- Compare the full price and availability. The £480 story is one anonymous reported purchase, not a verified market price. Check current listings for the model you want.
- Plan for a download code. The physical GTA VI package described by Rockstar has no disc; make sure the code region matches the country of the platform account.
