Possibly in theory, but no known exoplanet has been shown to be more habitable than Earth. “Superhabitable” is a proposed way to describe a world whose conditions might be more favorable to life—not a confirmed category of planets. Astronomers can identify promising candidates and model their potential, but they cannot yet verify that any is a better home for life than Earth.
What does “more habitable than Earth” mean?
In astronomy, a “superhabitable” world is a hypothetical planet that might support life under conditions more favorable than those on Earth. René Heller and John Armstrong introduced the term in a 2014 paper, proposing that habitability should not be reduced to whether a planet sits in its star’s conventional habitable zone. That is a theoretical framework, not evidence that a known planet has outperformed Earth as a habitat. Heller and Armstrong, “Superhabitable Worlds” (2014).
“Habitable” also does not mean “inhabited.” NASA distinguishes a world that could support life from one where life actually exists. Even a planet in the habitable zone has no guarantee of being habitable, much less inhabited. NASA, “Reconnaissance of Potentially Habitable Worlds with NASA’s Webb” (2024).

Why the habitable zone is not enough
The habitable zone is the range of distances from a star where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface under suitable conditions. It is a useful first filter for finding targets, not a “life zone”: being inside it does not establish that a planet has liquid water, a suitable atmosphere, life, or a climate more favorable than Earth’s. NASA Science, “The Habitable Zone”.

A 2026 NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies summary makes the distinction explicit: “HZ exoplanets are where surface oceans are possible, not necessarily where life is possible.” It discusses “euhabitability” as a proposed refinement focused on suitability for life. In that framing, a planet outside the conventional habitable zone could still be relevant to life, while one inside it could lack essential conditions. The term is a newer proposal, not a settled replacement for all uses of “habitable zone.” NASA GISS, “Euhabitability” (2026).
What traits might make a world superhabitable?
Researchers have proposed several characteristics that could make a planet a promising place for life. These are hypotheses and candidate-selection ideas—not a checklist that proves a world is habitable. Heller and Armstrong suggested that promising worlds might be somewhat older and more massive than Earth and orbit K dwarf stars. They also noted that planetary bodies beyond the conventional habitable zone can matter if another energy source, such as tidal heating, helps sustain conditions relevant to life. Heller and Armstrong (2014).

A 2019 paper proposed a more detailed “most valuable planet” profile. Its suggested values are theoretical parameters, not measurements of a confirmed superhabitable planet:
- Star: A K dwarf, a type of star proposed as a potentially favorable host.
- Age: About 5–8 billion years.
- Mass and radius: Up to about 1.5 times Earth’s mass and a radius about 10% larger than Earth’s.
- Temperature: A mean surface temperature around 5°C higher than Earth’s.
- Other conditions: A potentially favorable atmosphere and balance of land and water, alongside geological recycling and magnetic protection.
These suggestions are not established consensus requirements, and the paper notes that important historical properties cannot currently be evaluated for exoplanets. A real candidate need not match every proposed value to merit study. Schulze-Makuch et al., “In Search for a Planet Better than Earth” (2019).

Have astronomers found planets that score above Earth?
A 2015 comparative-habitability study assigned some Kepler and K2 planets higher values than Earth on its proposed metric. That result does not show that those planets are actually more habitable. The metric relies on assumptions about factors including radiation, reflectivity, orbital eccentricity, and whether planets are rocky; its purpose was to prioritize targets for follow-up, not certify superior living conditions.
The authors stated the limitation directly: “This does not mean these planets are ‘more habitable’ than Earth—it means that an Earth twin orbiting a solar twin that is observed by Kepler would not have the highest probability of being habitable.” A modeled score is not a measurement of life, ecological productivity, or overall suitability compared with Earth. Barnes, Meadows, and Evans, “Comparative Habitability of Transiting Exoplanets” (2015).

Why is it so hard to compare exoplanets with Earth?
Habitability is not a single property that astronomers can read directly from a planet’s orbit or size. Researchers use different definitions and proxies; habitability may be treated as binary, continuous, or probabilistic. A direct measure would require knowing how a particular environment affects a biological quantity for an organism or community—information generally unavailable for exoplanets. Mendez et al., “Habitability Models” (2021).
For distant worlds, astronomers may be able to measure properties such as orbital period and size, and in favorable cases study light filtered through an atmosphere. But those observations do not provide a complete inventory of surface water, pressure, climate, nutrients, life, or geological history. Some of the properties proposed as important to long-term habitability are therefore difficult or impossible to establish directly for an exoplanet.

When comparing candidates, keep observed properties separate from estimates and model outputs. A planet’s placement in a potentially temperate orbit, for example, says less than a confirmed surface environment would; a high score says only how it performed under a particular model’s assumptions.
What can be concluded today?
Scientists have plausible ideas about what could make a world more favorable to life than Earth, and they can use models to identify planets worth studying. But no known exoplanet has been established as more habitable than Earth. The habitable zone and comparative scores help frame questions for follow-up; neither proves that a planet has life or offers better conditions for it.
