No. The 1994 Street Fighter, 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and the 2026 Street Fighter are separate live-action adaptations. They reuse Capcom characters and ideas, but no official material establishes one shared movie timeline.
At a glance: three films, three continuities
| Year | Film | Primary focus | Key premise | Continuity status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | Street Fighter (also marketed as Street Fighter: The Ultimate Battle) | Colonel Guile | Guile has 72 hours to stop General M. Bison’s hostage scheme. | Self-contained adaptation |
| 2009 | Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li | Chun-Li | Chun-Li pursues revenge after Bison is responsible for her father’s death. | Separate origin-story adaptation |
| 2026 | Street Fighter | Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li | In a story set in 1993, Chun-Li recruits estranged fighters for a World Warrior Tournament. | New adaptation; no confirmed link to either earlier film |
The release years are the clearest way to place the movies beside one another. A later film’s use of the same names does not make it a sequel: the actors, biographies, character functions and story premises change from one production to the next.
What the 1994 movie is about
Universal’s listing describes the 1994 film as a military action adventure led by Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile and Raúl Juliá as General M. Bison. Bison’s hostage plot gives Guile a 72-hour deadline, making the conflict a rescue-and-assault operation rather than a tournament origin story. The listed runtime is 1 hour 42 minutes, and the film has been issued on DVD and Blu-ray.

How it rearranges the game cast
The movie builds its narrative around Guile and his military unit. Ryu and Ken are street-fighter allies whom Guile recruits for the operation, not the central rivals and tournament participants familiar from the games. Chun-Li, played by Ming-Na Wen, is also part of this military-thriller framework. Bison functions as a dictator commanding a large organization, so the film’s version of Shadaloo serves the hostage plot.

Why this matters for continuity
This setup leaves the 1994 picture with a complete beginning, middle and ending of its own. Nothing in its premise creates a narrative hand-off to a later Chun-Li childhood or explains a future World Warrior Tournament. The film is best understood as its own interpretation of the game property.
What the 2009 Chun-Li film changes
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is a 2009, 1-hour-36-minute production released through 20th Century Fox. Apple’s catalog describes Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, who seeks revenge after Bison causes her father’s death. Capcom’s North American press material identifies Kreuk as Chun-Li and Neal McDonough as Bison.
An origin story, not a continuation
Producer Patrick Aiello explained that the filmmakers selected Chun-Li’s journey as an origin story and intentionally left Ken and Ryu for another day. That creative choice places the film before the familiar tournament-style ensemble rather than after Guile’s 1994 mission. It also gives Chun-Li a different personal history and motivation from the 1994 film’s supporting-character role.

Separate rights and production history
Aiello also distinguished the project from the earlier release: Universal had distributed the 1994 picture, while Capcom retained the underlying rights and the new film was made with Hyde Park and 20th Century Fox. Different production arrangements do not by themselves prove separate canon, but here they accompany visibly different character histories and no connective storyline.
Is it a sequel to the 1994 film?
No. The 2009 movie does not pick up Guile’s operation, treat its events as established history or explain how its Chun-Li biography follows Ming-Na Wen’s version. It is a fresh adaptation centered on Chun-Li, so watching the 1994 movie first is unnecessary for understanding it.
What is known about the 2026 film
The official synopsis for the 2026 Street Fighter says the story is set in 1993. Estranged fighters Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, and Ken Masters, played by Noah Centineo, are drawn back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang, recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. The announced cast also includes Joe Anoa’i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Kitao Sakurai is credited as director.

Paramount Global Content lists a premiere date of October 16, 2026 and repeats the 1993 setting and tournament premise. The production is identified with Legendary and Paramount. Its official descriptions present the film independently; they do not call it a sequel to the 1994 movie or to The Legend of Chun-Li.

Is the 2026 movie a remake?
It is not presented as a scene-for-scene remake of the 1994 film, and its announced story is substantially different: Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li lead a World Warrior Tournament plot instead of Guile’s 72-hour hostage mission. The safest description is a new adaptation or rebooted continuity. A formal studio statement defining its canon relationship to the earlier movies has not been published, so “reboot” is an editorial classification based on the available premise rather than an official continuity label.
Why the 1993 setting does not connect it to the 1994 release
A story set in 1993 can still be a new continuity. Fictional chronology and production chronology are different systems: the 2026 film’s internal year does not require the characters or events of the 1994 film to exist in that world. The official synopsis supplies the setting and characters, but no bridge to Guile’s earlier mission or to the 2009 origin story.

Character continuity: the same names, different roles
| Character | 1994 film | 2009 film | 2026 film |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guile | Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Colonel Guile is the military lead directing the response to Bison. | Not part of the central origin-story setup described for the film. | Cody Rhodes is announced as Guile in the tournament adaptation. |
| M. Bison | Raúl Juliá plays a dictator whose hostage scheme drives the plot. | Neal McDonough plays the antagonist tied to Chun-Li’s family tragedy. | David Dastmalchian is announced as Bison; the official premise places him in the new tournament-era cast. |
| Chun-Li | Ming-Na Wen plays a supporting figure within Guile’s operation. | Kristin Kreuk is the protagonist pursuing revenge and discovering her path. | Callina Liang’s Chun-Li recruits Ryu and Ken for the World Warrior Tournament. |
| Ryu and Ken | They act as street-fighter allies recruited by Guile. | The filmmakers said they were being held for a possible later story rather than used as the film’s focus. | Andrew Koji’s Ryu and Noah Centineo’s Ken are estranged fighters brought back into competition. |
These shifts are more significant than casting changes. Each film assigns the characters a different place in the fictional world: military operatives in 1994, an absent or deferred pair in 2009, and co-leads in a tournament narrative in 2026.

Different protagonists
Guile drives the 1994 story, Chun-Li drives the 2009 story, and the 2026 synopsis distributes the central mission among Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li. A shared sequel timeline would need to account for those shifts; none of the official descriptions does so.

Chun-Li is a supporting participant in one film and a revenge-driven protagonist in another. Ryu and Ken move from Guile’s recruited allies to characters deliberately omitted from the 2009 focus, then become estranged fighters in the 2026 setup. Bison’s political role and relationship to Chun-Li also change.

Independent official descriptions
The official listings for all three movies explain their premises separately. They do not identify a shared universe, provide a continuity map or state that one film follows another. That absence matters because a sequel normally establishes the earlier story as part of its background.
Different production eras
The 1994 release came from Universal’s film and home-video cycle; the 2009 project involved Hyde Park, Capcom and 20th Century Fox; the 2026 production is associated with Legendary and Paramount. The corporate changes are context, not the sole evidence, but they coincide with the creative resets visible on screen.
How the movies relate to the Street Fighter games
All three films draw on Capcom’s characters, names and concepts, but game canon and movie continuity are separate systems. A game relationship can explain why Guile, Chun-Li, Ryu, Ken, Bison, Akuma or Blanka recur; it does not make the films chapters in one cinematic story.
The 1994 film borrows the roster while reshaping it into a military action plot. The 2009 film uses Chun-Li’s identity for a personal origin narrative. The 2026 film returns to Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and the World Warrior Tournament concept. Those shared ingredients show adaptation from the games, not continuity between the adaptations.
What order should you watch them in?
- 1994 — Street Fighter: Start here if you want to see the earliest live-action interpretation and its Guile-versus-Bison military structure. The listed runtime is 1 hour 42 minutes.
- 2009 — The Legend of Chun-Li: Watch next to compare a separate Chun-Li origin story. Its listed runtime is 1 hour 36 minutes.
- 2026 — Street Fighter: Watch after its October 16, 2026 premiere if you want release-order history and the newest announced adaptation, set in 1993.
This is a comparison order, not a required story sequence. You can begin with any one film without missing plot information from the others. Choose the 1994 movie for Guile and military action, the 2009 movie for Chun-Li’s personal origin, or the 2026 movie for the Ryu-Ken-Chun-Li tournament premise.
How to compare the films intelligently
- Protagonist and focus: Note who receives the mission, whose past is explained and whose decisions move the plot.
- Bison and Shadaloo: Compare Bison as a dictator, a figure tied to Chun-Li’s family tragedy and a character in the new tournament-era ensemble.
- Character repositioning: Track whether Guile, Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are soldiers, allies, missing figures or co-leads.
- Game influence: Separate recognizable game elements from movie-created backstories and plot mechanics.
- Production context: Treat the films as products of different release eras and studios rather than installments built from one continuing screenplay.
The practical result is simple: there is no canon watch order to decode. Release order offers the clearest historical comparison, while standalone viewing is valid for every entry.
