Short answer: TECNO, Infinix, and itel phones can be sensible purchases, but safety is a model-by-model question rather than a brand-wide guarantee. Google’s official Android directory lists all three companies among manufacturers that ship Play Protect certified devices. That certification provides important baseline protections; it does not promise identical software support, privacy practices, network compatibility, or warranty service for every phone and every country.

Before paying, verify the exact model’s Play Protect status, remaining Android and security-update support, local warranty and repair options, seller legitimacy, network bands, and the permissions requested by its apps. The checklist below shows how to do that without relying on a brand name alone.

What does “safe to buy” mean for these phones?

Phone safety has several separate parts. A handset can be genuine and free of known malware when it leaves the factory, yet still be a poor purchase if it stops receiving security patches soon, lacks the network bands your carrier uses, comes from an unauthorized importer, or collects more data than you want to share. Conversely, a lower-priced phone can be a reasonable choice when its exact model is certified, supported, compatible with local networks, and covered by a usable warranty.

For TECNO, Infinix, and itel, the strongest public baseline is Google Play Protect certification. Google says certification checks whether a device follows Android’s security and permissions model, supports core compatibility requirements, and ships with recent security updates. It is meaningful evidence about the device build that was tested, not a permanent promise about every handset sold under the same brand.

Safety question What the available official information establishes What you still must check
Is the software a legitimate Android build? Google’s partner directory lists TECNO, Infinix, and itel among brands shipping Play Protect certified devices. The exact model and regional variant, especially when the listing is imported or refurbished.
Does it have baseline Android protections? Certified devices must meet Android security and permissions requirements and include Google security features. Whether the phone remains supported and receives patches after you buy it.
Is personal data handled the way you expect? TECNO and itel publish privacy disclosures describing possible data collection and third-party services. Which optional apps and services are enabled on your model, and which permissions you grant.
Can you obtain service? Carlcare identifies itself as the official customer-service provider for all three brands. Authorized-center location, parts availability, warranty terms, and eligibility in your country.

Are TECNO, Infinix, and itel phones Google certified?

Google’s certified Android partners directory includes TECNO, Infinix, and itel. Google’s Certified Android devices guidance explains that certification involves compatibility and security testing. Google describes more than 100,000 compatibility tests covering functions such as backup, restore, and purchased-video playback, along with hundreds of tests for compliance with Android’s security and permissions model and for recent security updates.

Those figures describe Google’s certification program; they are not a count of certified models from any of the three brands. A brand appearing in the partner directory does not prove that every model, every country variant, or every gray-market unit is certified. Check the retail box for the Play Protect certification logo and confirm the exact model with the seller or manufacturer before purchase.

How to check a phone after you receive it

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then Settings and About (labels can vary slightly by Android version).
  3. Look for Play Protect certification. A certified status is the result you want.
  4. Compare the displayed model number with the box, invoice, and the manufacturer’s regional specification page. A mismatch is a reason to stop and contact the seller.

Google says Play Protect certified devices are required to ship without pre-installed malware and to include Google Play Protect, including automatic virus scanning and Find My Device. This is a baseline at certification; it cannot guarantee that a later-installed app, modified firmware, or compromised account will always be safe.

What does certification protect you from—and what does it not?

Certification is best understood as a gate, not a lifetime warranty. It indicates that the submitted software build met Google’s compatibility, security, and permissions requirements. It also means the device is intended to work with Google’s security services rather than operating as an uncertified Android fork.

  • It does support: a tested level of Android compatibility, Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and security requirements tied to the certified build.
  • It does not establish: a universal update period, the quality of a particular seller, the privacy behavior of every optional service, the condition of a used phone, or the legality of an imported regional variant.
  • It does not replace: checking the model number, current patch level, bootloader status, warranty, network bands, and return policy.

Keep the certification claim tied to the exact device you are considering. A listing that merely says “Android phone” or uses a brand logo is not proof of certification.

How long will Android and security updates last?

There is no single update-support duration that applies to every TECNO, Infinix, or itel phone. Google’s certification requirements include software builds with recent security updates at the time of testing, but the official certification pages do not state one support timeline for every product line.

Ask for a written commitment for the precise model and region. Record the phone’s launch date, the Android version it ships with, the latest promised Android version, and the expected end date for security patches. A phone released a year ago may have substantially less support remaining than a newly launched model, even when both are certified.

Questions to ask the seller or manufacturer

  • Which Android versions will this exact model receive?
  • Until what date or month will security patches be provided?
  • Does the commitment apply to this country variant or only another market?
  • How are updates delivered—over the air, through a service center, or both?
  • Is the unit new, refurbished, open-box, or imported?

If the answer is “updates are guaranteed” without a model-specific term, treat that as incomplete information. Compare the remaining support period with how long you intend to keep the phone.

Are these phones private?

No brand-level yes-or-no privacy ranking is supported by the official statements available here. Privacy depends on the model’s software, optional services, installed applications, country settings, and the permissions you grant.

TECNO’s privacy policy says practices can vary by product and country and directs users to third-party privacy policies when third-party services or software-development kits are involved. That means two regional versions can present different disclosures or optional features.

itel’s privacy policy lists categories that may be collected for specified services, including device and SIM identifiers, advertising ID, logs, location in some services, and application-use information. The policy also describes controls for location access in device settings. These are disclosures of possible processing, not an independent finding that a particular phone misuses data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical privacy setup

  1. During setup, read each permission request instead of accepting every prompt automatically.
  2. Open Settings > Privacy (the wording varies by Android version) and review permission manager entries for location, microphone, camera, contacts, files, and phone access.
  3. Set location, microphone, and camera to Allow only while using the app or Ask every time when that option is available.
  4. Disable optional advertising, recommendation, analytics, or cloud features you do not need; record what each toggle does before turning it off.
  5. Remove unused pre-installed apps where Android permits removal, and disable rather than force-delete system components that the phone requires.
  6. Keep Google Play Protect enabled and install updates from the system updater and Play Store rather than from unknown download sites.

Review the applicable privacy policy for your country and the policies of any third-party service you activate. Privacy controls reduce unnecessary collection, but they cannot change data that a required service must process to function.

Can you get legitimate repairs and warranty support?

Carlcare identifies itself as the official customer-service provider for TECNO, Infinix, and itel and lists repair, warranty, service-center, and software-upgrade services. That gives buyers an official support route, but availability is local rather than automatic.

Verify support before purchase

  • Search for an authorized center in your country and note its address and contact method.
  • Read the local warranty period, exclusions, proof-of-purchase rules, and treatment of accidental or liquid damage.
  • Ask whether the exact model and regional variant is eligible for service; imported units may have different coverage.
  • Check whether replacement screens, batteries, and other parts are stocked locally or must be ordered.
  • Confirm who pays shipping and diagnostic fees if a warranty claim is rejected.

Keep the receipt, box label, and model number. A phone can be technically certified yet still be impractical if returning it requires international shipping or the nearest authorized center is inaccessible.

What should you verify before paying?

Use this sequence for an in-store, online, or marketplace purchase. It separates facts you can verify immediately from promises that require documentation.

  1. Identify the exact model. Record the full model number, storage and memory configuration, dual-SIM or single-SIM version, and the country or region code. Do not rely on a family name alone.
  2. Confirm Play Protect certification. Check the box logo and ask the seller to demonstrate the Play Store certification status. For an online listing, request a photo of the model label and a return option if the delivered unit differs.
  3. Check remaining updates. Obtain the model-specific Android-version and security-patch commitment, then compare it with the phone’s launch date and your intended ownership period.
  4. Check network compatibility. Compare the phone’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE support, SIM format, and carrier requirements with those used in your country. A certified phone can still have poor coverage if it is the wrong regional variant.
  5. Validate seller and import status. Look for a real invoice, local warranty wording, an established return address, and a clear statement that the unit is new or refurbished. A very low price can indicate an unofficial import or altered software.
  6. Confirm service access. Locate an authorized repair center and ask whether warranty service covers your model and purchase channel.
  7. Match hardware to your needs. Check storage, memory, battery capacity, charging standard, camera performance, display type, and processor using reliable specifications and model-specific reviews. Brand reputation cannot substitute for these details.
  8. Read the return policy. Make sure you can return the phone if it arrives uncertified, carrier-incompatible, damaged, or materially different from the listing.

How should you compare two specific models?

Once you have two named phones, compare them on the same axes rather than asking which brand is “best.” The following framework keeps safety and value in the same decision.

Best Value
Tecno Spark 50 Ai 4G LTE (256GB + 4GB) (Compatible with Tmobile Mint Tello Boost Mobile and Worldwide) Dual SIM 6.78" 120Hz 50MP Camera (Ink Black)

  • 120Hz 6.78" Smooth Display 6.78 inches, 111.0 cm2 (~83.5% screen-to-body ratio) / 720 x 1600 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~259 ppi density)

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Price and warranty What is the total local price, warranty duration, return window, and seller status?
Certification and support Is each exact model certified, and how many Android and security-support months remain at purchase?
Performance and storage Which processor, memory amount, storage type, and expandable-storage options fit your apps?
Battery and charging What are the battery capacity, charging speed, charger included, and replacement options?
Camera and display Do the display brightness, refresh rate, stabilization, and camera results meet your use case?
Network compatibility Does the regional model support your carrier’s bands, VoLTE, eSIM, and 5G where needed?
Repair access Are authorized service, parts, and warranty processing available nearby?
Privacy controls Which optional services are enabled, what data categories are disclosed, and can permissions be restricted?

Do not fill unknown cells with assumptions. If a seller cannot provide a model-specific answer about certification, updates, or warranty, mark that item as unknown and weigh the risk accordingly.

What are the main warning signs?

  • The listing gives only a brand and screen size, not a complete model number.
  • The seller refuses to show Play Protect certification or says certification is guaranteed solely because of the brand.
  • The phone arrives with an unlocked bootloader, unfamiliar system apps, or a different region than advertised.
  • Update promises are vague, verbal, or copied from another model.
  • The warranty is “seller only,” requires overseas shipping, or excludes the advertised regional variant.
  • The price is far below local market levels and the seller cannot explain whether the phone is imported or refurbished.
  • Important carrier bands, charger standards, or storage details are missing from the listing.

Any one warning sign may have an innocent explanation, but several together justify using the return policy instead of accepting the risk.

Bottom line for buyers

TECNO, Infinix, and itel phones are not automatically unsafe, and they are not automatically safe. Google’s certification directory and certification requirements support a conditional yes for a specific, certified device. The decision becomes reliable only after you verify that model’s remaining security support, local network compatibility, privacy settings, seller legitimacy, and warranty and repair access. Treat certification as the starting point of due diligence—not the end of it.
