Yes. The Secret Lair x Street Fighter cards are legal in Commander when the individual card satisfies Commander’s normal requirements: it fits the commander’s color identity, does not violate the singleton rule, and is not on the current Commander ban list. The Street Fighter artwork, Secret Lair product label, and mechanically unique design do not make a card illegal. Ryu and Chun-Li can be used as commanders because they are printed as legendary creatures, provided the rest of the deck follows those same rules.
Why the Street Fighter cards are legal
Wizards of the Coast announced the Street Fighter designs as mechanically unique Magic cards in its 2021 Magic Showcase coverage. That phrase describes the cards’ rules text: they are not merely alternate-art versions of cards that already existed. They have their own names, abilities and gameplay identities. It does not mean they are outside the normal Magic card pool.
Commander is an Eternal-style format, so cards remain usable after they leave the Standard environment unless a specific rule excludes them. Secret Lair is a product line, not a separate legality category. A card from that product is checked under the same Commander rules as a card from a regular expansion.

You do not have to replace the Street Fighter printing before putting it in a Commander deck.

The four tests that determine Commander legality
Check the card itself rather than its crossover theme. These are the tests that matter for a deck list.
| Test | What to check | Result if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Commander eligibility | The card must be a legal commander, normally a legendary creature or a card that explicitly says it can be your commander. | It may be included in the 99 if otherwise legal, but it cannot lead the deck unless its text permits that. |
| Color identity | Compare every color in the card’s mana cost, color indicator and relevant rules text with the commander’s color identity. | The card cannot be included in that deck. |
| Singleton construction | Commander normally permits only one card with a given name, apart from basic lands and effects that specifically change that rule. | Remove additional copies from the deck. |
| Ban list | Check the current Commander ban list for that exact card. | A banned card cannot be played in a normal Commander game. |
None of these tests asks whether the card depicts a Street Fighter character or came in a Secret Lair box. They apply equally to a Street Fighter card and its equivalent in-Magic printing.
Color identity comes first when building around a commander
Color identity is broader than the color of the card’s frame or artwork. Mana symbols in the mana cost and rules text count, as do a color indicator and other characteristics that establish a card’s colors. Reminder text does not add colors. A card is legal only when every color in its identity is contained in the commander’s identity.

For example, if you choose a mono-color commander, a Street Fighter card with an off-color mana symbol in its cost or rules text cannot be placed in the 99, even if the card’s ability would otherwise be useful. If the commander has several colors, the card must still stay within that exact combination; being “close” is not enough.

Singleton rules still apply
A Commander deck has 100 cards, including its commander, and normally contains no more than one card with the same name. The special product treatment does not grant a second copy. If you own the foil and nonfoil versions of the same Street Fighter card, those are two physical copies of one card name, not permission to play both in a normal singleton list.
When Wizards supplies an equivalent in-Magic version, it is an alternative game piece for the same design. Select the printing you want to use for your legal card slot; the alternative version is not a requirement and should not be treated as a way to bypass singleton restrictions.
The current ban list overrides product availability
A card can be officially printed, sold as a single and still be unavailable in Commander if the format’s rules committee has banned it. Bans can change independently of Secret Lair releases, so check the current Commander ban list when registering a new deck or returning to an old one. The product’s age, scarcity or collector value has no bearing on that check.
Can Ryu or Chun-Li be your commander?
Yes. Ryu and Chun-Li are printed as legendary creatures, which makes each eligible to occupy the command zone under the ordinary Commander rule. You do not need a separate “Universes Within” card to use either character as your commander.

The commander choice still determines the deck’s color identity. Read the printed mana cost, color indicator and rules text on the exact card you are using, then build the remaining 99 cards inside that identity. A card that is legal in a Ryu deck is not automatically legal in a Chun-Li deck, and the reverse is also true.
As with any commander, the card begins in the command zone, can be cast from there, and may return there under Commander’s replacement effect when it would go to another zone. Those command-zone procedures do not change because the card has crossover artwork.
Do you need the in-Magic version?
No. Wizards presented the in-Magic versions as equivalent game pieces, not mandatory replacements. The Street Fighter printing remains usable when the card itself meets Commander’s rules. An in-Magic version can be useful if your group prefers its artwork or setting, but it does not provide a legality upgrade.

How to check a Street Fighter card before adding it
- Read the card name and type line. Confirm whether it is a legendary creature or otherwise states that it can be your commander. If it is not commander-eligible, place it in the 99 instead of the command zone.
- Determine color identity. Inspect the mana cost, color indicator and rules text for all colored mana symbols and compare them with your commander’s identity.
- Search the current ban list. Use the exact card name, including punctuation and any distinctive subtitle, rather than relying on the product name.
- Apply singleton rules. Keep one copy of the card name in the 100-card list unless a specific Commander rule or card effect gives you an exception.
- Confirm the deck count. Count the commander and the 99 together. A legal card can still make the deck illegal if it pushes the total above or below 100.
- Choose the physical version. Street Fighter artwork, an equivalent in-Magic printing, foil and nonfoil are presentation choices after the rules checks are complete.
Common misconceptions
“Mechanically unique” means “not legal in Commander”
It does not. “Mechanically unique” means Wizards created new rules text for the design. Commander can use mechanically unique cards as long as they are in the format’s legal card pool and pass the commander, color-identity, singleton and ban-list tests.
Secret Lair cards need a special permission rule
They do not. Secret Lair identifies how the card was distributed. It is not a Commander exemption, restriction or house-rule designation. The normal format rules are sufficient.
The in-Magic version is the only tournament-safe option
There is no such requirement in the legality test described by Wizards’ policy. The Street Fighter card is an official game piece. An equivalent in-Magic version is an optional alternative, not a prerequisite for playing the design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA playgroup can still say no
Commander is commonly played as a social format, and a group can agree to house rules before a game. A group might choose to avoid crossover settings, Secret Lair products or particular power levels. That is a local preference, not evidence that the Street Fighter cards are banned by the format itself. Ask before the game if your group has a custom card-pool rule.

Owning two versions automatically permits two copies
Different artwork and finishes do not create extra copies. Treat the versions as equivalent game pieces for the purpose of choosing the card you want to play, and follow the deck’s singleton limit rather than using presentation differences as a loophole.
Practical deck examples
Ryu in the command zone
Put the Ryu card in the command zone, determine Ryu’s color identity from the printed card, and choose 99 other cards whose identities fit within it. You may use the Street Fighter printing or the equivalent in-Magic version as the physical card representing that design. The rest of the deck must still be singleton and free of currently banned cards.
Chun-Li in the 99
You can play Chun-Li as one of the 99 instead of as your commander. In that case, the deck’s color identity comes from its actual commander, and Chun-Li must fit inside that identity. Her Street Fighter presentation does not expand the commander’s allowed colors.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A card that fails the commander test
If a Street Fighter card is not legendary and does not say it can be your commander, it cannot lead the deck under the normal rule. That card may still be legal in the 99 after passing the color-identity, singleton and ban-list checks. The crossover theme does not change the type line.
What to bring to a Commander game
- A 100-card deck, including one commander when using the traditional Commander structure.
- Only cards whose color identities fit the commander.
- No extra copy of a Street Fighter design merely because one copy is foil and another is nonfoil.
- A quick confirmation that none of the cards is on the current Commander ban list.
- A conversation with the table if the group uses house rules about crossover cards or Secret Lair products.
Once those checks are complete, the Street Fighter printing is simply the version of the card you chose to play. Its artwork and distribution history affect presentation and collecting, while Commander legality is controlled by the same deck-building rules used for every other official Magic card.
