Sometimes—but only when both the flooring maker’s care instructions and the manual for your exact cleaner permit steam on that floor. “Sealed” alone does not guarantee safety: the finish, seams, installation, condition, and appliance’s heat and moisture all matter. Never steam-clean unsealed or unfinished wood.
Why “sealed” does not automatically mean steam-safe
Sealing can reduce a floor’s exposure to moisture, but it does not establish that every finish, joint, adhesive, or installation can withstand hot steam. A floor may also be worn, damaged, waxed, or otherwise sensitive. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s current care instructions; if they prohibit steam, do not use it. Shark likewise advises checking the floor maker’s use-and-care guidance before using its steam mops (Shark’s steam-mop floor guidance).
Steam and moisture can affect wood, gaps, adhesives, and surface finishes. Waxed surfaces may lose sheen. Do not use steam on unsealed or unfinished wood, or on a floor whose condition or construction makes its resistance to heat and moisture uncertain.
What manufacturers say about specific machines
Manufacturer statements apply to the named model and are not independent proof that a particular floor in your home is compatible. Check the current manual for the exact appliance you own.

How to decide whether to use one
- Identify the floor and finish. Find the flooring maker’s care instructions, including any restrictions for steam. If the maker prohibits steam, do not use it.
- Check the exact cleaner model’s manual. Confirm that it explicitly permits your floor type and follow its specified mode. A claim for another model does not establish compatibility.
- Rule out vulnerable surfaces. Do not steam unsealed or unfinished wood. Avoid steam where the finish, seams, adhesives, or floor condition may be vulnerable to heat or moisture.
- Follow the operating instructions. Sweep or vacuum first if the manual recommends it. Use the permitted floor-appropriate setting, keep the machine moving, and do not leave a hot or damp head stationary on the floor.
- Test only when allowed. If both sets of instructions permit it, try an inconspicuous area first. Stop if you notice moisture intrusion, raised grain, rippling, loss of sheen, or another change.
- Choose another method if uncertain. Use a non-steam cleaning method approved by the flooring maker if you cannot confirm compatibility.
What “wet-dry vacuum” means in this context
These machines combine steam or floor washing with vacuum pickup, but their designs and modes vary. For example, the Symphony 1132 can vacuum and steam simultaneously or separately, while the SCV 4 offers dry operation and steam modes with and without extraction. The word “vacuum” does not mean that a machine removes all moisture, nor does it make steam safe for every floor.
