Yes—but “stainless” means resistant to staining and corrosion, not impossible to mark. Fingerprints, grease, food residue and water spots are usually ordinary surface soil. Brown or orange discoloration can also result when the protective surface layer is damaged, when iron-bearing water dries on the appliance, or when unsuitable cleaners leave deposits or corrosion.
The safest approach is to identify the finish first, start with mild detergent and warm water, wipe as directed with the grain, and dry completely. Traditional stainless, fingerprint-resistant stainless, black stainless and other coated finishes do not necessarily tolerate the same products.
What “stainless steel” actually means
Stainless steel appliances contain chromium. When chromium is exposed to oxygen, it forms an extremely thin chromium-oxide layer on the surface. GE Appliances describes this layer as invisible and self-healing when the surface is cared for correctly. It is the reason the metal resists staining and corrosion better than ordinary steel.

That protective layer is not a force field. Oils, dust, food particles and mineral deposits can sit on top of it and remain visible. Scratches, chloride-containing chemicals, aggressive abrasives, steel particles and prolonged moisture can damage the surface or interfere with its protection. “Stainless” therefore describes resistance, not immunity.

A fingerprint does not mean the metal has failed. Skin oils change how light reflects from the brushed surface, so a clean but unpolished panel can still show smears. Water spots are often mineral or iron deposits left behind after evaporation. Surface rust is a different condition, but an orange mark should not automatically be diagnosed as rust without cleaning a small area safely first.
Finish type determines what you can use
Manufacturers use several finishes under the stainless-steel label. Check the owner’s manual or the support page for the exact model before applying a polish, stain remover or abrasive.
| Finish | What it is | Important care implication |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional stainless | Exposed stainless with a directional brushed grain | Mild soap, warm water, a nonabrasive sponge or soft cloth, wiping with the grain, rinsing and thorough drying are the conservative routine. A maker-approved stainless cleaner may help with fingerprints, oil, water spots and food buildup. |
| Fingerprint-resistant stainless | Stainless with a clear protective coating; GE and Whirlpool describe coated versions of this finish | Do not assume ordinary stainless polish is safe. Abrasive, chlorine, ammonia, acidic, alkaline and solvent-based products can scratch, dull or attack the clear coat. |
| Black stainless | A darker decorative finish that may include a coating over the metal | Care instructions vary by model. Treat it as a coated finish until the manual confirms otherwise; a cleaner intended for bare traditional stainless can damage its appearance. |
| Foil or other coated panels | A nonmetal decorative surface made to resemble stainless | Use only the cleaning method specified for that appliance. Metal polishes and abrasive pads can permanently alter the coating. |
Why fingerprints, stains and rust-like marks appear
Fingerprints and smudges
Finger marks are surface oils mixed with normal dust. GE groups fingerprints with ordinary dirt and recommends mild detergent and warm water for everyday cleaning. Smudges may look worse on a directional brushed finish because wiping across the grain creates visible streaks.
Oil and food residue
Cooking oil, sauce, starch and dried food can form a sticky film. Whirlpool identifies oil buildup and food buildup as marks that a purpose-made cleaner can remove from traditional stainless when the product is allowed by the appliance maker. Dried residue may need several gentle passes rather than one aggressive scrub.
Water spots and discoloration
Water that is left to evaporate can leave minerals behind. Whirlpool notes that water may contain iron and that water not fully dried from traditional stainless can contribute to discoloration. Hard-water spots can therefore look like a stain even when the steel itself is intact.

Surface rust or oxidized stains
Rust-like marks can develop when the protective layer is damaged or when iron-bearing material remains on the surface. Steel wool, carbon-steel brushes and other ferrous particles are a particular hazard: GE warns that particles can adhere to stainless and then begin to rust. The visible color alone does not prove whether the cause is embedded iron, oxidation, food residue or a damaged coating.
A safe cleaning workflow
Use this sequence for a mark whose cause is uncertain. Stop if the manual gives a different instruction for your model or finish.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the finish. Find the model number and read the care section in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support documentation. Confirm whether the panel is traditional stainless, fingerprint-resistant, black stainless or another coating.
- Remove loose debris. Wipe away crumbs and grit with a clean, soft, damp cloth. Dragging grit across the panel can create scratches.
- Start with mild detergent and warm water. For traditional stainless and for any finish whose manual permits it, use a small amount of mild dish detergent in warm water with a nonabrasive sponge or soft cloth. This is the least aggressive manufacturer-backed starting point for fingerprints and everyday soil.
- Follow the grain. On brushed traditional stainless, wipe evenly in the visible grain direction. GE also directs users to work along the grain when treating certain oxidized stains. Do not scrub in circles or across the grain.
- Rinse and dry completely. Wipe away detergent with fresh water, then dry with a clean soft or microfiber cloth. Drying removes cleaner residue and prevents water and iron deposits from evaporating on the panel.
- Escalate only when the finish and mark justify it. A manufacturer-approved stainless cleaner can be used on traditional stainless for fingerprints, oil, water spots or food buildup, following its label. A rust-treatment method should be reserved for a confirmed or strongly suspected oxidized stain and should not be transferred automatically to a coated finish.
Routine care for each finish
Traditional stainless steel
Use warm soapy water and a nonabrasive sponge or clean soft cloth. Move with the grain, rinse with fresh water and dry fully. If a stainless-steel cleaner is allowed by the manual, apply it as directed and keep it off adjacent plastic trim and rubber gaskets. Whirlpool advises cleaning accidental contact with those parts using mild detergent and warm water.
Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel
The clear coat changes the risk calculation. GE warns against stainless-steel cleaners on its fingerprint-resistant finish and lists abrasive cleaners, bleach or chlorine products, window sprays, ammonia, vinegar or other acidic cleaners, oven cleaners and alkaline cleaners among products to avoid. Whirlpool likewise warns that abrasives, chlorine bleach, steel wool, gritty cloths and paper towels can scratch or dull its clear coat. Use the exact method in the appliance manual, usually a soft cloth and a mild permitted solution.

Black stainless and other decorative coatings
Do not infer compatibility from the word “stainless.” A dark or colored panel can have a coating that reacts differently from exposed brushed steel. Unless the manual explicitly permits a product, use a soft cloth and the mildest approved cleaner, test an inconspicuous area, and avoid pressure that could burnish the finish.
How to handle a rust-like or oxidized stain
Read the manual before attempting treatment. GE describes two options for certain oxidized stains or surface rust on compatible stainless surfaces: a paste made with baking soda, or a liquid cleanser containing oxalic acid. These directions are not automatically suitable for fingerprint-resistant, black stainless or other coated panels.
Baking-soda paste
Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub gently along the grain with a soft, nonabrasive cloth. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry completely. Gentle pressure matters: trying to remove a stubborn mark by scrubbing harder can create a larger visible patch or scratch the surface.
Liquid oxalic-acid cleanser
Use only when the appliance instructions and the cleanser label allow it. Follow the label’s handling, ventilation and rinsing directions, apply the least amount needed, work along the grain and rinse completely. Never combine it with bleach, chlorine products, ammonia or other cleaners.

- Leaves no streaks and resists fingerprint smudges
- Protects and enhances the appearance of stainless steel surface
- Cleans, polishes and protects all types of stainless steel appliances and surfaces

When to stop
If the mark remains after a cautious, approved treatment, if the coating changes color or texture, or if the surface is deeply scratched or pitted, stop experimenting. Further chemical or abrasive work can make the damage permanent; the manufacturer or an appliance technician can identify whether the panel needs replacement.
Products and tools to avoid
- Steel wool and steel brushes: carbon-steel particles can lodge in stainless and later rust.
- Chlorine and chloride-containing cleaners: GE cautions that they can damage stainless protection.
- Bleach, ammonia, alcohol and mineral spirits: GE lists these among products to avoid in its general stainless-care guidance unless the model’s instructions specifically say otherwise.
- Abrasive powders, scouring pads and gritty cloths: they can scratch bare steel and dull a clear coat.
- Paper towels on coated finishes: Whirlpool warns that they can scratch or dull its fingerprint-resistant clear coat.
- Vinegar and other acids on fingerprint-resistant finishes: GE specifically warns against acidic cleaners on its coated finish.
- Oven cleaners and strong alkaline products: these can attack coatings and are specifically excluded in GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance.
- Unapproved polish on trim and seals: stainless polish can damage plastic trim or rubber gaskets; wipe accidental contact promptly with mild detergent and warm water.
Choosing a cleaner by the job
| Mark or task | Most conservative starting point | Key restriction |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprints or light dust | Warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth | Confirm that the finish allows detergent; dry after rinsing. |
| Oil or food film on traditional stainless | Warm soapy water; a maker-approved stainless cleaner if needed | Follow the product label and keep polish off plastic and rubber. |
| Water spots | Fresh-water wipe followed by complete drying; use only a finish-approved cleaner for persistent deposits | Iron in water can contribute to discoloration, so do not leave the surface wet. |
| Possible surface rust or oxidation | Manual-approved baking-soda paste or liquid oxalic-acid cleanser on compatible exposed stainless | Use gentle grain-direction rubbing, rinse thoroughly and do not apply automatically to coated finishes. |
| Unknown mark on fingerprint-resistant or black stainless | Stop and consult the model’s care instructions; use only the listed mild method | Ordinary stainless polish, acids, bleach and abrasives may damage the coating. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The panel looks streaky after cleaning
Residual detergent or polish is a common cause. Rinse with fresh water, wipe in the grain direction and dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Do not add more product until residue is removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA mark returns after it dries
That pattern points to water or cleaner deposits rather than a one-time fingerprint. Rinse more completely and dry immediately. If the appliance is near a sink or steamer, reduce standing moisture and wipe splashes promptly.
The surface became dull after polishing
On a coated finish, the clear coat may have been scratched or chemically altered. Stop using the product, document the model and cleaner, and ask the manufacturer whether the panel can be restored. Repeated polishing usually cannot recreate a damaged coating.

Orange spots appear after using a wire brush
Ferrous particles from the brush may have transferred to the surface and rusted. Do not continue with the brush. Follow the manual’s approved surface-rust procedure, beginning with the gentlest compatible method.
Habits that prevent new stains
- Wipe fingerprints and cooking splashes when they occur instead of allowing oil or food to harden.
- Keep a dedicated soft or microfiber cloth for the appliance so grit from other cleaning jobs is not transferred.
- Rinse away detergent and dry after every wet cleaning session.
- Wipe with the grain on brushed traditional stainless.
- Keep steel wool, carbon-steel brushes and gritty pads away from the appliance.
- Store cleaners so bleach, acids, ammonia and oven products are not accidentally substituted for the approved cleaner.
- Check the manual before changing products, especially after replacing a door, panel or handle with a different finish.
When a stain is actually permanent damage
Cleaning can remove soil, mineral deposits and some surface oxidation. It cannot reliably reverse deep scratches, pitting, peeling clear coat or a permanently discolored coating. If the grain pattern is visibly cut, the surface feels rough, or the color changes outside the original mark, more scrubbing is unlikely to help. At that point, preserving the surrounding finish is more important than trying a stronger chemical.
