Yes—the Sony WH-1000XM5 are a practical choice for flying. Sony specifically describes their noise cancelling for airplane noise, rates playback at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled, and provides a wired mode for flights where Bluetooth use is restricted.
Those are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of silence or a guarantee that every traveler will get the stated battery life. Your result also depends on fit, the aircraft’s audio socket, charging habits and the instructions of the flight crew.
The short verdict
The WH-1000XM5 make sense for airplane travel when your priorities are reducing the steady engine and cabin rumble, avoiding frequent charging and retaining a usable fallback when wireless listening is not permitted. Sony’s Help Guide says the headset can be used as noise-cancelling headphones through the supplied headphone cable while powered on, including on an airplane where Bluetooth devices may be restricted.

Why they work well on a plane
Noise cancelling targets the constant cabin rumble
Airplanes produce a fairly continuous low-frequency sound from engines and airflow. Active noise cancelling is designed to counter that type of sound, and Sony explicitly markets the WH-1000XM5’s noise cancelling for airplane use. In practical terms, this can make music, podcasts or a film easier to hear at a lower volume and can make resting less tiring.
Noise cancelling is not a mute button. It is less predictable with intermittent speech, a crying child, service-cart noise, clattering dishes or announcements. Keep enough awareness for safety instructions and follow any direction from the crew. Do not assume that activating ANC means you can ignore an announcement.
Battery capacity is generous, but the number is a maximum
Sony’s current product specifications list up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. These are maximum manufacturer figures under specified test conditions, not independent flight tests. Actual runtime can change with volume, Bluetooth behavior, temperature, call use and battery age.

Thirty hours is enough for many individual long-haul journeys, but itinerary length is not the only issue. A delayed departure, an airport connection and a return trip without access to a charger can consume more time than expected. Treat the quoted figure as planning headroom rather than a guarantee.
Wired listening provides an important fallback
The supplied headphone cable lets you connect the headset to an aircraft seat system or another audio source. Sony states that you should leave the headset turned on if you want noise cancelling while using the cable. Wired audio continues to work when the headset is turned off, but noise cancelling does not.

This distinction matters on flights that restrict Bluetooth. You can comply with the restriction, connect the cable and still use ANC, provided the headset has enough charge to remain powered on. The cable also protects you from Bluetooth pairing problems or entertainment systems that do not support wireless headphones.
Bluetooth use is subject to crew instructions
The WH-1000XM5 use Bluetooth 5.2, but the presence of that feature does not override airline rules. Sony’s precautions tell passengers to follow the flight crew’s instructions about whether wireless devices may be used and when. If the crew asks for Bluetooth to be disabled, switch to the cable or turn the headset off.

How to prepare the WH-1000XM5 for a flight
1. Charge and test before leaving
- Give the headset a full charge. Sony lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge, although real charging time can differ.
- Play audio for several minutes in both Bluetooth and wired modes. This confirms that the cable, source device and controls work before you reach the airport.
- Check that noise cancelling remains active when the cable is connected and the headset is powered on. If you turn the headset off, expect wired audio without ANC.
- Download films, music or podcasts to your phone or tablet. An offline library avoids relying on airport or onboard internet.
- Pack the supplied cable in an easily reachable pocket rather than burying it in checked luggage.
2. Check the aircraft audio connection
Seat audio sockets are not uniform. Some aircraft use a standard single headphone socket; others use a dual-prong airline connector, and some newer cabins use a different arrangement altogether. Sony says the adapter is not included. That does not mean every passenger needs one: the requirement depends on the aircraft and seat.
Look up the aircraft type and cabin information for your booking, ask the airline, or inspect the seat when you board. If your seat has a dual-prong socket and your cable has a single plug, you will need a compatible 3.5 mm airline adapter to hear the entertainment system. Do not buy an adapter solely because the headphones omit one; first establish what your particular aircraft uses.

3. Pair only when permitted
At the gate or after the crew permits wireless use, pair the headphones with your phone or tablet and verify that sound comes from the WH-1000XM5 rather than the device’s speakers. Keep the cable available even after a successful pairing. Wireless permissions can change during different phases of flight, while the wired fallback remains available.
4. Connect to the seat system
- Wait until the crew allows use of personal electronics and the seat system is active.
- Plug the supplied cable into the headset and the aircraft socket, using an airline adapter only if that socket requires one.
- Turn the headset on. This enables noise cancelling during wired listening.
- Select the aircraft’s audio source and raise the volume gradually. Aircraft systems can have different output levels, so avoid starting at maximum volume.
- If there is no sound, reseat both plugs, check the seat’s volume control and test the cable with another source. A missing or incompatible adapter is a common cause when the connection appears physically loose.
Using ANC during the flight
For steady engine noise, put the headphones on with the earcups centered over your ears and allow the seal to settle before judging the result. A poor seal from glasses, hair or an incorrect position can let more sound through and can make ANC seem less effective.
Keep the volume moderate. ANC can reduce the amount of competing cabin noise, so you may not need to play music as loudly as you would without it. Lower listening levels are also useful when you need to hear a crew announcement quickly.
When an announcement begins, pause your content or remove one earcup if necessary. Noise cancelling should be treated as a comfort feature, not a reason to disregard safety information.
Battery planning for long itineraries
Use the 30-hour ANC-on figure as an upper-bound planning number. A simple plan is to start with a full charge, use ANC during the noisy portions of the journey and switch it off during quieter airport waiting periods if you need to conserve power. Sony’s 40-hour ANC-off maximum gives more endurance, but it is still a manufacturer estimate.

Do not wait until boarding to discover that the headset is empty. Charging before departure is especially important because seat power availability differs by aircraft and class, and not every flight offers a convenient charging point. If the battery does run out, wired audio remains possible, but ANC will no longer function while the headset is off.

Not established as a universal result
The available flight-use firsthand material is a single 2022 reviewer video, which is anecdotal rather than a controlled comparison. It cannot prove that every passenger will experience the same noise reduction, battery life or comfort. There is also no robust independent aircraft comparison here that measures the WH-1000XM5 against multiple headphones on cabin-noise reduction, long-wear comfort or socket compatibility.
Comfort is particularly personal. Head shape, glasses, hairstyle, heat and how long you wear the headphones all affect whether the fit works for you. If possible, buy from a seller with a return policy that allows you to assess the fit at home before committing to a long trip.

Bluetooth is not allowed
Follow the crew’s direction, turn off Bluetooth use and connect the supplied cable. Keep the headset powered on if you want ANC. If the battery is depleted, you can still hear wired audio, but ANC is unavailable.
The seat system has no audio
Confirm that the aircraft has enabled the system, check the seat volume and push the plug fully into the socket. If the aircraft uses two contacts and your cable has one, use a compatible airline adapter. Try another source to distinguish a seat-socket issue from a cable issue.

Noise reduction seems weak
Reposition the earcups so they fully surround your ears and remove anything preventing a seal. Check that the headset is powered on and ANC is enabled. Remember that ANC is most effective against continuous low-frequency sound and is not expected to erase speech or every sudden noise.
The battery ends before landing
Continue listening through the cable with the headset off, or switch to downloaded content on another device. For future flights, begin with a full charge, reduce unnecessary Bluetooth use and reserve ANC for the noisiest parts of the journey.
Who should choose them for flying?
The WH-1000XM5 are a sensible match for travelers who want over-ear ANC, a long stated runtime and a wired option for seat entertainment. They are especially practical if you are prepared to check your aircraft’s socket and carry the supplied cable.

They may be a poor fit if you need guaranteed silence, cannot tolerate over-ear pressure or expect a universal plug-and-play connection on every aircraft. In those cases, evaluate fit personally and verify the seat connection before departure rather than relying on the model name alone.
