They are worth it for a specific PS5 player, not as a universal replacement for a gaming headset. Sony’s PULSE Explore earbuds make the strongest case when you want true wireless, low-latency PlayStation Link audio, direct PlayStation Portal support, and the ability to mix PlayStation audio with Bluetooth audio from a phone. Their roughly $200-class pricing is harder to justify if you need long uninterrupted sessions, active noise cancellation, a strong boom microphone, or over-ear comfort.

In practical terms, buy them when the PlayStation-specific connection is a feature you will use often. Otherwise, compare an over-ear PlayStation headset, a noise-cancelling gaming earbud, or a cheaper wired model—and consider waiting for a sale.

What you get for the money

PULSE Explore is a pair of in-ear gaming earbuds built around Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless system. Sony positions PlayStation Link as a low-latency, lossless connection for gaming. Independent testing from SoundGuys and RTINGS also identifies the transmitter connection’s latency as a major strength, so game sounds and actions stay closely aligned on PS5.

The key feature is not simply that the earbuds are wireless. It is that the PlayStation Link connection is designed to work directly with the PS5 and PlayStation Portal without adding a separate Bluetooth transmitter to the console or handheld. The included USB adapter handles PS5, PC and Mac connections. Portal connects directly over PlayStation Link. Sony also supports Bluetooth pairing, including simultaneous audio from a PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device. That can let you hear game audio while keeping a phone connected for another audio source, although how useful the mix is depends on your particular phone and listening setup.

What is in the box

Sony’s US listing includes the earbuds, PlayStation Link USB adapter, charging case, several ear-tip sizes, USB cable and manual. The UK listing also includes a carrying case. Package contents can vary by region, so check the local listing before assuming a case or any other accessory is included.

Compatibility at a glance

Device Connection What to expect
PS5 PlayStation Link USB adapter Purpose-built low-latency wireless audio; the adapter occupies a USB port.
PlayStation Portal Direct PlayStation Link No added Bluetooth transmitter is required.
PC or Mac PlayStation Link USB adapter Use the included adapter for wireless audio.
Phone or other Bluetooth device Bluetooth Can be paired alongside a PlayStation Link device for simultaneous audio.

How to set them up with a PS5 or Portal

  1. Charge the earbuds and case. Put both earbuds in the case and connect the case with the supplied USB cable.
  2. Connect the PlayStation Link adapter. Insert the included adapter into a PS5 USB port. For PC or Mac, connect it to an available USB port.
  3. Pair the earbuds. Follow the on-screen or device instructions until the earbuds are selected as the PlayStation Link audio device.
  4. Adjust console audio. In PS5 settings, check the audio-output device and microphone input so game sound and chat are routed where you expect.
  5. Connect to Portal. Portal uses PlayStation Link directly, so you do not need the PS5 adapter attached to the handheld.
  6. Add Bluetooth audio if needed. Pair a phone or other Bluetooth device through the earbuds’ Bluetooth process. Test the balance between PlayStation Link and Bluetooth audio before relying on it during a call or stream.

The important distinction is that Portal support is direct PlayStation Link support. A generic Bluetooth gaming earbud may require an additional transmitter, and a transmitter can add cost, occupy a port and complicate a portable setup.

Gaming performance: latency is the main technical advantage

Sony markets PlayStation Link as low-latency and lossless. SoundGuys describes the PULSE Explore as one of the first true-wireless designs to use planar magnetic drivers and calls the PlayStation Link latency a strength. RTINGS also reports low latency when the transmitter is used. These are the reasons to choose PULSE Explore over ordinary Bluetooth earbuds for PS5 play: explosions, dialogue and menu sounds should arrive without the distracting delay that can occur with standard Bluetooth modes.

  • Next Generation Gaming Audio
  • Multi-Device Connectivity

That advantage is most noticeable in games where timing matters, rhythm games, competitive shooters and fast menu navigation. It does not make the earbuds a competitive advantage by itself; your television, monitor, game mix and connection environment still affect what you perceive. The useful claim is narrower: PlayStation Link is the connection to prioritize when you want wireless PS5 audio without obvious Bluetooth lag.

Sound quality is a review judgment, not a guarantee

The planar magnetic driver design is an unusual specification for true wireless gaming earbuds and is part of the product’s premium positioning. Sound quality remains subjective, however. SoundGuys, TechRadar and RTINGS provide independent assessments, but their impressions should be treated as reviewer judgments rather than a universal ranking. Ear-tip seal, equalizer settings, game audio mix and your own hearing can change the result.

Microphone quality: acceptable for casual chat, weaker for serious multiplayer

PULSE Explore has two hidden microphones with Sony’s AI-enhanced noise-rejection processing. That gives you a built-in way to use voice chat without a boom arm, but it is also one of the clearest compromises.

TechRadar describes the microphones as serviceable for earbuds while noting that they do not compete with a dedicated boom microphone. RTINGS reports sub-par recording quality. If you play with friends occasionally, the microphones may be sufficient. If you spend long sessions in competitive team chat, stream, record commentary or need your voice to cut through background noise, compare an over-ear headset with a dedicated microphone.

Battery life, isolation and comfort limitations

Battery life

Sony rates the earbuds for up to five hours per charge, with up to 10 additional hours from the charging case. Those are manufacturer maximum claims, not a guaranteed runtime for every volume level, microphone use pattern or connection mode. TechRadar’s current gaming-earbuds guide characterizes the runtime as middling.

Five hours can cover a typical evening, but it is a poor fit for buyers who regularly play longer sessions without a break. The case extends total listening time, yet you still need to return the earbuds to it periodically. A headset rated for substantially longer continuous use may be more convenient for marathon sessions.

  • ALL DAY COMFORT: Light and compact to give you all-day comfort and designed for the ideal fit, for an exceptional all-round listening experience.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE & QUICK CHARGING: Up to 11 hours of battery life (up to 22hrs with case) with quick charging (5 min charge for up to 1 hour of playback).
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
  • STAY CONNECTED: Ambient Sound Mode keeps you aware of your surroundings.
  • EASY HANDS- FREE CALLING: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.

No active noise cancellation

Sony’s product information does not advertise active noise cancellation. SoundGuys and RTINGS both identify isolation or noise-cancellation limitations. The ear tips provide a passive seal, but they cannot deliver the same electronic low-frequency reduction as an ANC model. In a loud room, on public transport or beside a running fan, that can matter more than the low-latency connection.

Fit and everyday durability

Multiple ear-tip sizes are included, which helps you search for a reliable seal. It does not guarantee a comfortable fit: in-ear comfort depends on the shape of your ear and how securely the earbuds sit. SoundGuys also flags the earbuds as relatively bulky and notes that there is no stated IP rating. That makes them less compelling as general-purpose outdoor earbuds, especially if you need documented water or sweat resistance.

Price and value in context

Prices vary by country and date. The official Sony PlayStation UK product page showed £154.99 when accessed in 2026. That is a UK listed price and should not be treated as a current US price. SoundGuys referred to a $199 MSRP in its December 2023 review. TechRadar’s review listed $199.99, £199.99 and AU$329; those are review-era reference prices, not verified current street prices.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE WITH QUICK CHARGING: Keep your music and calls going all day with up to 37 hours of battery life (up to 9 hours with the earbuds and up to 28 hours with the charging case). A quick 3-minute charge gives you up to an extra hour of listening, so you’re always ready for what’s next.

At approximately $200 when sold near its original positioning, the earbuds need to deliver value through their PlayStation-specific features. If you own a Portal and use it frequently, direct PlayStation Link can justify paying more than you would for ordinary Bluetooth earbuds. If you mainly play on a PS5 connected to a television or monitor, the case is weaker because many competing headsets can provide wireless game audio while offering a better microphone, longer runtime or stronger isolation.

How PULSE Explore compares with the main alternatives

Alternative Best reason to choose it Important trade-off or qualification
PULSE Elite Over-ear PlayStation design, up to 30 hours of battery life and a retractable microphone; compatible with Portal. It is a headset rather than an in-ear product, so it will not suit people who specifically want earbuds.
INZONE Buds TechRadar identifies greater battery life and noise cancellation. They do not offer the same direct-to-Portal connection as PULSE Explore.
SteelSeries Tusq Wired earbuds with a detachable microphone, broad device compatibility and a lower listed price in TechRadar’s comparison. They are wired; confirm the current local price and the connection required for your PS5 setup.
SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds A 2026 TechRadar guide presents them as an all-round gaming-earbud option at a lower listed price than PULSE Explore. Verify current PS5 and Portal compatibility before buying; a broader feature set does not automatically mean direct PlayStation Link support.

These alternatives expose the decision clearly. PULSE Elite is the practical choice for long sessions and a conventional microphone. INZONE Buds are more attractive when ANC and battery endurance matter more than direct Portal pairing. Tusq is for buyers willing to trade wireless convenience for a wired, detachable-mic design. Arctis GameBuds deserve comparison when you want a wider gaming-earbud feature set, but Portal support must be checked rather than assumed.

Who should buy PULSE Explore

  • Portal owners: Direct PlayStation Link audio avoids adding a Bluetooth transmitter to the handheld.
  • Earbud users: You prefer an in-ear fit and do not want an over-ear headset.
  • Multi-device listeners: You will use simultaneous PlayStation Link and Bluetooth audio, such as game sound plus phone audio.
  • Latency-sensitive players: You want the low-latency behavior of the PlayStation Link adapter rather than ordinary Bluetooth audio.
  • Buyers who can find a discount: A sale improves the value proposition enough to offset the middling battery life and missing ANC.

Who should choose something else

  • Marathon players: Five hours per earbud charge may require a break sooner than you want.
  • Noisy-environment players: There is no advertised ANC, and passive isolation may not be enough.
  • Chat-heavy competitive players: The hidden microphones are less capable than a dedicated boom microphone according to independent reviews.
  • People who dislike in-ear devices: An over-ear headset will usually be easier to wear for extended sessions if you prefer that style.
  • Buyers seeking ordinary PS5 wireless audio: If you will not use Portal or PlayStation Link-specific features, alternatives may deliver better value.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm your local price and whether the package includes the accessories you need.
  2. Decide whether direct Portal pairing is a must-have or merely a nice-to-have.
  3. Measure your typical uninterrupted play session against the five-hour maximum claim.
  4. Be honest about microphone expectations: casual party chat and professional-quality voice capture are different requirements.
  5. Consider room noise. Without ANC, the ear-tip seal is your main isolation method.
  6. Check whether you prefer an in-ear fit before committing to a premium purchase.
  7. Compare the current price with an over-ear PlayStation headset and the gaming-earbud alternatives above.

Bottom line

Sony PULSE Explore is a focused PS5 accessory rather than the best all-purpose gaming headset. Its low-latency PlayStation Link connection, direct Portal support and simultaneous Bluetooth capability are genuinely useful advantages. The five-hour earbud rating, absent ANC, bulky in-ear fit and weaker microphone keep it from being an automatic recommendation at full price. Buy it when those PlayStation-specific features match how you play; otherwise, choose a headset or another gaming earbud that better fits your battery, microphone and isolation priorities.
