No evidence in the reviewed sources shows that Ray-Ban Meta glasses record every moment or use every image and voice interaction to train AI. They have distinct camera functions: gallery photos and videos for the wearer, and camera-based AI prompts that can send an image and spoken text for interpretation. Meta says some data may be used in protected form to improve products, but that is not proof that every prompt trains a model.
What happens when you use the glasses’ camera?
“Camera use” can mean two different things. A gallery capture creates a photo or video for the wearer to import or share. A camera-based AI request uses the view to answer a question. Treating those as one continuous stream sent to Meta would go beyond what the company’s published descriptions say.
| Use | What the sources describe | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery photo or video | Meta’s July 2026 explainer says captures stay on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. After import, they are stored in the phone’s gallery; sharing them with another service follows that service’s usual sharing context. | It is not a guarantee about every possible copy, backup, or retention practice outside the described flow. |
| Camera-based AI prompt | Meta’s multimodal system card describes the captured image and text produced from spoken words being passed to the AI model when the wearer asks a camera-based question. | Sending an image for a requested answer does not, by itself, show that the image is retained as training data. |
Meta says gallery photos and videos are visible to “You, and only you — unless you choose to share them.” That statement is about gallery media and is qualified by the import and sharing steps above; it should not be read as a description of every AI prompt or every service that may receive shared media.

Not necessarily. Meta says the front capture LED blinks for gallery photos and videos: briefly for a photo and continuously while recording video. The company says the capture LED has no off switch and that the glasses prevent capture if the light is covered.

The Ray-Ban US FAQ makes a separate, model-specific distinction for AI. It says newer models may use the camera to answer an AI question without activating the LED; first-generation glasses still illuminate the LED for some AI features because of hardware limitations. The exact behavior depends on the model and feature, so a blinking light is not a reliable signal that every camera-based AI interaction is happening.
Are camera images and voice commands used to train AI?
Meta describes training, delivering a requested feature, and improving products as related but distinct activities. Its multimodal system card says its models are trained using several kinds of information, including public information online, licensed material, and information from Meta products and services. The system card is older than the current FAQ and describes the general processing flow; it does not establish that every live image or spoken prompt becomes training data.

The Ray-Ban US FAQ says data may be used in protected form to improve products. It also says photos and videos used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. “Not saved in conversation history” does not mean “never processed,” and “used to improve products” does not specify that every image trains a foundation model. The reviewed sources do not give a percentage for how much smart-glasses footage or audio is used for training.

What Meta says about confidential processing
In a September 23, 2026 engineering post, Meta described “Private Processing,” a confidential-computing approach for certain AI workloads. Meta says data is processed inside confidential virtual machines and cannot be read from outside the protected memory, including by Meta. This is the company’s technical description; the available sources do not independently verify which features or regions use it, or whether it covers every data flow.

What can deletion controls do?
Meta says users can delete voice recordings and that deleted information will not be used for future model training. The company also cautions that removing information does not instantly alter a model that learned from it earlier: “If you delete a piece of information a model learned from, the model won’t change in that moment.” Deletion can affect future use under Meta’s stated policy, but it is not the same as making a trained model immediately forget.
The Ray-Ban FAQ directs users to an activity log for voice activity and says it can be downloaded. The cited pages do not establish one universal deletion or retention schedule for every data category or every country. Check the current controls and policy for your model and location rather than assuming a voice-recording control covers gallery media, AI prompts, and all other records.

What should wearers consider about people nearby?
Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says: “If you want to capture a photo or video, make sure that you ask for permission from those around you.” It also advises avoiding sensitive locations and places where people expect privacy. In a statement quoted by the Associated Press, Meta added: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.”
Those are practical norms, not a substitute for checking applicable law. Laws vary by location and circumstances, including whether a conversation is recorded. The AP reported on October 1, 2026, that California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposed bill that would have penalized secret recording in private spaces and required indicators on covered wearable devices beginning in 2028. The proposal did not become law. The same AP report said California was among roughly a dozen states requiring consent from both parties to record a conversation; that dated report is not a complete or current legal survey.

Why are smart glasses drawing wider scrutiny?
Concerns extend beyond the wearer’s data: a discreet camera can capture bystanders who did not choose to use an AI feature. In an October 5, 2026 report, the Associated Press described a Dutch eyewear retailer suspending sales and the UK Cinema Association introducing policies to prohibit or restrict camera-enabled smart glasses over privacy and film-piracy concerns. These are reported organizational responses, not a universal ban.
The AP also reported that more than 7 million Meta Ray-Ban glasses were sold in 2025. That is a reported sales figure, not a count of people recorded, images uploaded, or interactions used for training.
Quick Recap
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Supported: A camera-based AI question can send an image and spoken text to an AI model for interpretation.
- Supported: Gallery media and AI prompts have different described storage and processing paths, and indicator behavior varies by model and feature.
- Supported: Meta says some data may be used in protected form to improve products and says deleted voice recordings will not be used for future training.
- Not established: That every movement is recorded, that every camera view or voice interaction trains a model, or that one deletion control erases every kind of data from every system.
