In the United States, a signature placed in a PDF with Mac Preview can be legally binding. The federal ESIGN Act generally prevents a covered contract or signature from being rejected solely because it is electronic. Binding effect still depends on the signer’s intent, the transaction, applicable law, the document’s requirements, and whether the other party accepts electronic signing.
Preview is a PDF-markup tool, not a legal-certification or identity-verification service. It can insert a signature image or mark into a document, but the app itself does not prove who signed, what they intended, or that a recipient must accept the file.
What U.S. law actually says
The main federal starting point is the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN), found in 15 U.S.C. chapter 96. For a transaction in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, 15 U.S.C. § 7001(a)(1) says that “a signature, contract, or other record relating to such transaction may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form.” A contract also cannot be rejected solely because an electronic signature or electronic record was used to form it.
ESIGN defines an electronic signature broadly. Under 15 U.S.C. § 7006(5), it is “an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record.” The wording does not require a particular software brand, a scanned handwritten signature, or a cryptographic certificate.

A Preview mark can fit that definition when it is associated with the PDF and the person knowingly adopts it as a signature. That statutory definition does not, by itself, establish the signer’s identity or intent in a disputed case. Those facts are normally shown through the document, surrounding messages, witnesses, account records, or other evidence.
What ESIGN does not do
- It does not make every electronically marked document enforceable.
- It preserves other substantive legal requirements for the transaction.
- It generally does not force a person or organization to accept electronic records or signatures.
- It imposes conditions for some consumer disclosures delivered electronically.
- When a record must be retained, it requires an accurate, accessible, and reproducible electronic record.
State law, foreign law, the type of instrument, the parties’ agreement, and the transaction’s governing-law clause can change the analysis. The federal rule is therefore a general U.S. framework, not a universal answer for every country or document.
What Preview actually does
Apple’s Preview instructions describe a way to create and place a signature in a PDF. You can write on a Mac trackpad, capture a handwritten signature with the Mac camera, or use a nearby iPhone or iPad. After creating the signature, you select it from the Markup tools and click in the document to place it.
The result is an electronic mark associated with the PDF. Apple’s instructions explain how to use the feature; they do not state that Preview verifies identity, records a formal audit trail, applies a tamper-evident certificate, or guarantees legal enforceability. A recipient can therefore ask for additional evidence or require a different signing workflow.

Preview also does not decide whether the signer intended to be bound. If someone else had access to the Mac, if a signature image was copied without permission, or if the signer claims they never adopted the document, the legal dispute concerns evidence and circumstances rather than the name of the application.
Electronic signature versus digital signature
These terms are related but not interchangeable.

Calling a Preview mark “electronic” does not make it weak or invalid, and calling another method “digital” does not guarantee acceptance. Choose the method that matches the document, the counterparty’s instructions, and the level of identity and document-integrity evidence needed.
Conditions that affect whether a Preview signature will hold up
1. The signer intended to sign
Intent is central to the statutory definition. Opening a PDF and accidentally clicking a saved signature is different from reviewing the final terms and deliberately placing the signature to accept them. A typed name, drawn mark, or stored signature can all be relevant; the surrounding facts determine whether the person adopted it as a signature.

The mark should be placed on the document the parties intend to execute. Signing an outdated draft, a blank page, or a separate image file creates avoidable uncertainty about what was accepted. Use the exact final version identified by the transaction and avoid substituting pages after signing.

3. The transaction permits electronic execution
ESIGN does not erase requirements imposed by another statute, regulation, court rule, recording system, or contract. Some transactions call for witnesses, notarization, a particular acknowledgment, an original, a prescribed government form, or a specialized filing method. Those requirements must be checked separately.
4. The recipient accepts electronic signing
A recipient generally is not required by ESIGN to agree to electronic records or signatures. A company, court, agency, landlord, lender, or other counterparty may specify an approved platform, certificate, notarization procedure, or paper original. Ask before signing if the instructions are unclear; a valid electronic signature can still be unusable if the receiving process rejects it.
5. The record can be preserved and reproduced
When the law requires retention, § 7001(d) focuses on an electronic record that accurately reflects the information and remains accessible and reproducible later. Saving only a screenshot or a low-quality image may not preserve the complete agreement. Keep the completed PDF in its original readable form and retain the related communications that show how it was sent and accepted.

- Obtain the final PDF. Confirm that the file contains the complete terms, attachments, exhibits, and correct parties before adding a signature.
- Open it in Preview. If another application opens PDFs by default, use the file’s Open With menu and select Preview.
- Show the Markup tools. Select the Markup toolbar and choose the signature control. macOS labels can vary slightly by release.
- Create or select a signature. Preview can capture one from the trackpad, Mac camera, or a nearby iPhone or iPad. Review the captured mark before using it.
- Place it on the signature line. Click in the intended location, then resize or move it so it does not cover dates, initials, terms, or required fields.
- Complete other required fields. Add the date, printed name, initials, or other information requested by the document. Do not alter substantive terms after signing.
- Save a new completed copy. Use a clear filename and preserve the signed PDF. Keeping the unsigned source separately can help show which version was executed.
- Return it through the instructed channel. Follow the recipient’s email, portal, or upload directions and retain the sent message or submission confirmation.
These steps create a practical execution record, but they do not replace a required witness, notary, filing, or approved signing system.

Evidence to keep with the signed PDF
If enforceability is later questioned, the PDF is only one part of the evidence. Keep a reasonably complete file containing:
- the final signed PDF and, where useful, the immediately preceding unsigned version;
- emails or messages identifying the document, version, and signing request;
- the transmission and receipt record, including portal confirmations when available;
- communications showing that the signer reviewed, negotiated, or discussed the terms;
- any instructions confirming that electronic signatures were acceptable; and
- the file in a format that remains readable and can be reproduced accurately.
Do not edit the completed PDF merely to correct a typo after it has been returned. If a material change is needed, ask the parties whether to issue a corrected version and sign again so the execution history is clear.

Use extra caution when the document involves a will or other testamentary instrument, a family-law matter, a court filing, an oath or notarization, real-estate recording, a government form, a regulated transaction, or a counterparty with technical signing rules. The fact that ESIGN protects electronic signatures in covered transactions does not answer every special requirement in these categories.

- identity checks tied to a government document or account;
- explicit consent and disclosure screens;
- an independent timestamp and detailed audit history;
- tamper detection showing whether the file changed after signing;
- multiple-signatory routing and completion records; or
- an exportable record designed for a regulated retention period.
Those features can improve evidence and workflow control. They are not a guarantee that a court will enforce the underlying agreement, and their usefulness depends on the recipient’s requirements and governing law.

Common problems and practical fixes
The recipient says the signature is not acceptable
Ask which requirement was not met: a particular platform, certificate, notary, file format, naming convention, or internal approval. Do not assume that the recipient is legally compelled to accept the Preview file; follow the stated process or obtain legal advice about the disagreement.
The signature looks like an image pasted onto the page
That appearance does not automatically decide validity. The relevant questions are whether the signer adopted the mark with intent, whether it is associated with the record, and whether the transaction permits electronic execution. Preserve the surrounding evidence rather than relying on the visual appearance alone.
The PDF was changed after signing
Stop circulating the altered copy. Compare it with the signed version, identify the change, and obtain fresh signatures if the change affects the agreement. Keeping both versions and the related messages helps establish which document the parties intended to execute.
Someone else had access to the saved signature
Access to a signature image can create an identity and authorization dispute. Use device security, separate user accounts, and a signing method with identity or audit controls when unauthorized use would be consequential.
Bottom line
A signature added in Mac Preview can satisfy the broad U.S. concept of an electronic signature and generally cannot be rejected solely because it is electronic. Preview itself does not guarantee identity, intent, document integrity, recipient acceptance, or compliance with special formalities. For an ordinary transaction, sign the final version knowingly, follow the recipient’s instructions, and preserve the completed PDF and execution trail. For a high-stakes, regulated, disputed, or jurisdiction-specific matter, verify the requirements with the counterparty or a qualified lawyer before relying on Preview.
