Robotaxis may be suitable for some family trips, but safety depends on the operator, city, rider-eligibility rules, correct child restraints, and what passengers should do if they need help. A company’s safety statistics describe past performance in a defined area; they do not guarantee an individual ride. Privacy also varies: check what the specific service collects inside and outside the vehicle, when staff can access recordings, how long trip data is retained, and what controls are available.
What does “safe” mean for a robotaxi passenger?
For a child or adult passenger, safety has several parts that should be considered separately:
- Road performance: how the automated driving system has performed in the places and conditions where it operates.
- Passenger protection: whether every rider has an appropriate seat belt or child restraint and uses it correctly.
- Eligibility: whether a child may ride alone, must have an adult, or needs a parent-linked account under the local service rules.
- Help during a trip: how to contact support or respond to an emergency when no human driver is present.
- Privacy: what cabin sensors collect, who may access the data, and how trip and location information is handled.
These questions are operator- and location-specific. A policy or safety record for one service should not be treated as a rule or guarantee for every robotaxi.

Can a child ride in a robotaxi?
Check the local age and accompaniment rules
Waymo’s current rider rules say riders generally must be at least 18 to ride alone. Its linked teen-account exception covers riders ages 13–17 in Phoenix and Nashville and requires a parent or guardian account to be linked. A minor may accompany an eligible rider, but Waymo’s rules prohibit leaving a minor in the vehicle without an adult or an applicable teen account. These are Waymo rules for the markets identified in its guidance, not a universal robotaxi policy.

Before booking, confirm the exact city, account type, and adult-accompaniment requirements in the service’s current rider rules. Do not assume that a child allowed as an accompanied passenger can also travel alone.
Bring and install the right child restraint
Waymo tells riders to bring a car seat or booster for a child under 8. It directs riders to secure the restraint in the rear seat according to its manufacturer’s instructions and says children under 8 should not sit in front. The vehicle guidance identifies rear-seat ISOFIX/LATCH and top-tether anchors. All riders should wear seat belts throughout the trip.
Choose a restraint appropriate to the child’s size, then check that it can be installed correctly in the vehicle’s rear seat. The available guidance does not establish that a particular car-seat model is compatible or that an operator supplies one.

What do robotaxi safety statistics establish?
Waymo’s Safety Impact dashboard compares rider-only crash rates with human-driving benchmarks in Waymo operating cities. It says its data updates in line with NHTSA Standing General Order reporting. The dashboard reported 271.3 million rider-only miles through June 2026. That figure is Waymo’s reported mileage, not an industry-wide total.
Waymo defines its “serious injury or worse” category to include suspected serious injuries and fatalities. The company says there is not enough Waymo vehicle mileage to make a statistically significant fatalities-only comparison. Its dashboard is retrospective evidence about the company’s operation and stated measures; it is not a prediction for a particular trip. The available comparison does not isolate child passengers, and the cited material does not establish a third-party child-specific robotaxi injury rate.
When reviewing any operator’s safety claims, look for who produced the figures, what geography and dates they cover, how crashes or injuries are defined, and whether the data concerns injuries, serious injuries, or fatalities. A lower reported rate on one measure should not be read as proof that a ride is risk-free.

What happens if a passenger needs help?
Waymo’s January 2026 Passenger Safety Plan describes procedures for its California service areas, including an in-car urgent-support prompt. The plan was submitted in California’s CPUC driverless deployment program; it describes that company’s procedures and is not a universal certification. Before a trip, find the service’s in-car help or support option and understand how to use it if a passenger feels unwell, is left at an unexpected location, or needs urgent assistance.

NHTSA’s August 2026 announcement described a temporary commercial deployment exemption allowing Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years. That is an authorization limit, not a crash or injury rate. The same announcement described $5 million over three years in funding for the SAE ITC A2SCEND consortium’s work toward automated-vehicle performance standards. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said, “NHTSA supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles.” The statement describes the agency’s position, not a finding that every vehicle or ride is risk-free.
Are robotaxi cabins monitored?
Cabin monitoring policies differ by operator, and camera presence alone does not explain what is recorded, when a person can view it, or how long data is kept.

Waymo
Waymo says interior cameras may be used to check cleanliness and seat-belt use, locate lost property, respond to emergencies, monitor compliance with rider rules, and improve its services. Its guidance says microphones may be used during support calls or when enabled by a rider. It describes an external audio-detection system for sirens, with safeguards intended to limit human-voice data. Waymo also states that it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals.
Tesla Robotaxi
Tesla’s Robotaxi privacy notice describes recordings related to safety events and conditions for transmitting cabin-camera and sound data. It also describes additional data collection for limited-area early access. The notice places responsibility on riders to confirm that occupants consent when a rider opts into data sharing. Read the current notice for the applicable service and trip rather than assuming the same collection rules apply to every Tesla vehicle or program.

Driving sensors are not the same as cabin privacy
Zoox says its vehicle uses cameras, lidar, radar, and long-wave infrared sensors to provide a 360-degree view of the road. That describes its driving sensor suite; it does not, by itself, establish what cabin data is collected or how long it is retained. Ask about passenger-facing cameras and microphones separately from road-facing sensors.

What happens to trip, location, and camera data?
Waymo’s privacy policy describes collecting trip pickup and drop-off details, route and device-location information, and in-vehicle video. It says account-associated information such as trip history is retained while an account is active, with possible additional retention for stated legal and business purposes, including safety, investigations, disputes, fraud prevention, and product improvement.
In an August 24, 2026 statement, Waymo said, “We do not sell personal information collected by our vehicles’ cameras and other sensors.” That is the company’s statement about personal information collected by vehicle cameras and sensors; it should not be expanded into a claim about every category of data or every operator.
What should families check before booking?
- Confirm eligibility for the actual trip. Check the service’s rules for the city, the child’s age, adult accompaniment, and any parent-linked account requirement.
- Plan the restraint. Confirm that you can bring and correctly install a suitable child seat or booster in the vehicle, and that each passenger can use a seat belt.
- Review cabin-sensor terms. Look for interior video purposes, microphone activation, safety-event recording, live-feed access, and conditions for reviewing stored clips.
- Check data handling. Find out whether location and trip history are linked to the booking account, how long account information is retained, and what access or deletion controls the service offers.
- Tell every occupant what to expect. Explain the service’s sensor and recording practices to guests, and confirm consent where the service requires it for an optional data-sharing setting.
- Locate in-trip help. Identify the support or urgent-help option before the vehicle departs, especially when traveling with a child.
How do local rules affect unaccompanied minors?
California’s Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) describes safeguards for transportation network company (TNC) drivers seeking eligibility to transport unaccompanied minors. These include fingerprint-based background checks; provider descriptions of guardian-accessible live trip tracking, pickup and drop-off procedures, and relevant driver training; insurance; and reporting of trips involving minors. The CPUC page lists approved TNC advice letters.
Those requirements belong to California’s TNC framework. They are not proof of a nationwide robotaxi rule or, by themselves, evidence that a particular robotaxi provider is approved to carry an unaccompanied child. California’s rules, Waymo’s California passenger-safety plan, and NHTSA’s federal exemption for Zoox concern different regulatory contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.
