No official confirmation establishes that Rockstar is preparing PlayStation 5 remasters of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto IV. The rumor grew from unusual support-page options reported in July 2025. Those clues were indirect and do not confirm a project, platform, release date, price, or upgrade path.
What sparked the PS5 remaster rumors?
In July 2025, two reports described separate anomalies on Rockstar support pages. PC Gamer reported that a Red Dead Online support page had shown an “Online Migration” option, a feature type associated with the current-generation release of Grand Theft Auto Online. The same report traced the GTA IV speculation to a user-posted screenshot showing PlayStation 4 as a platform option on a GTA IV help page. PC Gamer’s July 12, 2025 report described these as possible clues, not confirmation.

GamesRadar reported the previous day that the “Online migration” option had been removed, and that the PlayStation 4 option on the GTA IV help page was also removed after it was noticed. GamesRadar’s July 11, 2025 report likewise cautioned readers not to treat the clues as firm news. A transient support-page entry or screenshot can prompt speculation, but neither establishes that a game is in development.
What has Rockstar officially confirmed?
Rockstar’s official material reviewed here does not announce either alleged remaster. In November 2020, the company said that the PlayStation 4 versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 would be playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. That statement concerns existing PS4 games, not native PS5 remasters. Rockstar’s November 2020 announcement

Rockstar’s game listings include Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, but do not identify either as a PS5 remaster. The company’s October 1, 2026 GTA V update notes concern that separate game; they do not announce either rumored project. The absence of an announcement in these materials does not prove that no project is in development.
What can you play on PS5 now?
Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar said the existing PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. This does not make it a native PS5 remaster, and the sources reviewed do not establish a separate PS5 upgrade entitlement.

Grand Theft Auto IV
The available material does not establish a PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. Rockstar’s store lists Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, but that listing is not evidence of a PS5 release.

The original Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar Support separately says the PS4 version of the original Red Dead Redemption is backward compatible on PS5. That is a different game from Red Dead Redemption 2, so its support notice does not confirm an RDR2 remaster. Rockstar Support’s PS4 backward-compatibility notice

Remaster, port, re-release, and backward compatibility are different
- Backward compatibility: An existing release runs on newer hardware. Rockstar’s 2020 statement about the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 describes this case.
- Port: A game is adapted for another platform. The support-page clues do not establish that either title is being ported.
- Re-release: A game is made available again, potentially with or without changes. The July 2025 reports do not establish a re-release plan.
- Remaster: An updated edition, usually involving some technical or visual changes. No official feature list or announcement for either alleged PS5 remaster was found in the sources reviewed.
What remains unknown
Because Rockstar has not confirmed these projects in the official sources reviewed, there are no established details to rely on for a PS5 release date, price, graphical or performance changes, upgrade eligibility, or even whether the rumored releases would be remasters rather than another type of re-release. Treat those details as unknown unless Rockstar announces them through an official channel.
