Prediction-market winnings may be taxable, but the IRS guidance reviewed here does not specifically classify event-contract profits or prescribe a contract-specific way to report them. The IRS says gambling winnings are fully taxable and must be reported, even when no Form W-2G is issued. Whether that general gambling treatment applies to a particular prediction-market contract is not settled by the IRS sources discussed here. For U.S. federal individual income tax, keep complete records, report taxable income even if no tax form arrives, and consult a qualified tax professional if you need help determining how your activity should be classified.

Are prediction market winnings taxable?

The answer depends in part on how the activity is classified for tax purposes. The Internal Revenue Service states in its general gambling guidance that “Gambling winnings are fully taxable and you must report the income on your tax return.” That guidance is important, but it does not specifically say that every prediction-market event contract is gambling or explain how to report its profits.

The IRS materials covered here also do not establish that all event contracts should instead be treated as capital assets or as Section 1256 contracts. Avoid assuming that one of those treatments applies universally. The answer may depend on the activity and the relevant tax facts, so a tax professional familiar with prediction-market contracts can help assess your situation.

Do I have to report winnings if I didn’t get a 1099?

Not receiving a tax form does not, by itself, remove the obligation to report taxable income. The IRS says gambling winnings must be reported even when they are not shown on Form W-2G, and its general guidance says income must be reported even if an information form does not arrive.

Form W-2G is issued for certain gambling winnings or winnings subject to federal withholding. Whether a payer must file or withhold depends on the gambling category and applicable conditions; the IRS instructions do not establish one universal W-2G threshold for prediction-market contracts. A missing form—or a form covering a different type of account activity—is not a determination that event-contract profits are tax-free.

How should I report prediction-market activity?

If your winnings are treated as gambling income, IRS guidance for casual gamblers directs reporting on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR using Schedule 1, including winnings not reported on Form W-2G. That is general gambling guidance, not an IRS ruling that every prediction-market contract belongs in that category. The line reference can change by tax year: the IRS’s 2025 Publication 17 identifies Schedule 1, line 8b for that tax year, so check the form and instructions for the year you are filing rather than relying on an older line number.

Keep the documents you receive, but do not treat a platform tax form or profit-and-loss statement as a ruling on the correct tax character of your event-contract activity. A platform may report particular kinds of account activity without reporting or resolving the tax treatment of every contract trade.

What records should I keep?

Save platform statements and exports, and retain relevant wallet or broker records if your activity involves them. A useful record set lets you reconstruct what happened, when it happened, what amounts were involved, and how you calculated any reported result.

  • U.S.-dollar values and basis information where relevant to the tax treatment you use.

  • Wallet or broker records for any related transfers or transactions involving digital assets.

For digital assets, IRS guidance calls for records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions, including the fair market value in U.S. dollars of digital assets received as income. That guidance applies when your activity actually involves digital assets; it does not mean every prediction-market position is itself a digital-asset transaction. The IRS also says digital-asset transactions may need to be reported whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss, and that taxable transactions remain reportable even if you do not receive Form 1099-DA.

How can a platform statement help—and what can’t it tell me?

Platform records can help you reconcile activity, but their scope and calculations matter. For example, a Kalshi Help Center article dated June 22, 2026, says its account P&L includes fees and rebates, uses FIFO, and is updated monthly. It also describes tax forms for certain account activity, including interest, credits or rewards, and specified broker or digital-asset reporting. The article says the P&L and tax information are not tax advice and that members remain responsible for accurate returns.

Those details describe that platform’s documentation, not a universal rule for prediction markets. The article does not list a form for event-contract trading profits; that omission does not establish what another platform reports or what documents a particular user may receive. Compare a statement with your own transaction history and retain the underlying records needed to verify it.

Can I deduct losses?

For casual gamblers, the IRS says gambling losses are deductible only if the taxpayer itemizes deductions and only up to the amount of gambling income reported. It also calls for an accurate diary or similar record supported by receipts, tickets, statements, or other documentation. These are general gambling rules; the cited IRS guidance does not settle whether losses from prediction-market event contracts qualify for that treatment. Do not assume that the gambling-loss rule—or a different loss treatment—applies to your contracts without resolving their classification.
