On average, recent U.S. owner-reported studies show more reliability problems for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) than for conventional hybrids and gasoline vehicles. That is a category-level warning, not proof that every PHEV is unreliable or that a particular car will fail. Reliability varies by model and model year, and the studies use different measures.
What recent reliability studies say about PHEVs
J.D. Power’s 2026 study
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported 281 problems per 100 PHEVs, an increase of 39 from the prior year and the highest rate among the powertrain categories it compared. The study was fielded from December 2024 through November 2025. The figure is a study metric—not the percentage of PHEVs that break or a prediction that an individual vehicle will have a particular number of failures. J.D. Consumer Reports’ model comparisons
Consumer Reports’ 2025 analysis of 2023–2025 model years says a plug-in version of a given model tends to have worse reliability than its gas-only and/or conventional-hybrid counterpart. “Tends” matters: this is a survey-wide pattern, not a claim that every plug-in version is less reliable. Consumer Reports’ senior director of auto testing, Jake Fisher, said that many problems with EVs and PHEVs arise because they are newer designs than gas technology, with some kinks still being worked out. How to interpret the numbers
Problems-per-100-vehicles figures count reported problems under a study’s methodology. They are not percentages, individual-vehicle failure odds, or necessarily counts of equally serious defects. Consumer Reports says it gives greater weight to serious, potentially expensive systems, so its reliability score is not simply a tally of identical-severity faults. These studies support a comparison of reported reliability patterns, but they do not establish that every PHEV is unreliable, that the battery or electric drive is necessarily the source of reported problems, or that a specific current model will fail. They also do not provide a consistent comparison of repair costs or downtime. A higher reported problem count alone does not prove higher repair bills.
Why model-specific safety records matter
Broad category surveys and safety investigations answer different questions. NHTSA’s 2024 preliminary evaluation followed 68 reports of loss of motive power involving certain 2021–2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles. The agency’s September 6, 2024 information request records reports received at that time; it is an inquiry into allegations, not a finding that all affected vehicles—or PHEVs generally—have the defect. Separately, a November 4, 2025 NHTSA notice expanded a battery-fire-risk recall to 320,065 specified Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee PHEVs. The notice reported 19 battery-pack fires, including nine in vehicles that had received the earlier remedy software. Those figures apply to the recall population and incidents described in that notice; they are not a risk estimate for the PHEV fleet. NHTSA instructed owners of affected vehicles to park outside and not charge them until the remedy is completed. Follow current official instructions for any vehicle covered by a safety notice. What to check before buying or charging a PHEV
Compare the exact model and year
Look up reliability information for the specific model year and powertrain you are considering. Where possible, compare the PHEV with the same model’s gas-only or conventional-hybrid version; a category average cannot tell you how an individual model performs.

Review a used vehicle’s history
- Check its model-specific reliability record and available service records.
- Check whether recalls are open or have been completed.
- Use the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check current recall status before buying or continuing to charge a vehicle subject to a safety notice.
Follow recall directions
If a vehicle is covered by the November 2025 expanded Jeep recall, follow NHTSA’s direction to park it outside and not charge it until the remedy is completed. For any recall, use the current VIN-specific status and official instructions rather than assuming a notice applies—or does not apply—based only on the model name.
Keep rankings in context
When comparing reliability claims, note the publisher, study year, vehicles or model years covered, and metric. Results from different survey methods should not be treated as interchangeable, and the available evidence does not support a universal best-to-worst PHEV ranking.
