Short answer: Plastic-eating enzymes are promising for contained, industrial PET recycling, but current evidence does not show that they are safe for unrestricted human use or release into soil, rivers, oceans, wastewater, or household waste. PETase and MHETase can break polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into reusable chemical building blocks in controlled reactors. A 2024 human-serum experiment found no cell-viability effect under its test conditions, but that was an early laboratory result—not a clinical safety study.
What “plastic-eating enzymes” actually are
“Plastic-eating enzyme” is a popular shorthand, not a description of a universal plastic solvent. The best-established systems target polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the polyester used in many beverage bottles, food containers, textiles, and films. They do not automatically digest polyethylene shopping bags, polypropylene food tubs, polystyrene foam, PVC pipe, or every plastic mixture found in household waste.
PETase hydrolyzes PET into smaller molecules, including mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET). MHETase can then convert MHET toward terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol. Those monomers can potentially be purified and used to make new PET or other value-added products. The safety question therefore concerns both the enzymes and everything in the feedstock, reaction mixture, and recovered products.

Why controlled conditions matter
Enzymes are proteins whose activity depends on pH, temperature, water chemistry, concentration, and contact with the target polymer. A reactor can hold those variables within a narrow range; a river, landfill, ocean, or human body cannot. Results from a buffered laboratory vessel should not be treated as evidence of predictable behavior in an open environment.

Are plastic-eating enzymes safe for people to touch?
There is not enough evidence to call purified PETase, MHETase, engineered cells, or an active reaction mixture safe for casual handling. A protein may be biodegradable and non-corrosive while still causing skin sensitization, eye irritation, respiratory exposure, or an allergic response in some people. The risk also depends on formulation: laboratory preparations can contain buffers, preservatives, microbial proteins, cell debris, or other chemicals that are not part of the enzyme itself.
The sensible workplace assumption is to treat an uncharacterized enzyme preparation as a laboratory chemical or biological reagent. Use the supplier’s safety data sheet where one exists, avoid aerosols and splashes, wear suitable gloves and eye protection, and keep reaction vessels closed. Do not smell, taste, or deliberately apply the material to skin. A “natural” origin does not substitute for toxicology data.
What the serum experiment means
The 2024 Faraday Discussions study is relevant because it examined PETase activity at approximately human body temperature, 37 °C, in human serum and reported no influence on cell viability in vitro. That finding is a narrow proof of concept. Cell viability is only one endpoint, measured over a defined exposure period and with a particular preparation and concentration.
It does not answer whether PETase or its impurities could trigger antibodies, inflammation, complement activation, organ toxicity, or allergic reactions; whether the enzyme survives digestion or crosses biological barriers; or whether repeated exposure changes risk. It also does not show that PETase provides a medical benefit. No human clinical trial or regulatory approval for treating people with plastic-eating enzymes was identified in the available evidence.
Can PETase be used in drinking water?
Do not add PETase, MHETase, plastic-degrading bacteria, or a research enzyme mixture to drinking water. The bottle-to-product experiments used controlled processing, not direct treatment of water intended for consumption. A treatment would need validated removal or inactivation of the enzyme, engineered organisms, cell debris, reaction chemicals, PET additives, and all intermediate and final products.

Even if the enzyme itself proved harmless, degrading a PET container in water could release dyes, stabilizers, catalysts, plasticizers, labels, adhesives, or contaminants that were adsorbed during use. The conversion of PET to TPA and ethylene glycol must be measured, and the finished water would need to meet applicable drinking-water standards. The cited studies do not demonstrate that outcome.
Could plastic-eating enzymes be used inside the human body?
Current evidence does not support swallowing or injecting these enzymes. A serum assay is not a pharmacokinetic study and cannot establish a safe dose, route of administration, frequency, or treatment goal. Any medical use would require staged research covering purity, sterility, immune reactions, toxicology, distribution through tissues, breakdown and clearance, interactions with medicines, and meaningful clinical outcomes.
There is also no established clinical reason to use PETase to remove plastic from a person. The presence of microplastics in human tissues is an active research topic, but detecting particles is not the same as showing that enzymatic digestion inside the body is safe or beneficial.
Will these enzymes harm ecosystems?
Open-environment release remains an unresolved risk, not a demonstrated solution. A 2024 review identifies restricted substrate specificity, poor activity under fluctuating environmental conditions, slow reaction rates, and inadequate study of nanoplastics. Temperature, salinity, sunlight, sediment binding, acidity, and competing organisms can all change enzyme activity.
Soil and freshwater
In soil or freshwater, an enzyme could bind to minerals or organic matter, become inactive, or move with runoff. Alternatively, a preparation could remain active long enough to alter contaminated plastic surfaces without anyone knowing the dose or exposure area. The ecological consequences of that change have not been established. Degradation products and additives could enter water or food webs, so measuring only the disappearance of visible plastic would be inadequate.

Marine environments
Seawater adds salinity, dilution, waves, ultraviolet exposure, and large temperature variation. A reactor result cannot predict whether PETase will remain active, whether it will concentrate on particles, or whether marine organisms will encounter the enzyme, intermediates, or additives. No cited evidence demonstrates that releasing an enzyme into the ocean produces a net ecological benefit.

Engineered microbes raise an additional containment issue
Some systems use engineered yeast or bacteria that display or produce PET-degrading enzymes. The organism introduces risks beyond the purified protein: survival outside the reactor, gene transfer, competition with native microbes, and difficulty recalling the population after release. Responsible systems therefore require physical containment, validated kill or removal steps, monitoring, and procedures for spills and waste.
Are microplastics safely broken down?
Breaking a particle into smaller particles is not the same as detoxifying it. The desired endpoint for PET is conversion to measurable TPA and ethylene glycol, followed by recovery or controlled treatment. If hydrolysis stops at MHET or other intermediates, the process may leave soluble chemicals whose environmental fate still matters.
The 2024 serum study used microplastic-like PET substrates and demonstrated enzyme activity, but it did not establish safe treatment of environmental nanoplastics. Reviews specifically note that nanoplastic behavior is inadequately studied. Nanoplastics have different surface area, transport, aggregation, and biological-interaction characteristics from larger PET fragments, so performance and hazard cannot be inferred from one size range.
What could make an industrial process responsible?
The defensible near-term use case is a closed recycling line or research reactor with documented inputs, controlled chemistry, and product recovery. A credible operator should be able to answer each of these questions:

- What polymer is present? Confirm PET identity and characterize dyes, multilayer films, labels, metals, additives, and non-PET contamination.
- Which catalyst is used? Record the enzyme sequence or microbial host, engineering changes, purity, concentration, and expected by-products.
- What are the operating limits? Control and log pH, temperature, residence time, agitation, solids loading, and water chemistry. The 2025 engineered-yeast study reported an optimum of pH 9 and 30 °C; that is a process result, not a universal recipe.
- How complete is conversion? Measure PET loss and quantify MHET, TPA, ethylene glycol, oligomers, additives, and any residual particles rather than relying on visual inspection.
- How are products recovered? Separate and purify TPA and ethylene glycol, treat process water, and prevent enzyme or engineered-cell discharge.
- Can the catalyst be contained and reused? Immobilization, filtration, heat treatment, or another validated inactivation step should be demonstrated before waste leaves the facility.
- What happens during a failure? Maintain spill response, off-specification batch handling, monitoring, and records that allow a contaminated stream to be isolated.
Why reactor success does not automatically scale
Plastic waste is heterogeneous. A clean PET bottle flake is very different from a multilayer package covered in food residue, pigment, adhesive, or metal. Enzymes may be blocked by surface coatings, while MHET can inhibit further reaction. A 2025 PET-biocatalysis review also describes unresolved efficiency, separation, and scale-up problems.
Longer residence times can improve conversion but increase tank volume, energy use, contamination opportunities, and operating cost. Raising enzyme concentration may increase throughput but also complicate recovery. A responsible life-cycle assessment must count pretreatment, water, heating or cooling, enzyme manufacture, purification, waste treatment, and transport—not just the reaction’s ability to depolymerize PET.
How to evaluate a safety claim
When a company, video, or paper says a plastic-eating system is “safe,” check the claim against the following decision points:
- Identify the plastic. Is the tested polymer PET, or is “plastic” being used as a blanket term?
- Separate the catalyst from the host. Was the experiment performed with a purified enzyme, free cells, engineered yeast, or a mixed culture?
- Check conditions. Compare pH, temperature, salinity, solids loading, and reaction time with the proposed use.
- Inspect endpoints. Was conversion measured chemically, or was the claim based only on weight loss, surface damage, or cloudiness?
- Ask what remains. Look for data on MHET, TPA, ethylene glycol, oligomers, additives, nanoplastics, and process contaminants.
- Look for real safety testing. Cell viability alone is not human toxicology; an aquarium test is not an ecosystem assessment.
- Verify containment. A proposal for outdoor release should provide ecological risk assessment, monitoring, retrieval or inactivation plans, and regulatory authorization.
Is there a plastic-digesting product for home use?
No consumer product is supported by the cited evidence as a safe household method for digesting plastic. Home users cannot reliably identify polymer mixtures, control alkaline pH and temperature, quantify intermediates, or recover products. Pouring an enzyme preparation into a drain, compost bin, aquarium, garden soil, or household water system could spread an uncharacterized mixture and bypass waste controls.

What evidence would change the safety assessment?
Confidence would require more than a faster degradation rate. Useful evidence would include standardized toxicity tests for the purified enzyme and realistic formulations; allergy and immune testing; exposure limits for workers; validated removal from water and products; environmental fate in soil, freshwater, and seawater; chronic studies with representative organisms; nanoplastic-specific testing; and independent analysis of additives and degradation products.
For engineered organisms, regulators and operators would also need genetic stability data, inability to survive or reproduce outside containment, gene-transfer assessment, validated kill switches or equivalent controls, and emergency monitoring. Until those data exist, “safe” should be limited to a defined, controlled process rather than applied to unrestricted release.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PETase digest every type of plastic?
No. The strongest evidence concerns PET. Performance on polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, PVC, multilayer packaging, and mixed waste cannot be assumed.
Did a human study prove PETase is safe?
No. A 2024 in-vitro human-serum experiment reported no cell-viability effect under its tested conditions, but it was not a clinical trial and did not establish dose, immune, absorption, or long-term safety.
Is outdoor release a realistic way to remove plastic pollution?
Current evidence does not support it. Environmental activity, nanoplastic effects, degradation products, additives, and ecological consequences remain insufficiently characterized.
What is the safest current use?
Contained research or industrial PET processing with controlled pH and temperature, characterized feedstock, measured products, and recovery or inactivation of enzymes and engineered organisms.
