Yes—but mainly as a quick-access surface, not a universal replacement for the phone’s main screen. A good secondary display can handle notifications, music controls, directions, camera previews and some short replies without opening the phone. Whether it feels practical depends more on software support, readable layouts and reachable controls than on the outer screen’s diagonal measurement.

What a secondary display is good at

On a foldable phone, the secondary display is the screen you can use while the handset is closed. Its strongest role is reducing the number of times you unfold the device. Motorola’s Razr 2024 support guidance describes a sleep display that can show the time, notifications and media controls. It also documents choices for how individual apps move between the external and internal screens.

That makes the outer panel useful for interactions that are brief, repetitive or glanceable:

  • Checking the time, weather or a notification preview.
  • Starting, pausing or skipping music and podcasts.
  • Following a short map instruction while walking.
  • Viewing a camera preview for a self-portrait or group photo.
  • Reading a short message and sending a concise reply.
  • Checking a boarding pass, timer, two-factor code or delivery update.

These tasks benefit because they do not require the larger screen, a full keyboard or several simultaneous apps. You can leave the phone closed in a pocket, on a desk or in a car holder and still get useful information.

The practical test is not “Can the outer display run an app?” It is “Can it complete the things I repeatedly do without forcing awkward workarounds?” A display that opens an app but hides controls behind a camera cutout, removes settings or requires several swipes may be less useful than its specifications suggest.

What current models actually promise

Capabilities vary considerably by model and generation. Motorola’s current UK Razr 70 Ultra product page advertises a 4.0-inch external display beside a 7.0-inch inner display. Motorola says the external panel can run full apps and support replies, maps, music and live notifications. Those are manufacturer claims for the UK version of that product page; availability and behavior can differ in other regions or software releases.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Used as a comparison phone in a 24-hour Android Central hands-on test published in April 2025 Provides model-specific usability observations, not a universal result for every flip phone

A larger outer screen can make typing and app navigation easier, but size alone does not guarantee a good experience. The shape of the panel, its camera cutouts, touch targets and the manufacturer’s software rules determine what you can really do.

Why software matters more than the screen size

In an April 2025 Android Central day-long comparison, editor Derrek Lee used the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 for cover-screen routines. He found the Razr easier to set up and more capable for the tested routine. He also reported awkward app layouts, obstruction around the camera area and restricted settings access on the Razr. On the Samsung phone, he described more setup friction, constrained multitasking and difficult notification interactions.

Those observations describe one reviewer’s 24-hour test of two specific generations. They are useful because they show where a secondary display can fail, but they are not a usage survey or a productivity benchmark. They also should not be generalized to every current foldable.

App continuity

Some phones let an app remain on the outer display when you close the handset; others move it to the inner display, pause it or require you to approve the transition. Motorola documents per-app transition choices on the Razr 2024. Before buying, identify the apps you use most and check whether each one can stay on the screen you want.

Layout and cutouts

Developers do not always design for a narrow or unusually shaped cover panel. Buttons can be too close to the edge, text can wrap badly and a camera opening can cover an important control. A map may be readable while a banking app or password manager is not. Try the actual apps you rely on rather than assuming that “full app” means a comfortable layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings and multitasking

Quick settings, notification actions and app switching may be limited while the phone is closed. A device can play music externally yet require opening the handset to change a deeper setting, authenticate, attach a file or move between several apps. These restrictions are design decisions, not signs that the screen is defective.

Can you use the cover screen for most things?

For a narrow routine, often yes. For general smartphone use, usually no. Lee’s comparison concluded that there were few reasons to use only the cover screen except when the main display was unusable. That conclusion fits the physical trade-off: an outer display is convenient precisely because it is smaller, but smaller controls and less room for content make extended tasks slower.

Good candidates for closed-phone use

  • Notifications that need a glance or a short response.
  • Audio playback controls.
  • Walking directions and simple navigation prompts.
  • Camera framing, especially for rear-camera selfies.
  • Short messages, quick acknowledgements and voice replies.
  • Timers, alarms, authentication codes and payment prompts when supported.

Tasks that normally justify opening the phone

  • Long emails, documents and detailed form entry.
  • Photo or video editing.
  • Spreadsheets, presentations and other dense interfaces.
  • Research that requires several browser tabs.
  • Multitasking across apps or dragging information between them.
  • Security-sensitive actions that the outer interface does not expose.

The sensible expectation is selective use: keep the phone closed for a quick interaction, then open it when the task becomes content-heavy or requires broader controls.

A practical way to evaluate a phone before buying

Use the following framework with the exact model and software version you are considering. Do not rely on a larger advertised display as a substitute for testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. List your repeated routines

Write down five to ten actions you perform every day, such as checking messages, controlling music, navigating, scanning a code or taking a selfie. A cover screen is worthwhile when it removes friction from several of these actions, not when it merely demonstrates that an app can launch.

2. Verify app support and continuity

Check the manufacturer’s outer-display settings and the apps you named. Look for whether each app can open externally, whether it resumes when you unfold the phone and whether closing the phone returns you to the same task. On Razr 2024 models, Motorola provides per-app transition choices; the labels and available options can vary by software release.

3. Inspect the usable layout

Read a message, open a map, play music and enter a short reply on the actual panel. Look for clipped text, tiny controls, unreachable corners and camera-area obstruction. If you use accessibility features such as enlarged text or magnification, test those settings too, because they can reduce the amount of content that fits.

4. Test controls while the phone is closed

Try opening a notification, changing a track, switching apps, changing a quick setting and returning to the home surface. Note every action that forces you to unfold the phone. Occasional opening is normal; a routine that requires opening for every meaningful choice defeats the purpose of the outer display.

5. Test continuity in both directions

Start a task on the outer screen, unfold the phone and confirm that it continues correctly. Then begin on the inner screen, close the device and see whether the app remains available externally. Some apps support only one direction or stop at a lock screen.

6. Check regional and generation differences

Confirm the exact model number, market and software version. Motorola’s Razr 70 Ultra claims cited here are from its UK product page, while the hands-on comparison involved the Razr Plus 2024 and Galaxy Z Flip6. A similarly named phone sold in another country may have different hardware, firmware or app behavior.

Modes beyond the closed-phone screen

Motorola’s Razr 2024 materials also describe tent and stand display modes. These can keep content visible while the phone is partly folded, which is useful for a timer, a video call, a clock or a camera preview without holding the device.

Motorola advises keeping image dimming enabled in tent and stand modes. The stated reasons are to extend battery life and lessen the risk of image burn-in. This is manufacturer guidance, not a quantified burn-in rate or an independent failure measurement. Treat it as a care setting worth leaving on unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Common frustrations and how to diagnose them

An app always opens on the inner display

Look for the model’s per-app external-display or transition setting. If the app is not listed, the software may not permit external use. Install updates before concluding that the hardware lacks the feature, but do not assume an update will add support.

A button is hidden or hard to tap

Rotate the phone if the app supports rotation, reduce display scaling only if you can still read comfortably, and try the app’s compact or simplified view. If a camera cutout permanently covers a control, use the inner screen for that task; this is a layout limitation rather than a setting you can always fix.

Notifications cannot be acted on

Check notification permissions and whether the manufacturer allows that app’s actions externally. Some alerts expose only a preview or dismiss button while closed. For secure apps, authentication or attachment actions may intentionally require the main display.

Multitasking feels cramped

Use the cover panel for one focused action. Open the phone for split-screen work, drag-and-drop, comparison shopping or any task involving several windows. A secondary display is not automatically a miniature tablet interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The outer display drains the battery

Use the sleep display for essential information, enable image dimming in tent and stand modes as Motorola recommends, and avoid leaving bright static content on-screen for long periods. No source cited here provides a measured battery penalty, so treat battery impact as model- and setting-dependent rather than a fixed percentage.

Who should consider a secondary-display phone?

  • Good fit: people who frequently check notifications, control audio, navigate, take selfies or send short replies and prefer not to unfold a phone for each action.
  • Conditional fit: users who want full apps externally but are willing to test layout, notification actions and continuity for their specific software.
  • Poor fit: anyone expecting the outer panel to replace the main display for long writing, intensive multitasking, editing or dense productivity work.

There is no representative published figure showing how often people use secondary displays or how much productivity they add. The decision therefore comes down to your routine and the exact implementation, not a promised percentage improvement.

Bottom line for everyday use

Secondary displays are practical when treated as a fast control panel: glance, act, and return the phone to your pocket. They become less practical when you expect miniature versions of every phone function. Current Motorola materials show that some models support full apps, replies, maps, music and live notifications, while the 2025 Razr Plus 2024 versus Galaxy Z Flip6 comparison shows how layout, settings and notification design can still create friction. Test your essential apps on the exact regional model, keep the main display available for complex work and follow the maker’s care guidance. That is the usage pattern most likely to deliver convenience without turning the cover screen into a daily compromise.
