No—Nintendo has not officially announced a collection combining The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. The games remain linked Nintendo DS adventures, but the “officially returning” claim is unverified as of October 17, 2026.
What Nintendo has actually announced
Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 Zelda 40th Anniversary announcement and its related Direct page list several confirmed projects: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, a Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 system and accessories, concerts, Nintendo Today content, and a live-action film. Neither announcement lists a Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks collection, remaster, remake, or Nintendo Classics release.
That makes the collection headline a rumor or an unverified claim, not a confirmed product. Nintendo could announce additional games later, but there is currently no official release date, platform, price, format, pre-order listing, or statement promising this DS pairing.

The anniversary Switch 2 hardware is separate
Nintendo says the Japanese Nintendo Switch 2 40th Anniversary Edition launches on October 29, 2026, for ¥62,980 including tax. It is hardware and does not include a game. Buying that system therefore does not provide either DS title or establish that a collection is coming.

Why these two games are discussed together
Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are connected Nintendo DS adventures rather than unrelated entries. Nintendo’s official timeline describes Phantom Hourglass as Link’s search for the items needed to forge the Phantom Sword and defeat Bellum. It describes Spirit Tracks as Link and Princess Zelda’s train-bound investigation into the disappearance of the Spirit Tracks in the new Hyrule kingdom.
Spirit Tracks follows Phantom Hourglass in the series’ story and was released for Nintendo DS in 2009. Producer Eiji Aonuma worked on both games; a Nintendo Iwata Asks interview explicitly identifies him as producer of Spirit Tracks and its predecessor. That sequel relationship is the main reason fans expect the games to be packaged together, but it is not evidence of a current Nintendo project.

What a future collection would need to explain
If Nintendo announces a collection later, these are the practical details that will determine whether it reproduces the DS experience well:

Nintendo has not supplied these specifications for the rumored collection. In particular, a modern port would need a clear solution for the original games’ dual-screen and stylus interface; a simple resolution increase would not answer that design problem.

Can you play the original games now?
The original Nintendo DS cartridges are the established way to play both adventures. If you buy used copies, check that the listing names the exact game, states the cartridge’s condition, and identifies its region and language. A marketplace listing for an original cartridge is not proof of a new collection, a remaster, or Nintendo authorization for a modern release.
Checklist for buying a used copy
- Confirm whether the listing is for Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks; they are separate games.
- Check photographs or seller details for the cartridge label and contacts.
- Ask which region and language the cartridge uses, especially when importing.
- Verify the seller’s return policy and whether the item is an original cartridge rather than a reproduction.
- Do not pay a premium based solely on a rumor about a future collection.

What is confirmed for Zelda’s 40th anniversary
The confirmed 2026 program currently centers on Ocarina of Time on Switch 2, anniversary hardware and accessories, concerts, Nintendo Today material, and a live-action film. No supported Nintendo sales statistic, promise quote, or release commitment establishes a Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks collection.
