Sometimes—but browser storage is not a guarantee against a thief with physical access. The outcome depends mainly on whether the computer was powered off and encrypted, locked but still running, or already unlocked when it was taken. It also depends on the browser’s own protection, whether a separate unlock password is enabled, and whether credentials can be reached through a synced account.

A powered-off computer with verified full-disk encryption and a strong login is a very different risk from an unlocked laptop. Browser password managers must decrypt credentials locally to autofill them, so protection that works against a copied disk does not automatically protect an active desktop session.

What a thief can access depends on the computer’s state

Ask four questions before judging the exposure: Was the computer off or merely asleep? Was the user session locked? Was full-disk encryption enabled? Could the browser profile or synced account be opened without another authentication step?

State when the computer was taken Likely exposure What changes the risk
Powered off, full-disk encrypted, strong login required Offline access to the browser profile is substantially harder because the storage is encrypted. Recovery keys, weak login credentials, firmware settings, backups, and whether the thief can obtain the account password still matter.
Powered off, disk not encrypted A thief may be able to copy the drive or profile files and work on them elsewhere. Browser-specific encryption and a separate browser unlock password can limit what a copied profile reveals.
Running but locked Usually safer than an unlocked session, but local weaknesses or an already-authenticated account can still matter. Lock timeout, suspend behavior, disk encryption, and operating-system protections are important.
Running and unlocked Highest practical risk. The thief may be able to open the browser, view saved passwords, use active sessions, or export data. Browser reauthentication, an enabled primary or profile password, and rapid remote account revocation can reduce the damage.
Browser profile copied to another device Exposure depends on how the browser protects its credential database and encryption key. Separate browser credentials and operating-system key protection are decisive.

Full-disk encryption protects data at rest. It does not make an already-unlocked desktop safe. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises encrypting computers, mobile devices, drives, and files because unencrypted data can be read or manipulated by someone who gains access: CISA device protection guidance.

How browser password storage works

A browser password manager has to retrieve and decrypt a username and password when it fills a sign-in form. Typically, the browser stores an encrypted credential database and a separate key protected by the operating system, the browser profile, or both. When the user is authenticated, the browser can use that key locally.

This creates two different attack paths:

  • Offline attack: someone removes or copies the storage and tries to decrypt the profile without an active session.
  • Live-session attack: someone uses a computer that is already unlocked, where the browser may be able to decrypt credentials normally.

Encryption of a file is valuable for the first path. It is not, by itself, a defense against the second. A browser that asks for an operating-system password, biometric check, or separate profile password before displaying a credential adds another barrier, but the exact behavior varies by browser, operating system, settings, and session state.

Firefox desktop: the separate Primary Password matters

Firefox desktop stores saved credentials in logins.json and stores a key in key4.db. Mozilla says that, without a Primary Password, someone who copies both files can read the saved logins. The Primary Password encrypts the key in key4.db, creating a separate secret that a copied profile does not contain.

Firefox’s Primary Password is optional and disabled by default. It is local to each Firefox profile and device. Once configured, Firefox requests it once per session when it needs access to stored passwords. You must remember it; Mozilla cannot recover it for you. Setup instructions and the storage explanation are documented here: Mozilla’s Primary Password instructions.

What the Primary Password protects—and what it does not

  • It helps protect saved logins if someone copies the Firefox profile files while Firefox is not already authorized to use them.
  • It adds friction to normal autofill and password viewing because the password is requested when Firefox needs the stored credentials.
  • It does not rescue an already-unlocked computer if the thief can use the active Firefox session after the password has been entered.
  • It is separate for each profile and device, so enabling it on one installation does not protect another profile.

Mozilla describes local saved-login encryption as AES-256-CBC. Mozilla also says Firefox Sync login data uses end-to-end encryption with AES-256-GCM and that Mozilla cannot decrypt synced login data. Those statements describe Mozilla’s documented design; they are not a promise that a compromised, unlocked endpoint is harmless. See Mozilla’s explanation of Firefox password security.

Chrome and Google Password Manager: protection varies by operating system

Google says Chrome uses on-device encryption methods whose details depend on the operating system. When a user tries to view or manage saved passwords, Chrome may ask for Google Account credentials or a face or fingerprint check. Google Password Manager can keep passwords on the device or in a Google Account.

Because Google’s implementation depends on the operating system, do not assume that every Chrome installation presents the same prompt or has the same security boundary. A Windows computer, a Mac, a Chromebook, and a Linux installation can differ in how the operating system protects the encryption key and when reauthentication is required. Google’s current description is at Chrome password protections.

Mac requirements and FileVault

Apple says data is encrypted automatically on Macs with Apple silicon or a T2 Security Chip. FileVault provides an additional layer by requiring credentials to decrypt or access data, while older Macs without those chips need FileVault enabled manually. Keep the recovery key or other recovery material safe and separate from the computer; losing it can prevent legitimate access. Apple’s instructions are at Apple’s FileVault guidance.

Cloud synchronization changes the access path

Sync can make credentials available on another device, but it does not make a stolen endpoint irrelevant. Firefox says synced login data is end-to-end encrypted so Mozilla cannot decrypt it. Apple says iCloud Keychain passwords are among the data categories always protected with end-to-end encryption. Other iCloud categories use Apple’s standard data protection unless Advanced Data Protection is enabled, so it is inaccurate to describe every iCloud item as having the same end-to-end protection. Apple documents these distinctions at iCloud data security.

  1. Set a strong device login. Use a long passphrase or a strong PIN, and configure the computer to lock promptly when unattended.
  2. Turn on full-disk encryption. Check the operating system’s security settings and confirm that encryption is active. Store recovery material separately from the computer.
  3. Add a browser-level barrier where available. In Firefox desktop, open the menu, choose Settings, select Privacy & Security, find Logins and Passwords, and set a Primary Password. Use a strong password that is not reused elsewhere.
  4. Protect the syncing account. Enable two-step verification, review recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and remove old recovery devices or sessions.
  5. Use unique passwords. Give email, cloud storage, financial services, work systems, and the password-manager or browser account their own passwords. A stolen browser credential should not unlock every other account.
  6. Review reauthentication behavior. Check what the browser asks for after reboot, sleep, profile switching, and an idle timeout. A prompt shown only after reboot may not protect a session that was already unlocked.
  7. Keep the operating system and browser current. Security updates can change key protection, authentication prompts, and known vulnerability exposure.

What to do immediately after a computer is stolen

Use a different, trusted device. Work from the highest-impact accounts first, and assume that an unlocked computer may have exposed active sessions even if you never stored the password in the browser.

  1. Revoke the stolen device’s access. Open the relevant account’s device or session list and sign out or remove the computer wherever that option exists.
  2. Change the primary email or cloud-account password. Email and cloud accounts can reset many other services. Recheck recovery addresses, phone numbers, security keys, and active sessions after changing it.
  3. Change high-value saved passwords. Prioritize banking and payment services, email, work systems, cloud storage, identity services, and any password reused on another site. Use unique replacements.
  4. Invalidate sessions and tokens. Some services keep browser sessions alive after a password change. Use account controls to sign out everywhere, revoke application tokens, and remove remembered devices when available.
  5. Use remote lock or erase if the operating system supports it. Availability depends on the operating system and whether the feature was configured before theft. Do not rely on a remote command if the computer is offline or has been reset.
  6. Report the theft. Follow your employer’s incident process if it was a work computer and the relevant local reporting process for the device.
  7. Monitor for misuse. Watch bank and card statements, email forwarding rules, password-reset notices, new sign-ins, and other account alerts. Google specifically recommends monitoring accounts for fraud after a device is lost: Google’s lost-device guidance.

Google’s lost-device help distinguishes phones, tablets, and Chromebooks from Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Computers are not listed under the phone-finding workflow; for those systems Google directs users to change the Google Account password. Remote lock and erase capabilities therefore depend on the operating system and prior setup.

Browser storage versus a dedicated password manager

A separate password-manager application can be useful, but it is not automatically safer. Compare the design and configuration rather than the product category alone.

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it matters after theft
Encryption at rest Are the vault or profile files encrypted, and who controls the key? Determines how difficult offline copying and analysis will be.
Separate unlock credential Is a dedicated master password required, or is the operating-system session enough? Adds a barrier if the profile is copied or the session is exposed.
Reauthentication timing What happens after sleep, reboot, idle timeout, or switching users? Controls how long a thief can use an already-open session.
Sync encryption Is synchronized data end-to-end encrypted, and can the provider decrypt it? Changes the risk if the account or cloud service is accessed.
Recovery and revocation Can you revoke a device, sign out sessions, and recover the account safely? Determines how quickly you can contain a theft.
Usability Will added prompts encourage unique passwords, or cause unsafe notes and reuse? A theoretically stronger design can fail if it leads to predictable workarounds.

Common assumptions that lead to mistakes

  • “The browser encrypts passwords, so I am covered.” Encryption may protect a copied, locked disk but not a browser that is already unlocked.
  • “A sleep screen is the same as powering off.” Sleep and lock behavior varies. Treat an unattended running computer as a live-session risk until you verify its settings.
  • “Changing one password fixes everything.” A thief may have active sessions, recovery access, or copies of other credentials. Revoke sessions and rotate high-impact and reused passwords.
  • “Cloud sync means the stolen computer cannot matter.” Sync can provide another route to credentials if the account or an authenticated device is compromised.
  • “A dedicated password manager is automatically safer.” Its security depends on encryption, unlock rules, recovery, revocation, and your configuration.

The practical answer

Saved browser passwords can be reasonably protected against offline theft when the computer is powered off or locked, full-disk encryption is verified, the device login is strong, and the browser adds an appropriate reauthentication or profile-password barrier. They are not reliably safe if a thief obtains an already-unlocked session. If your computer is stolen, revoke its access immediately, change the primary email or cloud password, rotate financial, work, cloud, and reused credentials, and monitor accounts for misuse.
